There is nothing fancy about a hot dog, nor should there be. It is simple food created to feed you cheap and make it tasty enough that you don't question the merits of if its social status. Hot dogs are best devoured in humble surroundings, whether it be from a cart, at a sporting event, or, as is the case here, in a humble little hole in the wall. I had a foot long hot dog with kraut, Tom's sauce, onions, and mustard. The "sauce" was a lot like Alabama hot dog places' sauce, a semisweet sauce with chili flavorings. Honestly, I am not the biggest fan, but I could not deny that it was a good hot dog. It was a Kent's pork/beef blend, which is far better than the hot dogs with poultry as a predominant meat. If you're looking to get a dog, come downtown to Tom's hotdogs. One of the only restaurants around that serves Pepsi products, which I very much welcome due to my great liking of Pepsi. The ambiance of the place is outstanding. They have license plates from each state and it's very interesting to look. Austin was very respectful and courteous. I've been to a few hot dog places that were fine but Tom's has a clue and goes above and beyond the usual hot dogs as they also have burgers and chicken salad and such. And the hot dogs too aren't boring, with all sorts of toppings. Today's lunch was a pair of "Tom's Specials" which it turns out have onions and mustard and beef and sauerkraut and something that might have been "beef sauce". They were tasty and a little messy and surprisingly filling. Yep, two hot dogs and some potato chips and I was full. Tom's is a narrow storefront and so it's quite full at lunch time with a couple tables of regulars, some counter seats and a couple of tables outside. Good stuff! read more

Oh Toms, why don't you just take all of my money and we move in together? I went in and bought a dog, now why did I think that one would be enough? I ended up eating three dogs, so thanks for being tasty enough to send me past my limits. Wow, these dogs are tasty and fast and varied. The have a small, a super and even a foot long. I will probably have to eat a few foot Kong's the next time that I stop there. They don't seem to judge you so just keep eating like I did. As much as I heard good things about this place, I was disappointed. I ordered the scrambled dog which according to the doordash menu includes jalapenos and onions of which I did not get. The chili was very tasty, the bun and chips were soggy but that had to do with delivery, and I am sure would be fine if eating in the restaurant. However, the hot dog was absolutely disappointing. It was a hot dog that resembled a cheap grocery store hot dog. Literally an Oscar Meyer hot dog which had some grill marks on one side that was cold throughout. Can't say I will return.. read more

Just had our first burger at Tom's. A basic one atw and a bacon cheeseburger. Meat was precooked and well done. I like mine a genuine medium doneness. Tasty hand pattied beef, way too big for the bun. No fries, chips only at extra cost. Very quickly served. Though it's self service they ask for a tip on the checkout screen. Awesome chili dogs here. They are messy though. You definitely get your money's worth. Premium weenie is heavily loaded with a Greek inspired very meaty paprika seasoned chili. It's not the kind of chili dog you can eat with one hand. Much less in three bites while riding a bicycle. Place is clean as a whistle and service is agreeable. You might can eat two but if you are like me you are going to give that second one a long look before biting into. Burgers looked good walking by but we didn't try them. If I had painted my house with the chili served here instead of going with Sherwin Williams I never would have had to of repainted it. I recognize that a Hot Dog joint is "no frills" - however, that does not justify being lazy, sloppy, and complacent. Tom's Hot Dogs is a hole-in-the-wall, placed out of time (circa 1970's, I should think) - and not in a good nostalgic kind of way. I suppose, in many ways, it is representative of the Historic Panama City downtown area where it is located - withering away into mediocrity with no sense of pride. Don't get me wrong, folks, it wasn't bad food. It was, however, nothing special - something that anyone could've easily created at home for significantly less money. The "stadium prices" that they charged for their food was ridiculous. I mean, $11 for a a couple of regular sized chili dogs of this quality with a couple of fountain drinks is outrageous - and it didn't even include french fries (they don't even offer fries!). Great hot dogs! I loved little hole in the wall places! I bumped into this place while shopping downtown and was very excited to see a place to get hot dogs, The seating is limited but worth being uncomfortable. Brining small kids during lunch time may be challenging, because there is no room for strollers. I had a hot dog with spicy mustard, onions and relish. The relish was very good! I also had chips and un-sweet tea. The tea was very good and they did good at replenishing your drink while you eat.
