The place is very cozy and quaint. A large sushi counter with around 20 seats, and a small area with a few tables. There were two men working at the sushi counter and a very pleasant woman serving the tables. She was nice and polite and service was fast for my lunch visit. This was our first night in Rhinebeck. Didn't realize you needed dinner reservations everywhere in town. Found Osaka restarant and we are so glad we did! Service was extremely friendly...you can tell that many locals go here. The owner knew everyone! My husband and I both had chirashi which was a satisfying meal. The sashimi was thickly cut and fresh. Very odd that this place is considered by many the best sushi around. I was travelling with the family and we decided we wanted some noodles and some sushi. I had the sushi lunch - wondering why it would be such a deal at 10 bucks. while it is true that we came in after 1, the sushi rice was cold and a bit dried out. the sushi was also a little dried and a bit colder than what it should be. i've been to a lot of really spectacular sushi places and wasn't expecting the world but was not really sure that this was very edible. one in our party had the chicken Japanese curry. this is NOT japanese curry. this is a [runny] curry sauce that with a bunch of saute's onions and broccoli thrown on top... fried chicken was a bit tough. udon was fair. nothing to write home about but it was "expected". i'd put a pass on this place. oh, and yes, one of the other reviewers noted that one of the sushi chefs was staring. not sure if he realized it but definitely staring... read more

STOP THE NONSENSE!!!!!!! Hire a baby sitter or stay home with your children. Owner has a 4 year old--yes 4 and a seven year old serving customers in the evening. It's sweet, it's cute until it's not! When they are not setting tables, taking orders and pestering customers with "do you want anything else" when you are still eating, they are jumping, running and yelling. Are the parents CRAZY? I ordered salmon teriyaki and when it came, I asked, what is this???? The Latin waitress came by and asked how everything was and I said, different. She said, what do you mean - I said what is all this stuff on the salmon and where is the salmon? She said everyone else likes it - excuse me, but I have my own opinion. I asked if the owner was Japanese, Chinese or what and she said he was Japanese. The other thing that I thought was disconcerting, was that the older of the two sushi chefs stared at me as I began to eat - obviously he noticed I was Asian too, his respect would have been nice. . . instead he was exercising while seated, trying to gain some of my attention - instead, I found his actions to be repulsive and just ignored him totally. Like the first reviewer on TripAdvisor, I also agree that the Zagat reviews were not deserved. Most probably put on the windows because the owners know that is a selling point, but they are missing the point by offering less than authentic Japanese food to the public - Asian or not. There are other Asian Fusion restaurants that do a far better job of merging different types of Asian food, while tending to the taste, appearance and authenticity of dishes other than their native own. I have learned that if you are Asian and want authentic Asian food, it's best to go by reviews that are written by Asian people. Our cultures definitely know when something is authentic or not; even when people from other Asian cultures are cutting corners by using different soy sauce, seaweed or adding sugar - they do so because the general white public does not know the difference. It is very rare that a non-Asian person knows authentic cultural food, probably because they have lived in that country or have friends who have introduced them to real foods that have influenced their discerning palate. The food was not even tasty, or displayed neatly in the bento box. There's no need for me to patronize them again - they only had one chance to make the grade and they missed it. read more

Osaka was our staple sushi spot while living in RBK and even now, having moved out of Dutchess county, we are there no less than when we were considered "locals." The family is always so warm and the service is fantastic. Their spicy tako salad and sunomono is out of this world and their sashimi tastes like a literal fresh catch. We are so spoiled by this place that it's hard to imagine being patrons at any other Japanese establishment. read more

