Just finished eating here with my honey. It's a small place with about 4-5 tables. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and he ordered a Philly with fries. Oh i also ordered the cajun desert a pecan crust with chocolate and vanilla pudding. I ate that piece of pie first and I shared it:) I have to say I've eaten a lot of burgers back home in ny. This was a great flavorful burger. My boyfriends Philly was also tasteful, and the fries were delicious! The prices are high due to the quality of the food they serve. Average pricing, it's a la carte so if you want fries you need to order them and the decor is friendly. Definitely the best burgers in town! I ordered the Charlotte burger (?). The burger was so big that it made me okay with how pricey the burger was. The patty was cooked perfectly with right about of juice and flavor. The inside of my burger was fresh and crisp. The sauce on my burger was delicious too! I also tried the onion rings and they were decent. The reason why I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the space is too small and cramped, I had to wait way too long for my burger (maybe about or near 30 minutes), the table wasn't clean, and the service was alright, not great, but I guess you can't really expect too much from a hole in the wall place. Overall, I would very much come here again for a burger, but I will try to get a burger when there aren't very many ppl there. read more

-- The Gang Goes to Tommy's -- Well, this is a pretty shady part of town. But there's a lot of people around, so we should be fine. It's dark, too... Whatever, I'm not scared of the dark. We turned the corner on Spenard right before Benson and pulled into the parking lot where Maps said Tommy's was. I was anticipating the place to be jam packed, considering the place was notorious for being barely standing room only... Yet it was empty except for two people sitting at tables. So far, so good. Considering we didn't get stabbed or shot in the parking lot, I would consider this visit a success even at this early stage. At least we weren't going to eat at Valley of the Moon Park. We went in, grabbed some menus, and checked out what Tommy's had to offer. There were plenty of choices, but it didn't take long for me to decided on the holy grail of burgers: The PAPA D. Yep, that's right, I wanted the D. Here's the thing: the Papa D had onions and tomatoes on it, and I don't like either. But I decided to broaden my horizons. And boy, was it worth it. The burger was the epitome of excellence; a life-changing and genre defining experience, worthy of recognition in the Annals of Burgerdom in the eons to come... If humanity survives long enough to send the Annals of Burgerdom in a space craft to the far reaches of the galaxy, the civilization who finds it will be better off than they were before. The atmosphere of a small burger joint was as expected, other than the small random pupper that came in and started being best buds with everyone. Not much room, but it was cozy and enjoyable. After further review, the ruling on the field is that Tommy's Burger Stop is extravagantly glorious, and a return trip is in the works as we speak. I really really want to LOVE the burgers here...but I just don't. The service is FANTASTIC and the cashiers are so friendly but the burgers are just okay very creative on the toppings but the burger buns are store bought and plain and the burgers are dry and not very flavorful seems like they use a frozen pre-made patty....Other way better places for burgers IMHO but I will still be a loyal customer due to the AMAZING staff, great location and Spenard flair! read more

