We are veggies who always struggle to find quality food when we're traveling. Well we were driving thru on a long trip from WV to WI and were pulling off I-64 to eat lunch at Applebee's, which we weren't too excited about. But a quick Yelp search revealed this place. Normally we wouldn't drive that far from the highway but we were curious why a pizza place in Normalville, KY (no offense) would have 4.5 stars. Well, we're happy to report that it was worth the short journey. The restaurant was new with a fresh decor and very clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. When we walked in all the tables were full, which I consider to be a good sign, but by the time we finished placing our order at the counter one had cleared. I had a margarita pizza and chopped salad lunch special, my wife had the vegan power salad and my son had a kid's pizza special. All were delicious. After our meal I asked the staff for a good ice cream spot and they recommended Spoonful Of Sugar around the corner which was a cute shop in a refurbished Jewelry store. It was cool to spend a minute walking thru this neat little Main St downtown area. It's clear that the local businesses and government have really committed their efforts to make the area family-friendly and to draw people into town. They have succeeded in our case. I recommend this place and I will return next time we pass thru. read more

I would return and we had a nice evening. However as far as fire brick pizza goes... I can't give it more than three stars. We had the salad, cheese pizza,and Greek pizza. It was all fine but was lacking in flavor. I was most disappointed with the Greek pizza. They have a nice venue and a good set-up. I just wasn't that impressed with the recipes they're using. read more

This place is a great addition to downtown. I have eaten here a few times and while the food isn't amazing, it is very good. They have a very friendly staff and a great environment, which up's their score considerably. The last two times I ordered the dough was chewy, the bread didn't have enough flavor and the dipping sauce was stone cold. It could be just me and my pallet, but it wasn't my cup of tea. It does however, feel lighter on the stomach than other chain pizzerias. Which makes it a great lunch spot and worth checking out. If your in town give them a shot. read more

On a climbing trip and needed something to do on a rest day, so we ventured about 40 minutes out of our way and ended up going here. This place was a shockingly present surprise. Super clean, very quiet, and a warm friendly staff. I just kept wondering why this place wasn't packed! Apparently it's rather seasonal, so that's good to know. The pizza and cheese bread were exceptional. The prices are probably too low if anything, so make sure you leave a generous tip. I wouldn't change a thing. What a gem this place is. read more

Exactly what Mt. Sterling needed! A beautiful, historic building turned into a pizzeria (very smashing tomato, but more quaint), complete with a fire brick oven and jazz music! The restaurant is very clean. brick walls give a classic touch. The staff are all very helpful and nice, even physically came out to our table to check on us! So far, we have had the everything calzone, margherita pizza, four cheese pizza, pepperoni pizza, and of course the crisp caesar salad. The prices are amazing (8.99 for a 16 inch!) and the lunch specials can't be beat. A fresh alternative to the greasy fast food that has plagued our town for many years. Very pleased! read more

This is one of my favorite pizza places. Their brick oven pizzas are awesome. Our favorite is the traditional pepperoni pizza with traditional sauce-such a smooth and delightful flavor. The crust is perfect! We also highly recommend the soups and salads. I absolutely love their chopped salad with herbed tomato dressing that they make in house. My husband has tried their chili and baked potato soups and they are also delish. Last but not least, they do not serve alcohol but their iced tea is wonderful! You won't be disappointed in the food here. The building is also quaint with the most beautiful brass chandelier. Definitely a place will we continue to return to regularly. read more

Standing in a McDonald's in a rural area of Kentucky, we decided to forget McDonald's and check Yelp to see if there was any cute little eating place nearby. we found this five-star restaurant about 20 miles away so hopped back in the car and landed at Tomatoes and Flames. Not only was the restaurant adorable the whole town of Mount Sterling was charming as well. the owner greeted us and gave us lots of tips of things to see and do in town. the food was outstanding. We we selected the lunch special: personal pizzas and salads and one had soup in lieu of salad which was tomato basil soup, the best he'd ever eaten and my Caesar salad was the best I've ever had and we were all pleased with our delicious pizzas. be sure and try the local soft drink ale81 we think?, he said it was kind of like ginger ale. We were so pleased that we had checked Yelp and found this perfect lunch spot! read more

1-star is for concept and location. 0-stars for service. Food is unknown. Food may be okay, but won't ever know. Decided to venture down to the new place in town and see what the fuss was all about. Most of the tables were full, so must be good-right? Spent a few minutes looking at the menu on the wall and deciding what to order and then sat down at a table and waited for a server. Owner was wandering around the restaurant chatting folks up while we waited. After a few minutes I assumed that maybe you ordered at the counter, so I headed up to order some food. I stood at the counter watching the "chef" sweep the floor behind the counter. When he finally looked up he asked if he could help me. I said I'd like to order. "Chef's" response? "We are out of dough". Really?!? I am in a smallish restaurant (8-10 tables), wait staff standing around pulling fingers, owners both chatting at tables, and no one can tell me they were out of dough? So we policed up our things from the table and headed out the door. Owner never said a word to us, wait staff acted as if we were invisible, and "chef" kept sweeping. Maybe they should open a janitorial service instead ? read more

