My son was passing through Billings when he had truck problems. I called to find a shop on Saturday afternoon and talked to Darin, who agreed to wait until my son got there to look at the truck. When Darin understood my son had to be back at Montana Tech in Butte on Monday, he agreed to come in on Sunday to do the repairs. He advised me of the costs of repairs, sent me pictures of the problem and the damaged parts, had my son bring me the old parts once the work was done. Two months later, there was an issue with the parts in Butte. Darin on his own volition, contacted the mechanic and told him those parts were under warranty and then he shipped those parts to the mechanic in Butte. I have not seen that level of customer care in years. And this was for a customer that was only passing through his city. Thank you read more

Was visiting from out of state, My pickup engine light came on and it got really sluggish and would die at every stop sign or stop light on the day I was scheduled to leave town. I went to the auto parts store and got a computer diagnostic - and it came up with a ton of codes - cam position sensor, shaft position sensor, timing, I called Top Tech at 3:00 and they said they could get me in that day even though they close at 5:00 or 6:00 or so. They followed through, and did a great job. They stayed several hours after closing and got it done that night. He even called me 2 days later to check on us. It's now almost 2 months later and the pickup is running great. I'm grateful to have found this place! read more

If there was an option to leave zero stars I definitely would. After taking my vehicle to a new, honest and reputable mechanic, he looked over my invoices from Top Tech, and informed me that not only did I get charged triple for a timing belt and kit (price confirmed by auto parts shop), but they also charged me for belts not even existent on my vehicle. In addition, they charged me to "repair a tire after they found a nail in it," which coincidentally I overheard them saying the same thing to another customer. I'm not sure if they found me an easy target, seeing as how I am a woman with next to no knowledge of automotive repairs, nonetheless it is very disappointing that there are people in this world that take advantage of someone else's wallet when supposedly offering an honest job. A rough estimate reveals they overcharged me by a least $700 if not more. Please be aware, as it is too late for me to get this money back, but it is not too late for other customers to go elsewhere. read more

We had our Yukon Denali towed to Top Tech in February of 2017. Darin Shaw, owner of Top Tech, represented to us that the vehicle needed a new engine or a rebuilt engine. We chose to have the engine rebuilt. The work took weeks longer than originally quoted to be completed. We would show up to the shop to pick up our vehicle or contact Darrin at the time he told us and he would not be available to give us our Yukon. Finally, when we did get our vehicle back he was not willing to give us any documentation from the machinist to prove the engine had indeed been rebuilt. We paid in full and the receipt given to us has a three year warranty on it. In November 2017, less than one year later, we began having problems with the engine again. After, taking our vehicle back to Top Tech based on the warranty we have been given the run around to this date. Our engine is still not running properly. We have been to Top Tech and have tried to contact Darrin on numerous occasions. It has been determined that parts he told us he replaced had not and now we have taken our vehicle to a third party mechanic that has advised us that the engine does not appear to have ever been rebuilt. Darin Shaw with Top Tech is still not able to provide a receipt from the machine shop and is not accepting any responsibility for the problems we continue to have with our Yukon. He also is now telling us he only gave a one year warranty. The last time our vehicle was in his shop for 5 days supposedly being fixed we found out that one of his shop helpers (not a mechanic) was using our Yukon to do personal errands. We have NEVER encountered a more unethical business man. The amount of lies and run around he has given us over the course of the last 15 months is despicable. read more

I wish I could give them 0 stars. I brought them a car on july 2nd and was told it would be done by July 15. I drove back to Billings in a rental (on the way from Iowa to Washington) to retrieve the vehicle. They said "Its not done today, come back tomorrow." Thats fine I'll get a hotel room. This happened for a week. So not only did I have to pay for a hotel room and rental car for an extra week but I had to check out every morning because they assured me that they would be done. I spent nearly every day in a Barnes and Noble waiting for check in time at another hotel. Then when they finally have the car done, its costing me $2,000 more than the estimate!!! How can you do that to customers? They have me drive it around and it doesn't feel like it used to but they assure me that everything is perfect. I drove it to Missoula and the car trouble going into park. Then I get to the Idaho border on i-90 and the engine blows again. So I just spent 4.5k on an engine and I get what, 600 miles away? Then they truck it back to billings from Idaho and say they'll fix it again for us. They jerk us around again until October. My mom has to fly there and drive it home. She's too ashamed to tell me how much more they charged her. Family friendly business my rear-end. I should drop AAA just for taking me there. read more

