Our check engine light came on and we have an extended warranty so we took it to the shop that was recommended by our warranty. Things started getting weird when the shop said they would call and they didn't. This happened 3 times. Then they said that they found work that needed to be done. They told us things were really bad, but provided no misfire codes they just said it was not running well. We had not noticed that it was not running well. Then he said that our catalytic converters were misfiring like a "mofo". He asked one of the techs to run the codes and this took over an hour. They could not find our keys. I offered to let them use our other set to get the codes for us. Then Lee was very unprofessional and was talking about how he was going to have to have a conversation with another tech who they suspected locked them in the tool box. He showed us the computer and it said that the catalytic converters were bad and misfiring. When he showed us the computer it said "(000 misfires)". Meanwhile the mechanic found that the transmission was leaking and that was approved by the warranty. Later in the week while they were working on that they found some other issues. While they were waiting for the warranty's answer they put the transmission back in and charged us for 3 hours of labor. Upon talking to the warranty company we found out that they approved to pay for those 3 hours as well so they were double charging. The warranty decided to cover it to cover us as their customer. we were later charged $268 in admin fees for 4 emails between the owner and the warranty company. The warranty company sent us time stamps on that conversation and it did not take all day like they said it did. On top of an admin fee and double charging we were charged $292.80 for them to clean the mud off the bottom of our truck, bolts "that were no longer usable", lines and fasteners, and removing dirt so the bolts would be flush. They also charged us $20 per bottle of cleaning supplies and they cleaned it using break cleaner, which is like $4. They said they gave us a discount, but their numbers were never matching up. It also took them 4 hours to run the numbers. We were told the vehicle would be done at noon and we called a little after noon to get an update. They told us they were still crunching numbers and taking the truck for a long test drive and it could be picked up in about 45 minutes. Over the course of the test drives while they had our truck they used close to a half a tank of gas. We got there around 1 and they were still running numbers. The owner showed us all of your emails and made himself sound good for "going to bat for us" even though we said we were cc'd on the emails. Then he gave us a tour of all their work to make themselves look good. He also admitted that our catalytic converter did not need changed. The numbers were not ready until a little before 4. Over the course of us working with them Lee mentioned multiple times how horrible warranty companies are and how he believes they are a scam. There were definitely some shenanigans going on at this shop. On top of this there was a little bit of cash in the center console that we forgot to take out and it is no longer there. Thankfully it was only like $25. There are multiple reviews stating that things were stollen. They have signs saying they are not responsible for lost or stollen valuables while the car is at the shops. We were assured that our truck was ready to go and should run great. They knew we were going on a trip across the state. We took off for our trip and the engine light came on when we arrived at our destination. We went to run the code and it was for the part that they had fixed. We called them as soon as they opened and told us to take it to an AAA certified mechanic in the area. They were thinking that the truck likely needed more transmission fluid. They said that torque converters come pre filled, but when we talked to another mechanic they said that is not true. We took it in and they determined that the transmission was shot. They also were trying to figure out the exact work that Top Tech did and upon looking at the invoice we got they told us we got ripped off. We asked Top Tech to communicate with that mechanic and they refused to call. We called Lee a couple times and he kept saying he would when he was not busy. The other shop that it was at called our warranty company and they decided that we likely could baby it home. Since Top Tech did not contact the shop like they said they would. We just paid the bill even though they said they would cover it, but they stopped communicating. We got outside Missoula and broke down. And then we took our truck to a mechanic that my family has used for years and they determined that the transmission was shot. They looked at the transmission and noticed that Top Tech should have also looked at some of the lines connecting the transmission because those were leaking. read more

