I was there yesterday after an hiking in the area with a friend. I like to visit small businesses and this was a good one. The place is cool, not high class fancy restaurant but cozy and somehow it speaks about tradition and history itself. The owner took care of the order and brought us the food, small talk but good service. We 2 had draft beers, 2 delicious cups of butternut squash soup, 2 burgers that were great and we shared the waffle Fries as side. We paid just $35 and we got out from there happy. This place has been here as long as I can remember. It's just your regular ol' dive bar filled with locals and good times. They have a little someone on the menu for everyone, don't be afraid to bring your hungry friends, your PBR loving uncle and your grandma. The tavern comes up a little quickly as the driveway is slightly obscured by the surrounding hill, but this place is worth keeping an eye out. We settled in to get drinks and spent awhile catching up, with the waitress giving us plenty of time and not rushing us. I ordered the bacon cheddar burger, which was done perfectly with a lightly toasted bun and the meat and cheese tasting perfectly. My friend and I spent about another hour just catching up after eating and, again, we were given all the time we needed without any rush. The interior is designed to replicate a pub, with exposed ceiling beams, all wood floors, and a large bar. Servers and customers are super friendly and willing to give advice about the local area. The food is solid and they do have specials which are homemade. The price is unbeatable. The Bridgewater area has changed much over the past few decades. Prior to the building of the Bridgewater Commons (circa 1986?), few outside the area had heard of it. Prior to the '70s, it was a real backwater town. Top of the Hill (however it's spelled), is a very old house with a bar, an old tv, old staff, a bunch of old tables, and a gravel parking lot. But that's just fine for me and others. Good, basic food, a real "neighborhood bar" feel, and live music on Saturday evenings that can be quite good (only caught it a couple of times over the years). My french toast the other day (3 full slices) and a coffee ran $8 with tip. Burgers and whatnot run $4 to $8, generally. Specials daily. Rustic ambiance, homey staff, affordable, basic fare - if that's what you're looking for, you came to the right place. If you want bling, conspicuous consumption, and such, go elsewhere. This is a total gem of a dive! The family has owned this place since the 60's. Super nice people too! The food was good and the service was quick! Sure, sometimes its odd looking grilled cheese pieces, and sometimes its simply Goldfish crackers.. but its free, so who cares. Specials are on the board daily, and if you want the meatloaf you don't want to show up too late. Its popular. And huge. Actually, most everything served here huge. Jimmy may laugh at you, in fact, if your table has 3 orders of fries coming, due to the amount of potatoes that will soon reach your table. If you can, save some room for dessert. We are regulars at this neighborhood haunt. It is a great place for sandwiches any time of day or night. Dinners differ night to night, but do try the meatloaf if it isn't sold out.
