    General Tsos Chicken

Lao Sze Chuan in Highland Park made for a fantastic Saturday lunch spot! We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by how easy everything was--no wait, immediate seating, and quick service from the start. The restaurant itself is cute, spacious, and has plenty of seating, making it great for both small groups and larger gatherings. We started with the kimchi, which was fresh, crunchy, and super refreshing. It was the perfect way to wake up our taste buds before diving into the rest of the meal. Next came the veggie spring rolls, and these were SO good. Crispy, hot, and even better when dipped in their homemade chili oil. Honestly, I could have eaten a whole plate of those alone. The hot and sour soup was huge and easily enough to share among four people. It was warm, comforting, packed with tofu, and exactly what you want on a cozy lunch outing. For entrees, the General Tso's chicken was a winner. The chicken was perfectly breaded, the vegetables were fresh, and the sauce had that delicious sweet-and-spicy flavor that keeps you coming back for another bite. We also ordered the house special chow mein, which was surprisingly unique because the noodles were crispy rather than soft. The texture was different in the best way, and the dish was loaded with vegetables and plenty of flavor. It was another great option for sharing. My only small complaint? I wish the dishes packed a little more heat. The flavors were excellent, but as someone who loves spice, I was hoping for a bit more of a kick. Overall, this is a solid spot with generous portions, quick service, and plenty of tasty dishes to share. We'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu!

Lots of Buy one get one free Ubereats Delivery only options ongoing now on UberEats delivery. May 9, 2026. My favorites are dry chili chicken, yang chow fried rice & cumin beef. Delivery so no ambiance review today. It's in downtown Highland Park with lots of free parking lots.

So I've been here maybe 5 yrs ago and I hated it back then. I read the yelp reviews and thought hmmm maybe I'll give it another shot. Man was I wrong. First of all the restaurant itself is pretty and calm looking. Our server was a very nice older lady and made me laugh because she reminded me of the character "Dude where's my car". Our server kept saying when she was taking our order, "and then? And then?" LOL. Anyway we started with pork egg rolls and pot stickers. The egg rolls were not good and the potstickers came out like it sat in oil for a day. Don't order this if you have GERD coz u won't be able to sleep after. Anyway, entree-wise we got the spicy chow mein with chicken. That was a dry chow mein noodle and was just odd tasting but that too was greasy. The other entree was the beef with vegetables and the beef was velveted to the point it tasted old. Ain't no way in hell would we ever go back to this! Unless you want to go into a grease coma, go here! As for me, no way!

Food is great and service is great. We ordered the mapo tofu, spicy seafood dry pot, soup dumplings, and dried chicken chili. Hot and delicious! My favorite was the dry chili chicken. So crispy and delicious.

This is one of the good Chinese restaurant franchises. If you like spicy Chinese food, just walk in if you see this sign. The place is clean, well decorated, with very good service. The appetizers came within the minutes. We had the spicy beef sliced and marinated cucumber, both are on point. First main dish was twice cooked pork. Thinly clicked pork belly with black beans, cabbage, and bean past. I'm a big fan of pork belly and I was in hog heaven. I surprised my son with lamb with white onion and basil, my hometown classic. He was completely blown away. Finally the classic string beans we all know and love needs no introduction. So if you are ever near highland park and is searching for 100% authentic food, drop by here!

Been to one or two of their other restaurants by the same name and surprised that the dishes were a bit different. Still, everything was good. Dishes came out fast while the restaurant was busy and a lot of take out was being distributed. Had kung pao tofu that was flavorful with peanut butter where were the veggies? Liked the vibe of the place. Parking was easy to find on the street. Will be back.

The xiaolongbao here were excellent -- delicate wrappers, rich and flavorful broth, and perfectly seasoned filling. Each dumpling was juicy without falling apart, which is always the sign of well-made soup dumplings. The balance between the savory pork and the light ginger notes was spot on. Definitely one of the better xiaolongbao experiences I've had recently. Would absolutely order them again.

COME FOR THE FOOD, STAY FOR THE SERVICE & AMBIENCE. THE SERVICE HERE IS ALWAYS WITH A SMILE; gracious and accommodating. Their Goji Berry, glutenous rice balls with sesame paste is out of this world! My mom loves the entire fish delicately steamed - healthy, flavorful, and not fishy at all. I love their garlic, sautéed spinach. A popular dish is the beef with wide rice noodles. If you can endure spicy food, the beef hot pot is explosion. The hospitality of all staff members is much appreciated.

