Let's start with the good. The waitress was excellent! They have a large menu and the prices seem fitting with portion size. The portions are large. The food is meh. We ordered a 3 piece fish and chips to share. The coleslaw was tasty and ample. The fish were very large pieces, but not the best tasting cod. Meh. The fries were horrible. Looked like the grease was old, so definitely dark brown, but not crisp. There are 2 things that made this a less than event. The cashier! She was snippy and just not nice. The 2nd thing was that we were charged .75 for an extra plate! Now, it isn't that i mind the charge, but we were not made aware of it when we ordered. This place is a classic throw-back dinner that has been here since probably before I was a teenager, not sure how long, but it is a literal institution for cheap food- big portions. This is really only my second time here, even though one would think this would be the place I come to often. I went once many years ago as a young adult, this time, with one child. I love the old timey feel of a classic dinner, with 80's music, almost like being on a movie set or a theme park. There are so many items on the menu, it is very hard to choose. We went with the club sandwich ( I love a club, so it is something I often order everywhere), some fries, side of ranch, a Pepsi Zero (wish they had coke), some sort of berry tea drink, torpedo shrimp with mashed potatoes, and clam chowder, the peanut butter pie with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle, and the red velvet cake. The server was extremely nice and efficient. She went out of her way the entire visit to get us our drinks just right, checked in on us countless times, and asked what else she could get or bring to make the meal great. I wish I remembered her name, but she was amazing. The meal was good. The food here is not the best ever, but it was tasty. The chowder was nice, and it was pretty cool that they had both New England and Manhattan chowder. Most places only have New England. But since my child has never had chowder before, we ordered New England. She liked it overall, but does not necessarily want to order it again, but I liked it. (Maybe she is not a chowder person). The shrimp and potatoes were great. They also had a nice gravy for the potatoes, the potato portion was huge. But what really was huge was the club. It really looked like a pound of turkey and a pound of bacon (especially since they are known for their bacon). I got a side of mayo since it was such a large sandwich. It was so huge, it took a few people and several days to actually finish it. One sandwich is like three or four big sandwiches. The fries were good and so was the ranch. We also enjoyed their desserts. While they did not look as big as the sandwiches, each piece took several days and three people to finish. So, if you come here, I would not skip out on dessert if you have a means to transport it home. If you come here, come with a freezer bag and ice packs, or come ready to share. In case you haven't been here before, the portions are massive for everything, but the bacon is probably what they are known best for. I'm boring so I just got my egg whites and toast. It was probably about the equivalent of 5 eggs and the toast is very large. My friend got eggs, bacon and hash browns and he had about 3 eggs buried under a pound of bacon and about 3 servings of hash browns with the large pieces of toast. It's fun, the service is good and the prices aren't bad. If you've never been here you have to try it at least once. They have been here for decades!! read more

The Good: My Rueben was fantastic. Huge, filling, and tasted great leftover. My husband got the French Dip, and it was huge and delicious that we all sampled some of his. The Cheese Curds (which should be called cheese cubes) were yummy and had great cheese pull. Our cashier (I wish I would have gotten his name) was warm and friendly. I wish every worker in the restaurant was like him. The Bad: Becky, our waitress. She had such a sour personality. When we ordered a kid drink (which is stated on the menu) she looked at me like I had 2 heads before saying "oh, a small drink." Kid drinks are literally listed on the menu. When the food was brought out, my husband tried to help by grabbing the plate, instead she moaned at him to move his phone (our daughter doesn't talk and communicates through text, which is why it was out). I ordered the bacon and eggs with homemade toast--three eggs, a mountain of bacon, and toast with tasty strawberry jelly that's surprisingly great on the bacon. On our way to northern Michigan we stopped here for lunch. Had been recommended by friends. They'd said to not expect a fancy place, but the BLT (bacon lettuce and tomato) sandwiches were not to be missed. They were right! The place is very close off an I-75 exit in a low long and older building. We were seated immediately and our order taken within two minutes. Very pleasant server. When we heard the BLTs had ONE POUND of bacon each, we decided to split one. Sandwich was made with a very fresh and flavorful Italian bread. My husband and I have never had a worst experience at a restaurant and we are blown away how much it cost for what we got. It was Mother's Day and we were there with our three young kids one being our 9 month old. They sat us and asked if we needed a high chair and we said yes please. Nobody got brought us one. The waitress came and asked and we said yes please then she asked what we were going to want to drink (we said just water was good), but still didn't get us a high chair. Our hands were full hold baby and diaper bag and getting the other two kids settled. She came back with water and said now that my hands aren't full I can get your highchair. Not sure why she went and got water for us first when we still were not even seated because we were waiting on a high chair for the baby. Then she brought the high chair and asked immediately if we were ready to order yet. We hadn't even had a minute to look at the menu or put the baby in the high chair. She never wished me a happy Mother's Day either. Then we ordered and we feel we purposely were served old bacon. It had the worst smell ever that it made me sick. I literally ate the fresh bread and jam and that was it. Then my daughter wanted a cinnamon roll and they brought us a flattened burnt one that we didn't even eat. The only thing we enjoyed was the toast. It ended up costing us $70 for waters, 1 breakfast sandwich, pancake, and a egg and bacon breakfast with toast and a cinnamon roll. I and my sister stopped for lunch on Mothers Day, surprisingly it wasn't busy, I only eat there infrequently because it's a 2 hour drive, the food is always good and servers are great, when we walked in the JC was at the counter, we asked, do we seat ourselves or wait to be seated. His response back was "that's not my job. I don't know, ask a hostess," since there was no other workers standing there, I asked who is the hostess , his response was, there's one go, ask her. Once seated, we asked our waitress if he the guy was a new worker, she said no he's a manager, I asked if that was normal and she said yes she treats the workers and customers and servers like they're not important , I give 5 stars for the food and servers but because of the manager one star. read more

Good and bad about Tony's. The check is not itemized. And I find some surprise extra charges on it. French Dip Sandwich very disappointing at $15.49 + cheese $1.89. Server ask what kind of cheese. I thought perhaps it came with the sandwich found out that I was billed $1.89 and that would be ok if it had a decent amount of cheese on it, but it is so little cheese you couldn't even taste it. To make it even worse is the bread on the bottom was wet to the point it could not be picked up to eat as a sandwich. I and my wife both had to eat it with a knife and fork. The beef was like pot roasted beef cut along the gain being long stringy chunks. VERY DISAPPOINTED. Extra plate charge is .75 Small milk $3.09 AND THEY CHARGE A CREDIT CARD FEE. I've stopped in to Tony's several times over the years and the experience has been pretty consistent. Tonys is usually very busy and when you see the food being brought to the tables it is easy to see why. The prices are reasonable and the portions are large. The portion sizes are definitely not as large as in the past but inflation is affecting everything. The omelettes are now 9 egg instead of the 12 egg a few years ago. The BLT still has a pound of bacon although mine today seemed didn't seem to have as much as prior orders. They do have a lot of parking and the bathrooms are very clean. The restaurant dining area could use a refresh but they keep it pretty clean as well. read more
