I booked a chimney cleaning service online which was easy and painless. I was contacted a day or so later to confirm and was asked if they could come earlier in the day which was fine. Day or two before received additional confirmation for my time slot. Day of was notified that the technician that was scheduled for me was sick but that they could do next day, which was also fine. Then a little bit later they indicated another tech could come out at the time originally requested. Technician came and was very professional and did the job quickly and efficiently. The entire experience was poor, but what I'm most upset about is that a lot of lint was still in the line after they finished. We had a heavy rainstorm and an issue with the vent at the roof resulted in water coming through the line. It pushed out a great deal of lint that I expected to be gone given that Top Hat Chimney had cleaned it that same day. read more

Their guy was here less than 15 minutes and spent most of that on his phone. He quoted me $315 to fix the screen and add more, but said he didn't have the materials today and would have to come back. I said that was fine. Then he said that the call today, which accomplished nothing, would be $81! He didn't do anything - he didn't even have the ladders he needed to get up there, he just stood on the ground looking up at it the whole time! TLDR - didn't complete the job as expected, extra long time to finish, I should have asked for a revision to the paperwork to be more clear on finished product and to include verbal commitments, now I need to find someone else to finish up and I have no idea what I'm going to do about the vent they put on the wrong side... Although I would recommend Top Hat for chimney sweep services and vent cleaning, I would definitely NOT recommend them for an outdoor chimney (chase) replacement. They come highly recommended and have a good reputation, so initially I was not concerned when I decided to use them for the repairs/replacement. After all, they were the ones who pointed out to me that the wood was rotting and even provided pictures in their report. After receiving approval from my HOA to have the work done, I called to schedule and specifically asked about paint since the estimate said that I was to provide the paint. I was very concerned about matching the colors since I had no way to do that. After being put in touch with the "estimator" she told me the estimate was still valid from the time they provided it and "oh don't worry - that's just standard language in all our estimates, they will match the paint and take care of it - you don't need to provide anything". Well, I should have asked for an updated copy based on that verbal exchange because oh boy that was just the beginning. Absolutely awful customer service. After I paid for two chimney sweeps I got an estimate for some repairs to both fireplaces to the tune of 3k plus. Scheduled the repairs weeks in advance, got a date and a two hour window for the techs to show up. Day comes, no one shows up so I call to find out they had cancelled due to weather. I understand we can't control the weather, but isn't it common courtesy for a company to call and let you know they are cancelling your multi-thousand dollar service? No, apparently they can just ghost the customer after they've received their deposit. I agree to let them call back and reschedule. No call. Called them the second day, they said they were working on it and would call back that day. Again, no call. After my third time contacting them to reschedule they said they could possibly squeeze me in a month from now. Ridiculous. I will be taking my business elsewhere as I suggest everyone else does, unless of course you enjoy waiting at home for no one to ultimately show up for services you've already put a deposit on. read more

When booking my appointment I was clear that I needed a smaller than 4 hour window of appearance from their tech. I was told an exact time could not be given but she would be sure I would be the 2nd appt of the day - so somewhere before 10 am they would be contacting me with an arrival time. The night before text from TOP HAT CHIMNEY SWEEPS confirmed an arrival time between 8 and noon. When 10:00 am was past with no call, I called them and was told my scheduled time was between 1 and 5. When digging further I was told they saw the 8 to 12 time but there was a 1 to 5 arrival time and 'it looks like we have some computer issues' and no way would they be at my place any time soon. As you all know we are all at the mercy of 4 hour windows for arrival - in reality there are no appointments these days. We all just waste our time waiting for the service person to arrive - hopefully - within the supposed promised window. I would stay miles away from this vendor unless you enjoy waiting for an service arrival time they confirm and then change without even telling you. read more

