PLEASE DO NOT BUY IN TOMS PET OUTLET FRENCH BULLDOG I bought my dog Zeus from this place, and it turned out to be one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life. I paid nearly $5,000 in na French bulldog believing I was bringing home a healthy, well-cared-for puppy. Sadly, I was wrong. Zeus had health issues from the very beginning. Despite all the love, care, and medical attention -- including over $10,000 spent at a veterinary hospital -- Zeus passed away at just 1 year and 6 months old. No animal deserves to suffer like that, and no family should have to go through the pain of losing a pet so young. The emotional and financial damage this caused me is beyond words. With a broken heart, I'm leaving this review as a warning: do your research before buying from this place. Don't be fooled by promises or appearances. I truly hope no one else goes through what I went through. This entire experience traumatized me deeply. Losing Zeus so young shattered me emotionally, and I'm currently on medication just to help cope with the pain. Nothing will bring him back, but I hope my words can protect others from the same grief. read more

This place is awesome. They have helped me so much with my animals. I first came here when I got my bunny, and purchased him and his supplies. He himself was around $60 and they were so kind and friendly. This was years ago. Around 4. I still go to this place to grab supplies and I purchased 2 betta fish from them. They came healthy unlike other pet stores! My dad purchased mollies and guppies two seperate times ( from another place ) and got too overwhelmed when they started to multiply lol. The nice workers at Tom's agreed to take some in and that was the kindest thing they could've done. They took in all the guppies and majority of the mollies and that lifted a crazy weight off of our back. This is an awesome place that actually cares for your animals! read more

This place was just as bad if not WORSE than major pet store chains. It seemed that most of the animals were poorly bred but were misrepresented as healthy and cared for. Many people can tell the dogs come from Amish puppy mills. When I was there they had a full litter of 6 week old kittens, they should not be away from their mother at that age. When I asked the owner where they came from he said they were rescued, which I won't even get into why that doesn't make sense. They were also selling rabbits that said they were dwarfs, they were literally not dwarf rabbits, just babies... Before I realized all these issues a adopted a beautiful parakeet, which passed away within a week from neurological issues. It was very traumatizing seeing the poor bird have to go through that. The owner had no business owning a pet store selling animals, he was clearly happy to cut corners on their well being. Should have just stuck to selling pet supplies. It was a horror show of animal cruelty. I am THRILLED to see that they are now permanently closed. read more

I would give this 0 stars if I could. Just went to Tom's Pet Outlet to possibly purchase a Bullibea puppy. My husband asked a man working there if we could play with the puppy. He rolled his eyes, sighed, and said "we don't let people play with them." While my husband was walking back toward me, I noticed another store employee lifting the bullibea out of their holding area so another customer could play with her. So ....I guess they do allow people to see them. I guess we weren't the right people? My husband again approached the original man who looked visibly annoyed. He said " ... do you want a tour ?" (What?) My husband said: "we wanted to play with that dog that someone else is playing with now." The man said: "we only let people play with them if they want to buy them." Again, the man looked visibly angry. So we left. ??!! Um??!! Why would we come to a place that sells dogs if we didn't want to buy one. Also, how would you know what we wanted. You never asked. I like to patronize local businesses whenever possible and especially when they're truly a local operation like Tom's. I have a sick pet and I've been there several times recently trying to find things that may help and when I asked for Tom's advice he jumped right in. However, I went there today looking for a specific item I last bought on Amazon for $16.99 and picked up 2 at Toms and was charged almost $60, as in $27 each. I only took one. Then there's a very sweet kitten howling for attention in a cage, a plain black domestic shorthair kitten loaded with personality for $349.00. Unreal, there's probably one of them at every local SPCA for $60 including spaying. I didn't check out the dogs by the door for sale, but I'd bet they're just another overpriced commodity there. I'd hate to lose another local businessman, but there's a difference between making a decent living and making a killing. read more

