You get sooo much food!!!! I was only able to eat 1/3 of my burrito. The chips are store bought, but they deep fry them right before they serve them to you, I liked that. Me & the wife visited a couple nights ago. Nobody in the place. I ordered a burrito. The older gentleman (the owner?) was nice, cordial. But my burrito wasn't hot, nor warm. The meat was from a steam table, already cooked as were the refried beans. This worried me because the inside of the burrito wasn't even warm enough to melt the cheese. The burrito was huge so I dug-around and found chunks of meat that were cold! Not hot. Not warm. Not room temperature. Cold. His steam table must not have been working. Meat products should always be 155-160 degrees F. Anything less, you're taking a risk. It's why many restaurants have a warning message on menus about customers choosing steaks rare or medium-rare. It's also why food prep/cooks should have food thermometers in their pockets, on the counter, in the prep area. I feel bad because I am pro-small independently-owned restaurants but this is serious -- food poisoning can make you sick or kill someone. never barfed so hard in my life to get as much of it out of me as possible. We came out of the Amtrak station, late by over an hour and 1/2 (arrival went from 7:20 pm to 9:15 pm) and we waited for my aunt at arrive, thought we'd get a bite to eat upon her arrival. Well, everyone but Tony was closed by 9:30 when we popped our heads in to ask if he was still serving. Tony said, of course, sometimes til 11! So we ordered, a taco, chicken quesadilla, and burrito plate. Authentic, really delicious and served to order. Tony was a delight and we will visit again. read more

I've heard that Tony 's Place has really good food at a good value from many different people over the past few years. Finally, two nights ago (a Tuesday night) I decided I'd give it a try as I was hungry and happened to be just down the street from Tony's. It was a little after 10pm, so I looked up their hours online. Three sites listed the closing time as 11:00pm. I pulled into the parking lot at 10:36pm - the lights were on & I entered the store. An older gentleman behind the counter seemed quite surprised by my entrance & told me matter of factly, but definitely none too thrilled, that they were closed. In a friendly, jovial tone I said, "Oh no! I'm starving!" Then I half asked, half stated, "It says online you're open til 11pm." I'm not completely certain of his response as it was mumbled & quite softly spoken, but I'm pretty sure he said, "We're closed." At that, disappointed & somewhat annoyed, I politely asked if I could have a menu to take with me. He retrieved one & handed it to me in silence. I thanked him & as I turned to leave the store, I glanced at the menu and sure enough, right on the front, the hours of operation are listed--Closing time is 11pm. (I do not think the hours were adjusted due to Covid at all.) I believe it was slow so he just decided to close up early for the night. So, I'm giving Tony's Place 1 star for several reasons: 1) Obviously, I wasn't able to try any of the food, so I have no idea if it's fresh, tasty, a good value, etc, etc. 2) The older gentleman I encountered most certainly could have been much friendlier. I believe an explanation for closing early would've been nice/helpful & most definitely an apology should've been given. 3) I always try to support small, local businesses, but this is a perfect example of why it's not always easy or convenient to do so and also why so many small, local businesses fail : a lack of consistency! Customers want to know what they're getting and what to expect every time-- therefore it must be consistent! Whether it's the taste or portion size of the food, the hours of operation, or any one of a number of other examples--- consistency is key! This is a major reason why corporate chains outperform and outlast small, local businesses! I haven't yet decided for sure if I will attempt to try Tony's Place again. I'm leaning towards "no" because of this experience & also because there are many other choices in the Joliet area - that have already proven themselves & earned my trust/loyalty. read more

