Some trivia about Tommaso's. The office next door called "Genovese Title." (sign still there on Google maps, not sure if there today).......well, that was the hangout that Paul Castellano established for his gang of Brooklyn Mafia Killers. See the book. "Murder Machine" by Jerry Capeci, page 139. Paul, who was murdered in 1985 outside Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan, had Nino Gaggi, his capo, open up this club next to Tommaso's way back in the 70s. I find it interesting that the "Genovese Title" sign is still there on Google Maps after all these years. That was a bad place for bad people who killed and murdered a lot.......Next time you are at Tommaso's....take a look...."Genovese Title"......next door. read more

I just left and I have to say I had an excellent time. When you walk in you feel like your waking into someone's home. They had someone singing and he was great. The atmosphere was nice. But the food... the food is what makes this place fantastic. I had the lamb and it was made perfectly. They have a 3 course meal selection for $28 and its truly worth it. You get to try more food which is a plus. I really like this place and I will be more then happy to return and to recommend. read more

My wife and I hosted a small wedding party for family and friends. Almost 30 guests, including 6 children. We could not be happier with the way our celebration went. The restaurant provided courteous, professional, service and the food was as good as it gets. The appetizers were especially phenomenal...all of them !! The piano man and his wonderful singer added magic. I am so happy we used Tomasso's and every guest has echoed these sentiments. I cannot even begin to tell you have bad our experience was. We made a reservation for X'Mas eve. When we arrived my daughter (adult ) walked in first, followed by my wife and mother. I was still outside valeting the car. We drove 2 hours , as we wanted to see the famed lights on 84th st. I had been to this restaurant many times, mostly in the 70's, but once less than 5 years ago. It was always great... Great food, and service.. Well not this time.. But it was actually the worst experience we ever had in a restaurant anywhere, and I mean anywhere.... The overweight owner, who's picture is on the website... was very rude, insulting, and sarcastic to my daughter.. Then a waiter shuffles us to the far back room where we felt like we were herded into a tight spot amongst many tables so close together, and every table had young children screaming loud.. Thought we were in a Chuckie Cheese.. NOTE: the 1st 2 dining rooms we passed thru had only adults..So I suspect we were put in the little kids section. Next.. The table cloth was stained(newly stained).. I asked the waiter to change it, and after a very nasty look, he abruptly changed it. Next.... I went back to the front and asked the same rude overweight owner, to change my table.. He rudely and loudly said no, and then said, if you don't like it , you can leave... Next... I went back to the table and told my family we were leaving.... NOTE: My mother is 84 years old, and it's not easy for her to maneuver, but they agreed and we started the trek back thru 3 dining rooms to leave. Next.... As my daughter passed the rude overweight owner, he sarcastically said , " are you happy now" Being it was X'Mas Eve, and we are a Christian family, she bit her tongue and did not respond to him.. In summary... DO NOT EVEN GO NEAR THIS PLACE.... Even if it is a slow night, and the food is great.... The character of the business is the worst I have ever experienced... read more

Charming, cozy and family-owned spot in a busy part of San Francisco. We stopped in here after the Lunar New Year parade on Saturday. There was a 30 minute wait, but they took our number through an app and sent us a text when the table was ready. We were able to walk over to City Lights Bookstore and browse, so the wait was no big deal. It was busy in the restaurant, but they took orders quickly, brought out bread early and were so good with refilling the water glasses. The carpaccio was delish (I want more now), and the pasta with clams in white sauce was simple, fresh and solid. My 4 year old had pizza (a delicious win) and fell in love (gave her a big ol' hug) with the hostess, whose mom was our waitress and the owner of the place. We left saying it was one of the most fun and enjoyable dining experiences we've had since moving to SF a year ago. Thank you! read more

I think it was food writer Alan Richman who called Tommaso's the finest Italian restaurant in America. Pronouncements like these are tantamount to dropping the gauntlet on those with favorites of their own. Nonetheless, you will be hard pressed not to have a great dinner here. On 2 of the five occasions that we ate at Tommaso's, figuritively in the shadow of the Verranzano Narrows bridge, there was a line of black sedans with greyed out windows double parked with impunity on the side street. It was, we later learned one of John Gotti's favorite restaurants. I don't think we saw him on those occasions as making longer than cursory eye contact with the goodfellas seated at the large round table commanding the room at end of the row of smaller tables was not something that I thought I should do. Discretion and all that. The menu features expected southern Italian specialties with the ones i tried outstanding. The chicken with vinegar peppers so simple and so delicious and so not harsh as with so many vinegar dishes that I don't think I wanted to know how much butter went into taking off the edges, but a marvelous dish. There are enough seldom seen and scrumptious entries on the menu to make it interesting for many many visits. Duck with white beans, pappardelle with rabbit, braised veal cheeks. wonderful place. Don't know if John Gotti's visits shaped up the service but its right on the money. No agita here and its a must stop whenever we have to travel to JFK. read more

