I've ordered from here a handful of times over the last few months, and the food has been great almost every time. As with some other restaurants I've tried, the quality seems to be better during the dinner shift. The one time the food here was off -- the sauce tasted so weird that I tried a few bites and then tossed the dish -- it was a mid-afternoon order. I've had Jade Cafe take out a handful of times but this last time was disappointing. We ordered the beef chow mein, crab Rangoon and egg rolls. The best I can say about the chow mein was that it was inedible...the beef tasted funny. We left most of it out for the raccoons and, surprisingly, they pawed through but didn't eat any of it. The egg rolls gave me an upset stomach and led to a bout of ...well...I won't go there but you get the idea. What else to say? No way will we ever order from there again. read more

I tried using their $10 off coupon and I'm told (very snarkily ) that it's just for pick up only in very fine print. Ok fine, love your customer service thanks. Management is way defensive and I want to patronize local spots but this place does not have fresh ingredients. The chicken has the consistency of rubber and the beef is old and tenderized to death. Horrible restaurant do not go here ... ordered dinner at noon on Christmas Day for pickup at 6:45 pm. Sent my son to go pick It up and they told him they are running late and to return at 8:30 pm. He tried to cancel the order since they obviously hadn't started It and we were starving and would get other food. They would not allow him to cancel the order and then proceeded to charge us for food we never got. I have called multiple times and they will not give us a refund.... will never return here. read more

Jade was off it's game for a while. In the last yea (2023), the quality seems to have returned. My favorite from have is Kung Pao Chicken. The chicken is gristly on occasion and that turns me off enormously (The chicken is never grizzly at Yummy Bowl for instance), I believe the buyer can opt to pay for a better grade in most anything. Of love to have "gristle-free" chicken, their lo mein and sauces are excellent. I've gotten in the habit when ordering from Jade, specifying that 'I don't want any hard pieces or gristle in the chicken, can you do that?' They say of course and those seem to be the times when the chicken is at its best. Recommended again. read more

Well, I don't do this often. 16 years Yelping, over 100 reviews, this is my second one-star. We got delivery from Jade Cafe. It was prompt, and our order was correct. It was all downhill from there. The beef was greyish, fatty and greasy. Whether on a skewer with peppers and onions (the veggies were mostly raw), or in a kung pao, it was inedible. The chicken was fatty also, and without texture, but better than the beef. However, the chicken curry tasted strongly of saffron and was pretty unpleasant. The shrimp fried rice was boring, but not objectionable. The hot and sour soup was more oily than it was either hot or sour. The wonton soup tasted strongly of something flowery. I understand some people like their spring rolls to taste of peanut butter, which.... Ok.... But I had never heard of such a thing, and nobody in our family could eat these, even our kids who love peanut butter. We threw pretty much the whole order out, and we will not be returning. On the whole, I think my last one star place was better than this. read more

My new favorite Chinese Restaurant! We ordered take out form here and it was ready as soon as I pulled up! We ordered Sesame Chicken, Ma Po Tofu, and Szechuan Chicken! The sesame chicken was recommended by Yelp and it was outstanding! It was fall apart tender and the sauce was delectable! This was the first time I've ever tried Ma Po Tofu, and it was so good as well! The Tofu literally broke when I tried to pick it up and it was covered in a delicious sauce. Lastly, the Szechuan chicken was good, but not great. I was expecting a little more spice from this dish, so maybe next time I need to ask for it. All in all, the great food and great service made this a very enjoyable experience! read more

TLDR: The food is decent. This review is regarding their customer service / delivery, which is atrocious. We had ordered from Jade at least 10 times in the past with mixed results. Tonight was the breaking point with possibly the worst customer service experience I've had on the North Shore. A 2.5 hour delivery time, not to mention 20 minutes on the phone trying to track down the order. No phone calls on their end to say "we're running late" or "sorry about this".. no info from them whatsoever until we called multiple times. If we had known it would take 2.5 hours to get food, especially with 3 kids under the age of 10 waiting for their dinner, we absolutely would've ordered somewhere else. But again, no information or heads-up from Jade. Their attempt to resolve this horrible experience was a $15 refund (the total order was over $115 ) and a suggestion to call them next time instead of ordering online. After explaining multiple times that this was insufficient, we finally got the manger on the phone. The managers hands were tied, as the owner, Cao, refuses to allow a full refund of the meal unless.. and I quote.. we wanted someone from Jade to come back to our house to take the food off of our countertops.... presumably to prevent us from eating the cold Chinese food, and I guess throw it in the garbage instead. In the end we waited 2.5 hours, and spent over 20 minutes on the phone trying to find our (cold) food. They provided a $25 credit. The manager offered to pay the refund out of his own pocket, which we declined. The problem is not with Jade's food, it's perfectly fine. The problem is with the owner and his complete disregard for their customers (and his own employees), and his lack of willingness to make right on an extremely poor experience. read more

