Dropped my car off ('07 550i) the night before for total front bulb replacements- due to complexity of job, i wanted all bulbs changed at the same time. While there, i wanted an oil change too. I had an 11am appointment scheduled. They kept my car "all day"and after not hearing from the shop at ~3pm, I called the shop for an update? I was then told at 3pm that my car was "next to be pulled in" (I had an 11am appointment), so to hear that my car was next at "3pm" was a little concerning.....fast forward to 5pm/closing time and I get to the shop to settle up. I pay nearly $800 for bulbs to replaced along with the oil change.....jump in my car to leave and low and behold, the right lamp fault is still there on the dash (why i brought the car in the first place). This is when they tell me as they are closing that the fault wont clear because i need new headlight assemblies for the car?? No one called to give me an update along the way and I get the "we just took your car down off the lift along with we are short a technician" today....excuse. I expressed my dissatisfaction...have brought my car in for service on multiple times...time before being a ~$5k job worth of work. Very discouraging to fork over nearly $800 for bulbs and oil change and get a rushed job at closing and excuses. Don't mind paying for quality work but don't insult a customer's intelligence with guesswork and no communication. Also, was given an "updated" receipt of service after the tech went back an added in the comments why the fault light wouldn't clear and the need for new headlight assemblies. They are expensive, numerous times I bring my vehicles (plural) in for service and they give you one price and then find other issues which they charge even more. Other comments have already stated this. On 2 occasion, they broke things and either denied it and tried to cover it up or didn't say anything. On 2 occasions they misdiagnosed the problem, one time charged for items that didn't need replacing, they said they had to charge me because they did the work and only charged me for the correct part but didn't charge me labor I wouldn't trust them for any work even an oil change or air filter replacement. read more

Had new front struts done back in March. Two days ago, while making a right turn- my SUV was lop-sided. I had to pull over and luckily the level evened out once I turned the wheel. I went to the shop today to have them look at it- the lady at the front desk said they couldn't look at it and proceeded to tell " we only do diagnostics on Wednesdays and Thursdays." I asked for alternative days, and she was unwilling to accommodate me. If you are looking for dependable, reliable, and good customer service- Stay away from this repair shop! read more

Classic Bait & Switch. Spoke to Marcy on 12/29, Tommy Mathewes called me back same day and quoted me $1300 to install a high pressure fuel pump, water pump, and thermostat for a 2011 BMW 335i. Was advised to bring the vehicle so they can order the parts and repair the car by 12/30. Was then advised by Randy that the parts wouldn't be avail until 1/3 which is understandable because of New Years. Randy asks if Tommy went over the quote, I advised him yes.. around $1300 for everything installed. Long story short i pickup the car, they charged me $1300 to install 2 of the 3 parts because their diagnostic lead them to believe I didn't need it. Was also advised I needed a $380 battery including installation, which is fine. Long story short ended up paying $2200 for what was suppose to be a $1680 charge. After reading the good reviews on this shop I decided to take my 330i in for an oil change and to get some other issues looked at. While they may do good work (I only ended up having my oil changed), thier pricing is OUTRAGEOUS! The oil change was $120 which is about the same as the dealer but they charged me another $160 in "labor " to look at issues that I had already told them about...it took them this long to determine I was right but did not involve actually fixing anything or even removing anything to determine the issues, I paid this for them to literally look at it. I paid the bill, swallowed my discontent and walked out. Ok, so you might think " that's what a shop charges, that's normal.". I'm afraid this was overcharging at its best...they bled me for every penny. I will give you an idea of what they quoted me on other parts so you can see how outrageous they are. $95 for wiperblades (charging me 1/2 of labor??). $995 for control arm (was quoted $340 by another, more capable bmw shop, OEM parts), $595 for transmission flush/filters (again, quoted $300 by another shop), $300 for sparkplug replacement (did this myself in 1 hr for $50), and the list goes on...they wanted close to 300% MORE than other places. I'm not sure they didn't want my business, maybe I'm the only one this has happened to, but as a car enthusiast and a military member on a limited budget, I DO NOT AND CAN NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE!! read more

I had just purchased my '09 BMW 128i and noticed a very unusual problem, namely the windshield washer fluid would not dispense despite the fluid pump running when I pulled the lever. After scanning the reviews of auto shops in the area, I decided to go with Mathewes Auto Repair. They took me in, dropped me off at my lodging, and took my car in to investigate the problem. After a few hours, I got the word that a fungus had grown on the filter leading from the washer fluid pump to the dispensing tubes. Talk about an unusual diagnosis! (I found out later that this is not uncommon for BMWs, requiring the addition of alcohol to the washer fluid to prevent this growth. So, it looks like I'm heading to the liquor store!) But, the guys at Mathewes solved this mystery and did a full inspection just in time for me to get on the road to Illinois! These guys are customer focused and experts, especially for European and imports. I'm glad I took my car to these guys! read more

