I went there because my AC wasn't getting cold when it's hot outside. It was only getting cold in the mornings and at night. He told me my AC was contaminated and got mad that I didn't tell him we had recharged it before with something he said was incorrect. (Over a year ago) He used a word that I'm unfamiliar with. He said there is nothing he can do to help me. He had so much attitude! Wouldn't recommend this guy. I have known "Tony" at Tony's Auto Air for the last 20+ years and although I no longer have my 1995 Isuzu Rodeo, I recently picked up a 2005 Saturn Ion. My Saturn's air conditioner was blowing hot air and I had to to stop by Tony's on Artesian Street and see what was wrong . Let me start off by saying that Tony is one of the most friendliest auto-repair technician you will ever meet. Moreover, he is extremely skilled at auto-a/c repairs of all types and for ALL cars. His diverse repair skills also apply to many under-the-hood components that he is also skilled at repairing. When I picked up my car this hot afternoon, my 05 Saturn's repaired A/C was more than a breath of fresh COOL Air! As it turned out, it was a failing A/C Compressor which was replaced. The repair fee was fair and very reasonable and to top it off, Tony also replaced my Serpentine Accessory Belt as it was very worn. Ok ok why five stars. Honesty, integrity, professionalism, detailed knowledge and experience. And of course fair value. Tony is it and after seeing Honolulu Mercedes paid them $250 to diagnose the problem only to get a $5000 quote to repair. Well Tony cleaned out the lines from years of abuse by just topping off with Freon that built up air pockets and moisture. But as with many higher end vehicles the computer needs to be reset as well. Pretty simple basic fix. The price $250. Bottom line. Do not trust or go to Mercedes or others. Tony is the best. I was recommended a year ago by a friend but figured my AC was just shot. Not at all. I was so happy to find Tony's auto air. Tony was HONEST and efficient. My 2013 Kia Sorento AC has been giving me problems for a few years now. It would take 15 minutes driving to get cold and if I had to sit in traffic idling it would get warm again. I took it to the dealership while it was under warranty a few times and they said nothing was wrong with it. As time went on the problem persisted and got worse and I was afraid it was gonna cost me over $1000 to fix. I took it to Tony the same day I called, he had appointments available. He was quickly able to diagnose it and turns out it needed to be serviced (filter and recyarge). It was very inexpensive! He serviced it on the spot and was done in an hour. Now I don't have to dread driving my car this summer. It no longer gets warm when the car is idling. It gets cold faster, too. read more

I would not recommend you go to this place if your car ac starts blowing out warm air. He over charged me ( compared to all the other auto ac places) by about 150.00 and he took only 45 min to add coolant. Go to Chiks auto air on corner of liliha and kuakini. They do a thorough job of finding leaks, diagnosing, and they spend 3 to 4 hours. All the other places esp Tony's dont. read more

My AC went out in my 2008 scion, went to get checked and though the service is a bit expensive, Tony was very knowledgeable and informative, he provided me with options and the process if I wanted to proceed with any maintenance to be done. AC work is typically expensive. read more

I have been dealing with air conditioning problems on & off for the last few years ... sadly investing too much for quick fixes and never a real exact diagnosis or remedy until I got referred to Tony ... Called Tony and he scheduled me to drop car off for a free estimate ... immediately impressed with his neatness and organization of his shop. I got a call back within a couple hours and went in to meet with him ... he explained in layman's terms the problem and what he would suggest I do after also checking car out and thinking it would be worth the investment ... thankfully the estimate was cheaper than the estimate I got for another band aid fix ... so he ordered the part and a few days later brought my car in and voila .... air conditioning like when I first got the car :) so grateful to have Tony be our new go to automotive shop ... A voice of warning. My wife and I were looking for quotes our broken a/c. We came to Tony's looking for a estimate. There is a sign that states "free estimates." He was going to charge $490 for the broken a/c so we decided to go elsewhere. However he then proceeded to block our car with his truck and told us to pay him $175 for an "electrical diagnosis." That is included with every "free estimate" in Hawaii. We refused and he threatens to call the police. So we let him. We ended up getting our car back and forego having to pay this pirate who tried to shanghai the shinnanigans out of our lively hood. After this highway robbery gone wrong, we decided to never trust a local auto mechanic again. Ps we fixed our ac by watching YouTube videos and going to the near by O'reillys auto part store. Bottom line fix time 3hrs of my time and $50. read more

