It's June 19th on a Friday night. It's not busy whatsoever. There's literally 2 table's including mine. I went with my husband for dinner and I was hoping our favorite waitress will be there but nope we got this other one. Homegirl find a new job, waitressing is not your calling. Look she was nice but by far the worst service I have ever received. And mind you I'm a waitress myself. I shit you not I've never experienced that. She dropped our food, NEVER came back to ask how it was or if we needed another drink. Our glass was empty we tried stopping other people but they idk forgot about us. Not trying to sound like a Karen or anything. But I'm telling everyone and their mama to never come to this establishment again. Also I left no tip and I never do that but it was that bad. read more

The food here was pretty solid. I don't have any complaints. I think my biggest complaint is that with regards to Peruvian food the menu is a bit limited. Additionally, I was surprised that they were using tilapia for their ceviche. Tilapia is such a dirty fish for where we're located I really think they could definitely come up with a better substitute or just simply use Corvina as it should be. read more

We recently visited New London's only Peruvian restaurant, CJ Peruvian aka Pollas a la Brasa! They told us they recently expanded, and the bar/dining room area was beautiful. Though they were out of a couple of items on the menu that we were interested in, the waitress was quick to come up with suggestions of other popular dishes. We decided to get an appetizer of salchipapas - though simple, we've just never ordered it before and wanted to check it off our list! My fiancé loves a good Pisco sour and was very happy with the one here. The rotisserie chicken was moist and flavorful served with a delicious side of beans, and I enjoyed my beef with pesto pasta. Hadn't been back since Covid to one of our favorite restaurants. Knew they did a renovation and what a change! Twice the space and now a full bar. Husband enjoyed excellent, large pisco sours with his favorite dinner. My chicken with pesto noodles sadly no longer on the menu but the steak with noodles was a good substitute. Both dinners were large and I have leftovers. Prompt and pleasant service. Still great food plus a bar...can't go wrong and will be back soon! read more

Came here last week since I was in the area. The restaurant was empty. The employee was busy cleaning tables. They have it set up pretty well to enforce social distancing. Coming into the store they have the area to the dining area blocked off and it's pretty much one way in and out. The front area leads you to the bar/cash register area. We ordered a whole rotisserie chicken. It came with a large amount of white rice, pint of beans and a couple of red sauces and green sauces. The chicken was 5/5. Very tender and juicy. The beans tasted pretty good. Maybe 4/5. The green sauce was a bit disappointing because I was expecting the green sauce from Pio Pio in NYC. But still pretty tasty. 3/5 for both sauces. We also ordered 2 orders of the sweet plantains. 5/5 And an order of chicken chaufa. Chaufa is basically fried rice. But I found the chicken and the scrambled eggs to be extremely dry. It was about 2/5 The purple drink is delicious. It was served w/o ice (bonus points for me) so you get a lot more drink for the money. It had a hint of cloves and reminded me of Trinidad sorrel. 5/5 The total came to $50. It fed the 4 of us. Next time is like to try some of the seafood. Hear that it gets rave reviews! read more

Loved the food, menu variety, and service here! The staff was kind and the food didn't take too long. All their signature juices and food was delicious. I ordered the Pollo Saltado CJ and it was super yummy and a big portion. It was really easy to make a reservation for my large party and the waitress was very accommodating. There is lots of room inside so big and small parties alike can dine. Overall, a very good place for Peruvian chicken/food and one of the best places I've eaten in Groton. read more

