Golden Star is under new ownership and the change is for the better. We've ordered from Golden Star multiple times under the new owners and the food is much better. The chicken eggroll has the crispy texture with the peanut butter taste. The Mongolian deluxe is tasty with some kick. While there are a couple of places to sit and eat this is mostly take out operation. We are happy to have this "new" restaurant near by. read more

The only negative is I live and work out of their delivery range. No place to eat inside (pandemic related reason not their own fault) Had the Orange Chicken lunch special. And ate in my car. The chicken fried rice: its pleasant to bite into soft moist pieces of chicken, rice that was not al dente but just cooked to perfect moisture as mostly in general fried rice seem to be hard to bite into. This place how they seasoned it won't offend people. Its up to you to add soy sauce. It was not salty for me. The egg roll. Very flavorful and seasoned. I actually will crave this egg roll when I am back into the area during lunch hour. Negative part: Does not come with house made sauce. The orange chicken. Still Very crispy. Nice circus taste to it its not bland whatsoever and is actually made with white meat chicken. In love with this place as the menu actually had all fried dishes listed as white meat chicken too! Our favorite Chinese lunch buffet place closed recently, so my work group was looking for a new place to try. Although we couldn't find a buffet along the lines of our favorite one, the Golden Star reviews held promise. Five of us went, planning to eat in. We did this, but were surprised to find out that we pretty much filled the "dining area." This restaurant definitely caters more to a carry out business. Also, our meals were served in take-out containers, but since I was taking about half of mine home with me (large portions), this worked out just fine. The staff was very pleasant, even when I got a little impatient when I asked for a knife (forks, only, are standard) and it took a minute for them to retrieve one from the kitchen for me. My meal, the Cashew Chicken lunch special, was good -- I was able to customize it with only the veggies I wanted, and I loved that by default it came with fried rice. So many of the area restaurants consider fried rice a separate, add-on entree rather than a substitution for the white rice that often comes with meals. The chicken egg roll that's part of the meal portion was also very good. Soda (or pop as we call it) in cans was less than preferable. I wish they had an option for a 20oz bottle or a fountain dispenser. But I made do. I definitely plan to go back, although I'll probably do carryout and skip the small dining area, as it's just half of the main room, and the door opening and closing on a cold day as people came in to pick up their carryout orders made it a very chilly place. read more

I ordered the crab rangoon, shrimp fried rice and vegetable lo mein. My food was ready in about 20 minutes so I didn't have to wait a long time for it. I'm not very proud of myself, but I almost ate the entire bag of crab rangoon-SO FIRE. The shrimp fried rice? Even better. Very disappointed. We wanted to try out a different place for Thai takeout and found the orange-colored Chicken Pad Thai was so sickly sweet we thought it was sweet-and-sour chicken. The chicken egg rolls were slightly below average, and the fried pork pot stickers were average. They'd run out of the appropriate noodles for the Pad See Ew, so substituted thinner ones. Though there is one big table in-house for a family to dine at and a few stools, this place is intended for take out or delivery. I ordered a large chicken fried rice, chicken egg rolls and a small portion of peapods and water chestnuts with steamed rice. The order came to under $19. The chicken fried rice was enough to feed an entire family of four with leftovers. It was flavorful, but not a lot of chicken. The veggies were boring and I don't know if I liked the sauce they came in. The chicken egg rolls were just okay. Nothing to write home about. I will come here again for the chicken fried rice, though I still have some to finish in the fridge. I understand the lunch specials are the way to go and a great value. I'm a fan of cashew chicken, so I'm also curious to see what it's like from here. One good outcome, my fortune told me I'm talented and that one of my lucky numbers is 20. We order from here all the time- it's a great place for pick up. Our favorites are Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, Beef or Chicken with Broccoli and the Sautéed Broccoli. Their Hot and Sour soup is outstanding. The owners are very nice and I like that they call us when our food is ready. We ordered two dinners (most come with egg rolls and chicken fried rice) of vegetable egg foo young (gravy on side) and sesame chicken. The food was hot and delicious. However, the egg foo young gravy was left out of the order. I get it, it happens. I called to let them know and they said they'd bring it right over. And they did, within 10 minutes! It's always correct, always hot, and always tastes exactly the same as the previous order. In my opinion, that's as good as you can expect from American style Chinese food in the burbs. Golden Star is fast, they are conveniently located, and their food is A-OK. They're predominately a carry-out location, though they do have a small seating area as well. Their best Cantonese/American subgum dishes are their veggie-heavy dishes (Chicken Kow, Veggie Delight, Hunan Tofu, and Bok Choy & Mushrooms being my favorite). I can't particularly recommend any of their fried dishes - they aren't bad, but just unremarkable. They do prepare a really good combination fried rice, and above-average pot stickers (they have varied from A- to B+ in quality, from order-to-order). Golden Star won't knock your socks off with any of their dishes; but they offer some of the best quick tofu & veggie dishes for lunch or dinner, in the downtown Deerfield area, for under $9. read more