Darin the owner might be able to repair vehicles as for he's a master mechanic , so he says. yet he can't find any mechanics that want to work for him. the problem is Darin is a drunk and has a high maintenance wife at home gor which he can't afford to pay for the expensive vacations and weekend trips across country and all the car hopping she wants to do. So Darin over charges, lies about repairs and jacks his customers around to the point that every other mechanic shop in town has had to repair the vehicles Darin's shop hasn't done right or flat out fucked up on the repairs he was supposed to do. Darin has a bit of an anger problem so when he gets a disgruntled customer he often will threaten them and get in pissing matches as unprofessional as that might seem. But Darin does donate to his church so hopefully he ll receive some grace for his dishonest work and lies he tells customers often delaying the repair for days even months. as a community we d like to see Darin move back to Alaska where he originally came from. maybe they can feed him to a bear or skin him out. read more

After seeing & personally hearing the way these people have done business with my friend who was broken down in Billings I will be sure to stay away. I do not and will never recommend this establishment to anyone in the future. They are full of excuses and have a terrible attitude. They knew he was on a time crunch and needed to get on the road. They haven't followed insurance protocol and now speaking to him so rudely when he tries to communicate with them and get things as simple as reasonable updates uses excuses like sick children and mystery hard to find tools. This place was highly recommended by the AAA tow truck driver, however all they have done is cause added stress and expense to an already stressful and expensive break down. Because he didn't follow the insurance protocol and refused to send an quote for repairs, the insurance claim was denied. My friend had 2 choices, pay $4500 for 1 (ONE) fuel injector to be replaced, they received the vehicle after midnight, in early morning hours of Saturday 11/9/24 and repaired the vehicle by 11/15/24. My friend expected for insurance to cover it but considering he straight refused to get the estimate sent over and did the repairs prior to being authorized by ANYONE to do them, he had to either buy an airline ticket home without his truck or pay out of pocket and see this guy in court later! He chose the latter and is on his way home finally. Darrin was also sure to pass on his credit card fees to my friend @ 3% additional charge on any portion paid by credit. Luckily for my friend he was able to pay a decent amount of this exorbitant fee in cash. I know I'll be glad to be a witness when he takes them to court! I listened and watched this from start to finish and I will never use this place and be sure to tell as many people who will listen! Super unprofessional. Worst shop ever. Cost me almost $400 dollars for them to put in the wrong part and not fix anything. The shop said they would put in an OEM part because that was the only way to fix the problem and instead they put in an aftermarket part and the same issue continued. I had prepurchased the bearings rotors and brake pads to have them replaced in my ford ranger. Darin quoted me $400 plus I needed an $80 food donation to complete the job. I took in the truck and had figured it would be about a 3 hr job. At the end of the first day I was informed the job was complete however there was a squeal coming from the front tires and they didn't know why. Darin informs me he wants to keep truck overnight and look at in the morning. After waiting all day the next day and getting put off on why I couldn't pickup the truck. I finally tell Darin to stop any more work on the truck as for I thought it would be a 3 hr repair not 2 days worth! At end of second day I'm finally told that the dust shield was rubbing. But strangely enough Darin tells me that I should be aware my truck wasn't running so well now and I'd experience loss of power and more gas usage?? My bill was $1200 at this point! Ridiculous! FIVE STARS all the way and here's why... We live in Colorado Springs, Colorado and were driving up to Eureka Montana on vacation with our large family. We always spend the night in Billings (600 miles from home) on our way up to the Koocanusa area. Our 2015 Ford Transit 350 with Ecoboost twin turbo started to have a cylinder misfire between Buffalo Wyoming and Billings. We were quite concerned and fearing our vacation could be over. We stopped several times as the cylinder misfire was triggering an engine light. After several stops and small waits on the side of the highway, we literally sputtered into Billings late on day 1 of our 10 day vacation. I set my alarm for early the next day. I visited the local Archie Cochran Ford dealership. I explained my situation and graciously pleaded for help in diagnosing and fixing our van. The service tech just said, "We're busy this morning but you can come back at 1 pm. No promises." We were supposed to be out of our hotel no later than 11 am. The service tech then gave us the names of two local garages why he said they dump work off to when