After driving by this quaint little spot for years, we finally stopped in for a Friday night dinner. It was about 4:30 -so at the beginning of the Dinner cycle. I ordered the catfish dinner and CJ got chicken fried chicken. We both added a salad bar. (The catfish was on a banner on the road -making me think they were really good at catfish....) The chicken fried chicken was fair to good. She had green beans -and got a "slimy" bite at least a couple of times. My catfish was not properly fried. Very oily. The breading was heavier than I liked, but it seemed like the oil was too hot for the fry. I could smell the oil. I ate the first filet, but couldn't do the second one. I got Okra. It was fried so hard that I couldn't eat them. Very dark -again -smelled of "hot oil". The salad bar was fair to OK. The dressings were unmarked. Sorry to say I won't go back to Tonka Hills. I am hesitantly giving 2 stars -only because the little Latino server was a joy. She was upbeat. Smiled. Watched us and made sure we were taken care of. read more

I had driven past this place tons of times and finally decided to stop in. We were a group of 5 for breakfast on a Sunday. We were seated immediately by a very friendly server. We each ordered something different and each loved our meal! They were also setting up a buffet as we were leaving that had a combination of breakfast and lunch items. read more

My husband and I stopped in for lunch. I had a pork tenderloin sandwich and fried okra. It's not often you get a choice of okra, and it was delicious! I also really appreciated you get to choose between small and large tenderloin. My husband enjoyed a cheeseburger and fries. You could tell the hamburger patty was hand made. It was very, very quiet in there, like eating in a morgue. I guess there's a welcoming vibe when you look like a local. Chicken fried steak was decent but my Reuben sandwich was made with chopped meat and they forgot the thousand island dressing. Rueben 101 people!! Thursday afternoon/evening, wasn't busy when we went. Friendly service. We ordered 3 kids meals- all 3 liked their food. Ordered 3 regular meals chicken gizzards, tender roast beef & country fried steak. It was all great! Ordered 2 salad bars with the regular food- food bar had great selection. Revival of a classic family restaurant. Remember this restaurant from my childhood and luckily was reopened in Decemever 2019! They were very accommodating to my special dietary needs and made me something that wasn't on the menu and awesomely enough no upcharge! (That never happens at restaurants). We really wanted catfish, so we decided to give this place a try in hopes of finding a little diamond in the rough. Nope, we didn't. The food tasted similar to what you'd have at a school cafeteria. It's sort of tough to review this location, however I will share the experience I had. I was traveling in the area and my wife and I stopped in for breakfast as it was recommended by locals. I am always hunting down these type of establishments. When we walked in we were not immediately greeted which is understandable, since they had a help wanted sign out and understand the times were in. We were shown a table and sat down. I already had a strange vibe inside. The brunch Buffet selections were already out at 9 AM. They also had an omelette and waffle station. The omelettes were going to be made to order in their skillets. However, the waffle station was a selection of premade waffles that you selected out of the tray, heated them up, and put on whatever chocolate chips sprinkles and dairy spray you wanted. Not actually my style of a waffle station. I was also concerned how early the food was out for the brunch been 9 AM. Everything was not out, but it just seems strange to be out that early. They were obviously understaffed with one waitress working the entire dining room that we saw. Not a lot of people inside which is a red flag for me. Stopped at Tonka for a Sunday midday meal. Friendly staff and pleasant native American theme decorations inside. I had the large pork tenderloin sandwich with a side of fried okra. Nicely toasted bun with a crisply light breading on the tenderloin. Not pounded out 1/4 inch thick to make it appear larger either. Large thick meat was more than adequate. This was one of the best pork tenderloin sandwiches I've ever eaten and as a critical home cook I'm a hard sell! The fried okra was perfect much to the delight of my wife who loves it. Good meal at a decent price. Actually wanted their liver and onions meal but Sunday they have a brunch menu that doesn't include some items. I understand from friends that their chicken fried steak dinner is very good also. read more