I was in the area for a client meeting which turned into an impromptu lunch. He decided to fly and buy and returned with lunch special from Golden Star, which he informed me he's a regular of. He got the Chicken and Vegetables which came with chicken fried rice, a egg roll and fortune cookie. The portion is very generous. We split the lunch and were stuffed. I love egg rolls but my client gobbled that in a flash- so it must be good. I liked the used white meat chicken chunks; fresh, quality,generous veggies; and was not too salty or greasy. I wish the fried rice was crispier and less sauce and carrots and had more peas. I just decided that THIS is my favorite neighborhood take out Chinese restaurant. We have made the rounds in the 2 mile radius around Northbrook Court, and this is as good as it gets. They should provide take out to PF Changs and maybe I would go back there again. Standard Cantonese style fair. BIG portions. Nice folks, and when they get to know you, they usually though in some complementary appetizer. I like the sesame chicken allot. The Mongolian beef is very good too. Try the vegetable pan fried noodles sometime in lieu of fried rice. Just take out only, there is no place to sit comfortably for dinning in, and there is no ambiance . I would say, if they would step up their protein quality, better chicken, better beef cuts, they could get some 4 stars. I'm giving Golden Star 5 stars with the given of its "genre"... which is take-out Chinese. Very un-fancy, no-frills, but DAMNED tasty! I waited to make a review until I'd tried 5 different dishes, so I could have some degree of confidence in my opinion. All 5 times, the food ranked "best in show", particularly given the price point: $6 for the lunch special, which comes with the entre, a heapin' helpin' of rice, and either soup or an eggroll. Their hot and sour soup is VERY good, and their won-ton and egg-drop soups are quite tasty as well. The lunch special portions are *quite* generous, and epecially if you get the hot & sour soup, the meal as a whole should fill up just about ANYONE, and then some. Their Szechuan and Kung Pao dishes are the spiciest I've ever come across... basically, it's as peppy as other places' "extra spicy". Quite the flavor explosion, I highly recommend those if you're a fan of spicy goodness. The turn-around time on an order is usually only about 10 minutes, 15 tops. The customer service is excellent: it's owned by VERY friendly couple, and they often have their baby daughter and young son in the shop with them. It's not nearly as obnoxious as it sounds... it's actually quite charming. Knowing that nice little family is depending on the place's success makes me really want it to succeed... thus my choice to actually write a review. Why I'm particularly elated about this place, is because it recently switched to new management... under the old management, the food tasted like a hot bag of ass. There are few things as disappointing as having a Chinese place right across the street from where you work, and having it suck. One other little side note... they have very limited seating (a counter that runs along one wall), so it's probably best to take your take-out out. (Yes, that does too make sense. I give you this info because *blink* and you'll drive right by it. It is literally across the street from the starbucks and Red Star Tavern, so be on the lookout when you see that coffee green giant What I love the most about Golden Star is that you don't get a crazy amount of food. Now you're probably thinking "so it's good i'm getting ripped off?" but their lunch specials all hover between $5-$7 dollars. I usually spend less than $6 for a mongolian beef or chicken with broccoli. I say this is a good thing because no one wants waste food, and no one wants to save four bites of rices and three pieces of chicken because the takeout they got was too big! That's why Golden Star's portions are just right. enough to satisfy the stomach and keep the body lean, and the wallet thick. Golden Star keeps a fine balance between being overly americanized chinese food and chinese style chinese foood. The difference between "american and chinese" is usually the amount of deep frying and funny words to desribe a dish (egg foo young? come on....) Generally speaking though, golden star's food is not very greasy, or rather, it wont make you feel like you ate a brick for lunch. For those working in Bannockburn, Deerfield or Highland Park, this little Star is truly a Golden nugget worth sampling for lunch. I order from Golden Star only because it is close to my work and I'm in the mood for Chinese. To be fair, this is a Cantonese style take out restaurant not Szechwan and not Thai. I don't know why they even offer Panang curry when they cook a traditional Chinese curry dish. Don't ask for spiciness because they won't listen to you. That being said, for Cantonese style food, they are still average but decent Cantonese food and the price is right for lunch time specials that include one entree with fried rice and an egg roll for under $8. The portion size for the lunch special is big and I can usually eat the lunch special for 2 days. The restaurant is really for carry out or delivery service but they do have 2 tables for you to eat at if you need. The service was quick and courteous. I really haven't found a good Chinese restaurant in the North Shore yet...still looking. read more

This is probably one of the best Chinese restaurant in Deerfield. The people there are so respectful and they are so kind. They are not stingy or frugal about the portions of food. They give huge amounts of food and I can't finish it with my boyfriend. I always call for DELIVERY because the guy that delivers the food is always fast and on point. Hr is also super nice and respectful. I think it is more worth it than waiting in the restaurant. You pay like 2.50 and the guy is literally there in like 20 mins and the food is still burning hot.
