First I ordered an American sub, that is the name on the menu board. Guy rings up a club, as I learned when my name was called and the lady said club? I said no American. But I said I'll take it, (as I was hungry and didn't want to wait another 15 minutes.) get back to the office and open it up. Bread is burnt and the deli meat is all shredded. Could not even eat it. New ownership is awful and people working there do not seem to care. Went to Tubby's for years when Fragile family owned it. Will not be going back.... such a shame. read more

Popped in today for to go lunch for the crew. The place is clean, nothing special about it. Service was friendly and he shared a recommendation which I went with. Meatball Parmesan sub. We also had two Italian subs as well. Plus an order of their potato skins. The skins could have been crisper, but they could have steamed a little on the 6 minute ride back. However they were filled with the neon yellow cheese sauce verses shredded which would have been preferred I think. It was an impulse buy anyway. My meatball sub was overall disappointing. The balls themselves were healthy in size and didn't give me the frozen vibe, but they lacked flavor which was a huge disappointment. Not even the pickles could save it. Yes I know you're saying pickles on a meatball sub??? If you like pickles (dill), try it! The other guys were pleased with their Italian subs. This visit makes two for me and they're 50/50. The subs ingredients seem consistently fresh and the fries stay hot. My Co workers got the steak and cheese and burger. They both enjoyed each item. Tubbys is a great lunch spot. Not only are they cheaper than any chain sub place, but their food is also way better. Tubbys is one of those Charlottesville classic restaurants that's been around forever, so if you're from here you've probably heard of it or been to it already. We ordered the Italian sub and cheesesteak with fries for lunch today and it did not disappoint, it would so good we didn't have a chance to grab a picture before we are everything! It was a delivery order and the bread was still crispy, the portions were excellent and it definitely hit the spot. The old bay seasoned fries were the cherry on top. Definitely recommend topping your philly with some Frank's red hot if you choose to order one, but 10/10 we love this place and will always choose it over jersey mikes or subway. read more

Tubby's Deli & Restaurant - the outside of the building - Burgers Near Me - Charlottesville, Virginia

This is a special place. Tubby's is located on what my friends and I colloquially refer to as "Restaurant Road" which is the the stretch connecting the backside of downtown C'ville to Pantops. Other local gems include La Michoacana, Jak N' Jill's, Beer Run (kind of), Firefly, and the infamous Riverside Lunch. All (excluding Beer Run) have the same "back home feel" and really fit into the overall vibe that Pantops gives off. Entering Tubby's is like transporting back to an earlier time. Sights and smells are reminiscent of small-town burger joints; you know, the ones that probably have a gas station attached to them. The menu is broken down into subs/ melts/ burgers/ and then a whole second menu of "other stuff". Oh yeah, they have even somehow conjured up a spaghetti and meatball plate. The true glory in this place is not necessarily any particular sandwich, but in the overall experience. I can't actually describe it. I have tried the Italian twice (favorite so far), the turkey salami Swiss, and today the smoked ham bacon cheddar melt. While all of these sandwiches are fine, none of them have been outstanding by any means. They are what I would call "work day" sandwiches. I have yet to try the steak and cheese which I am assured is quite good. The real prize winner here is the fries. Very similar to Riverside, these fries are probably ordered from a purveyor of frozen goods, but somehow Tubby's makes these things addictive. Likely in part this is due to the copious amounts of seasoning (Old Bay?) that they put on them. They are skinny and stay crisp for at least an hour. Delish. The experience is rounded out by the ambience of the small venue. The employee who takes orders (same young lady for over the last year) has every choice/ option memorized when you order something that has options, and never actually looks you in the eye. All business. The staff in the back barely say anything except for yelling orders through the window every few minutes. The patrons are all sitting in small groups, whispering to each other about the woes of the work day and seemingly about how much longer they have to work before they can go home. This all changes when the food comes out. Smiles and again whispers, but this time with an air of relief, come pouring out. One man says "ohhhh yeahhh" so quiet I almost cannot hear it. But his face says everything. Silence ensues again. While the food at Tubby's is at best a high-par with the seasoned fries leading the wagon, there is nothing that can take away from the general feeling of goodness that slaps you in the face when you walk through the door. The sandwiches are fine. The fries are good. But the experience is one of a kind, and nearly impossible to describe. There is a reason this place has been open for 20+ years, and why the same patrons come back time and time again. Don't come here if you want the best sub or burger in town. You won't find it. Don't come if you expect the employees to cater to your every move. Come so you can order, sit down, eat, and then stare out the window and wonder why you are going to drive out of your way to come back here next month. I still haven't figured it out after my 4th visit. Oh, and per the review of another Yelp patron, get the honey mustard. There are two, but ask for the good one. They will know. Their chicken fingers and baked spaghetti are actually pretty good, too. Probably the only thing I don't like from their very extensive menu is their salads, which are made with iceberg lettuce. I guess we should have gotten burgers or subs but we wanted a light lunch. I was very disappointed in the average salads, one with grilled chicken. We also ordered spaghetti and meatballs for a child and got a large portion. I tried it and it was totally mediocre. Not sure is that was a ""meat"meatball Chicken and dumplings Special was probably from a can. It was served very hot which is great. But that was the best thing about it. Out of a party of 3, only one of us ate. And he was starving. The staff was efficient. I added a star when I saw the burgers which came to a nearby table. They looked great. Was so excited to see Tubby's open and was just told it was under new ownership. We ordered lunch to go for the family. Upon arriving home and opening we soon realized that the chicken(and all of the meat) was clearly not grilled but it had been microwaved. It was like rubber and you could see by the color of the food that had never been grilled. We called back and asked to speak to the new owner. A lady named Vicky refused to let us speak to him. She then proceeded to argue that they cook all the food on a grill. We offered to bring it back and let her see it but she did not want to see it. She just continued to argue that they do not microwave food when clearly this was microwaved. It's fitting that the new owner also operates a vacuum cleaner store, because this food sucks now. read more

Easy to find. Excellent food. I got the turkey sub and a small fry with a sweet tea. Lettuce could definitely be more fresh, but they do put a decent amount of meat so one outweighs the other. The only complaint I have is its not the most welcoming atmosphere. Seats aren't comfy and the lighting is all wrong. Not inviting at all. Tubbys is my favorite place to go in all of Charlottesville. I've been going there ever since it opened (which is probably 20 years ago). Great subs and great fries. Pretty good burgers. The bacon/ham/cheddar sub is my favorite. They have a cocktail style Ms. Pacman. That's awesome. My only complaint is that they serve Hunts ketchup instead of Heinz. Ugh. No respectable place should ever serve anything but Heinz. Things to know: 1. It gets super busy at lunch time. If you get there between 12 and 1 be prepared to wait, and to maybe not find a parking spot. 2. Monday night is buy one sub get one half off. That's a good deal. 3. If you don't like seasoning salt, be sure to request that they leave it off your fries. They put a lot on. And it's awesome. But it's not for everyone. Their prices have gone up a little over the years, but still reasonable, and about the only place I look forward to eating at when I visit Charlottesville. Very family friendly. No smoking. Tried this place for lunch. I liked the interior, but my only complaint was that the server behind the register didn't seem to want to deal with anyone. She seemed like she hated her job Outside of that, I had the steak and cheese based on her recommendation, and I heard they had good fries, so I tried those as well. This is a hidden gem for a good sandwich that costs less than most places in C-ville. I got the turkey club and it was excellent. It was so big it filled a big Styrofoam take-out container. The women running the counter were a bit coarse but they had a well-running operation. It looks like a hole in the wall so I never would have gone there if it wasn't recommended to me.
