Normally, this is a place I would avoid. Location, isn't great, only 3-4 picnic tables inside, and crowded walls, but the food.... I ordered the Sweet Charlotte. It's a burger topped with sautéed mushrooms, avocado, and Swiss cheese. This was hands down the best burger I've had in Anchorage. The patty was thick and juicy and cooked to perfection. It was so good that I dreamt about this burger in my sleep and went back the next day to get another one. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!! read more

This is a true hole in the wall burger place with absolutely the best burgers in Anchorage! It is a bit pricey but the food is very high quality and super delicious. My wife is not normally a big burger fan and she loved hers. The portions were fine and we were pretty much stuffed by the time we left. The staff is very friendly, willing to be flexible and worked hard to handle a high demand as fast as possible. Our food was hot when it came out and the drinks icy cold. BTW their carrot cake is to die for. We have eaten carrot cake in many states and countries and scores of restaurants and have never found any this good. -- The Gang Goes to Tommy's -- Well, this is a pretty shady part of town. But there's a lot of people around, so we should be fine. It's dark, too... Whatever, I'm not scared of the dark. We turned the corner on Spenard right before Benson and pulled into the parking lot where Maps said Tommy's was. I was anticipating the place to be jam packed, considering the place was notorious for being barely standing room only... Yet it was empty except for two people sitting at tables. So far, so good. Considering we didn't get stabbed or shot in the parking lot, I would consider this visit a success even at this early stage. At least we weren't going to eat at Valley of the Moon Park. We went in, grabbed some menus, and checked out what Tommy's had to offer. There were plenty of choices, but it didn't take long for me to decided on the holy grail of burgers: The PAPA D. Yep, that's right, I wanted the D. Here's the thing: the Papa D had onions and tomatoes on it, and I don't like either. But I decided to broaden my horizons. And boy, was it worth it. The burger was the epitome of excellence; a life-changing and genre defining experience, worthy of recognition in the Annals of Burgerdom in the eons to come... If humanity survives long enough to send the Annals of Burgerdom in a space craft to the far reaches of the galaxy, the civilization who finds it will be better off than they were before. The atmosphere of a small burger joint was as expected, other than the small random pupper that came in and started being best buds with everyone. Not much room, but it was cozy and enjoyable. After further review, the ruling on the field is that Tommy's Burger Stop is extravagantly glorious, and a return trip is in the works as we speak. Let me start off by saying, I am not a fan of burgers. I just don't do burgers. There has not been one place that I have found that has made quality burgers. However Tommy's Burger Stop is perfection. Pure perfection. Thanks to friends and other Yelpers, my expectations were really high. Tommy's honestly even exceeded that! Based on the location within town, and the look of the shop (inside and out), you wouldn't think much of it. But the quality of love they mash into their burgers is well, well worth what is going on surrounding you. Certainly made me less upset with their odd, uncomfortable, small, seating arrangement. But forget the surrounding area, let's talk about this burger. If you have read other reviews you'd know my love for jalapeno poppers is quite strong. The original plan was to try their Spenard Bacon Cheeseburger. After all, I am pretty basic, right? To my surprise, their special for the day was a 'Big Poppa.' Now what is a 'Big Poppa?' For all those jalapeno popper lovers out there, picture a perfectly seasoned burger, with jalapenos, green chile, cream cheese and bacon. Essentially a giant jalapeno popper, in burger form. I ate every last bite and did not even look back. There was no time to take a photo before, or even during me indulging in this burger. I didn't care that I probably had juices running down my hands, despite the checkered wrapper holding this biggin' together. I didn't care that my mouth started to sting from the jalapenos and green chile. I didn't even care that I was going to get a stomach ache from this burger, besides the grease of this burger but the size of it as well. I didn't care about anything in those mere 20 minutes of savoring every single bite of this burger. And now, nothing will ever compare. I repeat, nothing will ever compare. Oh Tommy's, you have the burger that I have craved for years since moving to LA, sadly I found it in Anchorage, 2300 miles away. And you know what; it's exactly what I would expect for a place with great burgers. The inside it's ridiculously small, barely big enough the hold the 4 person line I was in. There is seating outside, which struck me as a little strange since I'm guessing it isn't used half the year. This place isn't about ambiance, it's about burgers. It is a tasty, tasty burger. There are a number of options on the menu, but I went with the straight up cheeseburger. The meat was juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. It came with grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and pickles - no Russian dressing, just room for ketchup and mustard (which I prefer). The fries were thin, crispy and great, on par with the McDonald's Fries of yore, though not nearly as salty. Some negatives, they don't supply drink tops that I saw, so the drink aren't really to go. Plus, it is on the expensive side, my burger, fries and drink came in just under $11. Personally I think it's worth it, but if this place was in LA and had to compete with In-n-Out, I'm not sure it would do so well. Now I will admit that I haven't been to Comme Ca or Umani Burger, or 8 OR Father's Office. But I'm guessing that this place would stand with in many people's eyes. Seriously, I visited Anchorage for a week, and sure the salmon and crab legs are great, but I'd list this as a "Can't miss". read more

