If you find yourself looking for an upbeat musical one afternoon, than look no further than Tootsie. Tootsie is currently running at the beautiful Marquis Theater inside the Marriott Times Square. And what a beautiful theater for this pierce. As you sit down, return yourself to 1982. The music playing will help you do so. It was a time different then today. Men and women were questioning the hefty issues likes sexism, feminism, affirmative action, the rise of AIDS. What did it mean and where would the exhale revolution bring us? Lead role, Michael Dorsey (player by the talented Santino Fontana) is an out of work actor, serving tables in a restaurant because he can't catch a break. Frustrated, angry at a director and looking for revenge, he moves to a trick out of Mrs. Doubtfire's Book. He lands a part in a smash musical not as Michael Dorsey but to his now alter ego Dorothy Michaels. Dorothy is a middle aged champion of feminism and women's power. She lands the role of a nurse in the poorly constructed schmaltzy Shakespeare-esque show, Juliet's Curse. He does so by learning about the role from his not his girlfriend, not what she says, Sandy. It's all roars and fun from there. I enjoyed this play because in a rare moment on Broadway, the first act is better than the second. And Tony winner David Yasbeck brings his talents to the jazz hands, Fosse music. Take yourself back to a time when women were making strides in equality. Laugh at how some men reacted. We attended the 2PM show on 11/9/19. Three understudies performed: Jeff Kready in the title role, Sissy Bell as Suzie, & Britney Coleman as Julie, the second lead role. At first we were disappointed. But at the end of the performance, we were on our feet cheering with the rest of the patrons in the theater. Everyone was spectacular! The story is different from the movie, but the plot is basically the same - a strong willed, opinionated actor can't get work as a man, so he assumes a female identity to achieve success. The dialogue and musical numbers were snappy, heartfelt, and impressive. The writing was spot on, with impeccable timing by the actors. All of the vocalists were pitch perfect. We could not see the orchestra, but they were very good. The sound was perfectly balanced so as not to compete, but work with, the vocalists. We were captivated by the seamless changing of sets, and there were quite a few. The crew that worked behind the scenes is to be commended for doing their jobs beautifully. I thought Tootsie was a good play. not great tho. it had a lot of funny parts but it was overly and without question undertones of being incredibly politically correct! I went with two other friends and they felt the same way it was a good play but nothing they would see a second time and nothing they would give a five star review on. The changes that they made compared to the movie were a bit of a put off as well. Definitely if you like going to the theater or you're visiting New York Tootsie is something you should see. When everyone came out to bow is when my friends and I started to leave and then the girl at security said oh you're missing the best part of the whole play right now. There was more? Santino Fontana is amazing and absolutely deserves the Tony for best actor! He flawlessly switched between the two characters- the voices, the costumes, and even the singing! Now for the show itself- and please note that I have never seen the movie. the set design is super simple and I would say there isn't as much choreography and pizzazz as many other shows. There are definitely plot holes when you really think about it but the comedic relief tends to keep the majority of that at bay. The music is fitting but not necessarily a soundtrack you'd listen to afterwards. Overall, good show to laugh but not a must see in comparison to others. It's not as popular as a show at this point and there were plenty of available seats. If you're looking to watch, I'd enter the lottery (I was 2/2 and opted for a different musical the first time) or at least going to tkts. The venue is situated inside the Marriott Marquis. I didn't use the restroom but I assume you have several options at intermission given all the signage. It's actually surprisingly easy to exit down the escalator and stairs as you basically need to disperse as there's no where to linger. The stage door is outside and to the left. I loved loved loved this musical! It was a night of lighthearted fun and a lot of laughs! I try to see as many shows as I can, and I was really looking forward to seeing this one because I love Santino Fontana. He is the lead in the show! I saw him in Cinderella on Broadway and he was fabulous. He was amazing in this role as well! The talent was amazing and I really enjoyed all the songs. I sat in the 4th row mezzanine and thought the seats were awesome. Pro tip: there is an online lottery through broadwaydirect.com that has $40 tickets. If you don't want to take a chance and you want to secure your tickets ahead of time, google Tootsie discount tickets to find some different discount codes! That is what I did and our seats were good and a great price. I felt that for a broadway house, the seats were pretty comfortable with good leg room. This is a great show to see! If you're going expecting it to follow the plot of the movie, save your money. Other than the names and the barest of details, this isn't even close to the movie. I overhear someone sitting near me saying this was written to be more #metoo. Some of it was too woke for my taste. As a stand-alone musical, it would have been a lot better but there were still some big plot issues (some of which may be due to my owning the movie & having seen it again somewhat recently). Where do I begin? First off, Dorothy is doing a Broadway musical that's preparing for an opening instead of an established TV soap opera. There's no