Came from LA and stayed in Joliet. Was looking for quick food and the pictures looked really good. ..... everything tastes like ketchup! The salsa for chips was sweet and ketchup like. Enchilada sauce was sweet and tasted like ketchup. Guac was good , beans tasted normal. But it was all terrible sadly. They guy hooked it up with 4 enchiladas. We ate one and fed the rest to the birds. They might like ketchup. Tony is Hispanic, however I don't know why it wasn't authentic . My father used to go to Tony's place about 15 years ago for business lunches, and now, 15 years later, you can find great, quick Mexican food at Tony's place. Tony, the owner, is extremely accommodating and very friendly. He makes sure you are happy with your order and makes great conversation. They also have great vegetarian options; the vegetarian burrito with potatoes, rice, beans, and guac is the best I've ever had. I am having a major taco craving and I want something different (It seems as though almost every time I go for mexican it is always tacos - Try something new, Beth!) So I popped in on a Saturday. I had a bit of an itch and wanted to get out plus I needed to pick up my stepfather's birthday present. How better to birthday shop than with a belly full of tacos? When I walked in, i almost turned around and walked right back out. If it weren't for my husband, I wouldn't be writing this review. All three stars are for food and service only. The place looks like a sleezy tex-mex joint. Tears in the booth seats, and the chairs looked unsafe to sit on. Colors of the wall were a weird color that added to the cheesiness. Big frog statue thats been scribbled on siting next to the soda fountain. Old style mexican photos and paintings in cheap wood frames on the walls. Dirty, old, cracked tiles on the floor. You could deduce the place was less than inviting. The man behind the counter was fast, and inviting. Ordered 4 tacos for 1.99$ each. My gut was wrenching as i saw the grills covered in grease, and the cooks touching said grease with no gloves on. Oh well, the things we do for love. We sat down and the order came soon after. We got a tray with 2 sauces, chips and salsa, and some pickled jalapeno. I wasn't expecting much to be honest, but when I saw that plate of tacos my eyes lit up like a super nova. Two big steak stuffed, lettuce sprinkled, cheesy heavenly, guacamole slapped, tomato garnished, delicious tacos in all of their glory. The meat was good, and the ingredients blended nicely with each other. Two tacos is more than enough for anyone. It was a pleasant surprise. For people that are picky about their food being touched, I'd say close your eyes. The place can really use some deep cleaning and renovations. However, the tacos are spectacular. Been here a handful of times over the last couple of years. The owner is a great happy guy! Food is always good, not great but good. Clean place, never used bathroom but the dining room is clean. You get a bowl of peppers and carrots free with your meal! It's always consistent food and good experience. As others have said there are other great options in West Joliet area for great Mexican but this one is worth the visit. The quality of this restaurant was quite poor. For starters, as previously mentioned in another review, the salsa (appetizer) was quite watery and was very sweet, almost like ketchup. The enchilada dinner I ordered had way too much cheese on it and made it very hard to chew the food. The guacamole on the side was primarily just lettuce with a hint of watered-down "guacamole" (truthfully, it was more like water and guacamole ingredients thrown together). Though the service has a decent amount of friendliness and Tony makes sure to go around and stop at your table at least once to check up on your liking to the food, it does not unfortunately dismiss the obvious fact that the restaurant is very unclean. I went to Tony's Place the day he opened his doors over a decade ago. I have been out of the area for quite some time and was stoked to see that Tony's was still open. Tony was an awesome guy back then and I was happy to see he has not changed. Very personable and makes you feel at home. That being said... Now the food. I ordered carry out and got a steak taco dinner with cilantro and onion only. I really wanted to like it, but the food was terrible. I tried to choke it down, but about half way through my meal ended up having to spit it out. I actually felt ill after eating it. Sorry, but I would not eat here again. My husband loves Mexican food and I am usually passive about it but when we tried Tony's I was quiet the whole meal! My husband and 2 year old were just as excited about the food. We tried chicken and steak tacos, chicken enchiladas and steak fajitas. All were super delish! This is a staple on our food places. They catered my Xmas Holiday Taco Party for (35) people in Skokie. I say Skokie, because it's a haul from Joliet...They still managed to be there early. The food was hot and tasty, truly authentic. Beverly was awesome on the phone and the two guys that brought the food were the greatest (of course I forgot their names). I will use them again in the future for my taco parties. Here's a note.. This is not super fancy, but it's super good. Don't expect fancy utensils, although upon request, maybe they'll make an exception, I didn't ask. My clients were very happy and excited about the meal (which the (2) guys made up a great spread), I hope I scored some points with this one. If I had (1) complaint, bigger plates.. but is that really a complaint? Probably not. Great job, Tony's Place! This is the very, very best offering for a taste of Mexico! Not only is Tony charming and is always present (the sweet guy needs a vacation) when I am there, he has a honest smile and is quite friendly. The food is fresh, the quality good and the portions are generous. To get vegetarian offerings, they really make an effort to be meat-free truly with your order. People come into the resto due to word of mouth as it is hidden away, very basic in decor and not something you notice driving by. I was in the area with my mother and sister recently, and took them there for lunch---to be honest they looked at each other a little concerned and once they ordered and ate they were thrilled with their choices and the food quality. Been in the area since 1992 and never considered going in. One day while on my break, I finally went in. There was something about the interior that felt very 90's, maybe it was the jukebox. First off, its no surprise that the prices were very cheap. I got a steak burrito ($5.25) and chicken Torta ($5.25) at a great price. The burrito was good, if you mind having the meat minced inside and the torta was my favorite, which is an open-faced sandwich filled with pretty much the same stuff you'd find in a burrito. I kinda didn't know what to make of the service. Tony did actually take my order but, his mannerisms were a little more casual than professional. When I approached the counter to get a take-out menu to look at, he says, "What do you want?" After he rings me up and tells me the total, as I was looking in my wallet to pay, he tells me that he needs singles & I tell him that I'll try to see what I have. As I was counting off how many singles I found in my wallet, he kept blurting out "not enough," when I only had 2 singles. Then I casually apologize to him about it & tells he that I'm not really sorry and gives me my change in a hastily manner. While I stood there waiting for my food & trying to figure out if he was in a bad mood or joking around, I see him talk to some business guy, the same way he spoke to me. So I came to the conclusion that he probably has a sarcastic personality and has a funny way of showing it. I actually wouldn't mind it if I was a regular since it shows character but, I find it a tad unprofessional when its used on new customers. Anyway, those 2 items took less than 5 minutes and a very friendly lady hands me my food, who didn't bear the same overtones as Tony. Believe it or not, this visit hasn't deterred me from being a repeat customer. Just don't take Tony too seriously. Oh, and they only take cash. read more

Please there are way better mexican fast food joints in this town. The only thing going for it is the price. The place seems like it's stuck in the mid 90s . You walk in through the dining area and order at a back counter area. The burrito is just ok a little greasy. Nothing special. Fountain drink dispenser needs to be replaced as well as some of the chairs and tables. If your looking for a cheap burrito and tacos I recommend burrito loco instead. First time going to Tony's in the near thirty years I've lived in Joliet. Had to say my vegetarian burrito was awesome! It was massive. The way a burrito should be. I had to take half of it home. The service was very pleasant and they even brought our food out to us when it was done. Also, the food was prepared almost before I filled my soda cup.