Went with a large group on Thursdays for my first visit ever. I was impressed in every way. The food was very good. The portions were big. The service was good. The hot appetizers were delicious and abundant. The roasted peppers and fresh mozzarella were the best I've ever had. Even though I am not a big mussel eater I was shocked by the size. The fried calamari were a little small. It delicious. The penne pasta in vodka sauce was perfect. An excellent experience. read more

Wow so disappointed. I've been here a bunch of times in the past but what happened today should never happen. Stopped in with my wife at 1pm in a Sunday for a couple drinks and a bite. Walked in and sat at the bar when a guy also at the bar-- not behind the bar or wearing server clothes --asked what we were doing. I said grabbing lunch. Exact response: "No you're not. This is a private party." Mind you, no one else was at the bar or dining area. No sign on the door. We were pleasant and left. And will never be coming back. Option 1: the guy was just some jerk who didn't work there. But no one who did work there stopped him from acting that way. Option 2: he did work there. Either way horrible treatment. The owner greets everyone at some point during the evening. The food is always great as is the service. There are opera singers at times and a piano player. What I love is the fact that this is a neighborhood place with a small town feel. When you walk in almost everyone smiles or greets you. Anybody who gives this place even a half a star has not a clue as to what food should taste like. This is the worst Italian restaurant in New York City. The owner needs to either go back to school to learn how to cook or hire a classic chef. The meatballs tasted like dog meat and the fish salad appetizer was at least a week old. There was never a steady flow of new customers coming in only the stale looking same people that probably eat there over and over again It was a Saturday night and the tables never filled up as people left. I have been there previously only for parties,didn't care much for it but wouldn't complain because a I wasn't in paying and be it wouldn't make any point if I wasn't going to go back there again. Since I had no choice and I was paying this time, I realized that this was the most overpriced horrific food anyone could ever eat and if you truly do like this restaurant, I won't blame the owner, I blame you people for going back time and time again. This place should be shut down. There wasn't one meal served to my group that had any sense of culinary design or flavor. Tommaso's is unique because of Tommaso himself. He selects the menu, goes to ITaly to get the wine and accompanies your meal himself as he sings arias. This is our go-to Italian, even if it means that someone has to abstain from wine because it's in Brooklyn. The food is amazing, with offerings found nowhere else in New York, and if it's not on the menu and you ask for it, they'll make it for you. The service is attentive and fast but not rushed. The prix fixe menu is an amazing and delicious value but they'll mix and match to make you the meal of your dreams. They make a mean negroni, so you know it's first rate. My only criticism: it's in Dyker Heights and not my neighborhood. read more

I went to this restaurant this past evening as part of a group. This weekend and next they do something they call Carnevale, on weekends the price is $60 pp. Carnevale features set dishes, five entrees, three choices of pasta preceding, a hot and a cold antipast, and a dessert selection again of five items with American coffee or tea only. The food portions were small, and while good, I got the sense afterwards that these were made with food they were trying to get rid of. All courses. No side dish was offered save for a small plate of wedged roasted potatoes, one wedge per person, meaning eaten in two bites. Dessert likewise was small and the cheesecake repeated on me from the moment we left until this morning. With two bottles of wine and a few cappuccinos and an espresso that were additional charges and tip the evening became a $90 pp evening. Far too much for what we were given, and far too much for having to choose off of a set collection of dishes all of which were clearly made before our arrival. The opera show which consisted of approximately four or five songs was a very nice addition, and the atmosphere was very convivial. The waiter service while attentive was also disappointing in that the food was served too quickly, and the waiter knew nothing about the dishes being served, I mean these were set dishes, not the full menu, he should know what each item has in it. Overall, this Carnevale thing was a disappointment and I feel like the amount we spent we were screwed. I hope when a patron is allowed to order from the full menu or the $30 prix fixe menu which is the normally available choices when Carnevale isn't happening, that the experience is better. read more

Really great spot to have a nice italian dinner after seeing the Christmas lights in the area. When we arrived a lady was just finishing singing some holiday tunes while another person played the piano. They give you a delicious basket of bread and crackers when you sit down. My girlfriend and I both went with the three courses for $25. It was really a great deal for the amount of food we received. My girlfriend had the stuffed mushrooms as an app and veal rolls as an entree. Both were really good. She got 4 stuffed mushrooms and 4 veal rolls. The veal had bacon rolled around it and had a such a rich, smokey bacon flavor. I had the mussels in red sauce for an app and chicken parm for an entree. My app probably had close to 20 mussels and the chicken parm was the size of the plate. It also came with a side of potatoes. The meal was well worth the $50. They had a bottle of red for $35 which we got since it was the only bottle under like $70, but it was very good. Service was great and our glasses never stayed empty. i really enjoyed my meal here. read more

