Update: My husband got a take out order this weekend. We were missing some of that order and were told we would be credited. We took that to mean that it would be taken off the bill since we never received the item charged. I called this evening and was told that we could order more wings at no charge. We are not planning to drive another 40 min round trip when the first order was wrong. I would just like the money put back on our card. I know that someone can make this happen, but I am told it is not possible. Unfortunate customer service fail. We really liked this place and liked to go quite often. Final update: The owner gave us a refund for the missing item after we reached out again. This was all we wanted. It should not have been this complicated, but I am glad it's over with. Get in here on a Monday or Thursdays, "Wing nights" and go nuts on the $.50 wings. This place gets packed, but it's bigger than you think and they move quickly. Just remember that everything is better with blue cheese dressing, especially grilled wings. Most recently we came here on a non-wing night and had the regular "friendly fried chicken". My wife, daughter and I have started trying a new place to eat every month and on this night my daughter and I were craving wings. We have heard good things about their wings and it happened to be wing night! BONUS!!!! We got there pretty early and it is a good thing because we got their last open table. She was awesome, she was busy and didn't have time for our indecisiveness and quickly made our decisions for us which is the assertiveness we needed or we would still be there trying to decide! I am going to struggle remembering all the flavors but I do know that there were ones that were a combination of buffalo, bbq, and jerk that were our favorites. We were in from out of town last week Sunday early evening. There were four adult women on the end chatting and we mentioned the word penis. Our prudish bartender told us nobody wanted to hear us talk that way. Seriously?!?! I can't say penis in a bar in Wisconsin ?!?! So then we paid our tab and she told us that we don't know how to handle our liquor which is pretty funny considering we had two drinks. I was not happy eating in this establishment. I was on a date and we wanted to try something new. We ordered onion rings, wedges, and wings. The Onion rings were soaked in grease to the point that it shoots out of your mouth when you bite into it. It was the same for the wedges, it was almost like biting into an oil soaked sponge. On to the chicken the grilled bbq chicken was the best but everything else was not. The garlic Parmesan wings taste like Alfredo sauce out of the jar. Now I've eaten chicken all across this great land, and the best fried chicken I've ever found came from a gas station in rural Virginia. Tomkens wasnt bad, but people need to get out more. It's standard issue fried chicken, breaded and made fresh. I'm told their wings are also very good and I'll have to give them a shot. I got several of the signature sauces to try with the chicken and they are flavorful, interesting, and diverse. I did not understand the bread-- it was literally just cold buttered bread. Fries were standard issue crinkle cut fries. All in all not bad, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. Staff was friendly and helpful. I'll have to give them another try for the wings. read more

Stopped in on a whim while out in West Allis. The menu is mostly chicken but there are a few non-chicken options, too. Of course we went there for the chicken, it's in the name after all. It was after 8 on a Saturday and the place was hopping. It was loud. The layout is half bar, half kind of diner with a large bar area, several high top tables, and then a second area with four or five low top tables closer to the kitchen. We sat at a high top. Service was good, although it was hard to hear over the music and boisterous groups. Our table was pretty dirty when we sat down, but our server quickly wiped it down for us. Beers were in the $4-5 range with a limited selection of tappers. My husband had a domestic beer and it came in either 16 or 22 ounces. I had a local micro which came in a standard pint. We ordered some wings and a fried chicken basket (4 pieces with fries). You know it's going to be good when they have paper towel rolls on the table. Since it's what they're famous for, we had the "Buffalo sings the blues" sauce with additional blue cheese as a dipper. Truly you don't need a dipper with these wings, they are so sauced. The flavor was delicious. Ours were fried. Next time we'll go with the grilled. The fried chicken basket was a lot of food! You get a breast, wing, leg, and thigh. This was hands-down some of the most moist fried chicken I've had. Super plump and delicious. Perfect amount of batter and a good flavor. This is the 4th or 5th time I have been at TomKen's and this was their poorest outing. Service was completely fine and food came out in a timely fashion, but it just didn't deliver. We started with the 'Pickle Chips' appetizer which was excellent per usual with a spicy ranch dipping sauce. They are consistently the best appetizer on the menu here. Our wings were not great for a variety of reasons. Granted it was a Monday on one of their wing days so that could be it, but the wings were not as juicy as they normally are. We got the grilled version and they were a bit burnt. The 'Buffalo Garlic' is one of the better sauces in the city but it couldn't save these poorly cooked wings. I also tried the 'Nutty Rooster' which was essentially Sriracha & Peanut Butter, but the Sriracha taste was limited. Old school neighborhood bar in West Allis. Kinda like cheers, everyone knows your name right? Lots of rewards for TomKens as they are plastered on the walls. Its decorated as you would expect your local bar to be. I stopped in during the final four with the family. We all went back and fourth with what we were gonna eat. Totally stoked to try this chicken that has been celebrated as such. Dreams were deflated when the sole waitress came along and told us a party of 7 that we couldnt get a bucket of chicken, strike 1. So we had no choice but to get the hobo chicken (Weird name huh?) which is a 4 piece basically. So we had to have 3 orders of this. It was during final four so the kitchen was backed up no problem. I also ordered so drummies (Wings) they came first.I dont like sauce to much so im like how are they cooked. They are cooked with sauce on. Im thinking that the sauce will be cooked through the food kinda like how Point East Pub does it. I was wrong. I also do not like buffalo sauce. I wanted them to be hot wings.....just hot like hot sauce. Nope all of the sauce is Buffalo. So i settled for the honey bbq. So i got the half grilled and half battered. Im like oh yea oh yea.... first bite.... oh no! The chicken was really bland and had the slightest bit of seasoning on it, strike 2. Luckily i ordered a side of onion rings, this saved the day. About 20 mins after my food came, the tables food came. A bucket of fries... I mean like kfc bucket. The chicken special came with fries so they said the hell with it give um a bucket. Good right? Nope! the fries were old school crinkle cut fries. Dry and un-salty. They sucked really bad i kid you not. I should have taken heed to the table across from us that didnt touch their fries and left them on the table and took the rest of the food they didnt eat to go. The main course this hobo chicken was no different. No salt at all. Im like what the hell is this. It was pretty juicy but with no flavor that didnt matter. The chicken come out to you in a bread basket with white cloth napkins. No issue with that it was just that my 3 of the 4 napkin baskets had orangish red sauce stains on them. Strike 3... Your out....right..? Nope there is more! Its a table of 7 and we asked for bbq sauce and we got a small sauce cup full of bbq sauce. With as unflavorful as that chicken is they should be throwing bbq sauce at you. Thats it no more strikes. I wouldnt go back for anything not because i hate it, the bar, the people, or the nostalgia that TomKens has. Its simply because there are other places serving better food. read more