I was hesitant to go to this auto repair shop due to lack of reviews on any site on the web. But, I really needed my radiator fixed and didn't have a lot of money, and I literally just called places up and went with who had the cheapest labor rates and it was this guy. I am so happy I took a chance with this place. It is by far the best auto shop in Honolulu. I got in the same day I called, and the one worker that was there was really nice, and helpful. He gave us a pick up time and the car was ready right when he said it would be. He didn't over charge me and actually gave me tips on how to fix other small things myself so I wouldn't have to pay to get them fixed. Cheap, quick, and honest. I love this place and will be taking my car there anytime I need a fix. =] read more

As noted by the other poster's...I agree, Tony's Auto Air is awesome. I first met Tony 3 years ago...I was having issues with my AC system on my 95 4-runner. He diagnosed the issue as costly and instead of trying to convince me to spend the $$$, said I should just leave it as a beach car...I agreed. He didn't charge me at all for that visit... I recently took my 2005 Forester XT to have the Freon Evacuated...I then changed out the AC Compressor myself and took it back to have the system once again evacuated, then re-charged with the Freon...the proper way to complete the job. Most people would have let the Freon out into the open air and contaminate the atmosphere, thus saving themselves the evacuation fee, but he said that whatever Freon he took out would be replaced, saving me the additional charge of Freon upon recharging the system. When I went to pick up the car, he noted and explained to me that the belt that I replaced had skipped a track and was creating a whining, squeaky noise...he assisted me in re-aligning the belt, again, with no additional charge. Top notch guy that really knows his AC system...highly recommended. I am the co-president of SubyLife - a Premier Subaru Club here on Oahu...we have highly modified Subaru's and show our daily driven cars regularly. Tony seems to be very knowledgeable about cars. I just bought a used car and asked him to take a look at it because I feel a little iffy about the car. He took every complaints that I had seriously. He charged me $50 for the whole session, including lifting my car to check the problems. One thing that I like about him is that he gives recommendations on whether or not to fix something. Tony is great. He has been working on our family's car for years. His shop is very clean and he is very organized. My mom once bought a battery from him and he had the purchase records on file so when it died earlier than warranted, he filed a claim and she got a check forward weeks later. Great businessman! Tony is my go to auto guy. I found him years ago because he was located across the street from my office. However, he was not the first person I went to when my ac was broken...although I should have! Broken ac and all other places suggested or gave me freon recharges, which was a temporary solution that would last days. When I finally went to tony, he found that my valve had a crack in it. Thank God this guy knew what he was doing as I was about to completely give up on ever having cold air again. He was honest, quick, and affordable. His shop is nice and neat and that tells me a lot about his work ethic. He's also open on Saturdays and always calls you after the job is done...he's always been able to do 1 day repairs for all my car issues. I drop if off early morning and he's done by closing! He doesn't just do a/c and does most everything but he will also honestly tell you his limits and refer you to the right place. He's a one man shop and is a Hard worker, friendly, and skilled! I would leave no stars for this guy if it was possible. I have been the service manager for two different car dealerships here in Hawaii and I have never experienced a ripoff job like this one. My friend Dodge takes his 2000 Ford ranger in to get the fuel pump replaced and they quote him $800+ for parts and labor!! Are you kidding me? The Ford dealership doesn't even charge that much! So to try to save some money my friend orders the part himself from O'reilly's and the part only costs $274.81 out the door! He then takes the part over there for them to put it in and then they tell him that the connector is wrong even though we ordered the part by VIN#. They tell him that the "correct" one needs to be special ordered from the mainland and has to be shipped in. What a scam. So by this time my friend is really pissed and tells them just to put the car back together and he will take it somewhere else. Then they have the balls to tell him that it's going to cost him $400 to put the fuel pump back in his car. So basically they are going to charge him $400 to not repair his car!! This is the worst service shop I've ever encountered and I personally know a lot of mechanics and service shops on this island but this one takes the cake. My friend was never given a written quote or estimate nor told what the parts or labor cost breakdown would be. He never signed a single piece of paper saying that he authorized them to do any kind of work. This is a classic example of why people don't trust mechanics. Long story short I would avoid this guy like the plague since obviously he is not a professional repair shop that does everything legally. read more