Growing up in Brooklyn this was one of my favorite restaurants. For me it was very special because the food was always good and I really enjoyed the owner and his partner singing Italian songs. Because I moved to NJ 25 years ago I haven't had an opportunity to return. However yesterday we had visited people in Brooklyn and we decided to have dinner here. We were very disappointed with our experience. The place wasn't nearly as crowded as it used to be and they sat us right next to the piano and singer. The singer was actually very good, but I felt we were too close. The food was ok not great. I ordered the shrimp over linguine with red sauce. The pasta was fresh and the sauce was good. My wife had the salmon which wasn't cooked to her liking. My daughter ordered the chicken parmigiana which surprisingly didn't taste good at all. The chicken had a strange taste. The pasta fagioli was as good as it used to be and the desserts were good. But the most disappointing part of our experience was the service. It was probably the worst service I've received at a restaurant in a long time. The waiter barely checked on us and I actually had to get up to find him to pay the bill. Overall it was very disappointing as I remember how good this restaurant used to be. read more

Food and service is delicious, but the owner has such a nasty attitude. We tried to book a holiday party on a Saturday evening and had three children, and what a response we got from him. "Children on Saturday evening????" We responded yes, they are part of the family. This guy looked at us like we were from Mars! He said, oh they should stay home. I guess he doesn't know anything about having children . He didn't even help us figure out the price per person, we had to do it ourselves. Needless to say, we decided not to give him our business. Last week I celebrated my daughter's !st Communion with a lunch at Tommaso's. I had about 35 guests and everyone raved about the food and the service. I had previously had another party here about 4 years ago and was so glad the quality was the same excellent level. The food (we had pasta, veal marsala, chicken and salmon) was delicious. The service was excellent even though there were tow other parties and other guests there at the same time. We were there for more than 4 hours with Mr. Tommaso saying we could stay as long as we wanted to. I would give Tommaso's more than 5 stars if I could. Really perfect!! read more

I have eaten here several times over the past 30 plus years and must say, the food, decor and entertainment has not changed a bit. My wife and I took another couple here over the weekend and we all ordered the $28 three course prix fixe. Having not been there for a few years, I had forgotten how satisfactory the portions were, and was almost reluctant to take a chance of leaving hungry. After placing our orders, a huge basket of bread (Brooklyn bread of course) came to the table accompanied by a bowl of fresh basil pesto as well as a complimentary rice ball and foccacia platter. For the first of our 3 courses, we each ordered a different appetizer to share. A heaping dish of fried zucchini, a small but delicious portion of mozzarella in carozza, a huge stuffed artichoke and something else that escapes my memory. I could have left very satisfied at this point, but the entree was on its' way. I had decent sized mozzarella and prociutto stuffed pork chop of which I was only able to eat 3/4. With barely enough room for dessert, I ordered the rice pudding which had a strange orangey flavor I have never tasted before, and a stolen sliver of my wifes' Italian cheesecake which was a bit dry. This was hardly a deal breaker though. For about 10 minutes during our meal, owner Tom regaled the small crowd with his operatic vocal stylings by belting out around 3 songs. BTW, I requested Nessun Dorma which was met with a scowl and non response. So requests are apparently not welcomed as Tom can be tempermental. Overall, the night was a success with our guests, and reminded me why I will continue to return here in the future. read more

last week after a grueling ride on the belt parkway from long island we decided to stop at tommaso. previous visits have always been good. however, we decided to try the $30 each special just for kicks. well, surprise, surprise ! i ordered a stuffed pork chop. i received something that looked like a burnt egg, hard as hell. when broken open i found pieces of pork and cheese. my wife ordered chicken scaparalla and she received small chunks of mostly bone with hardly any chicken. the worst. do not order the $30 special. shame on us. other compliments, veg., etc., not bad. not the tommaso's i knew. service was shameful. the waiter--no smile, no welcome, no hi and no sense of humor. the only greeting we received was at the door from a nice guy at the bar, laughing that we tried to come in wrong way. he was great we laughed. so my dear friends my advice is NEVER order the $30 special. they should eliminate the stupid idea. they could arrange a different lunch menu but don't fool around with a main meal. will we go back,,,,,not sure. it broke my heart for this crap to happen after all the good times we have had in the restaurant. the 2 stars are for the gentlemen at the bar. read more