On Monday I called to get my car in for a diagnostic and I asked what day worked best for them. He told me Thursday at around 8. So this morning I get there at 8:15 and at around 9:15 I am told they are just about to hook my car up to their scanner. My ride to work got there shortly after and I was told I would get a call soon. A couple hours later I called to see if they had done it yet, and he said "I'm just about to take it back and get it hooked up to the scanner." And I said "OK, but at 9:15 someone told me that same thing." He replied, "yeah, that was me." Fast forward to 2 o'clock, when my husband asks me about it, and I relay what has happened, so he calls down there. They told him all of the codes that popped up and I head in to pick up the car. When I got there the one kid was on the phone with my husband and said to him that when he hooked it up, there was only 1 code that popped up, but the other mechanic kept insisting it was multiple codes. I told them we had had it scanned elsewhere and there was inly 1 code that kept popping up, the kid changed his story and said, "well there were definitely more codes." I stated that is was a bit crazy to pay $160 for a 15 minute diagnostic when it took 6 hrs, and the kid says well I just did this diagnostic half an hour ago. (Why did I ask when was best for you, set up an APPOINTMENT for the time that works best, get told at 9, and 11, and almost 2 that you were just about to hook it up?) The plan was, 15 minute diagnostic and then get it fixed, but instead I paid an outrageous amount for a waste of time. They informed me that they drove my car for 20 miles (somehow they used 1/4 tank of gas though) and then gave me a printout of the codes. The older mechanic turns to the kid and says "oh, and make sure we get a printout of those codes sent to (Husband's) phone too" which really upset me, because he was definitely implying that I wouldn't understand it. I have never been so disrepected. I would not suggest going here, we heard multiple conflicting stories, and had to pay to be treated with misogyny, disrepect and dishonesty. We have one car for a family of 4 with opposite scheduled jobs and school. We turned to them to help based off of the positive reviews I have read, and it was an awful decision. I don't even know how this place got 3 stars! This place is a scam!!!! This mechanic charged me 62 for 15 minutes do work!! When did mechanics start making 248 dollars and hour!!!?? I was in the area and needed my head light changed out. I had called and asked how much it was going to be and the guy had stated not that much it would take a few minutes. I had already purchased the light bulb and it just needed to be installed. When I walked into the office there were signs everywhere stating pricing after services rendered are none negotiable (should have been my first red flag!). It took the guy 15 minutes. The air compressor being turned on to remove my tire and it being turned back on to place the tire and lug nuts on. I didn't know that mechanics made 248 dollars and hour because he charged me 62.00 for 15 minutes!!!! Ridiculous!!! Don't go here! read more