All the charm you would expect from a roadside restaurant, complete with taxidermy on the walls and a $3.99 all-you-can eat salad bar. The service was fantastic as were the prices for the amount of food you get. I tried the BLT and it was just ok because the bacon tasted like the thin microwaveable kind and had little taste. The fries were delicious. My boyfriend tried the enormous pork tenderloin sandwich and loved it. This is a nice little stop if your are coming to or from attractions like Ha Ha Tonka park or Bridal Cave. I bet they have great breakfast, too. read more

Food is not good. The people are sweet and the customer service is good... cute Indian/Native American decor. Hate to say the food is awful because the people are so nice, but I have to say it: the food is awful. The eggs taste and look powered, bacon and sausage were rubbery, hashbrowns are mushy, coffee is bitter. Fruit is canned. Nice people but this is NOT a greasy spoon if that's what you're looking for. It's mediocre hospital food at best. It could be delicious if they used real eggs and better quality meat. read more

This is normal diner food, nothing special or terrible. We called in a carry out order. When my husband went in to pick it up a man who seemed to be a manager was standing right up front talking to another employee never acknowledging my husband. There were only a few tables of customers. After a server finally came out and went back in the back to see about our order he watched it set in the window for 5 minutes before someone actually brought it over. My order of hot beef was ok. My husband was asked how he wanted his meat cooked and said medium. He got well done. I'm very disappointed and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

In hindsight, the brown goop covered with marshmallows & sprinkles on the buffet should have raised suspicion. My mom ordered blueberry pancakes that weren't done (still batter!!), I sent them back for her, and they returned on the same plate, cooked but tasting of onions. Assholes! My only regret is that Shannon, the Hostess, has left to join her brother, Jason Whittle, former NFL player, in his real estate business here at the Lake. We eat here about 1 time a month, they have good Omelets, very large and fluffy, not the thin kind. The pancakes are good and filling also. We usually do lunch, they have a small salad bar, and we split the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, it is HUGE! Have not tried dinner, so I cannot comment on that, but breakfast & lunch are good! It would be better if the switched to non-smoking, even though 1 side is smoking & the other isn't you still are choked out by the smoke. read more

Good ' old diner. Was visiting my brother and went for breakfast. We got the buffet for $7.50. Eggs cooked to order w/ sourdough. Bacon, sausage, home fries and Chilula sauce. I will never go back here and waste my money. Service was awful. Couldn't get anything we ordered correct. Fried green beans instead of the fried green tomatoes, green beans instead of corn, etc... Then to add further insult, there was a deep fried bug on one of our plates as well as an expired sour cream packet. We all stopped eating at this point. When the waitress finally comes back to our table and asks if we want to go boxes, we adamantly shook our heads no and quietly showed her the issue of the bug. She goes and speaks to the owner who comps the plate with the dead bug only and never comes to apologize himself. Paid $35 for awful food we didn't even eat. The little we did eat before we found the bug was bland and gross. The ranch dressing was watered down. Do not waste your time or money going here! read more

My wife and I love the place. Nothing fancy just a good down home place to eat. (And yes, they have mounted animals and Indian artifacts on the walls if you like that) In the past we have taken the entire family with us and they accommodated us just fine for a busy Saturday morning. I have never ordered the buffet but breakfast off the menu has always been good. One word of warning, they close up shop for the entire month of December, I thought they were out of business. We tried the Tonka Hills for the first time this weekend. The food was good and a big variety on the menu. The decor is neat with the wall decor but the chairs and booths could use some updating. The restaurant seems to be smoke free now which is great and we did not have any challenges with smoke or smell while there. We will definitely be back and repeat customers. read more

Had the omelette to order my way, was very tasty, the hash browns I have never like anywhere were very crunchy. The wife had the tomahawk and she loved it. Both of us brought leftover home. Excellent food and service. My mom and I eat there at least 3 times a week. The only thing that would make it better is if the entire restaurant was non smoking, but at least half is non smoking.