The freshest sushi I have had in 5 years was on the menu. The sashimi was absolutely the freshest I may have ever had. The location is off the beaten path which lends itself to lower overhead costs and the ability to offer a better quality product. The family that runs this does a spectacular job with presentation, quality and professionalism. If is almost 2 hours from my home but, well worth the trip for future excursions. Had to reiterate my love for Osaka, the food is generally outstanding and it really shines in the service and attention department. Last time I was there I saw Simon Baker and his family dining there, and they treated them the same as the other patrons, attentive and not over bearing. Their attention to detail is what really makes them stand out. The food was great as usual, fresh and tasty. The quality of their dishes is definitely better than average. My daughter and I came for lunch. It's a Wednesday afternoon and quiet. I ordered the tempora shrimp and was very happy. It was perfectly cooked and came with some veggies as well. I don't want to put anyone down, but I'm not sure the other reviewers have a lot of sushi experience (I'd also 'round off' a rating of 3.67 to 4 not 3.) Anyway, I've been eating sushi for over 25 years and the bottom line is Osaka is a pretty good sushi bar. And compared to the very overpriced other restaurant's in Rhinebeck, it's reasonably priced. Osaka is a 'classic' sushi bar, dominated by a wrap around sushi bar, with a few small tables thrown in for good measure. You're never more than a few feet from the bar, so you get a nice sense that you are at a sushi place, not some huge 'Japanese restaurant' where you can't see your food prepared. The food itself is is above average for sushi, and way above the other sushi restaurants in the area. Indeed, their only competition in Rhinebeck recently closed, so I guess that's a vote for Osaka. They have a nice selection of rolls, some unique ones, and do quite a few hand rolls as well. Everything I've had there has been quite good, with the exception of their spicy tuna rolls, which I find contain a little too much mayonnaise for my taste. Osaka also has a fine selection of sakes, including some nice cold ones. Where Osaka really shines in in the service area. Every time I've been there the owner has been there to check out every plate before it is served, and she often asks the chefs to make small changes. With the owner so present, I'd advise just asking her if you have any questions, as she seems very eager to be of help. Anyway, in a town where most restaurants are really just tourist rip off places, Osaka is a real place, serving good food at decent prices. Overall, my favorite place in Rhinebeck. read more

Tried the other Osaka! Overall, it was fantastic. It was quiet, intimate, and most of all, the staff was very friendly. I liked their salad dressing more than the dressing at the Osaka in Tivoli, although I haven't been there in awhile so it could just be poor memory. I had my usual dish, tekka don, and it was great. The maitre d' (I'm pretty sure he was, since he was greeting people at the door) regaled us with stories about his family, but didn't hover. It was a fantastic experience, and I would love to go back again. The prices were steep though, and I would only go back if I wanted to splurge. Greeted like family when we walked in (even though we hadn't been there in a long time). Although it was pretty quiet when we got there, it quickly filled up and take-out was a popular option. I first ate at Osaka Rhinebeck almost ten years ago, and it's been my favorite sushi restaurant ever since. The sushi is excellent. The freshest fish, rice prepared correctly, and only some of the mayonnaise or tempura crisps so prevalent in sushi joints today. Sure, there are "fun" rolls with many different non-traditional ingredients, but basically this is traditional sushi. No brown rice, no fried rolls, just good fish presented in old-school ways. You'll find families here, plus couples and singles. Everyone is a friend of the management, but Jassica and her staff won't bother you unless you want company. Me, I go there when I'm lonely. But you could bring your own party if you want. Never too crowded for good service, even when it's full. This is a very popular restaurant with locals but I've never had to wait for a table. Good for families with little kids, big kids and even teenagers. Great for sushi experts, folks from NYC or anyone who likes good food in a plea sant, friendly atmosphere. read more

