This was our favorite sushi spot, it's small and intimate; however, we no longer feel it's safe for us to eat here anymore. We asked for gluten free soy sauce (tamari). They brought us the low sodium soy sauce with our sashimi orders. When we asked again, our waitress informed us that they no longer carry the gluten free soy sauce. A few minutes later she came back to our table and told us it was gluten free soy sauce in a low sodium bottle. We would have just continued eating our sashimi without any sauce, but she kept coming back to convince us to use the low sodium soy sauce. I finally just told her I don't trust anything that isn't labeled gluten free. Then as we were paying our check, she was still trying to convince us that it was gluten free. read more

We came here on a Sunday for lunch. It's located in the Poughkeepsie train station with plenty of parking available. I was excited to see takoyaki on the menu, they were delicious and with plenty of octopus meat inside, but the order only had 5 takoyaki... wish it was more! Walking in, the place is very cozy and intimate. There is a decent amount of seating and has dim lighting, could be used as a cute date night spot or if you want some pretty good sushi. Going on a Thursday night, it wasn't busy at all and got seated right away. The server was friendly and welcoming, was attentive on anything we needed as well (filling waters, taking orders, boxes for leftovers). The food was great and worth the price tag, both the rolls (spicy tuna and spicy scallop) tasted fresh and my friend who ordered the special rolls was satisfied as his ordered was surprisingly large. Not the normal sized rolls, so if you do order the special rolls, they are sizable. If you're looking for sushi in the area, I would check this place out. read more

Pretty quite place, I noticed and seems more of take out then sit in, all things considered, the service was pretty lukewarm at best. Like half of the staff was sitting down eating then doing much. Still the ones working did acknowledge me and my friend and were polite and pretty patient considering it took a while to settle on what to get. The spicy seafood salad was alright, I mean could been spicier and the shredded cucumber could been much more thinner since it was way more the actual seafood anything. The sushi cake was very good, plenty of salmon and tuna, not too thick avocado slices and some finely diced mango plus plenty of sauce to spoon onto each bite. Did find it odd, when the menu listed the cake it said your two selected seafood and it did not list them and when I asked the waitress it was like she had no idea, I mean you should know the menu ahead of me since you work there. Angry dragon roll was definitely the best part, a fully loaded roll with a decent amount of lobster salad on top, crunchy shrimp tempura on the inside, the usual creamy avocado slices and spicy diced tuna as well, honestly hard to eat the pieces in one bite. I absolutely love, love sushi. And with that said, I'm also super picky when it comes to sushi. I've tried too many bad sushi places and I'm always uneasy when I try a new spot. The taste of bad sushi in your mouth lingers and it's an awful thing. I am happy to report that I actually enjoyed my sushi from this place. It wasn't the best I've ever had but it was pretty good. I would have preferred if the sushi rice was a bit more soft but it wasn't bad. Perfect sushi rice is truly an art. The sushi definitely tasted fresh, was ready quickly and the presentation was lovely. I would order from this location again. I'd love to try something new on my next visit. read more

We visited this place for my friend's birthday. This was my first time but she said it was really good when she had come before pre-COVID so we decided to check it out. I would say it's typical sushi. I ordered the volcano roll and the vegetable udon noodles. Although I enjoyed the volcano roll, they put so much crunchy stuff and sauce that it overpowered the actual roll. They also finely chopped up the "assorted fish" which made it creamy. It may be easier to bite into but I'm freaked out by the "assorted fish" description. What is it exactly? I don't know. I still ate it The udon noodles were awesome and so was the miso soup. The noodles never have enough vegetables for my taste but that's just me. The flavor was delicious. The soup was probably the best miso I've had anywhere. My friend ordered the tuna tartar and she said it was really good. She also enjoyed the Hudson roll because it had soft shell crab in it. My daughter ordered the Red Dragon roll and liked it. All rolls are beautifully displayed. I'm not sure I would seek out this place specifically to have dinner but would come back with friends if they chose it. There's so many other better places locally like Mizu in Hyde Park or Kobe and Bonsai in the Poughkeepsie area. read more

We have eaten here several times over the past several years and it's always been consistently good. We just so happen to always come for lunch and their lunch specials are always terrific! Great deal and you certainly get your moneys worth! Sushi is fresh, fried rice is huge, love their veggie gyoza and pork gyoza. The only thing that confuses me is that they fry the shumai. I have had their chicken teriyaki bento box, chicken and shrimp hibachi lunch, and it all tastes great. Good service and place is clean. Although we almost always sit outside. the sushi was average at best... the rice was dry and extra sticky. I asked to add salmon to my mango avacado roll and got charged an extra dollar just for the roll to come without the avocado. I asked the waitress for a new roll and she responded with "we don't do that". This place saves the day every time I leave the house pressed for time to catch my train and need some food by the station fast. If you ask the very friendly waitress that you need the food to come fast in order to catch the train in 20-30 minutes, they'll gladly whip up your meal that's delicious and quick! The lunch special is reasonable, you get a miso soup (yum!) or ginger miso dressed salad and their bento box with beef negimaki hits the spot. Wow second time come in here for lunch. The Sushi is fresh and they realize your on lunch or catching the train so they get your order in and let you enjoy. We have been going to Akari for years and have been pretty happy with them. Apparently they recently changed owners. Now, service is awful. We waited 45+ minutes waiting for shrimp fried rice for lunch and finally gave up because we had to catch a train. We budgeted an hour to eat, but ended up eating on the train. In other occasions we ordered tempura shrimp for around $8 which ended up being just 3 pieces. Felt cheated. The shrimp fried rice was always my go to meal, safe and also tasty. Since the new management the rice is awful. Just like run of the mill greasy fried rice from American Chinese restaurants. We keep giving this place second, third and fourth chances, because it used to be much, much better, but I think we are done with Akari Sushi. read more
