Tony's Diner doesn't look like much from the outside since it's tucked away at the end of a strip mall in Charlottesville, but don't let that fool you. We were greeted by Tony, the owner, as soon as we walked in and were seated immediately, which made us feel welcome right away. Our waitress wasn't especially bubbly, but she took good care of us. It may have just been her morning personality, and the service itself was perfectly fine. We stopped in for breakfast. I ordered the pecan pancakes with a side of sausage, and the pancakes were delicious. There were three large pancakes on the plate, so it was a great value. My husband had the French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, and home fries. The breakfast was classic diner fare, but the home fries were exceptional. One of the highlights was getting to chat with Tony when we paid. He shared a little about how he came to own the restaurant and some of his background, which added a personal touch. We also ended up talking with the regulars at the table next to us, and it was easy to see this diner has built a friendly community of loyal customers. The menu is extensive, with just about every breakfast option you could want, plus a wide selection of Greek dishes for lunch. First time at Tony's Diner and wow! We had to drop our original lunch plans and stumbled upon Tony's. They were able to get a group of 8 in a matter of minutes and had us seated. The service was quick, courteous, and very helpful. The food selection is vast so definitely ask the waitress from their opinions. I didn't give 5 stars because I found a gnat in my pancakes and the syrup seemed pretty cheap and flavorless. The restaurant was pretty nice for a diner, calm and not noisy. read more

I saw reviews that suggested this was the "Tip Tops of North c-ville". Only if you are local will you understand that, but I think they are near spot on with that suggestion. Family owned. Clearly a local's favorite. People were constantly rolling in. Clean and affordable. I got the "Michael's" Club Sandwich and my wife got the Chicken Souvlaki Platter. Both were excellent. Service was good. I look forward to returning and trying the breakfast menu. I saw more people eating breakfast at 12:30pm than I did lunch. The beer menu was is a little thin. No craft beers, just domestic offerings in bottles. I saw the owner walking around and checking and chatting with everyone. That is a good sign. read more

Michael's is my go-to when I need breakfast or lunch and I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Ambiance: think old school mom n pop style restaurant. If you aren't looking for something bougie and don't care for the not so up to date seating and decor, this is a great option. Service: the staff here are wonderful and the service is very quick. With Michael's, I know exactly what I'm going to get: from the second I walk in and am sat down, my order is taken, food follows within 10-15 minutes, and then the bill is left for whenever I'm ready to leave. And throughout this time I'm checked on for coffee and water refills. 10/10 service. Food: If you want bang for your buck then the All American Breakfast is a great choice. My favorite has to be the chicken souvlaki entree. Grilled chicken, salad (other options available like chips or onion rings) and pita bread served with tzatziki is delicious! read more

I love Michael's for breakfast in the Forest Lakes area. I tried the yogurt with honey and granola this time and it was very tasty! I also had a side of home fries which are big chunks of delicious potatoes. Their omelettes are also great with good portions of food. Their service is average. We stopped in for a work lunch on a weekday and they were rater busy, but we were promptly seated. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The menu is the large, Greek diner style menu, loaded with all the popular dishes you'd expect. Their salads were listed on a single page, but not very impressive, as I wanted a true Greek chicken salad and the best I could get was to ask for a large Greek salad with chicken breast added, but it wasn't the seasoned/marinated chicken that would be in Souvlaki. The salad was just ok, but generally boring and it needed lots of their house made Greek dressing, which was decent, but had lots of mustard in it. The other items the others in my party got they really liked, so when I come back, I'll probably get a sub or sandwich. The inside is nicely decorated and the restrooms are clean. This is a very good place to eat breakfast or lunch until 3 PM. The lunch menu is large and varied, including some really excellent Greek favorites. The breakfast menu is even larger, and usually available into the afternoon. For example, these folks make some of the best pancakes anywhere and served up with whatever sides you want. It is a comfortable, congenial place to relax and enjoy. Best of all is the fabulous service. The food is always served quickly and always hot, or cold, as required, and in generous portions. After several visits, I have yet to hear a server tell me "no" when I ask about getting something a little extra or different -- some combination of menu items not normally put together. Tony's is one of our regular places when we want a good meal at a very reasonable cost. read more

In town for the week and were looking a breakfast place and Michaels popped up around the corner from the hotel. The wait staff if very friendly and the food is pretty good. For the days we had breakfast here we had omelets, spinach and eggs benedict and Michaels special. The food and service did not disappoint, our coffee cups were always full, the dishes were plentiful and if you have the option between toast, muffin or biscuit, get the biscuit...good biscuits. The customer service was good. Friendly and attentive. I ordered the club sandwich. It looked amazing, unfortunately the bread tasted like cigarette smoke. I had a several bites to make sure. It wasn't through the entire sandwich...mostly just the outside. I didn't send it back as I was having lunch with a friend I hadn't seen since highschool and she was on her lunch break. I didn't want to make a fuss, others had given good reviews, and I don't live there, so I probably won't be back to dine there any time soon. I hoped it was an isolated incident. I have hesitated from even writing this review since I didn't bring it to their attention and give them an opportunity to fix it. My wife and I stopped in here for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The diner is close to the Charlottesville airport and the food is on par with New Jersey Greek diners with hearty, delicious portions at a reasonable price. Bill greeted us warmly and got us seated. Our server Bailey was exceptional - kind, engaging, and attentive, keeping our water, tea and freshly brewed coffee filed. Eating at Michael's was everything I expected from a diner. The service was friendly, responsive, and fast. My husband ordered the spanakopita. It was on the thin side, and came with a salad, and yogurt with cucumbers. He said it was a solid spanakopita (I didn't try it because he ate it too fast). My kids split the cheesesteak with the added veggies. It is very tasty and plenty for two small children. One thing I didn't expect was that it came with mayonnaise and shredded lettuce and sliced tomato. I ordered the tuna salad sandwich on rye - very good. They added mayo to it, which I didn't expect. At Michael's you can get breakfast staples (pancakes, eggs, and so on), giant sandwiches, or comfort food (meatloaf, steak, spaghetti and meatballs) at rock bottom prices. I opted for the Greek specialties since the family that owns Michael's is Greek...a gyro dinner with Greek salad. Delicious. Yes, I ate every bite and wished I had room left for some dessert (of which they have several).
