When they first came onto the Sunnyside scene, Tommy's was easily one of the highest rated dry cleaners in the neighborhood. Fast forward a decade or so, the experiences are mixed. It's been a hot and cold experience for me, and I'm not even talking about the wash. I believe they were at their best a handful of years ago. I never had to worry about not receiving my suits on time, they were clean, the service was professional, and the prices were just right. I felt like they were reliable and I had considered using them for alterations for size adjustments and garment restoration. After a couple of snafus (wrinkled shirts, missing pants) that would later get resolved, I didn't go as often. Customer service has become a bit of an issue here, as calling in was met by shortness and in person experiences were becoming awkward. Inflation has naturally crept up over the years; they were once an affordable option that has now become one of the priciest in the hood. I know they have it in them to do a better job but I hesitate in wanting to go back. There are other places that I find that can still do the job and more importantly, without the hassle. read more

I hate to do this, but their service has just gone down and prices have gone up so high that I felt the need to tell my fellow sunnyside/woodside neighbors. They charged me $20 for a very very simple dress hem on a plain cotton dress. Then they charged $20 to patch up a small hole in my boyfriend's jeans and it CAME OUT HIDEOUS. You can totally see where they patched it up and so sloppy looking. I highly recommend going to Raymond's Tailor Shop in woodside. Its right off of 61st stop on 7. I've gone to Toms dry cleaners for multiple pieces now and it's always a hit and miss-- sometimes they do an okay job, sometimes a sloppy job, and every once in a while I'm satisfied with the work. I keep going back to them because they are close to where I live. They charged $44 to tailor two cotton t-shirts and I wouldn't mind paying higher prices if the quality of the work is good, but unfortunately it's not. Tom is an amazing tailor-- I've brought him many dresses than he manages to get just right ( and that's not easy with you're smaller than a size 00, skinny but with curves). I'm sorry if other reviewers thought he and his staff were rude, but they are actually people who like to take their time with each customer (so if there's someone before you, he's not going to suddenly cut them off). This is old school Queens at its best. Tailors need time (I've done some small, minor sewing projects myself), and I try to prepare for that, but recently I needed a dress for a special event altered in a week, and he told me, "no problem." This review is re: their tailoring, not dry cleaning - I've never tried the latter. It saddens me I can't give a higher review, as I want to support small local businesses. Their tailoring skills are mediocre, I've had things they've repaired rip/open up again within a year of them fixing it. And their "ready" dates are unreliable, I've had to go there three times to pick something up because it wasn't ready on either the first, or the second, date they told me it'd be ready. Sorry to say I don't know why one would go here instead of "Band's Cleaners" nearby on 45-14 43rd Avenue, at least for tailoring. Their work and their reliability are clearly better. read more

Excellent dry cleaning and tailoring service. I am a regular customer and have consistently experienced friendly and timely customer service here. I've brought everything from gowns to coats to jeans to be altered and Tom and his brother consistently get it perfectly right. They've been able to remove candle wax from chiffon and wine from tulle without any damages to the clothing. I will say they are on the pricey side, but I'm always happy with the result. About a week ago I was in a pinch - I had waited too long to get a bridesmaid dress hemmed, and came to the realization that there were no tailors in my neighborhood (Jackson Heights) that I trusted to do the work on time. Yelp reviews led me to Tom's, and only three business days later I have my dress back and couldn't be happier with it. I rushed in on Friday afternoon, tried it on in Tom's very clean, private fitting room, and had it pinned up to the desired length. He explained that it was going to be a little pricey because the dress has three layers, which I was expecting. He also thoroughly explained how he would cut it so that the design wasn't lost. He was polite and courteous, and his work was both excellent and prompt. Worth the trip on the 7 train! read more

I chose Tommy's to dry clean my second-hand wedding dress after reading all the exceptional Yelp Reviews. The reviews are true! I took my dress in to be cleaned a month before the wedding and the guys at Tommy's were professional and very reassuring that they would be able to get out the floor stains left from the previous bride who wore it. When I came back for the dress, it was perfectly pressed, zipped up and protected. From the way they fussed with the dress, giving me detailed instructions on how to transport it home properly, I could tell that they took their job seriously. I was very happy I went with them - and the price was far more reasonable than any of the prices quoted to me in Manhattan. Just note that it's cash only! read more