I bought a puppy from Tom's Pet Outlet and she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at only 2 years old. She was born with this horrible disease. All I can do now is leave this review in hopes that whoever reads it will take my personal experience into consideration and not buy a puppy from this pet store (or any pet store at all). Adopt from a reputable rescue or shop responsibly by heavily researching breeders that do all the required health testing per the breed you are interested in (OFAs are important, do not settle for only Embark DNA). There are many Facebook groups to help find reputable breeders, as well as the breed club websites that are a great start and can aid in searching. Tom's Pet Outlet and the vast majority of other pet stores that carry puppies support puppy mills. I recall researching the "breeder" on my dog's papers that I was given and articles were coming up relating to animal abuse. I have chosen to look at this unfortunate outcome of her health as a learning experience on my part to never purchase from Tom's or another pet store again when wanting to add a new addition and as an opportunity to get the word out there that pet stores and puppy mills go hand-in-hand. I purchased our new puppy Zoey at Toms pet outlet just over 2 months ago. We had been searching and searching for a black Standard sized Goldendoodle for a few months with little to no luck. The 2 well known doodle breeders in New Jersey wanted $3000+ for puppies, and I just couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a puppy. Since we own an older rescue black lab with a very dominant personality, a puppy was the way to go. Jersey doesn't have any more traditional pet stores with puppies anymore after puppy mill laws shut them all down. Living close to Philadelphia, I expanded my search to the eastern part of PA in hopes of finding our dream puppy for the right price. I came across Toms Pet Outlet and wasn't exactly sold on the idea of getting a pet store puppy mill dog. I did some research, and after being reassured by other positive reviews as well as the asking price for an adorable black golden doodle, I went for a visit. The store is kept VERY clean. They do not keep too many puppies in store at a time, which I liked. Since my main objective for going was to get our puppy, I didn't explore the store too much, but it appeared they had just about everything you could imagine regarding pets of all kinds. After having the opportunity to play with our prospect puppy in a private pen, I decided she was coming home with us. She was very clean, friendly, and displayed no signs of abuse or being a product of a "puppy mill". One of the owners helped get me situated with the paperwork and puppy food, as well as giving a started puppy packet of valuable information as well as the puppy lemon law if anything were to be found wrong with the puppy. Zoey is now 4 months old and is honestly the PERFECT puppy. She loves everyone, humans, dogs, other animals, you name it. She adores our 13 year old black lab and they have bonded instantly. She's been in perfect health and our vet is more than pleased. She's almost tripled in size since we brought her home! After years of taking my dog to this place for a nail trim (without incident) and shopping there they decide to practically double the price of a nail trim. Reason - to get rid of customers asking for that service or overcharge those that want it. Not sure who is running that place but that is one of the dumbest business decisions I've ever heard. My girlfriend and I recently got a pair of female rats from Tom's. We bought all of the things we thought were needed - the staff wasn't very knowledgeable about what was fully required - and proceeded on our way. These were our first rats and were to become to the beginning of our colony. The prices for most of the items were a bit overpriced, but we didn't mind given these were our first and we wanted the best for them. Fast forward a couple of months, and we began to have problems with them. Now, this place had absolutely no records for the rats, at all. No papers, nothing saying where they came from, no aging, anything of the sort. We asked on other occasions just to make sure. After multiple vet visits for the two, we decided that the larger of the two was unfit to be a pet and looked to rehome her. Upon rehoming her, we learned that they were inbred. The rats were deformed, including the one we were rehoming being hermaphroditic. This tells me that they did no research into their commercial breeders practices and produced, and sold, rats unfit for anything but being feeders. I will never buy any animals from this store again because of this. Having seen the other reviews about all of the puppies being from mills, and now experiencing the inbreeding of rodent pets and having to break our own hearts to rehome our favorite due to a massive special need, I can say that I will never trust their handling of animals again. Couple this with their lack of stock for toys and the like for them and the lack of communication when we attempted to have them find us a third(much to our chagrin) before we found out about the inbreeding, I am extremely dissatisfied. read more

I purchased a Beabull on 2/9/2017 from Tom's. All of the dogs were very healthy, very well socialized, and The areas that they were kept were all spotlessly clean. A veterinarian sees the animals once a week and I cannot be happier with the dog that I have. They did a really wonderful job socializing him and they were also very knowledgeable about the breeds and helpful. I'm very thankful that I went there. Please disregard any negative reviews. Also I might add the animals at Tom's are treated way more humanely than the Woman's Humane Society, PAWS, ASPCA etc. treat the dogs they rescue. I've been visiting a lot of shelters over the past 6 months as I was going to adopt. read more

We bought a bichon puppy from Tom's last November. From the minute we brought him home he showed signs of being abused. His feet pads were so matted and full of fecal mater it was painful for him to walk, his ears were infected and he had kennel cough, which he spread to my other two dogs who had been vaccinate. The vet advised there were different strains a kennel cough which are brough from other states; this was most likely what he had and the reason it spread to our other dogs. He is also very skittish and very afraid of men. I called Tom's after we had him at the vet and the groomer to get him cleaned up; the women on the phone told me the reason for all of his issues was he was "one of the older dogs there" and it's hard to maintain all of them.... Do you think maybe they shouldn't have as many puppies there if they can't care for them all? Don't get me wrong I adore our sweet puppy and wouldn't part with him for anything, but after our experience I would never buy from a pet store especially Tom's ever again. read more

