I've heard that Tony 's Place has really good food at a good value from many different people over the past few years. Finally, two nights ago (a Tuesday night) I decided I'd give it a try as I was hungry and happened to be just down the street from Tony's. It was a little after 10pm, so I looked up their hours online. Three sites listed the closing time as 11:00pm. I pulled into the parking lot at 10:36pm - the lights were on & I entered the store. An older gentleman behind the counter seemed quite surprised by my entrance & told me matter of factly, but definitely none too thrilled, that they were closed. In a friendly, jovial tone I said, "Oh no! I'm starving!" Then I half asked, half stated, "It says online you're open til 11pm." I'm not completely certain of his response as it was mumbled & quite softly spoken, but I'm pretty sure he said, "We're closed." At that, disappointed & somewhat annoyed, I politely asked if I could have a menu to take with me. He retrieved one & handed it to me in silence. I thanked him & as I turned to leave the store, I glanced at the menu and sure enough, right on the front, the hours of operation are listed--Closing time is 11pm. (I do not think the hours were adjusted due to Covid at all.) I believe it was slow so he just decided to close up early for the night. So, I'm giving Tony's Place 1 star for several reasons: 1) Obviously, I wasn't able to try any of the food, so I have no idea if it's fresh, tasty, a good value, etc, etc. 2) The older gentleman I encountered most certainly could have been much friendlier. I believe an explanation for closing early would've been nice/helpful & most definitely an apology should've been given. 3) I always try to support small, local businesses, but this is a perfect example of why it's not always easy or convenient to do so and also why so many small, local businesses fail : a lack of consistency! Customers want to know what they're getting and what to expect every time-- therefore it must be consistent! Whether it's the taste or portion size of the food, the hours of operation, or any one of a number of other examples--- consistency is key! This is a major reason why corporate chains outperform and outlast small, local businesses! I haven't yet decided for sure if I will attempt to try Tony's Place again. I'm leaning towards "no" because of this experience & also because there are many other choices in the Joliet area - that have already proven themselves & earned my trust/loyalty.

Came from LA and stayed in Joliet. Was looking for quick food and the pictures looked really good. ..... everything tastes like ketchup! The salsa for chips was sweet and ketchup like. Enchilada sauce was sweet and tasted like ketchup. Guac was good , beans tasted normal. But it was all terrible sadly. They guy hooked it up with 4 enchiladas. We ate one and fed the rest to the birds. They might like ketchup. Tony is Hispanic, however I don't know why it wasn't authentic . Looked good , but very very disappointing and not authentic or traditional. Jamaica tasted like watered down kool aid !

My dad used to take us here in my formative taco loving pre-teen years. Fast forward 20 years... I am having a major taco craving and I want something different (It seems as though almost every time I go for mexican it is always tacos - Try something new, Beth!) So I popped in on a Saturday. I had a bit of an itch and wanted to get out plus I needed to pick up my stepfather's birthday present. How better to birthday shop than with a belly full of tacos? I ordered 3 soft tacos for less than $6 after tax. I ate two and felt like I was going to burst. The other one got packaged up and brought to boyfriend as a special treat. He loved it. I loved mine. Their tacos are amazing. If you don't believe me, check out the picture!

Friendly service. Quaint and quiet location. No TV blaring news or soap opera which is nice. All you need is to hear the food cooking. Or you can turn on an old school jukebox. Tacos were yummy. This place is cool and I'll be returning soon.

Good Authentic Mexican cuisine. The atmosphere leaves a little left to be desired, but the food is very good.

It gets the job done - the Burrito had some excitment, but the rest of the experience left…read moresomething to be desired. I'd ordered a Steak Diablo Burrito and a Margarita. Chips and salsa were complimentary at the start of the meal. Before you come after me for looking a gift horse in the mouth: Chips & Salsa aren't technically free, the cost is baked into the meal on the back-end. That said, the quality of these was subpar. The chips were straight out of a bag, the the salsa resembled a thick tomato juice with stuff added more than something deserving the name "salsa." I also did not love the Margarita, for it was too sweet for my taste. I can't say for sure, but I have the unfounded suspicion that these are pre-made in large quantities. The main event was the Steak Diablo Burrito. True to form, the Diablo sauce brought the heat. If you are one for whom Tabasco sauce is at the upper end of your limits, you might want to skip this one. My heat tolerance is such that I needed a little extra water, not a side-order of sour cream. The filling did not skimp on the meat whatsoever, and the protein was tender to boot. While not 'S' tier, I would put it solidly in 'B' territory, with a pinky toe into 'A'. A good test is that I couldn't finish, and happily devoured it cold the next day. The interior is large, and has mostly amber lighting with splashes of color, and some traditional-looking architectural elements. The service was friendly and reasonably fast. Final verdict: If you're itching for a great burrito, while perhaps not the greatest one in the world, La Mex can deliver. However, This comes at a cost of a too-sweet Margarita and chips and salsa leave something to be desired. Recommended? Yes, as a general-purpose Mexican spot. Would Return? Yes, but would skip chips, salsa, and margs.

Vegetarian plate and chile relleno ordered by our table. All tasty food. Glad the salsa verde was a few notches higher on the heat chart. Just what I needed.