they are too busy. I started driving. The first garage said, "We're booking two weeks out." I said, "Thanks but no thanks. " The guy was courteous enough to say, "I'll run diagnostics on it for free for you though." Sure enough, the code confirmed a cylinder #3 misfire. I also have a Ford F-150 with the same engine so it didn't surprise me since we actually experienced the same issue with our truck last winter. I thanked them but moved on depressed and feeling like our vacation was slipping away while we were going to be stuck with a mountain of debt in Billings. I went to Top Tech third, armed with my code readings from the previous garage. I once again humbly asked for help as we were just starting our vacation. A mechanic and a service/office guy told me, "Let's get it in and we'll take care of it. We are the only garage around that help stranded tourists and we are here to help them get back on the road." I sat in their comfy waiting room for FIVE long hours and was amazed that they were able to fix our van without an appointment, with just me stumbling in as a tourist out of luck. They got it diagnosed, ordered the parts, and replaced the plugs, boots, and the #3 ignition coil. Same repair that I'd actually had done on my truck last winter so I knew they were legit and weren't just stealing my money. Granted, nobody wants to break down on vacation, but I was more than relieved to shell out the money and get back on the road before we had to get out of the hotel. I cannot thank the guys at Top Tech enough. They saved our vacation, put us at ease, and blessed our family. Twelve hours earlier, I went to bed worried that we'd be stranded in Billings indefinitely and twelve hours later, the guys at Top Tech saved our vacation. Darren had our vehicle for 9 months. First we brought it in and he said he fixed it but we had to bring it back because we had the same issue. After bringing it back because he wasn't able to fix it the first time he was careless and got our vehicle stolen by leaving the keys in it and parked outside. He tried to blame it on a handicapped person who works for him but our cameras showed he was the last one to drive it. It's nice to know he lets just anyone drive other peoples vehicles. After our vehicle was stolen he didn't call to let me know it was missing. In fact I called him to ask where it was and he said, "It's in the shop". After the vehicle was recovered we mistakenly towed the vehicle back to his shop thinking he would fix it right away and feel some remorse about being negligent but instead he ended up taking 5 more months to fix our vehicle. He blatantly ignored our insurance company and failed to file an insurance claim on his end and charged us for the vandalism that was done. We called nearly each week and he had nothing but excuses and Darren eventually he told us to stop calling because he won't fix our car any faster. All in all he had our vehicle for 9 months, no urgency, no apology, no discount. read more

So I brought in my 84 camero my heater blower went dead and after another shop put in 3 months earlier and they told me another 375.00, so he checked it all what was wrong a wire came loose and when the other mechanic said for some reason the new blower only worked on low not the 3 settings as before. Julie's situation sounds incredibly unfortunate. I've only been here a few times with two different vehicles but in all cases I received exactly what was expected for the estimated cost. Our first experience was packing the Suburban for a road trip, stopping for lunch on the way out of town, noticed a large bulge on the inside of a tire, all tire shops were too busy to help, Top Tech got me in, they went and picked up (at no extra charge) a matching tire from a tire shop that was too busy to deliver, had the tire mounted without damaging my good rims (that right there is amazing anymore) and saved our family road trip. Thanks Top Tech! In another case they did work to my European car for less than the cost of the dealer. There was a minor issue that needed some follow up but not a big deal. I also referred a guy from out of state who broke down on a Friday night. They got him in and our on Saturday. He later contacted me to thank me for the good referral. read more

Hi pressure sales tactics and tricks, don't trust all these glowing reviews on this place, check other places besides google. There is a reason there is a help wanted sign always in the window. When the mechanic tells you that you may want to "check around" when the owner isn't there to hear, you know even the mechanic hates the quote the owner is pushing him to sell. Very upset after sending my wife here. I took a vehicle to Darrin before about a year ago, and he is very good at the ol bait and switch game, as well as adding things up quickly while talking like he is doing things as a favor. I spoke to tire rama where I should have taken the car initially, but had my wife take to toptech for convenience. I have an older acura that had a stripped wheel stud and needed repair. Tire rama looked it over and spent time looking it up and quoted $80 parts and labor included. Darrin quoted my wife $426.12 for the repair, which she obviously declined at the time. However my wife was charged over $40 for them to grind off the wheel stud and put some gorilla tape on it, which we never authorized but of course my wife felt pressured to pay. Moral of the story, a big smile and big talk doesn't equal quality service at a fair price. Avoid and find another shop is the only advice I have. I will never step foot back into this shop again nor recommend anyone to go here. read more

