I was so excited to try Tent City's gluten-free fried halibut and french fries. The place was packed around lunchtime, so we took that as a good sign and ordered our food to-go. We started eating within 2-3 minutes of walking out the door, but it was practically inedible.The fish and fries were incredibly laden with oil; just heavy, greasy, and completely unseasoned. Ratio of breading to fish was 50/50, so you get a little gipped on the actual fish. Everything desperately needed salt at minimum. To make matters worse, they send it with their berry tartar sauce, which is an absolute crime in all 50 states. We specifically requested regular tartar sauce and were given plain mayonnaise instead. None of our other requested condiments, like ketchup, were supplied either. Service for the limited time I interacted with her, was average. She was easy going, but not particularly warm or engaging. While the portions were fine, $35 for a meal that we tossed out after 2-3 bites is incredibly frustrating. I hate wasting money and fresh seafood, but it was just that bad. read more

We went to TCT on the high recommendation of, and joined by, our daughter and her husband. The establishment is across from the Anchorage Museum and is part of the Anchorage Mall. It features a blend of barstool window seats, barstool bar seats, high-top tables, and standard-height tables. We went for a very late lunch, which made the quick food delivery and yet under-attentive service a little perplexing. Having spent last summer in London, the attraction at TCT for us was comparing and contrasting Alaska Halibut Fish & Chips with the British fare. I wanted to like the Tent City offering; I really did not. For the price ($28/ea), we got three modest pieces of fish and the equivalent of two servings of chips. Both the fish and the chips were mushy (undercooked), with a heavy batter finish in contrast with the light and crisp British offering. The accompanying tarter sauce was an odd raspberry-and-blackberry concoction that my family and I called a pickle aftertaste. The presentation, for the price and the atmosphere, was a confusing combination of a metal basket lined with wax paper (like a 1950's drive-through), plastic water and soda glasses (like a college cafeteria), and real silverware. Other reviews have high praise for TCT so, on our next visit to Alaska, it will be good to give them another try. I was in Anchorage before taking a cruise. We found this place on Yelp and ordered through UberEats. The food came very quickly. We had our order 23 minutes after it was placed. Everything was hot and correct! I had the award winning chowder and it was very tasty. I also got wings and a side salad. The wings were crispy and tasty but there was suppose to be dry rub on the wings and they just tasted like plain fried chicken wings. It never came out - our entrees were served. I had inquired about the poutine and she said someone forgot it. Then several minutes later she came out with the poutine, which had been sitting under the warmer and said it someone did make it if we wanted it. This was after everyone had already eaten half of their dinner. I said NO as it was almost likely luke warm by now. You'd think she just would've served it and comped it since it was her mistake. I ordered the steak salad and the portion and flavor were good. The charred whole green onions are a messy plating - I'd remove that. The risotto was a bit too rich for my daughter's taste. The burgers and fries were probably the best entree that came out to the table (which several people ordered). The truffle fries were delicious but the garlic fries were a let down. While in downtown Anchorage for a day, I was told that I should check this place out. We went for a late lunch/early dinner. The inside seating is limited. We did get to sit at the bar. It wasn't too busy so we were seated right away. The bartender was excellent. She grabbed menus for us right away and took our drink order as soon as we were ready. I decided on the fish and chips. You do get to choose your fries. I had the Parmesan truffle which were delicious. The fish is halibut. It had a good batter and it is not too thick. They do not have regular tartar sauce. They have a raspberry tartar sauce. I was not a big fan of it. It does come with coleslaw, but it is probably like 2 tablespoons of coleslaw. I did not try their beers. I had a glass of Pinot Grigio Instead. The menu is has a little bit of everything. They also have off menu specials. I did ask about the crab legs and they were about $100 for the pound. They have inside and outside seating. This restaurant is located downtown, so you will probably have to pay for parking. On weekdays after a certain time, the meters are free. read more

There are both brews and wines for drinking, and flight options for those wanting to try multiple. It was incredibly flavorful and had a number of the ingredients that I typically like- fresh veggies, cheese, garlic (lots) and a flavorful fish. It had been a while since I went to Tent City but found myself downtown, so I stopped in. They were busy but I was still able to get seated right away. I finally got to try the mimosa flight, which was great. I got the French dip and thought it was amazing! Flavorful, cheesy, and creamy with the perfect amount of horseradish aioli. I would definitely get it again! My husband got the halibut and chips but couldn't have the fries, so they subbed carrots at no charge. I tried a bite and thought it was really good. Therefore, it is important for you to have a reservation during peak hours. However it isn't noisy which is a plus. The food quality to price ratio is pretty good however. So, it is worth the 10-15% higher price point. The meals aren't large but they are filling if you have a standard appetite. Wild Salmon - I had the wild salmon special. It was delicious. It came with season veggies and was delivered on top of a mash potato bed. It was a 10-12 ounce piece of salmon which essentially seasoned to perfection. Would highly recommend. Pro tip: there is a good amount of street parking and a public parking lot within 1 block of the location. Therefore, you don't need to add time to your travel schedule. I have lived in Anchorage for 4 years now and I have eaten at Tentcity Taphouse too many times to count. This is by far my favorite restaurant in the city, for multiple reasons. The staff is always extremely friendly, the environment is consistent, it's a nice place to bring out of town visitors and most importantly the food is really really good. Now I have to admit, I always order the same exact thing, but guests have ordered different menu items and haven't had any complaints. My menu favorites are the duck fries (truffle parmesan), the wings (w/ blueberry and Tennessee hot on the side) and the artic cioppino. All of these items are seasoned to perfection and I highly recommend. Lastly, I always get the mimosa flight which is perfect pairing for these dishes. Highly recommend. read more

Just an average experience today at Tent City Taphouse! I definitely recommend the key lime wheat beer, especially if you like fruity beers or sours. We started with the short rib poutine, but it came without the short rib. We were hungry and didn't realize until we were already nibbling.. we thought maybe the meat was under the cheese? Haha. Eventually we asked our waitress about it and she offered to have it remade, but it wasn't worth it to us because we had already eaten so much of it. It was a tasty dish regardless! All four of us got sandwiches-- the Nashville chicken was definitely HOT not just mild. The bun was super soggy. My sister and I each got the girdwood burger, DELICIOUS. The Bootlegger NY deal was very good, the combination of the oyster mushroom, steak, sauce, and potatoes were excellent. The steak was very tender and flavorful.