My car was in Top Tech over one year. Went in for an oil leak and the computer had a security light that would not let you start the car. After 3 months, Darren said he had fixed the computer but had not yet fixed oil leak. One month later he said it was almost done, then a month later said his crew had broken something on the car. Five months later I got the car back with more damage than when I took it in. Both outside mirrors are broken, air conditioner no longer works, sub-woofers are blown out, and the computer was not fixed. When I brought all this to his attention, Darren stated "just take me to court because I do not have time to deal with this". All I asked was that he make it right; just give me the stuff to fix the car, but he refused. My car is a 2004 Chevy Impala with a 3800 engine, automatic transmission. The car is so common I do not understand how they could mess up such a simple job. I do plan on taking legal action as soon as possible. I took my vehicle down a road it should not have been on. Hit a bunch of rocks. My car war clunking. I took it to top tech to get it repaired. They told me it was cv axle making the noise and quoted me 1200 to replace that and the bad starter. Said my engine mounts looked ok in the same phone call and the car would be ready the same day. I go to get my vehicle the next day, it's not ready. No big deal they just didn't call me to let me know, I can pick it up on the following Monday when it's ready. Still ok. I'm getting ready to pick my car up 11 on Monday. It's still not ready, again no phone call from the business, they said they would call back later. They did, I wasn't able to answer. No voicemail. I get a call the next day saying I had to pick the car up or it would start incurring a storage fee. I payed my bill of almost 1200 and the car is still making the same noises. Horrible, and I am really angry. I went in to this place a little over a week ago because I had a bad coolant leak. I am a 22-yr-old female college student, and don't know anything about cars. I also just moved to Billings a few months ago, and saw ads for this place and went to their website and read all the nice reviews. When I got there, they took a look at my car and said it would be about $1,000 dollars to fix... I was shocked at first because I didn't think it would be that much! I told them that friction had caused the front of my car to catch on fire about a month previously and a bunch of work had been done on my car AFTER they had taken a look at my car. They told me that my water pump was the source of the leak and my timing belt was saturated with coolant and needed to be replaced. I called my father and told him about what they said, and he talked to them and they sounded nervous and unsure of what they originally told me after I had told them my car was recently worked on. My dad told me they might be trying to rip me off. I told him they were really nice and didn't think they would do that to me. I always try to see the good in people. Well, I told my coworker, and he said his friend was a mechanic and they would take a look for me. They called me back and said that it was my throttle body intake hose and for me to take a look. They opened the hood, and the first thing I noticed was the hose they were talking about was completely disconnected. It was REALLY OBVIOUS WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. They told me there was no way they wouldn't have noticed that, hell even I NOTICED IT, and it was a cheap and easy fix... so they were probably trying to get more money out of me by telling me it was my water pump. My water pump was old, but it would be quite awhile until it needed to be replaced. It cost us $15 dollars to buy a new hose. My car has been working amazing since. I am very angry. I have heard of auto mechanics taking advantage of women because they don't know anything about cars. I want to believe they just couldn't figure out the problem... but there is NO WAY they didn't know it was that hose. I may have just gotten the sleezy mechanic out of their staff, and maybe the rest of the staff their are honest people... but I am NEVER going there again. Also, every time a friend of mine tells me there is something wrong with their car I am going to recommend that they don't go to this place and tell them my story. Again, I am really really angry. DON'T DO IT!!!! He does not deserve a star.....I hope this review will steer wayward travelers from this place. Our truck broke down on our way back to MI and we had it towed to Top tech. The owner Darren appears to be concerned and very helpful but don't let that fool you. It was late so we went to a motel and was told it was it probably a lifter that he would check on it in the morning and get back with us. We were never given a price for a diagnosis nor did we authorize any work to be done or started. He called next am stated it was a lifter and would cost $1900 to fix one lifter $2700 if he did one side. I researched other auto repair shops in the area and everyone I called all said the same thing, "Do not get work done at this shop he will get your vehicle in his shop tell you one price then get vehicle torn apart and quadruple the price"; also I was informed by many places that when a lifter goes bad the cam needs to be repaired as well however, Top Tech never mentioned this as possible issue. When i asked he said as worse case scenario it would cost $6100 if i needed came repaired as well, keep in mind he already diagnosed it and said it was one lifter and wouldn't have said anything if i didnt bring it up. Then as worst case scenario he would just recommend replacing my motor for $6500 because he stated I had 171,000 miles....the mileage on my vehicle was 106,000 miles. I decided to be safe and take it to the Chevy dealership when i informed the owner Darren that i would be towing it to another shop he told me i owed him $366 for the diagnosis (which was wrong diagnosis) then i was told i could not pick my vehicle up that day i had to wait until the morning. When i picked my vehicle up he did not have my vehicle put back together correctly and it would not start after they parked it along the road which there was not an issue ever with the vehicle starting. I only paid the outrageous diagnosis fee so i could get my vehicle out of his auto shop. I am so glad we took it to Chevy....the accurate diagnosis was All (16) new lifters, not 1, and cam repaired total $3500. Call the other shops in Billings they will be happy to tell you the same thing I don't know how this man lives with his self and sleeps at night. Please heed this WARNING!!! read more