This was a negative experience I'll never forget. I took my bridesmaid dress for my best friends' wedding to have chest cups sewn in on a Tuesday. He measured me, I felt comfortable, he assured me it would be ready by 4pm that Friday. The wedding is Saturday. We show up at 4:30pm on Friday...he HASN'T EVEN STARTED THE WORK! HE FORGOT! We had to leave for the rehearsal dinner so we couldn't come back that night AND I had to be ON a train to Long Island Saturday morning at 8am. Valiantly my boyfriend got up at 6:45am and was at his shop at 7am on the dot but all he did was discount $8! I shouldn't have had to pay at all! The STRESS of the entire ordeal ensured my business will never ever belong to Tommy's Tailor and get this, the work took ONE HOUR so it could have been done by Wednesday or Thursday. Well, there aren't a lot of dry cleaners in the hood and yelpers like this spot. Alterations: hit or miss. Take your chances but start with something you wouldn't care too much about it if it get wrecked (like a blue shirt of mine. RIP) Dry cleaning: fine. My wife's stuff didn't get shrunk. My stuff is fine too. Bring a bottle of ouzo for the 2 owners cause they're a pair of old school curmudgeons. God help you if you lose your dry-cleaning ticket and they have to go through their book (no computer system). You'll get a stink eye and a sigh as if you asked for help pushing a car out of ditch. read more

I actually happen to love bringing my clothes here. They do a pretty good job. I haven't had any issues, which is good in my book. I think the older man (who I believe is the owner) is super sweet! I moved out of Sunnyside a year ago and I still take my suits there. I'll spend 2 hours on the train if I have to. Tommy always puts away my collar bars, keys, coins, anything I leave in my pockets...which is considerably more than I can say for the cleaners in my new neighborhood. If I was in a hurry for work, he'd let me take a shirt from my previous drop and I paid for the order after work. I don't think they need any more businesses. They don't welcome customers, so don't bother going in as if you owe them money! Plus the quality of the work is just so so.... Since Yelp prefers me to add details to my dissatisfactory experience to prove my point, please see the bullet points below: 1) poor attitude: guy standing behind the counter looking annoyed. When asked a question about the price for altering a dress, he replied in a very impatient tone:" well I need to see your dress. I can't give you a price if you don't show it to me." Then he moved on to the customer behind me. Well, did I mention that I'm belong to a certain group of minority? I'm not their usual customer I guess. This also wasn't my first time using their service. I've been going there a couple of times for dry cleaning and tailored 2 dresses there. so I was disappointed at their attitude toward a returning customer. 2) quality of work: why I said it's just so so. Tailoring: it's not amazing. For the price they charge (notice $$$ sign on Yelp), I expected neater stitches and not using a button to end the stitch (see my photo). I found that very odd. Dry cleaning: I've definitely brought home wool skirts with the same stain on the front or the stains magically reappear after a couple of days. He kept exhaling loudly like my questions were beneath him. Now, maybe some users have good luck with this place but the man at the front counter was so rude and talked to me like I was an idiot for asking simple questions about alterations. I rode my bike a mile to get my dress pants altered based on yelp reviews. First, the arrogant dude behind the counter is rude with every interaction. They told me it would take a full week to hem my pants. When I rode my bike another mile to get them back on the day they told me they'd be ready at 3:30pm, they told me the pants weren't ready yet, and maybe they'd be ready again in an hour. Rude dude told me "I say Saturday! I still working on!" as though I had wronged him by showing up the day they told me they'd be ready. Rude dude never said "End of business day Saturday," he just said "Come back Saturday, pants ready Saturday." I didn't have the time to wait around for them to "maybe" be ready in an hour, so I had to wear different pants to the wedding and come back 2 days later when it was too late for me to use the dress pants. A second guy (I think the tailor) simply said "sorry" as though that were a magic word that made problems going away, he didn't do anything to make up for the situation or offer any kind of discount, so I paid to have pants tailored for nothing, and the whole time the rude guy behind the counter grit his teeth at me and gave me the death stare. I will never give them my business again. I don't recommend anyone use them unless they enjoy being talked down to and have no deadlines in life. Please. I beg of you. DO NOT GO HERE!! I have never done a Yelp review and am so infuriated, I NEED to do one. Mind you I read the mixed reviews on here and saw that most of the problems had to do with tailoring. And maybe some people just had bad days. I figured I'd give it a shot. I went in to get a comforter cleaned. That's it. Just a comforter. I spoke to the younger of the two men and he was lovely. Brought it in on a Monday afternoon, said it would be ready by Saturday. I showed up Saturday around 1pm, gave them my ticket, and they searched and searched. They couldn't find it. The older of the two said it would be ready at 4:30pm. I was busy at that time and they're closed on Sunday's. So I showed up Monday afternoon. Only the older man was there this time. Gave him my ticket. Again he looked; it was nowhere to be found. Apparently they outsource certain garments. Mine was one of them. He called the other place to see if it was ready (which meant that had I gone back later that Saturday as he asked, it still would not have been there). The other place said it would be ready the following day (today). Well I just got back from there and I am NEVER going back. Not only was the older man that works at Tommy's extremely nasty to me when I asked him why it took so long, but told me he should charge me twice. Also, my comforter; not cleaned. Oh sure, it smells pretty, but the darker spot that they said they would easily be able to lighten, LOOKS WORSE. He obviously lost my business there, but I want to save anyone else the trouble and especially the money they would waste here. DO. NOT. GO. HERE. read more