Dry chili chicken, beef noodle soup, wontons

Amazing food, great service! Servings are big. We love the Dry Chili Chicken and wontons. Beef noodle soup and chicken feet are good too. Will definitely come back.

    Salt and Pepper Scallop

Google Review Our family's favorite Chinese restaurant. We come every 2-3 weeks if not more often. Our favorites are the Dry Chili Chicken, Tony's Three Chili Shrimp, Dan Dan Noodles, Fu Xi Fei Pian (Sliced Beef & Maw Szechuan Style - Cold Appetizer), Salt & Pepper Scallop, Chengdu Kung Pao Chicken, and Hot & Sour soup. The New Pickled Chili Beef Tenderloin is delicious as well! All these dishes are mildly to fairly spicy except for the Salt & Pepper (not really spicy, but crispy and delicious). If you like spicy this place is for you. If you like their signature Dry Chilli Chicken, they can make it in almost any other meat choice (beef, pork, lamb, shrimp, squid, etc). Also love the complimentary spicy cabbage appetizer. Free street parking and lot on the weekends is a plus. Taste is always on point and reminds me of the original Lao Sze Chuan in Chinatown square but without the traffic/parking struggles. Service is great too!

Food is amazing! service is the best! Whole family love this place and will definitely come back more often.

Both the service and quality of food has gone way down from what they were famous for. The waitress spilled my tea, also dipped her finger in my tea, had no apology or offer to exchange it with a fresh cup. I had to ask her for a fresh cup of tea. Then the other server that brought our entrees spilled my husbands tea and again no offering to getting a fresh cup. We had to ask AGAIN for a fresh cup! While the portions were generous, the quality of all the food has gone way down. The special family recipe of thier shrimp dish Gan Pong is nothing but fried shrimp with dried chili peppers and no flavor. The Hunan spicy beef and chicken appeared to be all globs and sticky because of excessive and over use of corn starch used during the cooking process. This dish didn't have any unique flavor that one would expect. Previously we had experienced a difference in the food, taste and quality and that's what kept us returning. Sadly, after this experience I wouldn't recommend it to anyone or come back! I'd rather stick with Yu's Mandarin than drive to this place! Quality always wins over quantity in my books!

To clear things up about their dining area, they have 2 small tables outside and 1 small and 2 big tables inside. Small tables - 2 chairs. Big tables - 4 chairs. On weekdays, you don't need to make a reservation. On the weekends due to their limited dine in area, I would recommend a reservation to be safe. You can make a reservation through Google/Yelp or phone call. Parking is easy since it's in a strip mall. There is also a 3% charge if you use plastic. Just a note, I tried looking at their food pictures on their website, but it kind of runs slow. Sometimes it would freeze. I think they need to fix it. I would return here to try other items. I would highly recommend ordering off their Malaysian menu instead of the miscellaneous. Don't order orange chicken or General Tao's chicken. Very cringe because you can get that literally anywhere. Get the Malaysian food because it's hard to find in Illinois. The owner is very sweet and the service is attentive. We ordered lor bak, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, hokkien mee, and kuih talam. Just a FYI, the portions are very generous. For 2 people, I would recommend ordering 2 dishes. Prices are reasonable for what you get. A pot of tea is $6. -lor bak 5 - I highly recommend this appetizer. It has crispy pork sausage with shrimp fritters, beancurd, and cucumber. It comes with two sauces. Everything was delicious. -nasi lemak 5 - I love the chicken rendang. The meat is very tender and it has a deep flavor. You can taste the spices that went into it. -Hainanese chicken rice 3.5 - I gave Penang Malaysian Cuisine a 4 because the rice was delicious. HD's version, the rice was not as moist and flavorful. The chicken was not bad, it's about the same as Penang's. It could be a bit more succulent without the sauces. -hokkien mee 4 - this won't be as tasty as in Malaysia. I liked the big pieces of shrimp, an adequate amount of sliced pork and hard boiled egg. The broth is still very good. If it's your first time having this, I still recommend it. -kuih talam 5 - I would suggest this if you like pandan. It's not sweet. It has a soft and bouncy texture.
