I decided to take the boys out to get a burger, we dined in at the restaurant as they do not have a drive thru. The parking in front is limited due to neighboring businesses but they do have parking in the back. I got the colossal burger which is a hamburger with pastrami and the boys got a cheeseburger special that comes with fries and a fountain drink. The employees were very friendly, polite and professional. The dining area was clean with plenty of tables to sit at and you can eat peacefully, it was quiet and clean. The food was pretty bad and it was hot inside even though it was night, the cashier guy at the night was respectful and helpful, they messed up my food and when the cashier tried to tell the cooks they messed up my food, they blamed it on him and started cussing him out, poor kid. The inside is clean and has that true "mom and pop shop" feel. Our cashier was attentive and very friendly. The prices here are very fair unlike another Tom's jr restaurant I've been to! For 2 meals and 1 drink plus tax, $24 for a sit down joint is unheard of now! The portions are generous! Neither of us could finish our entire meals! I ordered the carne asada burrito wet style. $7.99 for the burrito as is , plus another $1.99 for the wet style. The burrito is massive! It contains plenty of meat and not an overwhelming amount of filler carbs. The carne is chopped into small pieces, which gives you plenty with each bite. The salsa is flavorful and not overpowering. It comes with beans and rice but it would be plenty of food without! The rice isn't traditional Spanish rice. It tastes like Mediterranean rice pilaf but it sure is good. You can really tell that they make the beans. No nasty metallic taste like they come from a can! I've been burned by restaurants using canned refried beans in the past, so I appreciate their dedication! The carne asada quesadilla had a generous amount of protein and came with fries. So I ordered this Chicken Teryaki plate. Pic showed it had some nice Broccoli on the plate and this is what I got. I don't even need to say much about the soggy ass Broccoli CRUMBS I got, other than it was about enough to roll a blunt with. Chicken had no flavor. Obviously wasn't seasoned. The Teryaki Sauce was nasty AF. There was nothing good about this other than the yellow chiles I had on the side. I wish I could show you a pic of this plate they have up at the counter. Felt like a burger for dinner and feeling adventurous. Came to a new spot, Toms. Wow! This is a hidden gem. The food was fresh and delicious. Tom's Jr Burgers is the newest burger joint in Downey to date (8/10/17). There are a few key adjustments that could be made and this place will be solid 4 stars (at least) all the way. The restaurant is very clean and decorated nicely. The fresh flowers on each tables were a nice touch. The scalding hot water in the women's restroom on our second visit (7/21/17) is an easy fix. If it hasn't been already, I hope it will be fixed soon because there is currently no way for patrons to adjust the hot/cold settings. My kiddos asked to clean their hands with wet wipes instead. The service is very nice and respectful. The food is right at that teeter totter level, though. You receive a good portion for the price. But it'd be cool if they'd ask you how you want your burger cooked. I eat burgers medium rare, but my hubby and kids aren't down with that. It surprised me how rare the burgers come out since they are thin patties. Not the greatest quality either. I recommend the DUI (carne asada and pastrami chili cheese) fries. Those are pretty good and alone are enough to fill my belly. That and some jamaica juice. They also have horchata and some kind of lemonade (I didn't taste it, but the kids liked it) and fountain drinks. The only reason this isn't a 1 star review is because the food was still decent. Posted on behalf of my mother: I called in my order ahead of time, about 15 mins, and spoke to a male. I ordered a chicken strip combo and a bacon cheeseburger combo. Upon arriving I told the female working the register that I was there to pick up phone order. She looked puzzled and asked what my order was. She then told me she couldn't find it and said she never got a phone order. She was rude and made it seem like I was making up that I had placed a phone order. I verified that I called the correct number, which I did, and showed her my call log. I then placed my order and asked to speak to a manager. She told me that the manager was her cousin and that he was in TJ for the weekend. So I asked for his number so I can contact him after the weekend. She refused to give me his information. She then called someone and admitted over the phone that the male working with her didn't put in my order after receiving it. She did nothing to rectify the mistake and her rudeness. Only after speaking to her "morning manager" she offered me a free drink or extra fries. Which I declined and got my food and left. The letuce and mixed greens were really good. the salad included cuccumbers, tomato, cheese and of course grilled chicken. The chicken was flavorfull and plenty. I've been asking for another burger spot in Downey and it sounds like the burger gods listened. Finally, a regular burger spot without the trendy hipster vibe. Yeah we have a couple other burger spots here in Downey but the quality at those other places has been kind of lacking if you ask me. So what's the verdict? It was actually pretty good. People complain about the price tag but those are probably the same people demanding a $15 minimum wage increase... what did you think was gonna happen, everything to stay cheap? The prices are reasonable in today's standards. Expect to pay about $10-$13 per person depending if your hungry. I ordered the fried chicken dinner as it's normally a classic at burger spots like this and it didn't disappoint. The chicken was very tasty! The fries were good too but I'm kinda sad they weren't the usual thick cut fries, instead we got these thin cut fries like what you get at a corporate fast food joint. The wifey got a bacon avocado burger and she liked it which says a lot because she is very picky about her burgers. All and all, Tom's Jr Family Restaurant is a welcomed addition to a restaurant crowded Downey. The food was good, the prices were reasonable. The service was great with very friendly staff.