I would NEVER recommend Top Hat Chimney Sweep. They were hired to inspect and sweep my chimney. Since that time, dirt, rain, and leaves fall through the chimney to my house. I contacted them today and informed them of the issue and requested they return to place the appropriate cap back on my chimney. They told me they were not responsible, would not compensate me, and I should pay for another full inspection. I clarified that I was not seeking compensation. I also clarified I did not require another inspection and was only seeking to pay them to come out and place the appropriate cap back on the fireplace that they failed to place correctly in the initial visit. The receptionist hung up on me while I was talking. I have spoken to other chimney sweeps since my calls with them that are much more pleasant to conduct business. I also have a much higher confidence the other companies will be able to actually perform the work they are hired to perform. So, first off, for whatever reason, finding a chimney sweep in Central Texas was way more of a chore than it should have been. We recently purchased a new house and needed someone to come clean the wood burning stove and chimney. Based on the recommendation of a fireplace store in Georgetown, we called a guy they knew. He very reluctantly agreed to come help us out, but wouldn't be able to get there for "a couple months". Well, that wouldn't work out for us. Second guy we called eagerly accepted our request for a cleaning only to cancel on us the morning of the appointment. Had his secretary call us to say it was out of his area. I still don't understand why he accepted the job in the first place but, oh well, it all worked out in the end. Frustrated with the lack of progress I pretty much resigned myself to not getting anyone to come out. That is until I randomly saw a Top Hat van out on the highway and decided to look them up. From the get go these guys were legit! Very easy to fill out a contact request on their website. They called me back the same day. And set up an appointment that worked perfectly with my schedule. I'm not really a fan of window schedules (you know, the "sometime between 8 and 12" schedule) but I also understand why it is necessary. Especially after the amount of cleaning that was necessary for my chimney. And speaking of cleaning, I'm not going to say you could eat off it now, but I'm thoroughly impressed at what Keenan was able to do. Additionally he worked fast and kept my living room free of any debris. I will definitely recommend Top Hat to anyone that asks and will be using them again in the future. Total scam. A raccoon tore the screen off my chimney cap. Top Hat came out and said they had to do a complete inspection of the chimney before they could give me a quote on replacing the chimney cap. After the inspection, I was told that they can't replace just the cap and I would need a complete new fireplace box, chimney pipe and top cap for a cost of $9000.00. That didn't include the cost of replacing the rock around the fireplace box and repairing the holes in the wall they would cut out. I was then charged $170.00 for the "inspection" which wasn't needed since there has never been a fire in the fireplace. I called a roofer who replaced the screen in the chimney cap and fixed some issues with my roof for $350. read more

Total ripoff for diagnostic that didn't find the actual problem. I call this company because my fireplace was not working properly. The pilot flame was fine but the main burner didn't fire. The technician came over, did few photos inside and outside, "check" for gas leak, etc and told me that thermocouple or thermopile (I don't remember) need to be replaced. I paid $194.85 for a visit and nothing was fixed. Later I received email with estimate for actual fix; it stated that pilot assembly needs to be replaced for $393.88. At this point I decided to check with different places and it turned out that the wall switch that starts the main fire was bad. The part was $0.98 and my fireplace is working again without replacing pilot. I call this company back to request a refund for the diagnostic that was wrong but they refused to give me my money back. When I said that the only thing that was needed to fix my fireplace was simple wall switch I was told that they are not electric company. I am glad I did't replace pilot assembly for $400 and will still have non working fireplace. read more

I bought an old townhome in April that turned out to need way more remodeling than I expected. I knew from the inspection that the fireplace wasn't working but I wasn't sure why. Top Hat came out and did a full inspection then presented their findings and outlined a range of options to address the faults. I decided not to move forward until I got a got a second opinion, and I ultimately found out they had made some irrelevant recommendations and missed a major safety issue. Finding someone else to do the work I needed was a little cumbersome but worth it. It took working with 3 different people on 3 different issues but wound up being significantly cheaper, and I felt like i better understood what I needed and why from the others I ultimately decided to work with. As others have said they came highly recommended, but I did not have a good experience. Top Hat came out to replace the chimney cap and fill in the grout between the bricks in the firebox. The job they did was a disaster. The workman left concrete residue all over my roof and running down the sides of the chimney and they did not fill in all of the cracks in the firebox. I called, they returned and re-grouted the box. They attempted to clean the roof, but used water and a brush and ruined my shingles and sprayed water so hard that the water came into my house and stained my ceiling. I have never had a problem with this before they came. They suggested they would patch my shingles around the chimney, but their sample did not match; therefore, I requested they replace the front of my roof. They agreed stating they would file a claim with their insurance. This has been 2 months ago and I have not heard back from them. Caution if you hire them. read more

