They have great food, well worth the small wait compared to other locations that profess to be higher tier pizza joints, and friendly staff. You're really can't go wrong with this place. Their pizza is always spot on. We ordered medium, with the Detroit style crust. My recommendation, is to get a large because the leftovers are just as good as when it comes out, hot and fresh. It always feels like a small town pizza joint inside. First reason why it gets four stars as opposed to five is because you have to order at the counter and then go sit down and wait for your food as opposed to having table service. The second reason is because they're pretty proud of their pizza and it's reflective and their pricing. Not totally outrageous but close. read more

I ordered a large Detroit style pizza on my birthday and when I got it home the center was mushy and had to eat it with a fork as you could not pick it up and eat a slice and the crust was burned to a crisp. For a $30 dollar pizza I was disappointed to say the least and this will be the last pizza I order from them. Just tried the new location of the "World Headquarters" of Tomaso's (not sure of the still call the original location that but when it was first opened that was what we called it). Love the nostalgic look and the way they have remodeled a difficult to use building. We did carry out of our usual Detroit Style deep dish. I truly appreciated that the young man asked me if I wanted my pie cut - I didn't hear him at first so he thought I was confused and kindly but not in a condescending tone said - When you are transporting the pizza, it travels better "uncut" - this helped me realize what he had asked. I appreciated his approach to customer service and to the quality of product and experience that has been the intention of Tomaso's since the original owner traveled around to the best pizza cities to come up with his own recipes. The move has done nothing to diminish the quality of this product. read more

Walk in and you know you are in a real pizza house. Service is good. Order at the counter and pay. Get your beverages--glasses are at the fountain pop dispenser where table wear, plates, napkins, cheese and peppers are located. The sit down, have a real conversation with friends and the pizza will be delivered to your table. There are crust choices: thin or extra thin, thick with a lip or without. All are great. We drove four hours round trip to eat at Tomaso's! All that pizza ended up in our bellies, and it was amazing. We always get a Detroit-style deep dish. Somehow the cheese melts on the crust and gets a little burnt and is all sorts of amazing. They do have beer on tap, and some pretty cool new beer glasses. Worst experience in Marion. We came in around seven PM. No one greeted us. I had to ask if we could dine in. The manager appeared reluctant, but allowed us to order and dine there. He told me where to stand and order and after I complied and got a menu he then informed it would be thirty minutes for my order and then looked around and changed it to thirty to forty five minutes. There was no explanation, and only one other group in the restaurant. I just laughed, gathered my eighty two year old mother and left. They made us feel unwanted. I would not go back. read more

I was very disappointed in this pizza. I ordered a stuffed Chicago deep dish medium three topping pizza and it was pathetic. This pizza was anemic and it was supposed to to be thick crust stuffed and three toppings! Charged me $26 for one inch thick pizza the size of a dinner plate. Had the chance to finally try Tomasos. I had the New York style half cheese half beef, chicken, and mushroom. The crust was very crisp, and thin probably my favorite thing about this pizza. I enjoyed the toppings other then the chicken didn't have much taste to it, would not be able to tell if it was on the pizza or not. Also the sauce on the pizza was ok I personally was not to impressed, maybe it could of used a little spice or some sort of seasoning. Overall I think i would give this visit 3.5/5 stars. Tomaso's is not what it once was. It was a real treat to have a Tomaso's pizza in the past and was the closest to a consistantly high quality genuine Italian pizza I have ever eaten in the local community. But the last few pizza's I have purchased during the past year have been less than stellar. The only words I can use to describe them are 'ordinary' and 'over-priced'. The pizza's have been unusually tasteless of late; cheese the no longer tastes as if it was genuine aged mozzarella. The pizza's toppings are skimpy, short of flavorful tomatoes, and show no sign of appropriate seasonings. The dough that is used is either improperly baked (perhaps the wrong temperature on the ovens) or has not been allowed to cure a day as real pizza dough should be in order to give it that special yeasty tang. Tomaso's is not bad, it just is not as good as it once was. read more

I got a hankering for a good Detroit-style pizza that I couldn't shake. Hubs was willing to indulge me so I consulted Yelp for a little help. Tomaso's seemed to be the place to go. The place was small and crowded. The crowded aspect boded well for decent pie. There is no table service, so you just wait in line to place your order then hang out until your pie is ready. While waiting in line ,check your phone for coupons, it should be easy to find at least $3 off online. Remember to grab yourself some self-service dishes, silverware and drinks while you wait for a table. Someone will walk the hot pie to your table when it is ready. The pizza was good but it is most definitely not Detroit style. First, it was round. Detroit style pizza is always square or rectangular. It's these great crispy, crunchy corners that are paramount to a great Detroit pie. Second, the sauce was on top like a Chicago style pie. This is strange and prevents the nice brown spots on the cheese of the Detroit style pie. (By the way, they also do a Chicago style pie at Tomaso's but we ordered Detroit.) These two essential differences ruin the Detroit experience. That said, the pizza did have a decent crust and the sauce was fresh tasting. The pie was good, just not Detroit style and I wouldn't have driven that far for a fake Detroit pie. But as a neighborhood pizza joint the place is great. read more