I was there a few months ago and it seemed like someone was trying to leave business cards for pet sitting or training. The manager/owner whoever was giving her the 5th degree about everything. It seemed a little tense from my standpoint but the manager/owner seemed nasty. Not sure what the rest of the convo was about but the customer went all around the store and seemed to be interested in buying fish. I assume she did. Then she goes over to the puppies and she seemed very happy playing with them. The manager went over to her and PUSHED her out of the way when the dogs were starting to bark at each other. There's a lot of reviews here that claim Tom's, like most pet stores, probably sells mill dogs. I have no evidence of this in regards to Tom's but it wouldn't shock me as it's pretty common practice. Unfortunately, unless you want to feed your dogs Purina or Science Diet, local pet stores, most of whom sell puppies, are the only game in town for quality pet food. Most of the negative reviews I've seen on Tom's are from folks who bought pets, which I can't speak to. Our dogs are rescues and we strictly buy food and supplies from pet stores, and Tom's has been great to deal with. That said, I've been going to Tom's on and off for 6 or 7 years, and dealt with practically every member of their staff, and never encountered any rudeness - all were very courteous, attentive, and knowledgeable. We occasionally have our dogs' nails trimmed there and they are really great with them, especially our one dog who was a recent rescue and is very nervous. The prices are the absolute best around on premium food, in particular we've bought Taste of the Wild and Wellness products, but the prices are equally competitive on all the premium brands - they beat other local stores and even the internet sites, and that doesn't even include the savings from the frequent buyer's club - one free bag they with every 10th bag you buy. They even special order the food I purchase regularly even though they didn't normally carry it in the size bag I prefer - when I signed up for the club I told them what brand and size I liked and they made sure they had it when I needed it. Tom's is a pet store that carries all types of pets, they have a small but still pretty impressive aquarium section, reptiles, amphibians, guinea pigs, etc. So yeah, it has an odor to it . It's not overwhelming and the store isn't dirty, but the place houses dozens of different types of animals - it's gonna smell. No one except for the staff should be spending so much time there that it's an issue, and I'm sure they're used to it. I would never buy a dog from Tom's or any pet store, and keep in mind pet stores are businesses like any other and will stop carrying products that don't sell - so don't buy the puppies and they'll eventually stop selling them. Meanwhile,Tom's is a great local store to grab your food and supplies at a great price, and I still prefer supporting a local small business rather than a big chain or faceless website. read more

My husband and I were on the puppy search, and unfortunately our landlady was very picky about the breed, size, and shedding level. Growing up my family always rescued dogs but due to our living circumstances we agreed upon a mini aussiedoodle puppy. Had a very hard time finding this breed, even online, for a reasonable price. I was following Toms on Facebook and a picture of our Crosby showed up! We went right away, the staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. They let us play with him for as long as we needed. We have had him for two months now and he's been the best puppy I've ever had. Happy and healthy! I'm very experienced with pets of all types and have been a customer of many individual Petco and PetSmart locations, as well as independent pet stores and shelters/rescues. A friend was looking to get a very specific breed and gender of hamster from a pet store, and I began researching where to find one. I wasn't having any luck until I called Tom's. My initial phone contact at Tom's was with Dorothy. I also spoke on the phone with, and later met, Tom the owner, Jake the assistant manager, and Brooke. Every member of the staff I dealt with was very professional and helpful, and returned calls promptly. I found that they each displayed genuine caring for pets of all types as well as excellent customer service skills. With everything arranged, we visited Tom's to pick up the hamster and everything went seamlessly. I was very happy with how neat and clean the store was. They carry quite a good variety of pet food and supplies. The prices of both the hamster and a package of bedding for her was right in line with any of the chain stores. I found all the pets to be housed in conditions that easily met or exceeded what I've seen at the other pet stores/shelters/rescues that I've visited. Of particular note was the attentiveness to the animals' habitat cleanliness that the employees displayed. I will definitely be back. read more