Adding another voice to the many who have already complained about the complete lack of professionalism and customer service at this business. I was given a 4-hour appointment window with a text reminder the day before that I would be charged a cancellation or service charge if I did not call to cancel at least two hours before the "arrival" time. The day of the appointment, the technician texted one minute after the appointment window was up, saying that he was on his way. He arrived about 20 minutes later. He would have been there only a little more than an hour, if I didn't make him put the fireplace screen back together that he had knocked apart during the cleaning--and was going to leave in pieces. Despite failing to make its own appointment window or call--while threatening a cancellation charge if the customer fails to call--the company refused to provide a discount on its service, which was substandard. I hope this review persuades at least a couple of folks to look elsewhere for this service. read more

Well it makes me sad to write this review, as this place came highly recommended! Last Thursday we had a guy come out to inspect our chimney because it smelled strongly of creosote and soot. Our two year old son plays in this room and I was worried. We just moved into this house (new to us). After spending about an hour inspecting and taking pictures, the guy assured me they'd be able to fix it, no problem. He detailed two different solutions and told me that the owner would call me to confirm a time to do the work. Today (Tuesday), no one had called me, so I called to check in. After having to call twice, Nancy told me they couldn't do the work. The owner (Royal) never spoke to me or explained why they couldn't do the work. Nancy just said oh, we don't do that work. Here's the number of a mason. I am just extremely confused why the guy who inspected the chimney would tell me they could fix it and then NO ONE would follow up and I'd be told that they couldn't help. I wasted a few days and $54. I'd like a refund, but doubtful that will happen, so I am posting my experience here. read more

I need to preface this review by stating that I'm not actually reviewing their service, but reviewing their employees. And in my book, a company is only as good as the people within in it, so while I don't have experience working with them in a professional manner, I certainly wanted to share what two of their employees did to save my day last week. I was stranded on the side of the highway on Toll 290 with a flat tire. The sun was beating down, and my broken arm in a cast meant I couldn't change the tire myself. I was stressing out watching all these cars whiz by wondering what I was going to do. I looked up from staring at the ground contemplating my next step and two Top Hat employees were walking up with smiles on their faces. They changed my tire, were so kind, didn't ask for anything in return, and truly saved the day. Top Hat chimney was punctual and professional. We played phone tag a couple of times but they were always kind and understanding. The cleaning of the chimney and assessment was great. They took pictures to better explain everything. My fireplace hasn't been used in about 20 years and with last year's snowstorm. I called November 2021 to have a wood stove installed and when the tech (a very nice gentleman) came out he said " I'm here to clean your pipes". I explained that I needed the new stove installed so he called the office and said ok but it will be $150.00 to take measurements so he could give the information to the estimator. After helping him do his job for an hour he left and said the estimator would get back to me with a price. I did not hear from them for a couple of months and finally in January a lady called me and took more information from me and said she would have the estimate and email it to me the next day. Here it is March 29th 2022 and I have yet to hear from anyone. I do not recommend them so I am out $150.00. read more

Although they are more expensive than other companies in the area, I decided to try Top Hat because of the inspection report given with the chimney service. Let's just say I won't be doing that again. Even if they were the cheapest in town I wouldn't hire them again. I had them come clean and inspect my fireplace/chimney and also clean my dryer vent. All I ever saw the two technicians use to clean both places was a shop vac. No other equipment was used. While I did get photos of a lot of pieces of ductwork and piping, I only received before and after photos of places I could reach myself with a shop vac. They failed to communicate with me how the air flow was before and after the dryer vent cleaning and also how much lent was removed (if it was bad or not before cleaning). Also, I was supposed to receive a quote for a dryer cap replacement and never received it. They also never used any actually chimney cleaning equipment to clean my chimney. Did I mention that they tried telling me they completed the job and wanted to charge me the full $380 without cleaning my fireplace? I called the office asking for more details on this and all they offered was to send me the pictures again and send me the air flow report (which I still haven't received). After trying to transfer me to the manager to let her know of the lack of communication on the technicians part, the office kept me on hold, hung up on me, then never tried to call me back. I won't be recommending them and I will be switching back to my previous company who does the same services for a third of the price with a MUCH better result. You can show me pictures all day long, but without having worked in the industry and knowing what I'm looking at, they don't matter very much without some communication behind it. read more