It's hard to find a good Chinese place in the suburbs but I am relieved to live nearby Jade Cafe. I usually don't write reviews the first time right away because I want to see how consistent the food and service are. Because of the pandemic, we have not dined inside Jade but only ordered take out. 4 out of 5 experiences Jade's takeout has been consistent. Our go to dishes are the Sesame chicken, crab rangoons, triple delight with tofu, and string beans. Sesame chicken: very flavorful, crispy and the chicken is cooked just right. Never had dry chicken yet. Also comes with a side of freshly steamed broccoli. Crab rangoons: I wish there were more pieces but the order comes with 4. It's very meaty and has a good amount of filling compared to the wrapper ratio. Triple delight with tofu: Flavorful white gravy tossed with pea pods, broccoli and water chestnuts. Out of the 4 or 5 times we've ordered this dish, the last time we ordered it was not as good. There was barely any gravy in it and lacking in the variety of mentioned vegetables. Luckily they offered credit on the next one. String beans: They are tossed in a garlic sauce but just a side note that their sauce includes soy sauce in it. I prefer this dish to be made with fresh garlic and some oil. I wasn't a fan of the soy sauce, it takes away the fresh taste of garlic. read more

We ordered the crab Rangoon which was good!, The orange chicken which was 5 out of 10, it wasn't super flavorful and texture was off. But the real loser was the chicken pad thai. It was flavorless and mushy, and I didn't eat more that two bites, which was a bummer since that's what I wanted the most. Definitely will not order from here again. And the rating also reflects that when I called to express dissatisfaction with one of the dishes that I picked up, they brought a replacement to my door VERY quickly. And hot. Service is fast and friendly. That said, I would not order the pad thai again. As another writer noted, so so so so bland. Glad I have some chili sauce at home to put on it. The real problem is the menu doesn't list the fact that they put BELL PEPPERS in it. No one does that. If I had seen that I'd have ordered without, but the menu doesn't reflect it. I asked and was told people love bell pepper in pad thai. Nope. It's not even a matter of taste, they don't belong in this dish. Google it, order it anywhere else - you will not find bell pepper. When they came to drop off the remade dish, they asked for the uneaten one. I mean, I gladly handed it over but found that strange. Most places tell you to throw it away. In our search for a go to Chinese food restaurant by our new home we came across Jade Cafe. Overall we were impressed. They serve the type of egg rolls we really like - a thick wrapper with peanut butter in the filling. I was hoping their pot stickers would also have a thick wrapper but instead they use a thin noodle type wrapper. Regardless the pan fried pot stickers were good. We also tried their fried rice and a tofu and vegetable dish. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and will definitely return for carry out. read more

Got food poisoning from egg rolls and took 3 days to recover- called in and chef told me to feel free to give his number to the health department and hospital. Tried again a few times and while food tasted great it was super spicy and needed a whole new dinner for the two kids for which it was ordered. Called to see if they could redeliver (literally 20 seconds away) and they told me they couldn't do anything about online orders and would consider a half credit next time. First time ever ordering here we were very pleased; had unexpected guests and they were in the mood for Chinese - we ordered Moo Shu pork, shrimp egg foo young and chicken fried rice. The flavor was great, umami and we loved that it was not too salty like many other restaurants. We had another favorite in Highland Park which has closed and we are very happy to have a new favorite! I ordered the following items and take in mind, I adore Green Scallion Pancake (for those curious, it's similar to the Korean Seafood Pancake but only scallions and the Pancake was thinner) and this didn't fail to impress me. A delicious mix of salty and crispy, I was very happy with my appetizer. The Pepper Steak Tomato dish was good, but I had the wrong impression that it was a tomato sauce dolled up; instead, it was okay pepper steak (too soft for me preferences) with cut up tomatoes added. In sum, I'd 100% eat here again for the pancake, but I'd get a different main entree. P.S. prices weren't bad considering it's highland park, it's a small place so don't recommend for huge groups read more

