Curry chicken served with rice, stewed veggies and plantains
    Chelsea W.

If you're in the mood for Caribbean food and in the New London area, a trip to Tony's Caribbean Kitchen is a solid choice. Tony's is a no-frills counter service establishment with minimal seating inside. I would recommend getting takeout as there was no A/C running on this hot 80 degree day, making the inside stuffy. Moving on to the food, it is prepared in large batches and served cafeteria style. Don't let this deter you, it's delicious! When a food item sells out, you're out of luck until the next day because it is not prepared at the time of order. Starting with our lunch orders, we had the Curry Chicken Stew and the Oxtail. The chicken was so tender it fell off the bone. The curry flavor was not overwhelming which complemented the rice and veggies perfectly. The Oxtail was also braised to perfection. The meats were served with red beans and rice but white rice is available for the less adventurous. All plates come with plantains and a stewed vegetable, we had the cabbage today which was scrumptious. Overall, super happy with our lunch picks. The reason I am docking a star from this review is because as I mentioned, the interior is not very comfortable or inviting. Also, do not expect five star customer service as the emphasis here is on the food not the customer experience. Additionally, posted menu did not reflect the actual dish prices. We paid $2 more per plate. Despite it's downfalls, I will definitely be back for more delicious Caribbean cuisine in the near future.

Amazing food. Small, takeout spot. The curry & jerk chicken are our favorites. Good portions & staff is always very nice.

Delicious goat curry, and the portions are very filling. There's not much spiciness but it's a great flavor.

Vibe was off as soon as we walked in but decided to give it a go anyway. Btw around 6pm on a Friday. Only one server who seemed new and was doing everything by herself. We then decided to order and the first she said was "oh we are out of this and we are out of that." Flag! Not busy at all as a matter of fact only a couple of people inside and 2 at the bar. Then when I ordered pollo guisado she said "oh I'm sorry we are out of that too.." I said ok bistec then and my brother ordered the same with the rice n beans and a side order of tostones.. everything was bland rice, beans, and especially the bistec. No flavor whatsoever. And the Bistec although bland tasted like it was old and had a weird taste to it. My brother agreed. Simply horrible! The only 2 things that were good was the tostones and the parcha juice! That was it definitely NOT worth the money at all. If you go again expecting how it used to be well prepare to be disappointed to say the least. You will see. Sad.

Every bite tasted homemade and authentic. Definitely one of the best mofongo dishes I've had. The portion size was generous, and the sauce tied everything together perfectly without overpowering the dish. You can tell real care went into the preparation and presentation. I'd absolutely come back for this again and recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Puerto Rican food.

I ordered my favorite Jamaican dish, the Oxtails. I've had Oxtails at half a dozen Jamaican places, the Oxtail here is the most flavorful I've had, amazingly delicious! The portions are perfect. Other Jamaican restaurants are typically take-out places, fast casual instead if sit-down dinning, they do tend to give more meat but they weren't as tasty as this. I also loved the fact that I got both rice & plantains! The young waitress was the daughter of the owner & she was super friendly, chatty & genuinely a nice person. Thanks for the chat & a wonderful dinning experience. I promised to share some photos of the tractor, so here they are.

But my husband and I managed to sneak away for a dinner, just the two of us, and I was so excited to get to try Miss Penny. We will 100% be back this place did not disappoint! First of all the daughter of the owner and chef was one of the most lovely people. She was just perfect! She welcomed us so warmly and took the time to explain everything on the menu when we were new to Jamaican food. She gave her recommendations for the different fruit juices and what to try on the menu. When my husband with a more adventurous palette tried the oxtail. She was giving him tips on how best to eat and enjoy it. She was so helpful and made the whole experience perfect. I loved the more upscale setting with the white tablecloths and the beautiful dish ware, which made it feel like a nice date spot. I'll be back! I hope this restaurant stays for a long time in Manchester! We started with the jerk chicken eggroll, which was very yummy. I just wish there was a little side of the extra sauce that was d drizzled on top as that was good and I would have liked a little bit more. I'm sure I could've asked for some, and they would have provided it. I ordered the Rasta pasta with jerk chicken, and it was the most perfect flavor and taste. It did have a little bit of spice, but I like spice! And the owner's daughter made sure to let me know so it wasn't a surprise or anything. The chicken in the pasta was nice and tender and I'm picky with chicken. My husband really liked his oxtail, but I'm not adventurous so I didn't try it.