Everyone here is very friendly and helpful - even helping me take my ginormous bags of cat litter to my car. I frequently buy my rats for my snake, but recently she decided that she wasn't hungry, so I had a live rat stinking up the place. (I hate rats) I called them up and talked to Tom and explained the situation and while they (understandably) don't take returns on live animals, they do take "donations." I hate rats but I try not to make it a habit to be cruel to animals, so I let the $7 go and they took the traumatized stink-machine back, no questions asked. (Did I mention that I hate rats?) They sell puppies and kittens, but they don't lock up the puppies in display cases like other pet stores do. They have an area for them to run around and play and they even have an outdoor caged-in area with a door, so the puppies can run outside as they please. It's really quite adorable, walking in from the parking lot and seeing a couple puppies burst out of the little doggie door and run into the side of the enclosure as they play fight and make their little puppy noises. The most important point about the animals they sell is that they aren't mill puppies and kittens. They work with independent breeders that they trust. My friend bought her puppy their and he has no health problems and he is growing up (fast) to be a (huge) beautiful dog. They have a very large selection of pet food and supplies, and it's always a pleasure to go here. They never let you walk in without being acknowledged and greeted, and they never let you walk out feeling ignored. Although the store doesn't have the big, clean, Petsmart feeling, that could very well be a good thing. They *are* big and they even have an entire room for fish. I have never left empty-handed, unable to find what I'm looking for. It is well worth taking the long way home to stop and pick up the essentials, rather than getting lost in "Pestmart." read more

My husband and I stopped in here last weekend. I must say, compared to many other pet places in the area, this seems to be a top notch facility. The staff was super friendly and willing to help, all of the animal enclosures (including the reptiles, fish, rodents, and birds) were clean and well-kept, and the puppies all looked happy and healthy. I'm usually not a fan of pet stores because of the POSSIBILITY of them sourcing their dogs from puppy mills (I'm aware that pet store doesn't automatically equal puppy mill), but we decided to give this one a chance and were pleasantly surprised with the condition of everything. Obviously, compared to a rescue, the prices are going to be pretty steep here. It's still not a bad option though and I recommend checking it out. They also seem to have a very decent stock of food/supplies, though I can't say how varied it was since I didn't venture into that section of the store for very long. read more

The store is clean, the staff is friendly, answering all of our questions and letting us take our time with no pressure at all. I've been to many pet stores and this one is the best for sure. I was very cautious about buying a puppy at tom's pet outlet after doing research and reading these reviews. However, our experience here was great. The employees were very professional and knowledgeable about all the animals they sold. Specifically, for the puppies, they only have a very limited amount they hold and sell per week so the area that the puppies stay are never filled with puppies and are kept very clean. Our cavachon came with 0 parasites, but did have a minor ear infection which the vet told us was not surprising because cavachons are very susceptible to ear infections due to their long ears. Tom's even refunded us the price of both the ear cleaning and the antibiotics for our puppy. We were very satisfied with this experience and will be coming back! read more

We learned after receiving the "breeder paperwork" that the puppy we purchased from Tom's is likely from a puppy mill given the puppy's origin and breeder in the Lancaster area. The breeder of this puppy was charged for dog neglect in the past. Shame on us for not researching the source of Tom's puppies beforehand. Return policy for fish is 24 hours, and if the fish dies and they are closed don't bother trying to bring it in for a refund the following day because they won't refund it. Prices are on the expensive side. I've heard several different prices for kittens so I guess it depends. Staff is friendly but I'd still rather go elsewhere read more

Joey was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. He made it a point to check in on us throughout our visit and throughly answered our many questions. The puppies were adorable and seemed to be very well cared for. Their pens were clean and spacious for small pups. Also, I think it's great that they allow you to pet the animals so that you can make a connection before making the decision to buy; a lot of stores don't allow you to do this. We found one puppy in particular that we connected very well with, but have not yet put money down to bring her home. read more

When I moved to the area (audubon/norristown), I was pleasantly surprised to see a mom and pop pet outlet nearby. I thought this would be a welcome change from the bigbox petstores I usually shop at, and I couldn't wait to pay them a visit. However, my high hopes were dashed the minute I came in the door with my dogs, and I was rudely greeted by an employee saying, "Don't take those dogs near the puppies!!" I complied with the store's rules and began browsing. I was quite disappointed because the selection of products was not only sparse, but also exorbitantly overpriced, especially for an "outlet." As for the employees, they were not able to provide any quality customer service. Besides the rude greeting I received, there was a group of 3 girls and a man standing behind the counter gossiping and chatting away. I wanted to inquiry about their Nyla bones, but I felt uncomfortable to interrupt conversation, and I decided this place was simply not worth it.
