I was very disappointed (and shocked) by this business owner's response to us today. I have been a lifetime resident of the town where this shop is located and have had dealings there in the past. About 30 years ago, my mother had him put a 2C Kenya diamond (?) onto her antique wedding band and I had a 1C one put into an older ring of mine. He did a great job and I still have them both even though I no longer wear that type of jewelry. My adult son was visiting from Florida and needed a minor watch repair. I suggested we drop it off there so he could have it fixed before he went back. Mr. Harris was extremely rude to him and said that he did not do watch repairs (even though I recall having some done in the past and his website advertises that as one of his services). He said he only replaces batteries so, since I had some that needed that, I asked how much that was. He replied , "as much as I can get". I assumed he was joking, but when we all laughed, he said "I don't do watches, I'm a jeweler." My son asked if he knew anyone in the area who did any watch work and he replied, "Nobody." His demeanor wasn't appropriate for a longtime business owner. I have seen this gentleman in church and have read good reviews for the business, so maybe we caught him on a bad day. I just felt the need to leave a review so that maybe he'll be kinder to potential customers in the future. read more

Called for a price quote for a pin for my watchband. Womn who answered the phone told me $10. Great. Went there, had a great conversation, told her ( her husband was doing the repair) I had some gold items from my late mother that I would like to design something more functional. All good. Watch gets fixed. Husband tells me it is $20. I told him your wife told me $10 over the phone..his response was " He had to make the pin for the watch." Really? make a pin? I call BS and sad for them I will NEVER go back and NEVER bring the $10,000 or so worth of gold that I was discussing. Wow. Talk about shortsighted. Enjoy the extra $10 read more

I have been a customer of Tom Harris Jeweler since moving to Ventnor in 2007. Tom and Carol Harris represent the many hard working small family-owned business at the Jersey Shore and hands down they are the best at what they do. Tom is truly gifted as a jeweler creating beautiful hand-made original pieces at his customers' requests. Carol knows her stuff and provides the best customer service and individual attention to each and every customer. I have purchased many pieces from them--rings, necklaces, bracelets and have never not been satisfied. In fact, I have referred friends and family to them and they too have purchased jewelry from Tom Harris--again, all satisfied customers. It's sad to see a few unhappy customers write such mean-spirited reviews when I know these two people are hard working and care about each and every customer being happy with their purchases. I've been in their shop to say hello and have seen firsthand how they greet others who come by and shop; it's a genuine welcoming atmosphere. I recently bought a pair of earrings and I've worn them every day since and have received numerous compliments. I can't imagine the last review about poor quality when I've never had an issue with any of the jewelry I've purchased from Tom Harris. I recently visited Tom Harris jewelers to have him shorten a necklace into an ankle bracelet. Tom was pleasant and accepted the work, saying that it would be ready within a week, and to bring cash on the pick up date. I was excited to retrieve my new reworked piece of jewelry, as I really loved the necklace, but needed an ankle bracelet, hence I made the sacrifice. It was about four hours after wearing the anklet for the first time that it burst open while I was in the shower and all of the beads, except a few, slid down the drain. I brought the chain back to Tom the next day, and was naturally upset that I spent a decent amount of cash to have the item fixed, and now I had nothing to show for it. I requested a refund and was told "there are no guarantees". If it had been a month or two later, and I was Wearing the anklet daily, he may have had a case that there was too much wear and tear. It was a perfectly good necklace, and after he reworked it into an ankle bracelet. It broke right away. He would not take any responsibility nor refund my cash. Since I did not use a charge card, I had no recourse and left the shop very distraught. Tom's attitude was not professional or cordial. It was he who suggested I could even post a review on yelp. I have never reviewed on yelp, or any other site, but feel the community and public should be wary and find a more accommodating jeweler when they need items of value fixed. It's a principle thing with me. I lost my possession and also money. Which was the least of it. Most savvy business owners know, reputation and customer satisfaction is important. I have never been disrespected or been spoken to so rudely in my life. I wanted to support local retailer even though it was 300-500% or more higher than any other similar store. I bought a pair of costume rhinestone hoop earrings and the band ring for vacation. The cost was almost $400. When I opened the first hoop it fell apart and collapsed like tissues paper and 1/3 if the stones fell out. I never wore the earrings even one time nor the ring. My fiancé and his son who were standing within a foot if me witnessed the whole thing in the moment. They and their extended family and friends have gone to this store for 30 years and said not to worry that they are reputable and will take care of it. Well, not only will they not take care of it - they are some of the absolutely rudest people I have ever encountered- they actually brought me to tears due to their insults. I stayed very calm and asked if they would exchange or repair. They said they absolutely would not and the repair would be $100 on a piece I paid $225 for that probably would be $10-20. I mentioned that the family stated they had patronized the store for 30 years and said they were honorable and would warrant their pieces. I politely asked again if they would do anything and I received a resounding NO. So,buyer beware! The case of sparkles looks beautiful but literally falls apart with the slightest touch and they will do nothing but be as rude as possible. Went in to ask an honest question about measuring ring size for my own knowledge. I have not had my measurements taken before so I was curious to see what size I am based off of a personal ring I brought in for reference. I was met with a frown and the statement, "sorry, I don't do that". The woman obliged to measure my finger and said she won't do it again. Not only was I stunned by her reluctance but automatically turned off from actually asking to look at jewelry. I was surprised by her reaction to a new customer - she could have asked specs about the ring to gain consumer knowledge for what I was looking for to base her own sale off of my inquiries. But she was quick to turn me away, therefore, I won't be returning. read more