fame or publicity that Dorothy gets from the general public since how could there be? The iconic red gown is out of place here since there's no photo shoot she's wearing it for and it's not part of the musical. Second, Dorothy is first revealed in splendor to his roommate Jeff at work. In the movie, this look is shown to the agent & he helps Michael in this scheme. Jeff LIVES with Michael. Wouldn't he have seen this look at home or women's products or clues vs. being shocked at his roommate's transformation? Third, how is Dorothy signing any contracts for a Broadway show when the agent fired Michael then refuses to help him when he meets Dorothy much later on? The show producer, supportive as she is, would expect an agent or manager to be involved or he'd not be working in this show at all. She wouldn't hire some unrepresented newbie (which Dorothy is portrayed as). Fourth, Julie's father and daughter are missing. They help develop her character and give her dimension from some ideal. She's also not dating the director but he's pursuing her. Very different from the movie where he's just a jerk boyfriend and she's possibly utilized the casting couch (which I guarantee is still done now since it's as old as the industry itself). Another big gripe was the musical director was the SAME director that fired him as Michael. Nobody is that dim; he'd have caught on long before the big reveal. The director of the TV show hadn't previously worked with Michael. Those are some of the reasons it fell short for me. However, there were some bright spots. The character of Sandy was hysterical & putting her and Jeff together in the end was sweet. The producer was also great though I think more could have been done to develop that kinship with Dorothy that you saw in the movie. The actors themselves had great stage presence and were generally good at reading the audience though the actor frozen segments in the second act were irritating and too long, especially when the second act started. I was like "Did we forget our cues or our lines? Why aren't we proceeding?" Had it been a stand alone piece with no claim of being "Tootsie" and those major plot issues were fixed, it would have been a much better show. read more

Very entertaining and upbeat show. It was very similar to the Dustin Hoffman movie from years ago. I did not like the first act. They made some changes from the original and it was dumb. The second act was so much better and the updated changes made sense and were relevant for today's age. Theatre is very comfortable and modern. They did not give enough time at intermission for all the people using bathroom. They let the people in but they had to stand in rear until appropriate time to sit and not bother people to get to their seats. Music and lyrics told the story but melodies were not catchy to either hum or sing later. Costumes were nice. Acting and talent were very evident especially with lead actor Santino Fontana, and supporting actors, Sarah Stiles and Andy Grotelueshen. I would recommend this show. read more

I LOVED THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!! If you're a comedy+theater+musical lover, you're in the right place! According to my friends who have seen the original movie, it's "even more enjoyable due to the brilliant, modern twists!" I personally love how clever the lyrics and songs are that flow naturally throughout the scenes and make all the comedies SMART instead of cheesy. Santino Fontana is such a great actor and singer that, in some moments, I would forget he's playing two roles. The stage design is one of my favorites in all the Broadway shows I've seen (40+). You can tell how much effort they've put into all the design that really differentiates lives in New York, theater stage & back stage, and...I'll just leave it there cause I don't want to spoil the surprise. The seats of this theater is also one of the greatest I've been experienced so far, even with a seat on second floor, we still had a good view and managed to enjoy the show without heads-block (that's a new phrase there lol). One of the BEST comedy musicals I have watched on Broadway - including Kinky Boots! Santino Fontana is AMAZING as Dorothy Michaels and the score is composed by score The Band's Visit's David Yazbek. The music is upbeat with a good tempo - more Fully Monty-esque than the melodic Middle East-infused The Band's Visit. Lili Cooper also shines as Julie with Andy Grotelueschen's Jeff Slater perfectly vocalizing what the audience is thinking - in an ennui-laden sarcastic form, of course. It is based off the book by Robert Horn and the movie Tootsie with the plot following the story of Michael Dorsey, a struggling actor who lands a job under the female persona of Dorothy Michaels and concludes that "Being a woman is no job for a man". The music is catchy and shows off the vocal range of the cast, and the dialogue is a non-stop 2 hours of engaging comedy. You will be laughing the entire time! Really enjoyed the 1980s movie, which reflected the sensibilities of that time and as such was trepidatious to see how those could be translated for the 21st century. I was not disappointed as the amended storyline reflects the changes of thirty years and creates a story that now can be considered timeless. The cast led by a superb Santino Fontana generate true chemistry and the production merits the multiple Tony award nominations it has received. 2/4 of our group really enjoyed the show. I just didn't. Disjointed story line and chemistry between the leads not there. The show would have come off better as a play with some musical numbers perhaps. Very, very talented performers who will entertain you. There are a several good comedic moments. I haven't seen the movie, so I can't compare it, but it was my 15th Bway show, and seeing so many, I will tell you it is a must see, and I recommended it to all.