Came in to get sleeves shortened on a shirt. Tailor looks at them and says "we'll shorten these about a cuff's worth." I ask "...can we measure that?" He takes a pin and flop the cuff over, it looks about the right length, so I say OK. He then says it'll take 2 weeks to do. Which also seems really long, but again I say OK. And it's going to be $18. Which seems way to much for a shirt, but I'm not thinking strategically this fine day, so I say OK again. 2 weeks later, I come back and get the shirt, and it looks like they just cut the last 2 inches of each sleeve off with scissors and folded the end back on itself. Each sleeve used to have the cuff, and then another button mid-forearm - what they did was just remove the mid-forearm button, and fold the cuff way back up, so that you can actually still see half the forearm buttonhole sticking out under the cuff. I've gotten a lot of shirtsleeves done, and this is without a doubt the worst job I've ever seen on it. The shirt's basically a loss. Note, they did exactly what they said they were going to do, and it's really my fault for letting them do it. So, lesson learned - for tailoring, go elsewhere (L&Z did some good work for me shortly thereafter). read more

When I brought it back to Tommy and said he'd "noticed it while cleaning". Though when I asked why he didn't say anything, he had no answer. He would not attempt to fix it or offer recompense. This place genuinely deserves all of its five star reviews. Wow. I've been a customer for seven years here, and they have never let me down. They genuinely care about the condition of my clothes. They have never sent me home with a damaged or discolored item EVER. Tom does excellent alterations, and can also re-line coats and store furs during summer. He has re-lined my best cashmere coat, and I actually think he improved on the original. He has done complicated alterations to some of my cocktail dresses, and they all came out perfectly. I would trust Tom with something special (like a wedding dress or a favorite vintage item). Recently, I stopped by and noticed that he was making drapes for someone - they looked perfect. Prices are reasonable (they do not accept credit cards or checks - bring cash!). The best part of the experience is the lovely manners of Tom and his family. They started addressing me by name on only my second or third visit to their business. It's a pleasure to stop by and chat with them. This cleaner is one of the best cleaners i've come across so far. I had some dresses cleaned before and they did a great job except for the spot i forgot to mention myself. If i hadn't forgotten to mention it, he probably would've gotten it out. Anyways, I trusted him with 2 burberry trench coats and they look absolutely new. So yeh, I like this cleaner that much. Tom is one of the best alterations people I have ever used. He has cut down suits, narrowed pants and reworked sport coats for me at a fraction of the cost I would have paid in the the city. I wish there are negative stars. I went to the place to drop a few dresses and more importantly ask if they can do wedding gown cleaning. The guy Tom said it takes 3 week. Then I was like oh that won't work because I'm moving out of the town in two weeks. He thought a second and said I can do it for you, bring your dress over. Then I went back home and brought my dress (it's heavy) back 40 mins later. The same guy Tom checked his wedding gown pickup schedule and told me you know what I couldn't get it done on time but I can double check at noon if there is any possibility. I said ok pls call me back asap because if you couldn't I will hand it to my mother-in-law this afternoon while she visits. Of course he didn't call me. I called back at 2:40 and he told me it couldn't be done. I said alright I will just go and pick it up. So I went down to this place for the third time, in a fucking hot summer afternoon. He didn't say sorry and only asked for the receipt. I realized I forgot to bring it and I was like it's such a hot day and this is the third time I came down here (for nothing!), I will not do something like bringing in receipt and asking for a gown after you already returned it to me. He said no way I need the receipt. Like after he gave me all that trouble he doesn't feel sorry at all. I really don't want to go back to this place again and asked him to give me back the other two dresses (with receipts). He said they were already delivered and will be ready this Thursday.