Check engine light came on while moving across the country. This shop was the only place in town that I found that was certified to work on Volkswagen. They squeezed me in despite being busy, let me sleep in my car in their lot over night, and I felt they were very open, transparent, and honest about their work. They saw I had everything in my car and was counting pennies so they made sure to help me out. The waiting room accommodations are fancy -- refreshments, couches, books, and ski lodge atmosphere. Judging by the other reviews, I can see this place appearing expensive and whatnot but I'd say it's worth it. If you want a place that looks all run down and will do work dirt cheap -- do that. CHECK the BBB Site They have multiple complaints and D+ rating!!!!!!!! Top Tech automotive charged me for repairs they didn't do. They said that they fixed the valves and machined the head; they also "repaired" an oil leak. The service took 14 days to "complete." They kept running over on their estimated completion date. I had multiple conversations with Darin the owner and he keep apologizing for the bad customer service. When I drove the Jeep away from the shop the radiator house blew off because they had used bad parts to install it. During the work they cracked the exhaust manifold. I brought it back to them because Darin said they wanted to check the work. He gave me a quote for the manifold repair and said they checked all of the work and everything else look good. I brought the vehicle to another shop to have the manifold work done. When the shop began the work they contacted me to tell me that the head is leaking oil and antifreeze and that the oil pan is leaking had had not been repaired and the transmission work had not been completed either. He took pictures of all of the leaks and it was obvious that the leaks had been happening since the original work done at Top Tech. When he took the head off the gasket was installed upside down. He checked the head and the head has not been machined properly and will need to be redone. The 10 of the 12 valves are leaking and had not been repaired as quoted. I called top tech to determine if we could reach an agreement to resolve the issue. Darin was rude and told me that he was not going to reimburse me any of the cost. That I should have brought it back to them for the repairs. I had already paid someone to start the work, I wasn't going to pay them and then and bring it back to Top Tech to have them do a bad job the second time. If it had only been one thing that would have been different, but all the work they did was bad or I was charged and they didn't even do the work. I told him I was going to file a complaint with MT DOJ and go to small claims court if we couldn't come to an agreement. He told me to bring the pictures with me to court and he would see me there. read more

Top Tech is about as good as it gets. Darren and crew are true gear heads who are good at what they do. They had us diagnosed pronto (catalytic convertor failure) and the biggest delays were due to the fact the parts had to be shipped in. As a mechanic I can say the trade is NOT a perfect science. Failures happen and nobody is so perfect that every detail, every time gets caught. The people at Top Tech however, are diligent enough where they're not happy cutting you loose if it's not right. Passing through Billings on a coast-to-coast trip in a new-to-me car, the low coolant warning came on. The filler cap was jammed so I could neither check the level nor add coolant. Top Tech got me in quickly, replaced the cap, and located and repaired the leak that caused the coolant to be low. I was on my way in a short while. This place is definilty rolling the dice and the prices are outrageous came outta here 1300$ less and more problems my car shakes for something I never ask them to do they assume to tighten motor mount that didn't need tighten unless they broke something and when I brought to a awe certified mod shop to ask where they tighten the mounts the guys tells me every other thing that it could be when I'm telling him it ain't that then he say it's the axel first it's cv on tire then I tell him it's been diagnosed now it's the axel and it ain't the axel it's the mounts that they decided to tighten that has the front end of my vehicle shaken left to right, This never happen before my car arrived at there shop just to replace a lower radiator hose.Also they took 8 hours they charged me for to diagnose a the AC when I told them to make sure the fuse have clean