On our eternal quest to pokeman all the restaurants in the area ( gotta eat em all!), we stumbled twice upon Pollos Ala Brasa. My exposure to Peruvian food was somewhat limited to some mediocre to decent Peruvian joints in Sonoma county, but nothing to blow up my skirt about. On my first bad cold in Connecticut, I begged my darling husband to find me some soup. Upon my urging, he returned from Pollos with a chicken cilantro soup with peculiarly shaped meat items that were so strange that we called them mystery meat. The soup base itself was good, but with my overwhelming uncertainty on what exactly the meat came from, I quickly lost my appetite. On our return trek with another couple, we were ready to try something different and all steered clear of the mystery meat soup which ended up being chicken gizzards. We started with chicha morada, the traditionally spiced purple corn drink, and yucca fries. The sauces the fries came with were amazing, but the fries themselves were unremarkable and sorely undercooked. For our main courses, we sampled the pollo saltado, lomo saltado, bistec encebollado, and the pollo milenesa a la pobre. We were all surprised with the gigantic sizes, but the pobre was the largest...which left over three days of lunches after my husband put a significant dent into it. I was sad to have eaten too much to have room for flan, but on my return trip I plan to try it and the garlic shrimp entree. We had a long wait to order and be all served despite a somewhat unbusy evening. Also the waitress didn't know what the sauces were that she served us or what was in them which was discouraging. Overall a good food experience with large portions and a vast menu, but you should probably speak some Spanish to get through it because the servers aren't equipped to guide you through it. Will definitely return to give the menu a thrice over. read more

The aquadito de pollo is my absolute favorite soup for when I am feeling cold or sick. The service is fairly quick, food is ordered and on the table quickly. Customers can also choose to order over the phone for pick-up. I do this often when I'm sick and want the soup. read more

This Peruvian restaurant is a very casual mom and pop business. It's not very large and the inside contains roughly ten tables. Empty seats are hard to come by on the weekends because it does tend to get busy on those days. The food is good. It's typical Peruvian fare so that means lots of chicken, beef, and carbohydrate items are on the menu. Peruvian food reminds me a lot of American food, but instead of meat and potatoes there's a lot of meat and rice. Not a whole lot of greens. Oh, and french fries are popular too, just like in America. I've had several of their dishes, including beef, chicken, and fish. The fish was civiche. For those that might not know civiche is basically cold fish that's been soaked in lemon/lime juices for a very long time. I like Peruvian food. I may not love it, but I do like trying their different dishes. Two types of hot sauces are available if you wish to spice things up. Their green sauce provides a nice burn. Prices are OK. They're not bad but some of the seafood items are a little pricey. Seafood can be like that. Portion sizes are pretty large and one portion could actually feed two people. read more

Stopped by here on our way to Long Island from Mystic. Opted for this place due to great reviews since, they claim that this place has the best chicken. Ordered the famous chicken and, to my surprise the server said that there's no more chicken..." Whatttt" your signature dish and you are telling me you don't have it.. So I settled for the Chicharron de Pescado which it was good.. The server was horrible, has no attention to guests and I had to ask her for a cup with ice five times. The place was half empty so there was no excuse for them to take close to 30 mins to prep our dishes. They served me a side order of Maduros which were raw.. Wow. What a find! Thanks yelp for pointing it out! Really close to the coast guard academy if ur there for an event. This is an authentic Peruvian spot. We r the only non-Peruvian here for the lunch this Saturday. ;-) The Inka Kola is a nice change of pace from Pepsi/Coke products. A unique bright yellow color but delicious. The passion fruit is a terrific juice. The half chicken is generously sized and up nearly instantly served. It is so tender and juicy. Yet the skin is crispy and delicious bThe beans r good and the hot sauce is super flavorful. The ambience is great. I could almost imagine being in Peru. We had the weekend special soup as well Paslaca (so.) which was also delicious. With beef, tripe and who knows what else. If u like tripe then u will like this. If I could give this place zero stars, I totally would. I live up the street from this restaurant/bar and all they do on Friday. Saturdays and Sunday nights is played loud, freaking music and have drunk people all over my street. And yes I know I live on a main road but to the point where I have to wear earplugs all the way up to 3 o'clock in the morning just so people can go in and enjoy the loud thumping music is fucking ridiculous, if I could give restaurant/business 80 star, I totally would to the fact that they are playing loud music and also a residential area where hard working women and men are is utterly ridiculous. This is so fucking annoying. I am so tired of it and into the fact where they have drunk people all over the place and then at 2 AM they just happened to drive their cars and cause accidents at the street and also possibly a couple of past months, the gas station was lit on fire, so which is right across the street from this restaurant/bar . read more