We continued to give them glowing reviews and recommend them to a number of our friends and colleagues. Last week, my wife's family was visiting us from out-of-town. We wanted to take them all out for a nice dinner and thought that we would surprise them with a visit to Island Cho. We really hyped up the restaurant to them and told them that they would love the food. We arrived a little bit before 6:00pm. We were seated right away and there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. After we had all looked over the menu, our orders were taken. So far, nothing unusual. Our drinks/water were not delivered to the table soon after we ordered. We thought this was a little unusual and that perhaps they would be brought out when the food came out. The drinks arrived to our table about a half hour after we ordered, but the food did not follow. We noticed another family came in and were seated around this time. After a short while, they looked visibly upset and got up and left with no explanation. My two young children were very hungry and we were doing our best to keep them occupied. My wife's family asked us if the food normally takes this long, to which we replied, "No, it's very unusual." Nearly an hour after we ordered, the owner/server brought the "Caribbean Wings" (one of our favorite appetizers) to the table. We thought that the rest of the food would be coming shortly after, but before we knew it the wings were gone and we were waiting once again. At this point we debated just paying for the drinks/wings and leaving, but then we would have to find a new restaurant to wait at. We decided to just cut our losses and continue waiting. We also attempted to ask someone how much longer the wait would be, but no one was even at the front counter anymore. Approximately an hour and a half after ordering, the owner returned and said that the rest of the food would be brought out in "five minutes". We brought up that we had two young children who were very hungry and asked why the wait was so long. He informed us that there was only one person working in the kitchen and then he sped away. The owner eventually returned with the food, but only two plates. It was another 5-10 minutes before any other plates were brought out. My wife told the owner, "We're still waiting for my older son's meal and you still haven't brought out the Shrimp Wontons that we ordered." The owner informed us that the aforementioned wontons would not be coming out because they were out of them. My wife asked why we weren't informed of that when we first ordered them. He replied, "We didn't realize until we were about to make them." My poor son sadly kept on saying, "Where's my plate? Where's mine? I'm so hungry." He eventually received his food, but at this point he was so tired that he couldn't even finish it. We decided to just cut our losses, finish the food that was brought out to us, and then settle the bill. The whole experience was well over two hours and we were leaving well past our sons' bedtimes. My wife and I took our sons out to the car while my sister-in-law settled the bill for us. When she came out, she told us that the owners informed her that none of their kitchen workers showed up due to bad communication, etc. She also said that they didn't exactly apologize for our poor experience but rather gave a long list of excuses. My wife and I were SO EMBARRASSED for hyping up Island Cho to our family. We realize that the restaurant industry is not an easy one and that problems arise at the drop of a hat. That being said, we feel that the owners of Island Cho handled this bad situation VERY POORLY. The least that they could have done was give us a heads up when we first arrived. "Hey, we're very sorry but we are short-staffed tonight. You can stay if you wish but it's going to be a long wait," or , "We're very sorry but due to unforeseen circumstances we're unable to accommodate your party." Nope, we received no warning at all. They deducted the items that we didn't receive, but there was no apology or any sort of discount for our poor experience. Although the food was just as delicious as it had been on previous experiences, it was just a little bit too little and too late. After getting home, we found that several patrons have shared similar experiences to ours over the past six months or so and voiced them on both Yelp and Google. We don't see how Island Cho can continue as a business much longer if this sort of bad service and bad management persists. Although we love supporting local businesses (especially family-owned), we cannot in good conscience continue to recommend and support Island Cho. We will NOT be returning again.