I have an old Mercedes, and the A/C has been slowly dying. Took it in to Tony, he asked if I wanted to wait for a while. Hooked it up to his machine, while I made some phone calls, and in about an hour - ice cold A/C! Said I might have a small leak, so he put in some dye, so if I had a prob the dye would show where. My AC began leaking over the weekend (Saturday) and I did a search for AC repair in Honolulu. After calling several places that "were supposedly open" and getting nothing but answering machines, I called Tony's and got an answer. He told me to come on over and he would check it out...no waiting! He diagnosed the problem and said he could get the part in on Monday for repair. I setup the apt for Tuesday morning 8 O'clock first thing. He had it all repaired and recharged in less than 3 hours while I waited in the local area. He's a one man show and is highly talented. He also has a nice clean shop, so I knew this was a legit place for repairs. He did an outstanding job for me and I was happy that I didn't have to call around looking for spare parts as he did all the foot work for me. I just showed up and he did the job. I recently moved here from the mainland, and needed to buy a car. I used Yelp reviews to find mechanics near the used cars that I was looking at. Tony happen to be close to where one of the used cars was, so I set up an appointment with him to check over the car. Tony was great! It turns out that the car was worth a lot less than what they were asking because of issues, and Tony suggested what I should offer for the car, but the dealership that had the car was unwilling to come down and meet the price, which told me that they were not being very honest. I kept looking for other cars, and ended up having Tony look at two more. For one of them, Tony called me within 15 minutes and told me he was done. I asked him if he was sure, because that was a really short period of time, but he had me come back to the garage anyway. When I got there, he told me about the undercarriage of the car being all rusted out and told me not to buy that car. I'm so thankful I had him look at it, because it was my top choice, and saved me from wasting all of that money. In the end, I bought the third car that Tony looked at, and took it back to him to fix the air conditioning, fix some of the belts, and take off an aftermarket car rack that was on the top. Tony did a great job, the car is running smoothly, and the air-conditioning is running nice and cold now (after a week of sweltering in the recent heat wave!). I'm going to be taking the car back to Tony in December for a transmission flush, and in about a year for the timing belt to be replaced. Tony can definitely take care of any kind of car related issue - not just air-conditioning. Tony is such a nice guy, and will definitely look out for you! Highly recommended! read more

After 30 minutes I got a call back with some ridiculous prices and when I said let me think about it, he said "come get your car in the meantime". Maybe Tony's is good on a/c but is bad on auto repairs. On Sunday my car started to overheat so after reading the reviews on here and because Tony's is close to my home. The next day I took my car to him and he looked at it and said that he could fix if he could get the parts. Later that day he called and said that the parts were on their way and that I could pick up my car the next afternoon. The next morning Tony called and said that the a/c wasn't working for appox. $200 more he would fix it. I paid and picked up my car that afternoon and everything was fine for 1.5 miles then the engine light came on and the car started to overheat again. I took the car back the next morning he didn't even look at it and told me to take it to an EXPERT. The a/c works great but what good is it if I can't drive the car without it overheating. the anti freeze bottle drains empty over night and he doesn't want to fix the problem or make a small refund on the bill as he didn't fix the original problem but only made it worse If I could post this review without stars I would, I would not send anyone to Tony's Auto Air. read more