We usually come for their magnificent wings and have wanted to try out the fish fry for awhile. Walking in, we were surprised that there wasn't a wait. This is a small corner bar and were expecting it to be as crowded as a wing night. Received our soup (which was absolutely one of the best I've ever had) soon after ordering but the the fish and shrimp took almost a full hour. After watching take out order after take order leave the kitchen I finally asked if our order been lost. So disappointing. :( Don't know if the 2 guys in the kitchen were overwhelmed or if there was something else going on as the waitress and the bartender were back there trying to figure out their orders quite a bit. I'm being generous with a 3. I'd heard about how great the wings are, so I stopped in last night. It's your basic dive bar with televisions that were showing both the Brewers game and NBA championship. So far so good. When I looked at the menu, the names of some of the sauces were not descriptive, so I asked one server, who was obviously annoyed that she had to describe them. Strike 1. I settled on two different sauces and a fair while later they were, literally, slung in front of me. I couldn't tell which was which and the slinger was gone before I could ask. Strike 2. By the time I got about halfway through, I needed more water. No sign of any servers. No one asked me how they were. I finished my meal without any servers. Strike 3. As the Brewers went up by 6 runs, all TVs were switched to the NBA Championship. I kind of raised my hands in a "WTF" gesture to no one in particular; the bartender noticed and glaringly said something about "11-2" not being good enough for me. I'll call this one a foul tip. Finally, my wing bones were removed and a bill was given to me. The pen wouldn't work, and after a few minutes, I found a server and told them that the pen wasn't working. She put her order pad down and placed the bill on top of it. I said that the pen wasn't working. She takes the pen and scribbles for about 10 seconds and the ink finally started to flow. Her unpleasantness was so palpable that I decided this game was over and added it to the "L" column. read more

We went into state fair, came back out around 630 to go get some of the best wings in the land and the kitchen wasn't open, therefore no wings. Huge letdown. What looks like a dumpy Wisconsin bar, across the street from a, wait for it, race track - is actually a dumpy Wisconsin bar across from a race track with world class chicken wings! Okay, so when you walk in, nothing will stand out to you. A Brewers game plays in the background while old timers drink Old Fashions and distract the servers from getting to you. It's hard to not be the regular. But.... I think they double deep fry their wings! The key to a great chicken wing is to fry it twice. Once at a low temperature to cook the meat and again after it has been chilled or frozen and right before its rolled in sauce to crisp the outside. Tender and juicy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. That crust also creates sauce adhesion - which is critical if you wanna have good wing game. TomKens doesn't boast. There are no signs or campaigns trying to convince you of how good their wings are; but anyone who has stumbled into this place walks out having to admit that TomKens is a serious contender for the best chicken wings in the city - maybe even the state. It's crazy that they haven't broken into the national stage for their wings. Except then you have to talk about their service. They're not fast. And they're not sorry they're not fast. If you're in a hurry, go to Buffalo Wild Wings. TomKens servers and wing-slingers are in the business of art, not expedience. So bring a friend by all means - but plan for a longer lunch. This was my second time at TomKen's. After hearing so many good things about the wings we had to try it the first time and the first experience was very positive-the wings were awesome. Fast forward a couple months after I have been talking this place up to my friends saying "you guys have to try tomkens" I head here with a buddy of mine. We ordered a variety of different flavors and to be honest the wings we not nearly as good as the first time. This time they were over breaded making them very soggy. I would love to give this place another try based off my first experience but I think I'll spend my money elsewhere next time. Simply one of the best fried chicken dinners in the Milwaukee area: crispy, flavorful and never greasy. My favorite is the six piece thigh dinner. If you stop by for chicken on a Friday make sure to swop out the fries for their amazing potato pancakes. You will be glad you did.
