This place is small, it's a little off to the side located physically on Barry as opposed to Broadway, it doesn't have a ton of seats but this is my favorite Thai food in Chicago and I've been to a good amount of Thai restaurants. I've eaten there a number of times and have never been disappointed. My favorite dish is the garlic and pepper stir fry with either chicken or tofu. Tom Yum has moved to the top of my local Thai take-out place list. I had a couple horribly ridiculous delivery experiences with Joy's, and the food is nowhere near good enough to compensate. Thaiday got worse in both quality and quantity. And PS Bancock is some of the worst shlock I've wasted time chewing in years. So we got around to trying Tom Yum and were very happy. Nothing special about the Basil Chicken Rolls, and they were solid. The wanton soup was excellent, with large wontons and a delicious, flavorful broth. My gf loved her green curry (and had plenty to spare), and my larb was great (and big), though it could have used just a little more lime. Overall a solid meal from top to bottom. I live in the neighborhood and just found this gem here on Yelp. I dined in with a friend on a Saturday night, and there were just three other people eating instead. The dining room is VERY small, so I'd call ahead if you have a party larger than 2 coming in. I ordered a standard pad thai with tofu to test this place out. Great Thai food in a cute spot in Lakeview! The whole restaurant probably has about 12 seats and they don't take reservations so you may need to take your food to go but it's worth it! Flavor-wise, it's definitely one of the best Thai places I've gone to in Chicago. They have one chef who's from Thailand who cooks Their curry spices are on point and my go-to pad see ew has great thin noodles that I gobbled up! They also have some great appetizers like crab rangoon, chicken satay, and beef skewers The downsides- 1. We came in with a big group (we took over the entire restaurant), which they accommodated with some pre-ordering. But then unfortunately the timing was a bit off likely because of the size of our group. I got my entrees when we were still eating our appetizer and by the time the last person in our group got their entree about 15 minutes later, my food wasn't very hot anymore. 2. The portions aren't quite as big as some of the other Thai restaurants (think Siam Rice) so you may feel like you're not getting quite the bang for your buck. After literally years of trying to find "my place" for Thai, I found a gem in Tom Yum. The food hits the mark every time, is artfully prepared, tastes made to order and leaves me wanting more. The portions are not huge but filling and well worth the price. The noodles are my go to, pad Thai, pad si ewe, and they are delectable always. Staff is truly kind and caring. Ok the taste of the food was decent, not great. The amount of peanut sauce provided for an order of chicken satee was hardly enough for 2 chicken strips. They need to double or triple it. They did not follow instructions ("please keep peanut sauce from rama broccoli off to the side"...they did not do that...mixed it all in creating a problem for me). The biggest problem however was the service. I called in my order and was told 30 minutes but upon my arrival 30 minutes later I had to wait another 20 minutes. Another customer came in who also was told to sit and wait. I tried to help by saying "just tell me an hour and make it easier..." the answer? We have a small kitchen and we're busy. Ok, understood. But i'm busy too and need to rely on what I'm told...cashier was not very friendly but to her credit, apologized upon my departure. So, i'll try it again and I encourage folks to patronize the place...I want all new local businesses to succeed! But...they need to improve service, portions of sauce, and follow instructions....it's going to be critical to eventual success. Again, taste of the food was decent, not the best...but good enough. With better service, I'd likely return much more quickly than I am going to...I was tempted to give it 2 stars, but I'm adding the third one in based on hope for improvement. read more