I've been told that they charge a little more than other places, but I'd rather pay "a little more" for piece of mind that we are getting quality without substition. I had been to a few places before discovering Tommy Mathewes and was never satisfied with the "add ons" that those other shops were charging once my vehicle was in their possession. Completely untrustworthy. Spent roughly $1500 in repairs and arrive to find my windshield cracked. The owner and the technicians working all claimed that it was pre-existing(which I did not remember). At the time I chose to take their word for it. Two weeks later my driver's side windshield wiper arm breaks free. I take apart my wipers to find impact damage on my windshield hidden by the plastic covering the wiper arms. Furthermore, in their attempt to assess this apparent damage(which appears to have been caused by a dropped tool) they lost the nut to my driver's side wiper arm and replaced it with a nut THAT DID NOT FIT. Long story short, this ruined my wiper transmission, wiper arm and windshield. They absolutely lied to my face about causing the damage to my car and then made it worse in the attempt to cover it up. This is going to be pretty in depth, but I'd stay clear and will be telling all my friends and associates to do the same. CLASSIC BAIT & SWITCH So I called Tommy Mathewes Auto Repair on Thursday 12/29 at 10:21AM and spoke to Marcy. I asked her if she could quote me the repair cost(s) for a high pressure fuel pump, water pump, and also thermostat for a 2011 BMW 335i. She advised me she would call me back with a quote. Surprisingly I received a prompt callback around 1:47 PM from Mr. Mathewes.. He advised me it would be around $1300 for the repair(s) then began asking me a couple of questions regarding why I believed I needed the said parts. I advised him Taylor BMW has advised me about a year ago my fuel pump was on it's way out, and i know for a fact I need a fuel pump, and the water pump & thermostat is needed because my car overheated and went into limp mode and would take forever to get to normal operating temps beforehand. I then asked him if he could give me a breakdown for each part (because i was shopping around of course). He advised me he couldn't because he lumped them all together. I said that's cool considering I'm positive I need the fuel pump and I should do the water pump with the thermostat anyway. He asked if I could the car off so he could order the parts and get the car back to me by Friday 12/30. He advised me he would call me if anything changed. At this point I was excited only one day of down time with no vehicle, sounds great! I promptly drop off the car. I then get a call from Randy @ 1:49PM 12/30, he tells me that he wouldn't be able to receive the parts until 1/3 and asks me if Tommy went over the pricing (quote) with me. I told him he did, and he quoted me around $1300 for everything. So at this point I'm honestly not surprised, didn't think they could fix everything within a day, and I'm pretty understanding.. I understand they're not getting any parts because of New Years day. So January 3rd rolls by, no word from the shop. So I'm thinking nothing has changed, and just continue to wait. January 4th comes around and he calls @ 8:31am and let's me know they're working on the car and will let me know if anything changes, he later lets me know I need a battery and that would be an additional $380 over the initial $1300 quote. January 5th comes and Randy calls @ 10:26AM letting me know my vehicle was ready for pickup. I go to pickup my vehicle, and while he is printing everything for the invoice I notices he isn't mentioning anything regarding the High Pressure Fuel Pump being changed. So I specifically ask him the $1680 ($380 for the battery) is including everything being changed right? (fuel pump, water pump, thermostat, battery) He says after some diagnostics the fuel pump wasn't needed. I said ok, then why am I still paying $1300 for the installation of just the water pump and thermostat? He attempts to tell me that Tommy advised him that the quote was just for the water pump and thermostat, and when he followed up with me on 12/30 the amount he quoted me was also just $1300 for the water pump and thermostat. At this point I'm livid, I tell him at no point in time during the conversation with me and him (Randy) did he specifically state the $1300 was for just the water pump and thermostat. During our conversation he asked me if Tommy went over the quote with me.. I told him yes $1300 for everything installed, and that was the end of our conversation. So I repeatedly ask what is he going to do to rectify the situation. He tells me there is nothing he can do, other than me paying an additional $700-900 for them to install the fuel pump. I tell him that's unacceptable. He has one of two choices, he can either A. Install all my original parts B. He can install the fuel pump since that is what I was originally quoted. He continued to refuse to install the parts so I advised him I would dispute the charge w/ my credit card provider. He then stated he would call the cops if I left with my vehicle without paying. I advised him I'm more than willing to go ahead and call Columbia County for him, as the job I paid for wasn't completed and he is refusing to complete the transaction we discussed. I tell him it would make no sense for me to pay them $750/ea to install just the thermostat and fuel pump when I was quoted $480 OTW at Bavarian autoworks for the Thermostat alone. He attempts to tell me if I was quoted that it was a mistake. I then place the phone on speaker and called Bavarian autoworks and the gentleman on the phone confirms they can install the thermostat for $480 out the door (not to mention I heard they offer a military discount!), but would need the car to quote me a price on the fuel pump. Took my 2005 Mini in for a new clutch. After the car sat there for a couple weeks before even being cracked open, I finally get the car back for $1000 more than the estimate received. When I picked the car up, I was informed that the right front control arm needed replacing and that there was rattling and shaking, which was not present when I dropped the car off. I took the car to another shop to get the control arm done. While at the second shop, I was informed that the cv axle needed replacing. This was completely out of the blue and definitely something the mecjanic at Tommy Mathewes should have noticed. Oh, and only the control arm ball joints needed replacement, not the bushing or arm itself. But now that it was all replaced, the shaking is even worse, and the car is incapable of going over 60 mph, and constantly being dropped out of 5th gear sending the engine to redline. Recommendation for Mini owners, do your homework, take your Mini somewhere else for repairs, somewhere where quality control and a quality job is priority, not being the only shop in town so they will charge whatever they want for crap quality work. End result, I cannot even drive the car safely because I don't know what they broke. read more
