First I must apologize to Matt for being so late in providing my review. I was looking for a mechanic to work on my friends '06 Ford Mustang GT back in February '26. She initially took her car to the Ford dealership to diagnose an oil leak that affected engine performance. Ford quoted a total of 4 different supposed repairs that totaled over 6K. I've known for a long time not to trust what comes from a 'Stealership'. That's when I met Matt. Not only did he take time to thoroughly inspect the car, he ruled out all of these supposed repairs Ford quoted and isolated the problem to the main seal at the back of the block. Matt replaced the part in record time and was incredibly reasonably priced saving my friend 1000s of dollars. Matt has proven to be the most honest mechanic I've ever met and I'm absolutely indebted to him for saving our beloved ragtop 'pony'. I can honestly say without reservation that Hal Jones is the best mechanic shop I've experienced in the 34 years I've lived in Portland. First: This is what a mechanic shop should look like. No fancy magazines and coffees, just a focus on cars. Beautiful. Second: These guys are the best. I came in with a van that needed a carbuerator tune up to pass DEQ. Not only is Hal Jones one of the few shops in town that actually has experience with cars built before the 90s, they are focused on quality service. Why do I say that? Because they not only fixed my van, they TOOK IT TO DEQ AND GOT THE CERTIFICATE FOR ME. That's right. I came in with two problems, and they fixed both of them. And if that weren't enough, I got a call from Ron (owner) a few nights before I was due to come back into town. His message said that the van was fixed and through DEQ and then dove into options for getting it back to me in case I needed it. Never mind that I was coming back on a sunday when they were closed, the focus was on me having my automobile for my pleasure. Amazing. To make a long story short, I will come back to HJ for anything and everything related to my cars for one simple reason: After Ron told me he could leave the keys and passcode out, or make himself available to get my van back to me on a day of rest, he went into a 3rd option involving me getting a ride from the airport. I have to say, it is hard to find an auto shop that really puts the customer first over their own interests. Hal Jones is a rare breed that still will give their clients an honest answer. I had an issue with an error code and they took a quick look and did a quick cleaning of my fuel inlet and sent me on my way. They didn't charge me anything and said that if the error comes back they could fix it, but it's really expensive and could happen again. They mentioned that the capless fuel system is just a bad design. I would recommend other going here to have their car worked on. read more

Hal never fixes anything that don't need to be fixed. He fixed my clutch one time and it was in real bad shape. I think it cost about $600, which, if you don't know, is a real good price for major clutch repair. read more

These guys are pros. My 66 mustang pony coupe was worrying me with some severe performance issues until finally she refused to start. Some great friends have their vehicles serviced here and I thought I'd give them a try based off my friend's stellar reviews. Turns out they're well versed in the ways of older, carbureted engines and sourced the problem to an electronic condenser beneath the starter...a technology that's been obsolete for like 30 years. They fixed my baby and she was running great until one night she died on me and left me stranded. I returned the car to Hal's and they were just as upset as me. I was initially told I would receive the car the next day but received a phone call from Ron, the owner, who told me that they would stay late and get the part needed (turns out the new condenser was a piece of crap) AND that they would pick me up from my house that evening to ensure I drove my car home that night which is just what they did. I thanked him for his dedication to service and ensured my return business. Car trouble is no fun but at least these guys work to earn your trust and your hard earned dollars. If you're going to go through the trouble of owning a car and need it serviced, these guys get my support, hands down. read more

We have taken our 1990 Volvo and 1998 Jeep to Hal Jones since 2005. They are friendly and honest. They do not recommend work that is not needed. It is easy to schedule an appointment and they are prompt with service. It is easy to pay and pick up the car after hours. They do good work. Gee, what else can I say? Absolute bare minimum in service. It's apparent that the quick and easy solution is what they go for when an unsuspecting female walks in. They literally wrapped a battery cable that had melted, with electrical tape instead of replacing it. When I called to ask about the work that was done I was told that replacing the battery cable would have cost $800. Anyone with any sense of pride would have done the job properly. It's disgraceful and they should be ashamed of the quality of work (or lack there of) they let leave their shop. read more

Ron and the guys are my heroes. Another place did maintenance and told me my brakes were shot ... I paid them $1,000 for everything they told me about, and held off on the brakes. I take it into Hal Jones and they show me that my brakes are absolutely fine ... the other place was just trying to rip me off. Later, I bring my wife's car in for checkup and service b/c she's going to be doing a lot of driving for work. I didn't have an organized record of the car's maintenance, but I did have a stack of every single service receipt since she bought the car ... and Ron just took that and said he'd look through it for everything he needed. Then instead of finding things to charge me for, they billed me just for labor and reported that the car was looking absolutely great. Finally, I had a coolant leak in my car. Uh oh. Could be spendy. Ron calls and reports that it's a water pump issue. Double uh oh. Rather than replacing it, though, he tried a stop-leak compound and said it seemed to be working ... fingers crossed, but they easily could've charged me the $500 for a new water pump (with timing belt work and all that jazz). Instead, $99 later, my car is leak-free. read more

This small family owned shop walks the extra mile to make sure their customers are happy. It is now operated by the next generation and I am very pleased with the results. One time last year, I took my truck in to have it looked at because it was not running well. They checked it over and said it was not the engine, but rather the transmission. They did not charge me and directed me to a reputable shop that took care of my problem in a fine manner. This week, I had my vehicle towed into their shop because it died. They checked it over and said it needed a new alternator and battery. I was quoted a price which seemed reasonable. The work was done in short order. To my surprise the bill was $70 less than I was quoted. I was told that they found the part for less than expected and passed the savings on to me. Like, when does that ever happen? this place is a nightmare! I made two appointments to have a car I was thinking about buying. both times I brought it in they forgot I was coming and then gave me a hard time about me insisting they work on this car. making feel like I was a bad customer, when they clearly don't have their office organized enough to write down an appointment. They told me the timing chain was great, among other raving reviews of the car. now, 1500 miles later on this car I bought based on their recommendation, I have to put $1000 into a timing chain. my new mechanic says it was loose for so long that is also broke the guide that holds it in place which is why it will be so expensive to fix. The car was noisy when it started up, and I originally had said something to Hal Jones mechanic. he said it was normal, though I'd never had a car that made that noise. The minute this new mechanic started it up and heard the noisey motor, he know what it was. why didn't Hal Jones know? why did I pay for a inspection to buy this car if they couldn't evaluate it properly. Don't bother making an appointment at Hal Jones, they will forget you anyway. I'm tired of reading rave reviews of a place and taking the recommendation of the review and then getting bad service, so I decided to give my bad review so someone else might not get sucked into a bad place to go. read more
