From the moment that I first emailed him to inquire about an engagement photo shoot, he was timely and professional. My husband and I hired Tom for our small wedding ceremony this past December and couldn't recommend him enough. After looking near and far for several weeks, we've stumbled across Tom Chen Photography. We really did not know what to expect, like many photographer websites, we only had their portfolio and comments of strangers on their websites. We took the chance with Tom and I must say that this was the best decision we've made so far on our wedding planning. Tom was very responsive in terms of phone calls, texts, emails. Replies are usually responded within 24 hours, which I thought was a very timely manner. Tom was AMAZING to work with. From the point of first contact, he was vigilant in making sure that we both got what we were looking for, even when we forgot to prioritize ourselves on our busy day. We found Tom on Yelp and met with several photographer's before deciding to go with him. No he was not the cheapest, no he was not the most expensive, but yes he did seem to be able to be more than capable to get the types of shots we were looking for. We tested him out for our engagement photos and since he did such a great job we were confidant he could capture some amazing shots for our wedding. He is very organized and polite, but to the point. He won't sugar coat things and tells you what he can and can't do. He is professional and works hard to get your photos edited and sent out in a timely fashion. His style is to capture your natural self and does not give too much direction. Admittedly, my wife and I are not super comfortable in front of a camera. Tom did his best to make us as comfortable as possible. He did have to tell us what to do sometimes because we are weirdos. ;p One general tip that doesn't necessarily apply to Tom specifically, but for whoever you go with is to be organized and prepared for your formal family pictures. We had a list but didn't have a dedicated person to help round up our family and have all the combinations ready to go. Originally we had one of the day of coordinators penciled in for this role but they needed to be somewhere else and we ended up not getting all the shots we wanted. It is just too busy for you to worry about so it is best to have a close family member assigned to this task. We are so happy to have gone with Tom and would recommend him to anyone looking for great, bright, natural looking photos. My husband and I planned a last minute, very small SF City Hall wedding. As it was very last minute and in JULY of all months, it was A) difficult to find a photographer we liked and B) a photographer who was available. I remembered a friend of mine had her engagement shoot done by Tom and the pictures came out beautiful so I reached out to him. Can't say that we're the easiest couple to work with because while most others have lots of opinions and know exactly what they want, we were pretty open to almost anything- to the point of being clueless. We're pretty silly and open people but not great in the limelight and being the center of attention. He met us at a Starbucks and asked great questions to get to know more about us as a couple so he could create a vision for us. Tom listed out all the packages and options to pick from and payment schedule. There are TONS of upgrade options with associated costs so it's important to note that from the very beginning. After getting our pictures and items included with the package we did a few upgrades and it was added costs that we didn't budget for but totally worth it for us. For couples on a very tight budget, make sure you know what you want upfront so you don't incur additional expenses. Alternatively you can plan some buffer room so you can make some upgrade decisions after you've seen how wonderful the pictures come out. On the day of the wedding, Tom showed up early (we were the late ones!!) and got to work as soon as we showed up. Things were a little crazy but he managed to get some amazing candid shots prior to the ceremony. He worked really well with our family and friends who had no idea what to do, quick to suggest poses, and make the parents feel comfortable in front of the camera. Came away with amazing shots of everyone but I absolutely loved the ones he got of us without the family and friends. A few months later, we also had a post wedding "engagement shoot" and it was way easier to take pictures without family and friends watching, just us and Tom. It was a fun afternoon and the pictures of the beach/hike came out amazing- to the point where it look unrealistic! He's quick with the camera and love all of the candid/natural pictures he is able to capture. Super late on this long review. Apologies. We are not into posting reviews, but we made the exception for Tom. After a long search, we found Tom on yelp and contacted him.We had a series of emotions and expressions that we wanted to be captured especially since we were trying to get a storyline in place. We wanted a few videos along with our photographs and Tom had just the right package for us. After the first phone call, we realised how accommodating he was towards the different range of expressions we required. He made us feel very comfortable, asked us plenty of questions as he tried to understand our requirements. The photoshoot was within a week and usually with such a time constraint, photographers stick to their comfort zone and tell you what needs to be done. But Tom carefully listened to all the requirements and also helped us storyboard the sequence of the emotions we needed. He made us practice our expressions and poses in front of the mirror during the week. We had shared a few sample pics with him and were amazed to see that he had carried them along with him on D-Day. Our location was at and around Baker Beach - San Francisco and the idea was to capture different landscapes including the Golden Gate, some greenery and some beach shots. He had carefully planned which background to capture for which emotion from our list. That was just great! Saved a lot of time. With multiple locations and 1 costume change, our 2 hour photoshoot went over by an hour but Tom was patient and making sure that he captured all the emotions from our list.(Which professional does that ??) As a photographer, his experience allows him to click at the right minute and the photos turn out to be just fabulous. As an editor, he focusses bringing the correct balance between the people and the surrounding and brings out the right feel of the image. As a director, he extracts the best out of you, your expressions and posture.(especially for the shy guys out there). As a person he is super warm and welcoming and he puts your needs first. We were totally charmed but I guess Tom wasn't done charming us.Before sending over the selected captures via a downloadable web url, he did a personal tete-a-tete with us where he unveiled all the clicks.Again, not many professionals do that. It was a Friday evening in July and our son and his long-time partner were getting married. The stage was set in beautiful Capitola and anticipation filled the air. Little did anyone know that Tom was capturing every precious moment. He was drawn to the energy of the guests and they/we were unconsciously drawn to him. When I was a girl, my favorite cousin (and best friend) used to bring wedding magazines when she came to visit. She loved to browse through them and daydream. I was never really into it. Instead, I suppose those childhood games taught me something about myself that stuck with me through the years until it was time for me to plan my own wedding. I knew that I wasn't that kind of bride. I saw myself as very low-key and expected the planning to be easy--city hall, a family dinner, simple. We had recently bought a home and wanted to get photographed in it while it was still nicely staged. Luckily, Tom responded right away to our appointment request. He showed up with creative props and was very punctual. Our kids were rowdy, but Tom was so patient with them, coaxing them to pose for the photo shoots that we needed. Tom Chen did mine and my fiancée engagement photos at the rose garden in San Jose. What an amazing job he did! My fiancé is uncomfortable taking pictures in front of people and Tom right off the bat made my fiancé laugh which started our session off just right.
