I should have followed my own advice. If you walk into a restaurant on a beautiful day at noon and it's empty, turn around immediately and gtfo. But oh no, like a dope I order. Man, was that a mistake. I got 2 slices - one beef and one pepperoni. Started with the beef. Should have quit after the first bite. Luke warm. Crust was wretched. Crisp, but God-awful. Sauce? Like sauce strained through a used jock strap. Don't even get me started on the rest. The other slice was just as bad. As I sat there doing yeoman work I thought, "I should stop and go somewhere else." Unfortunately, I felt like I paid for this and I don't want to waste my money. Now having eaten, I find my stomach asking "WTF?" Easily the worst pizza I have ever had...and not just by a little bit. This is galactically bad pizza. Seriously. If you're thinking about pizza (and you are if you're reading this) just move on from here. There's a Casey's close by. Stop there or anywhere but here. read more

Tomaso's Pizza is consistently voted one of the best places for pizza in the Cedar Rapids metro. We first started eating slices years ago when the business began and can testify that it remains one (if not *the*) best pizza place in the area -- and also that the quality/taste seems to be degrading, especially over the past year. (It just doesn't taste as good as it did a year ago. Change in the crust or sauce ingredients?) Part of the success that Tomaso's has enjoyed is that it is a big fish in a little pond. Drop the business in Chicago with several competitors... well, I don't think it would fare nearly as well. There are three pie types served: Detroit with a no-lip, caramelized crust. Chicago deep-dish. New York thin. If you decide to eat in the restaurant, don't be prepared for anything fancy (the foam plates are serve-yourself near the drink dispenser). And, you should also be prepared to wait a minimum of 30 minutes to receive your pie. If you get the pies to go, be sure to either ask for the pizza to be cut or to have a pizza cutter at home. You are going to pay quite a bit more than you would for a typical chain pizza, but the truth is that chain pizzas can't come close to competing. read more

Have not been to this place for years but I often see it while driving thru town and figured it was time to give it another try after receiving a coupon. This review is strictly for the "lunch buffet" as they call it, which consists of 2 pieces of pizza and a drink. Me and a co worker were the only ones there besides one employee cooking the pizza. I could tell very quickly this wasn't a popular lunch spot but I soon found out why. Me and my guest were not impressed with the pizza. It tasted as if it was under a heat lamp for quite some time. For two working men 2 slices of pizza just isn't enough. It was all self serve so the service was good lol. I don't think I will be returning anytime soon due to other better pizza options in the area. Maybe the pizza is better if you have a pizza made to order. This is one of the better pizzas in the area. They do a thin crust, a deep dish and a "detroit" style, which is a medium crust with the toppings spread out to the edges. The in-store dining experience is interesting, paper plates and cups. It is usually staffed by kids as well. Im always suspect when there is no adult supervision. I recommend the thin crust. It is on the spendy side, but it is one of the better pies in the area and is competitively priced among the other decent pizzas that you will find around here. read more

Detroit style pizza is freaking amazing! The cheese is caramelized over the crust with a slight burnt effect. They also serve New York style and Chicago style crust, but D-Town is the way to go here....particularly the Mambo Combo (supreme-esque). The place is pricey, but once or twice a year for some tasty pizza and beer with friends, is worth every penny. read more

Bought myself a medium Detroit Tex-Mex Pizza. Not the best I ever had but you can't really go wrong with a pizza. Portion is huge! 1.5 slices and I'm done. It was made fresh, which is good. Flavor-wise: 3.5 stars Price-wise: 2.5 stars (granted it's slightly cheaper than Zoey's) 3 Stars overall. Not sure if I'm gonna order the same dish again before trying the other flavors. read more

Poor customer service with good but very expensive pizza! $30 = pizza +2 pops When we got there...we explained that we were first time customers and asked about specials or coupons... She said there were none. We made our order and grabbed a menu pamphlet to look at while we waited..... Inside the menu pamphlet there were SEVERAL coupons..... Including one for cheese bread.... I asked if they'd honor the coupon since I had previously asked and was rejected by both her and the manager. I would have canceled my order and left had we known the area. read more