contact and are seated properly,there fix was just to replace shit and charge me,so there about to close they have tried and replace every thing they could HCU Switch but AC Still doesn't work I go in there garage finally I see the manager owner with my fuse cleaning the fuses and re searing the fuses all of sudden be fire our eyes the fans and AC kick in ,which tells me if he or his crew had done this from the start they wouldn't have charge me for 8 hours of diagnosing the AC and the charge me 350 to put on a lower radiator hose that I he previously paid 150$ for so watch it these guys are for sure hacks and rip offs I get it there in the middle of no where but at least have the tools and certified techs to do the job instead hacking and replacing parts.First off I was fine being over charged because I was back in the road the that night but with the shaking of my car tells me they don't no what the hell there doing just hacking and replacing parts.There maybe okay for simple tire ,brakes,etc but any intricate engine or mechanical Assessing and diagnosing I would steer clear of this shop. read more

This place was a god send!!! My friend and I were driving home from Indiana and after filling up the gas tank the car wouldn't start. We were 900 miles from home and stuck on a weekend. We must have called 15 places within a 15 mile radius and Darren is the only one who answered the phone and was willing to help us get home. His shop wasn't even open at the time he just happened to be there late finishing up a different clients vehicle. After hearing our situation he had the part we needed dropped off at his shop within the hour and had us back on the road within 2! He gave me a full breakdown of other things that could potentially give me problems in the near future and typed up a detailed diagnostic for me to give my mechanic at home to pick up where he left off! The waiting room was so cozy and welcoming I felt like I was hanging out in his living room instead of an auto repair shop! If I could give them more stars I would!! read more

Went into this shop with the info. 6 hours later charged me $500 for labor. They replaced one part charged me $250. The truck ran poorly after I left and they added sea foam to my oil and gas, said that would fix it. Do not go here even if you are desperate. Just wait until you can get into another shop. They know you are desperate and they will use it. Check engine light turned on 300 miles later and the a/c they repaired went out 10 miles down the road. Do not go here. I was on day 2 of a 1800 miles, cross-country drive when I found out that one of the screws that holds the plastic undercover of the car to the front bumper had fallen off, leaving one corner of the cover kind of dangling. It usually may not be a big issue needing immediate attention but when you've 2 days of driving ahead of you, you don't want to take chances. I found these guys online based on the good reviews and took the car in. It took them about 15 minutes and I was out of the shop! They didn't even charge me (the screw would've been free, but I anticipated a labor or diagnostic fee). I give 4 stars and not 5 because I don't believe a shop can be reviewed based on 15 minutes interaction. However, they get aces in courteousness and speedy service in my books. P.S. They've a decent collection of photographs hanging on the walls, in the restroom and some art books too. Heard recommendation for shop & detoured vacation 100 miles to go here. After review, manager provided verbal estimate of $1000 including parts & labor. Day 1, manager ordered & received wrong part. Day 2, manager has us order part ($450 + overnight shipping $125). Day 3, parts arrive 10am. Manager works on RV but goes to lunch. Were told we'd be on road early today. After calls by asst manager to manager, learn manager had injury needing doctor & he refused to let other employees work on our RV. Late day 3, he returns at 3:30 & begins working on our vehicle until early evening. Ready at 9pm. NOW told our bill is over $1600 & $200 to be discounted. Charged Overtime too. SHOCKED. Taken advantage of as an out-of-towner. When back home, our local transmission shop provided estimate of same work & learn overcharged $500.00. 1)Informed person to remove recommendation for this shop from RV Group & recommend group avoid this shop. 2) file complaint with BBB. 3) file complaint with Google & Yelp. Gotta say this place was the biggest lifesaver! Our alternator went out in our Volvo, and as it turns out the battery literally is worthless without the alternator! Way too late for any shop to help us especially on a Saturday! But they REOPENED THE SHOP FOR US. Mind you this is at 6 PM on a Saturday. We went from most certainly being multiple days late to Canada to on our way in a matter of hours. Truly a blessing and Darin, the owner, is a truly good man who has all my respect. I'm giving a shout out to Curt Lind, who is having a big celebration today, and we were the ones who made Darin late to it!! So we apologize Curt and thank you for knowing such a genuine man.