I have lived in HP for 30 years and have only ordered from Jade a couple of times, the last time being over 15 years ago. They were pretty much off my radar for takeout until a friend decided to order out from Jade last night - I was simply impressed. Aside from appetizers, we ordered Beijing Noodles, Lomein Noodles, Kung Pao Chicken, and Snow Pea Pod. Here are the main takeaways from my experience: 1. Not overly greasy or oily preparations - All noodle dishes were perfect and not oily; Kung Pao sauce was also perfect in terms of oil as well as spice level. 2. Plenty of meat in the meat dishes 3. Excellent portion size in general 4. Dishes listed as "spicy" like Kung Pao, were appropriately spicy for the average pallette. The reason I wrote this review is because the next day, my friend and I both independently commented about how good the food was last night - that's a testament to the satisfaction of our order. With so many Asian options in HP, and my palette being taxed by lower quality Asian "fast food" in the area, I feel that this place stands out in terms of quality and value. I was sad to hear that Yu's Szechwan had closed, but cautiously-optimistic to hear that another Chinese restaurant was taking it's place. Yu's had some of my favorite appetizers. I'm happy to report that Jade Cafe has equally good pot stickers, egg rolls, crab rangoon, and Shanghai cold sesame & peanut noodles. My fiance and I both really enjoy their appetizers. I've had several of Jade's main courses, too, and they all ended up being quite delicious. Everything was well prepared, and was nicely seasoned - flavorful, but not overwhelming or too salty (a problem I have with some smaller Chinese take-out restaurants in neighboring Deerfield and Highwood). In particular; I enjoyed their ginger-lemon stir fried fish, diamond chicken, and the sweet sesame chicken. Their lo mein is particularly excellent - one of the most satisfying lo mein noodles to bite into, that's equally firm and soft at the same time, with a wonderfully rich and eggy taste. Their veggie lo mein and chicken lo mein were excellent, though the beef lo mein was tasted a tad gamy. Jade's veggie lo mein is now my favorite lo mein dish in a 5+ mile radius, beating out some quality competition. This location is really small, but the managed to put in a small dining area that is simply gorgeous. While there are a few things I still miss from Yu's, Jade Cafe has exceeded them in my opinion. While it's a little out of my way, most of the time, I'm willing to make the extra detour to get their excellent appetizers and lo mein noodles. read more

We used to go to Jade Cafe as a young family when they were on Elm Place and 1st street in HP. We loved the food and service there. It was a comfortable setting for a casual family meal. They were closed for a few years and reopened a while ago in a small storefront place on Central Ave. Hubby and I went to check it out. The food is the same great selection. I love my Singapore Noodles! It's not always on the menu at these types of places, so I was happy to see it the same as it used to be.... and just as delish! Hubby liked his too. So checkmark for the food. Service was fine too. Friendly and attentive. The place has only a few booths. Most all their business is delivery or pick up. So I get why they opted for a smaller place. It's not as comfortable being in such a small space, however, ,the booth was very spacious and comfortable. So not really much of a complaint. Just know what you are getting into when you decide to dine in. All in all, I'm glad to discover they are back and creating their same good consistent menu! read more

We moved to the Northshore about 2 1/2 years ago from out of state, and finding a good Chinese restaurant was an important task. We've tried perhaps half dozen Chinese restaurants in the Deerfield-Highland Park area, and Jade Cafe has become our favorite. Beginning with the won ton soup, I feel it's as flavorful as any I've had. I don't know why a little spinach and slices of pork couldn't make its into my bowl, but that's why I've rated the restaurant a four and not a five. My wife and I have different entrees as she eats vegan so we've had several items on the menu over time. I haven't had a bad entree; large portions and flavorful. While a minor item; I like the fact they've taken note we prefer brown to white rice, and don't need the condiments. Why don't Chinese restaurants in Chicago have shrimp chips? read more

Friendly take-out place with a small dine-in option (three or four booths, and a pair of al fresco tables). The stylish new decor is a nice touch. My husband and I ate in, and our hostess was very pleasant and attentive. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees. The edamame was perfectly cooked and salted. The scallion pancakes were delicately thin and crispy, and very good. A step up from most other places. The Governor's chicken (or whatever the equivalent of General Tso's is called) was prepared nicely - however, the chicken itself lacked freshness. Always a turn off when you can tell the chicken isn't fresh. But this is true more often than not for fried and sauced chicken dishes in Chinese takeout, unfortunately. The lemon ginger fish was pricey, but excellent. The combination of lemon and white pepper really brighten up the whole dish, and make the fish and broccoli really delicious. Would absolutely order again. Only complaint is that I think there should have been more fish for the price! Takeaway: Edamame, scallion pancakes, lemon ginger fish - all genuinely very good.