Best burger in town. Unless you like super greasy burgers that torpedo through you, then Arctic Roadrunner is your choice. IF however you appreciate moist, perfectly cooked burgers that are not greasy, served on fresh buns with crisp lettuce and the perfect amount of condiments, then Tommy's is the only place you need to check out. The best burgers I've had in anchorage hands down. I haven't it made it past the bacon cheeseburger yet, because it so good I would like I was cheating if I had something else. This isn't just a bacon cheeseburger... It's two amazing cheeses and not some cheap American cheese. We are talking cheddar and some white cheesey goodness. The fries are awesome too. I'm almost certain they use either a Tony chaciere's or slap your mama seasoning.... a must for any true Cajun. The onion rings are ok. I have lived in Alaska all 37 years of my life and have driven by this place sooooo many times it's ridiculous because I thought it was a absolute dive and quickly lumped it into the same grotesque category I would place such atrocities as Burger Cache and Max's Beefy Burgers . I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG!!! This place probably has the BEST burger I have ever eaten to this date!!...EVER!! The place is small and there is absolutely no seating, but let me tell you the service is friendly and the food is absolutely spot on!!! I don't mind the stranger sitting all up in my personal space when I am stuffing my face full of such awesome grub! I can't wait to go back this summer when they open the back patio!! So, if you are passing this place up based on the outside appearance alone....Please do yourself, and your stomach a favor and pull over and give it a shot!!! Great place and a great burger and fries. I had a cheeseburger and fries. Nice juicy burger and perfectly seasoned fries. Small place inside. Only 4 tables so you may have to wait to sit or be prepared to take out. There is some outside seating which would be great in the summer. My favorite burger joint in Anchorage is this funky little establishment in the Midtown-Spenard neighborhood. Local color rather than downtown tourists and chains. Large menu with a creative variety of interesting, tasty burgers that taste homemade! A variety of other good hot sandwiches, too. Good seasoned fries. Milkshakes good, but I found them better midweek than on the weekend. Small, with very few tables inside. Outside tables in summer. Not good for large groups that want to eat there. Best for pickup to take home. Good for kids if you can get a table inside, and even better, outside. Plenty of parking. Service can be slow, but it isn't fast food sitting under hot lights so the wait is worth it. If there were more tables and the service was just a little faster, I'd give it five stars. read more

It's a small space, so if you're planning to eat there you may be in for a wait, but it's completely worth it. Though I have to say, they can be a bit hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for..."Tommy's" is painted in flames on the sign, and honestly for years I thought it said 'tamales'. Tommy's has the best burgers in town. Their ground beef is fresh from Teddy's Tasty Meats. Fries are delish with Tommy's special cajun seasoning. Good thick bacon, peppery homemade blue cheese, and the most spectacular grilled onions and jalepenos are waiting to adorn the burger of your choosing. Everything made to order - so hey, it takes time! Order ahead on the phone if you only have an hour lunchbreak, especially if you want lunch during the rush. Angie is happy to accomodate if she can. Sometimes there's no seat left in the house - double up with another customer or get your food to go. We're all friends at Tommy's! Don't be scared off by the Cash Alaska Pawn parking signs - that is a thoroughfare and they're not allowed to claim that parking as their own! Be aware that Tommy's changes their hours of operation often; it just keeps us all on our toes and craving to come back for their RLE Hello! If if weren't for the food, Tommy's would be easily forgettable for me. The place is not much bigger than a telephone booth and it took a bit longer to get my food than I would have liked. But I tell you, when it comes to burgers, these guys know what they are doing and they do it well. I had an aloha burger and onion rings, which gave me some sticker shock when I paid for it, but when I bit down into it, it was worth it and more. The quality of the bun is really underrated with a lot of burger places, but Tommy's pays good attention to that aspect. The large amount of toppings on the burger meld wonderfully and no single flavor really overpowered the others, like everything was in perfect juicy harmony. The onion rings were crispy and delicious too, some of the best I've ever had. So to sum it up. It's a hole in the wall dive, but the burgers make up for it. read more

A couple of week ago, I decided to try this burger joint to see what all the yelping was about. It certainly is small and out of the way but isn't a deal breaker. There was 2 of us and we ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger, ($8.75) and a Stella Bleu Burger, ($12). We were told that the burgers didn't come with fries so we placed our order for 1 fry, ($2) and 1 onion ring, ($2.50). I certainly was anticipating a real treat after reading all the positive reviews, however, what we received was well below substandard. First the buns were not fresh as they just crumbled in your hands; leaving you a pile of goo. The meat in both burgers had a weird taste so the burgers were not eaten. The fries were so salty they were inedible and the onion rings were so burnt I just left them. I have been to many burger joints in my lifetime and my experience has been when you get a burger and fries/onion rings for this price point you most generally get your money's worth; not so at Tommy's Burger Stop. I don't know if it was the day the regular cook wasn't there or what was the kitchens problem but I would have done better at Burger King. Oh another thing: One of us got sick and started throwing up about 2 hours after eating there. At Tommy's Burger Stop you get way more than just a dive! You're rewarded with high prices, inedible food, and you can end up sick! WOW! What a deal! I am yelping but not in a good way. Avoid this place. Either they get their act together or shut down. I wish Yelp would allow no stars as these guys deserve minus 5 Stars for sure. read more

Damn tasty burger and the onion rings were some of the best I have ever had. The fries were good but they do come pre-seasoned before they arrive at your table or "to go" bag so be prepared for pepper. It seems like they do a good amount of business over the phone from call in orders. When we where there during what I would think was a non-peak time, the phone was ringing off the hook with order after order. I think that's the way to go actually because seating is limited during the colder months when the outdoor seating is not an option.