Visiting my old stomping grounds the CIA and decided on sushi for an early dinner. We were the first ones in at 430 when they opened up. We felt they may have been annoyed that we were looking through the window to see if they were indeed opening....maybe not just my perception.... LOL At any rate I was nervous at first since the other restaurants in Rhinebeck were already hopping and packed on a Saturday. But the tables quickly filled up and the takeout started to roll in as well. The seating area is very small, would prefer small booths rather than bistro style dining where you are bumping elbows with the patrons next to you. I had no choice except to put my butt in the face of the diners beside me as I squeezed out to go to the bathroom, Im not THAT fat really. The sushi was surprisingly good. (Im not sure why I was surprised, I guess I made a lot of judgments about the place from the moment we walked in) The menu is small compared to what I am used to seeing in a sushi restaurant, I am normally expecting to see an entire page dedicated to special rolls, another for hand rolls, etc etc but the menu is limited. The sushi is great though, very fresh and the rice is nice and light and perfectly seasoned. I was happy with the 2 rolls I ordered, 1 was just a regular salmon avocado roll and the other was a special roll with asparagus, spicy crab salad and shrimp. Very good quality, excellent. Osaka has some of the best sushi I've found in the area. Only a few tables and a wrap around sushi bar, the atmosphere is traditional, simple, and clean- same goes for the sushi. It's perfect for date night or a quick lunch. I highly recommend the spicy scallop roll and the tekkaba roll. read more

I had the assorted sushi dinner recently and I would absolutely NOT go back.the sushi was ok but very ordinary and boring. For $24 I need more than the run of the mill maguro roll and halibut , etc pieces. No toro, squid, roe of any kind. The pieces were ordinary size and the roll was small. The dinner also included the standard miso soup and lettuce salad with miso dressing. So, very expensive for what you get! I would suggest Momiji a few blocks away. read more

I happened to stumble upon this little nice Japanese Sushi spot while on a weekend getaway. The sushi was fresh and well prepared. My friend who wasn't to fond of raw fish absolutely loved the place. I wish I knew the name of the seafood salad the owner recommended to us, it was the best part of the meal. The staff were very very friendly and accomodating to our needs. This is definitely a place I would return to in the future. I wish I could find a spot like this in the city. Also try the sparkling Sake. Awesome!!! read more

OK. This is a tough call to make. Big points for nice, low points for food. It was Monday, not the best day fir sushi because the fish delivery for the weekend has gotten old. It was late (for the Hudson Valley, 8:00) and the place was empty which surely kept them from getting in a food preparation Zone. Then, complicate things with an owner and his wife who are extremely nice. We had a great conversation with them about Japan, and Jersey City and Mitsua food court, and rice balls for kids lunches. Osaka gets big points just for this hospitality. But they had lost too many points by the time that he came to the table and it was impossible to catch up. We had Sushi deluxe, udon with veggie tempura for our little kids, a special unmemorable roll and two hot sake's. Short take: Small and Mushy Yup, small -- not Japanese small and not small because they paid so much attention to the beautifully prepared artistic treat or because they used the highest quality ingredients. It's tempting to think this about a Japanese restaurant but these were just mediocre ingredients prepared mediocrely and then doled out skimpily. The sushi was minuscule by any standard and much of it was unpleasantly mushy -- mushy in the way that Stop and Shop sushi is mushy. The rice wasn't handled well and it got mushy. Too much fish wasn't quite edible. The warm sake was of the lowest grade so that, although we wanted another, we couldn't bare to order it. We got a bottled beer instead. I might say I'm going to go back and give them another chance but the bill was way too high for iceberg lettuce salad, big bottled ginger dressing, poor fish and tiny portions (timy, even by Japanese standards, and portions are small in Japan) I mean the bill was as too high and the portions were small and the quality was lacking. Sorry, a second chance just wouldn't be smart. Maybe we'll try one rool and a sake, for a lunchtime second chance We went someplace else for a drink and dessert in hope of getting some satisfaction. read more

I adore this restaurant. The sushi is always incredible and the staff is so incredibly nice. For me to fill up on sushi, I need to order a lot so it can get pricey--but it's worth it. Tiny, adorable classic sushi bar with all the right touches. The Tekkaba roll is my newest addiction. I'm a fan of the raw fish. I don't like my pieces room temperature, I don't like octopus, and please, I hate small portions. Osaka is the place for me. We got some sashimi dinners there with what looked like bricks of raw salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. They definitely do not skimp on the pieces. Of all the sushi places I've been to, this is the one that sticks out in my mind the most. Nice, big, slightly cold pieces of fish. It's in a weird place back behind some buildings, so you can't see it from the road, but it's worth the search. read more