The entire atmosphere, feel, service and food is always great. It's a very fun place with very fun staff. Ingredients are fresh and sooooo good. What the restaurant lacks in size they make up for in the amazing burgers. The best burgers in town. The building is small. VERY small. The entry to the building will fool you. It's hidden in the patio as you will learn. The staff is incredibly friendly. You will end up waiting quite a long wait for your food, but trust me. It's worth it. The burgers were delicious, colossal, juicy, and the spices used were fantastic. The fries are piping hot and well seasoned. It's definitely a hidden gem of Anchorage. First of all, I'm not a burger kind of guy. I do enjoy a "tasty burger" from time to time however you'll only see one in my hands ever so often. Tommy's is a small hole in the wall in every sense of the word. Little parking, not much room inside to wait (3 or 4 people) and somewhat hard to get to traffic wise during lunchtime. But if you are a fan of a good burger, it's worth the wait. The last time I was in, I was blessed with a nice blue cheese burger that brought a smile to my face and some satisfaction to my palate. While waiting for this much heard of creation, I found myself feeling like I was in someone's house, having a sandwich crafted for me by a colorful person who knew their way around the kitchen. No mere burger from McWhatever or Carls Sr., this was something special. It was juicy, full of flavor, a little messy and satisfying. While I don't visit that often, it's more of a treat place for a burger as opposed to any everyday sort of thing. Somethings should be enjoyed and savored like a fine wine or a beautiful view. I thought this place was worth the fuss. The first time we went, we were told that it would be at least a half an hour wait to get our food, but the nice person taking our order said it would be worth the wait - a customer waiting quickly agreed. So we took a chance, and agreed it was worth the wait. We ended up making another trip later in the week, and the wait was closer to 15 minutes to get our food. The place is small, kind of divey looking. There is limited seating, with a cute patio outdoor eating area that seems hard to grab a seat in when the weather is nice. The menu selection of specialty burgers and Philly cheesesteaks, with a few salads thrown in and a few other picky-kid friendly options. There is also a weekly special that sometimes gets shared on Facebook. When we went the first time, I really thought looking at the place that I was going to need to do some serious blotting before I ate. But surprisingly the burger was that perfect balance of not too dry, nicely moist and not greasy. Same with the fries. The burgers and fries were described as being Cajun seasoned, and it was a nice flavor but not strong or spicy at all, as some Cajun spices restaurants use can be. Ate here twice on my latest visit to anchorage, and throughly enjoyed it both times. The place doesn't look amazing from the outside, but many times these are the tastiest burger joints to eat at. I had papa D burger on my first visit and the special burger the second time around. I do not remember what it was called, but it was basically a deconstructed jalapeño popper, YUM! The fries were excellent and The onion rings were amazing! The people working there are great! They are all upbeat and really seem to enjoy working together. Great burger with great service! Don't know what else one can ask for! Came here on a whim with some of my cousins while I was visiting Alaska. It was all of our first time at Tommy's and I'm surely it won't be our last. I ordered the weekly special, the Battered Husband. Which thanks to my exceptional eavesdropping skills is a pretty sought after burger that is only on the menu for a short amount of time. I had to get on that stat! The burger patty itself was beautifully seasoned, and on top of that they added fried cajun jalapeños, melty Swiss cheese, and an amazing aioli. (I'm all about that aioli). I also had a side of fries which were pretty good, but lacked a little crisp for my taste. I think I'll stick to the onion rings next time which were great. Needless to say I was stuffed, so I got dessert to go (obviously). I ended up getting the carrot cake and Cajun delight to share at home. Both were delicious, not too sweet, but decadent enough to warrant a 5k... Or something. Also service was great, delightful, smiling faces all around. Anyways, this place was great! Definitely a busy place around lunch and dinner. Really small inside and only a few picnic tables. If it nice outside there are tables outside too. The service is very friendly, actually the kind of people who seem to enjoy their job even if it is busy. (They were singing to the music while cooking.) I was more willing to wait because of the friendly, hardworking staff. If you are in a hurry I would recommend ordering ahead to-go. Also if you plan on eating together with a group or big family it might be hard to find seating together. I have only eaten burgers and fries here but I like them so much that I haven't branched out to try anything else. My go to is the Sweet Charlotte burger, it is great. Love the mushrooms and I see they grill them fresh. Also love the classic cheeseburger. A couple of week ago, I decided to try this burger joint to see what all the yelping was about. It certainly is small and out of the way but isn't a deal breaker. There was 2 of us and we ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger, ($8.75) and a Stella Bleu Burger, ($12). We were told that the burgers didn't come with fries so we placed our order for 1 fry, ($2) and 1 onion ring, ($2.50). I certainly was anticipating a real treat after reading all the positive reviews, however, what we received was well below substandard. First the buns were not fresh as they just crumbled in your hands; leaving you a pile of goo. The meat in both burgers had a weird taste so the burgers were not eaten. The fries were so salty they were inedible and the onion rings were so burnt I just left them. I have been to many burger joints in my lifetime and my experience has been when you get a burger and fries/onion rings for this price point you most generally get your money's worth; not so at Tommy's Burger Stop. I don't know if it was the day the regular cook wasn't there or what was the kitchens problem but I would have done better at Burger King. Oh another thing: One of us got sick and started throwing up about 2 hours after eating there. At Tommy's Burger Stop you get way more than just a dive! You're rewarded with high prices, inedible food, and you can end up sick! WOW! What a deal! I am yelping but not in a good way. Avoid this place. Either they get their act together or shut down. I wish Yelp would allow no stars as these guys deserve minus 5 Stars for sure. read more

I had the REL philly and it was delicious. I asked them to hold the bacon because I can. Do without the Slabs of bacon. Well miscommunication and it had bacon. But since it was finely chopped it was noooo big deal. My friends all got burgers. Two of them asked them to hold the 2nd patty on their burgers. I can't imagine them having two parties of their burgers. They were huge portions with just 1! We are here before our hike. I only ate 1/2 with a few fries and was fulfilled . It's small with a couple tables inside and some tables outside at the entrance in a fenced off patio decorated with potted plants and flowers and umbrellas to keep the place shady. Tommy's is a great local gem. I agree with other reviewers, the neighborhood is a little sketch and the front door is a little hard to find (left side of building) and yes only 3 tables inside. But who cares, take it to go or use the ample tables they have outside ( weather permitting) I tried the Stella blue. If you like blue cheese.. get this burger! The burger is a humongous portion, that just melts in your mouth. Every bite has delicious flavor.. get everything on it. I also ordered the onion rings...delish! I am kind of a snob about onion rings. These are not those gross, crumbly rings you get in your grocers freezer. These are deep fried, beer battered goodness.