I made an appointment for a chimney sweep and dryer vent cleaning. A few hours before the apt, they called and said the technician was stuck at another job. We rescheduled. The second appointment went better. A young technician (looked early 20's) arrived and performed the service. Entry to exit, he was here about 70 minutes. There was hardly any creosote/soot in the chimney flue, and the dryer vent had a moderate amount of lint. Cost to me $324. Again, 70 minutes of service time. You guys do the math there. I don't think there's a plumber or electrician in this town that charges that much--and they have years of schooling and apprenticeship. This technician used some brush-tools, drill, ladder, shop vac and a flashlight. Bottom line, the amount they charged is not in any way proportionate to the time or skill involved in the job. Did I know the charge up front? Yes. But I had no idea what would be involved. I thought maybe it would take a couple of guys a couple of hours. Nope. One very young guy, working at a moderate pace, using a few basic tools for a little over an hour managed to hit me with a $300+ bill. I sent them an email with my thoughts on all this. They didn't respond. Suffice it to say...I won't be using them again. read more

I am a REALTOR. I asked Top Hat to inspect a chimney/fireplace on a home for a potential buyer. They scheduled it and quoted $125. However, somewhere along the line my request was misconstrued into a chimney cleaning. Under no circumstances would I have requested or allowed work to be performed on a house that neither myself or my client own as we do not have the authority or desire to do so. We got billed $200 for a chimney cleaning and did not even receive an adequate and thorough inspection. I discussed with them multiple times but they refused to honor the previously quoted price, demanding that I pay the full $200 because work that we did not want, ask for, or have the right to authorize had already been performed. After this, I had a 2nd opinion inspection done with another company and they found additional expensive damage that Top Hat missed, such as cracks in the flue. Top Hat may be fine for cleanings but I absolutely would not recommend them for inspections or on the quality of their customer service. read more

Royal came out to inspect our chimney which I thought was leaking. He did a thorough inspection and reported that it wasn't the chimney, but the roof that was leaking. He identified the specific problem and took pictures that I could pass on to a roofer. It was really impressive that he put in the extra effort to diagnose the problem even though a roofing company would be doing the repair work. If there was a 10-star rating system, this company would get 10 stars from me! Some background: in the course of an energy efficiency audit of our home, it was noted that the dryer vent shaft was severely clogged at the point of exit through the roof deck. Since I knew we had not had the vent cleaned in a very long time, I immediately sprung into action and started researching service companies. I am so glad I found Top Hat! My initial contact was via the website's online contact form. Debbie immediately phoned me with the most friendly and enthusiastic personality I have experienced from a service company in quite some time. She understood my needs, and promptly scheduled a service call. When Royal arrived, he quickly analyzed my dryer vent situation and confirmed the findings by the energy audit. Noting an improper vent cap on the roof, he offered to replace it but recommended we contact our roofer to save money, as the 3-year-old roof was still under warranty. The roofer quickly replaced the cap (over the holiday weekend!) and removed as much of the clog as he could. Then Royal returned the next week and took care of the rest of the job. He went above and beyond the usual process of cleaning out the vent system. He also installed an additional screen in the vent cap, corrected an improperly installed flue pipe, and repaired the vent connection behind the dryer. Had he not been so thorough, we might have never known of some of these issues and inefficiencies. We noticed the results of the job immediately with shorter drying times and less heat build-up in the laundry room . . . not to mention the peace of mind knowing that we averted what could have easily a dryer vent related house fire.