I'm shocked because I thought the pizza tasted like it was from the freezer section. The kids got a thin crust pepperoni that was bad. Our taco pizza was ok. Tomaso's has what can easily be described as one of the best pizza in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area. They have two good approaches to unique styles of crust, Chicago and Detroit, to complement their thin crust option. They use high quality ingredients. They serve a few good beers on tap and the environment is friendly and open (the kitchen is visible from the seating area). As someone who has lived in the Chicagoland area and Ann Arbor and experienced some of the best pizza in the Midwest, and who has searched for good pizza in the CR/IC region, Tomaso's is representative of the best. Simply put, the Detroit Deep was awesome. About 1/2 the thickness of your typical Chicago deep dish, but with caramelized crust. Pretty original crust (IMHO), somewhat similar to Jet's square pieces, but these are a little more airier and cut in typical pie shape. I'll certainly have it it again soon. Would have given it 5 stars, but the service was horrible :( One of the girls was completely rude and acted like us being their was the worst thing in the world. read more

I can't believe it's been almost four years since I last visited Tomaso's, so it was high time I checked back in to see if it's as good as I remembered. It is. Tonight we ordered a Chicago-style Pepperoni. It's NOT as deep-dish as Zoey's, but that's not a slam, either. This is miles better than your average Dominos/Papa Johns pizza. I love that they put crushed tomatoes on top of the cheese -- if you're a tomato fan, this is your place. I also like the fact that they don't muck up the holy trinity of cheese/crust/tomatoes with a bunch of oregano. Nit-picky stuff which prevents me from giving Tomaso's five stars: the cheese bread we ordered came with a nice-sized container of COLD marinara. Yuck. The location in downtown Marion has a home-y, family-friendly atmosphere which I like. It's comfortable without being stuffy. And I didn't find the prices unreasonable. We paid less than twenty bucks for a medium Chicago style pepperoni pizza with an order of cheese bread and marinara sauce, plus a drink. If you're hankering for a good pizza and the lines at Zoey's are long, you could do a lot worse than Tomaso's. read more

Good pizza, not so great service. The Detroit Deep was a delicious crust. We got half Hawaiian (chef was generous with the pineapple) and half pepperoni and green olives. The green olives were very salty and larger than the ones you get in a can. Good if you like value for your olives, bad if you have high blood pressure. Having never been there before we were looking for a little guidance when we walked in the door--which could have been obvious because of the bewildered looks on our faces. We didn't get a lot of help from the cashier/staff. She took our order and since all we saw was bottled beverages behind her I assumed that's all that was available. After ordering the pizza, picking up plates, silverware, napkins, and two bottles of iced tea, we sat down at a booth. Lo and behold a soda machine was right behind us. We decided to get something from the fountain anyway, so I walked back up to the cashier and ordered two fountain drinks. As I paid the $4.50 for two glasses the female cashier told me it was unlimited refills. Then she said that "not a lot of people know we have fountain pop." Gee...I wonder why that is? I was hoping for a little better experience especially because of all the high ratings on Yelp. read more

On the way back from my road trip.... Well, we stayed in that horrible hotel in Clinton (the Regency, don't go there, warn people about it, it's worse than hell, spread the news), and then drove through Cedar Rapids to have a sort of brunch meal with my sister, since her apartment was still being fixed. She dropped us by Tomaso's, having been raving about it to me for a solid year. And with good reason--Amy is not lightly driven to liking to eat out. Yes, indeed, it was for a good reason. The Chicago Style pizza is not truly Chicago Style in the Deep Dish sense but it matches other kinds of pizzas also roughly following the Chicago format and available in the Chicago area, which I rather like more. They were easy about agreeing to substitutions, and every bite of the huge pizza which was the sole thing we got for three people was utterly exquisite, and very filling. Service was prompt, there were lots of spices available in a spice rack for seasoning the pizza further, and, uh, the pizza is served on a metal pan so I don't get the thing about cutting it on styrafoam plates. They're there for setting it on as you eat. Anyhow, my only little tweaky complaint is that they don't have a coffee pot back there somewhere to satisfy my endless need for more and more coffee, but that's it. Tomaso's is starting to drop in my book the last few times the service has been poor and length of time to get my food has increased it's one pizza for take out that should take 20 minutes max if your busy busy and they are not even that busy they didn't have many orders up or many people in here.