Historic type downtown Mt. Sterling space. Nice enough little dining room. Looks to be a wood fire Italian DaVinci oven cooking the pizza's, which is pretty standard. I ordered a standard pepperoni pizza and it was very good. Loved the sauce. Maybe the best sauce and cheese blend I have had ever inside the state of Kentucky. Only drawback of their pizza is in the center/middle of the pizza it is a bit of a soupy grease bomb. However I like a greasy type slice, but it makes the crust a bit too wet and soggy in the middle as well. One thing they could improve upon to get a 5 star rating. A different crust that cooks up crispier or at least more firmed up in the middle of the pie. The grease is fine as long as the crust isn't soggy/soupy in middle. Still a great pizza. Reminds me very much of Grey Goose in Lexington, but way better cheese, pepperoni and sauce. If they had Gray Goose crust crisp it would be the best pizza in KY. Now it it in my top five however in Lexington/Louisville and surrounding. read more

Normally, I love this restaurant. But it really does depend on who is working. Tonight, I came in to get the Greek Salad, which I typically get once a week. I got one for my sister as well. There were younger people working than usual. First, they only gave me one salad despite my recipt and order saying two. I had fo full on remind them I had ordered two, and request they make a second. Then, I got home to discover they made the salad wrong. The cheese was wrong, the toppings were wrong, even the dressing they gave me was wrong. My sister is a picky eater and wouldn't touch the salad since the cheese wasn't one she likes. I understand that they may have been out of ingredients, but they should have told me and let me know they were substituting half of the salad ingredients for other things. Very disappointing. Felt more like the workers didn't care enough to try and get it right. read more

We picked up a couple pizzas when we were passing through on a road trip. If this is also you, find another pizza place. It wasn't a belly-bombing McMeal, though it was ready quickly, but it certainly wasn't what we expected. The 12" pepperoni had plenty of cheese, but only one pepperoni per slice plus two in the center. The Margherita was very disappointing. The crust was tough and chewy, the sauce was ok but heavy, the mozzarella was not the thick gooey fresh stuff expected (and very sparing, like the pepperoni), and the "basil" wasn't the big pieces one expects on a Margherita, but more of the tiny bits of Italian seasonings blend in a shaker. Maybe it's because we come from a region with many amazing pizza options , or the three teenagers making the pizzas this night, but this place has some work to do. read more

They have a decent gluten free pizza. I've had some good ones and some pretty bad ones at this restaurant. It seems it depends on who's making it. I learned from one of the cooks that if they cook it directly on the stone it's much better. They won't do this unless you ask though because it could cause cross contamination. I'm not celiac so this isn't a problem for me. The service is extremely slow because they have one small oven. So one of my pizzas is luke warm while the other one is hot. If they could fix that it would be a decent pizza. read more

We just got back from my daughters in Mt Sterling and she took us to try this pizza Wednesday night and I'm so glad she did! I can't say enough about just how good this pizza was! If you like the old fashioned crispy thin crust pepperoni pizza or Margherita which both were awesome I prefer pepperoni just because that's my fave but if your ever anywhere close to this place it's worth stopping you won't be sorry! Also this downtown area is worth seeing as well. As far as the restaurant it's not fancy it's a little pizza shop with indoor/outdoor seating nothing special about the place bu t the food coming my out of here is phenomenal why your there anyway right? So yes if your wanting the best pizza ever it's a must you won't be sorry! read more

It's definitely worth pulling off of the high way, driving through the scenic small town, nice old homes, typical small town square to eat. We stopped for gas right off of the highway and ordered pizza and calzone. Order was prepared quickly and by the time we were done filling up with gas, drove "downtown" it was a quick grab and go! Friendly people, plenty of seating with sidewalk seating to enjoy old downtown scenery. We drive this highway from TX to see family in WV and this will be an added stop from now on! read more

I used to absolutely adore this place. I would bring out of town friends here when they visited. Then new ownership took over. Since then quality and service have gone exponentially downhill. They're not wearing masks or really taking any precautions. The new owner never speaks to the customers here or at any of the other establishments he owns, at least one of which, he is delinquent on his taxes, and apparently won't let any of the workers here at Tomatoes and Flames keep their tips because he says he needs that money to keep his business afloat. I wish I could still recommend this place, but all things considered, I just can't. read more

Pizza was very tasty and came in decent time. Seemed a slower time 5-6 on Saturday afternoon- during a UK FOOTBALL GAME. Coke products location - just so you know. They were out of Regular Coke but that's ok. Happy people working. That's always a plus! There is no beer and one of our party said that would help and so would having the UK games on. One tv in building and it had local advertisements on it only. I agree it would increase traffic probably. Sorry no photo. We really devoured it before I even got a pic. It was that good! read more

Our department has ordered from this restaurant for events on four occasions. Every time there has been a problem with the order; they either leave part of the order off or try to overcharge when the price was determined at the time the order was given. The food is mediocre at best, and certainly not good enough to warrant the abysmal service. read more

This was a great find in this little town. We were here for Christmas time visiting family and they suggested it. We got the lunch special (6" pizza and soup or salad). Portion sizes were great and food was very well prepared. I got the potato soup - it was very good! The salads were a good size for a lunch special. I also got the "zesty" sauce but found that it really wasn't very spicy as indicated (however I really really like spicy so maybe to someone else it would be spicy?..) Overall good flavor, good portion sizes, good atmosphere and very friendly staff. One more thing; There aren't too many seats/tables, so you may have to wait a little bit to get a seat if they are busy. read more