Found this hidden gem while visiting the beach nearby.  As others have noted from the front it doesn't look like much.  It's a pretty small place inside.  The food was fabulous tho. Was in the area on business and I love Spanish food so I gave this place a try. I ordered a bunch of things to try for takeout, and overall I liked it and would eat there again. The place is a hole in the wall, and if you're driving too fast you just might miss it (I did). There is street parking before the place, and parking in a rear lot (found that after). It's a cute little spot, a bunch of tables, Spanish music is playing, smells delicious. The staff was so nice. Onto the food, tried the cevichon mixto, chicken fried rice, and plantains. I really did enjoy the cevichon mixto, a blend of fried and non fried seafood. The ceviche portion was delicious, perfect lime, salt, cilantro balance, and a mix of squid, fish, shrimp, mussels, and clams. Not sure what fish they use, but it's the wrong fish, and needs to be a softer texture, but it's all delicious. The fried portion is really good too, better than I expected, and it comes with fried yucca (yumm) and sweet potato. Plantains in the side were delicious, loved them. The Peruvian chicken fried rice was interesting, and it had what I love and expect in any good fried rice: good rice, lots of meat, scallions, lots of egg, and bean sprouts. The interesting part is the cilantro, and while I love cilantro, it doesn't go with this dish, and there is a lot of it. I liked and didn't like this dish, but hell I still ate it. SO GOOD. The sailor and I went there tonight. He had chicken/steak rice and I had the fried pork chop with white rice, fried sweet plaintains, and yellow beans. All fried items were fresh and done to order. Everything was fresh, the sofrito like base was extra fresh. The waiters were extremely sweet and considerate. Prices were great and portions were definitely generous. Parking was a little weird as the parking lot is dark; but hey that didn't affect how good the food was. I've never had Peruvian food before, but I must say there is heavy Asian influence. It's like having the best of both worlds! Also, people have referred this place as a whole in the wall; that's sort of mean. The owners are really trying to improve the decor and keep things really clean. It's not gonna be styled like Applebee's; it doesn't mean the place is dirty or "hole in the wall" - it makes it unique and cultural. read more

I travel frequently between Portland ME and Long Island, NY. Depending on time of day the ferry through New London isn't always the best choice due to cost and no time savings, however, once you find this gem you'll take the ferry every time. Newly renovated so it doesn't look like a mom and pop shop anymore, but the charm and friendliness of the staff hasn't changed, so it still feels like one. I haven't eaten my way through the whole menu yet, but look forward to one day making it all the way. Obviously the chicken is great, but some my favorites which should not be missed are the -Cevichón Prescado (half fish ceviche and half frito mixto, mostly calamari). -Yuca Rellena. A variation on the potato classic that actually beats the original. The creamy texture on the inside and super crisp crust can not be replicated, not even with potato. - Ensalada Criolla. As much as you might like onions, I am sure you didn't think you could eat an entire salad made from pretty much only onions, we'll meet your new bestie. Put them on everything you order from here! . I also HAD to have cilanto and red onion salad in lemon juice, and we added a side of beans. Both bombtastic. I need to be a spokesperson for Peruvian chicken. There is no other cuisine that has mastered the art of chicken. None! Flavor to the bone, soft and moist (sorry,I also hate that word). The seasoning on this bird was a little fancier and extra delicious. If you're wondering why I'm being stingy with the last star. It's because they became experimental with a Peruvian trademark, the Aji Verde (green sauce). It's a fraud, and I was so disappointed. This could easily be a five. My first time at a Peruvian restaurant and it was a delicious heaven. I just tried the vegetarian dishes though, yet they were very good. The vegetarian fried rice had a unique flavor. The beans (side dish) were very flavorful. Highly recommend those. The dessert was also good !!! Loved it. The service was just fantastic.