This place needs some major help. I don't understand why this pizza is so popular. First of all the quality is terrible and the taste is mediocre at best. They need to learn how to manage their staff as well. They have 6 people around the table, one who is getting pizzas out, one who is getting them put together and put in the oven and the rest congregated doing who knows what. Then they have one person stuck answering phones and dealing with people as they come in. The phone kept ringing off the hook and instead of one multi line phone they have like 4 different phones they answer and tell people to hold and then set it aside. It was almost 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged me, and people kept coming in standing around with nobody to even great them. My suggestion is they need one person dedicated to just taking phone calls and phone orders, one person who handles walk in traffic and at least 2 people getting pizzas out. Oh yeah and it was almost 40 minutes past quote time before my pizzas went out because of this. No food no matter how good is worth this mess. My suggestion go elsewhere. read more

Really like the thin crust pizza, but have to write that the customer service may need some work. After receiving the wrong pizza (both size and ingredients) I called to let them know. I understand mistakes happen and don't get short or pushy with the staff (especially after being in the hospitality industry myself for nearly 8 years), but naturally we wanted the size we paid for and the ingredients we ordered. I explained the mix-up to "Carol" and she said, "We can't come get the pizza so what exactly do you want me to do?" I told her that we live nearby so it's no problem for us to come back, which I truly meant. It wasn't a big deal, we just wanted the right thing. When I asked if they still had our order, she said yes they did and she needed to get off the phone as she was busy and hung up. When they went back in, the boy at the counter jerked the old pizza out of my BFs hands and was just acting grumpy and rude. I just thought it was weird they seemed to have no protocol for when a mistake happens, crappy attitudes to top it off, and made me feel like I was wasting their time. Overall, very good. The Detroit-style pizza is to die for. My only quibble is that they could go a little heavier on the toppings. Their chicken wings are also excellent. Sometimes I order just those to-go and don't even get a pizza. It is a bit pricey, though. I would go more often if the prices were more reasonable. As it is now, I go only 3-4 times a year. They do have decent deals on pizza-by-the-slice at lunch, though. read more

About five years ago we ate at Tomasos in Marion and had the Detroit style combo. Thought it was the best pizza we had ever tasted. Have also had pizza at Geno's East in chicago, two of the best places in Florida, the best of Las Vegas, etc. Last week we returned to Cedar Rapids for a wedding. Couldn't wait to go over to Marion for pizza. All I can say is give me the recipe and I'll open a franchised joint here in Oregon. The best pizza ever. Pizza Bar at lunch??? Not buffet but bar...ok. $8 for two slices of cold pizza and a drink. Can't really evaluate the taste of the pizza since it was cold...tasted like day old cold frozen pizza. I think I know why the place was empty at Noon on a weekday in a busy retail area. read more

This place is now under the same ownership as the Hiawatha. What does this mean? The pizza is actually good. I recently tired the Marion one (I've been a loyal Hiawatha customer for years). All I will say is this place has improved. Go eat there. Support it. We need more places like this in Marion. read more

After a dreadful first and last experience at Zoey's, decided to try Tomaso's after reading such promising reviews on line. I now find said reviews very dubious. First and most important, customer service was non-existant as they acted like they were doing us a favor just by acknowledging our coming in. Maybe just directing us that everything we would require for eating there was to be obtained ourselves in the back of the place where the soda machine is would be helpful. This we had to find out by watching other customers (glad someone knew). Second were the two medium pizzas (approx $50 for a chicago style and thin crust) which we recieved at the 48 minute mark of sitting down, well prepared but nothing to get excited about. The thin crust lacked cheese which we thought important for a cheese pizza and the other was rather thin on ingredients as well. Was not sure why a spattering of cold tomato sauce was considered a good idea. Winding up with without so much as a thank you from staff upon leaving. Wow! Keep your attitude, wasn't even close to being average and at those prices, your definitely not doing me any favors. read more
