Got to experience the grand opening of Top, the new rooftop bar at the AC Hotel in Detroit. I can honestly say this spot has some of the best views of the city I have seen yet. All the stadiums stand out beautifully and looking down the stretch of Woodward Avenue was quite beautiful. The outdoor area is lovely, they have both an open and a covered section, fire pits for cooler days like today and a similar feel to the outdoor area of the monarch club, which is not surprising as they are sister locations. Inside is warm woods but light and bright. The menu leans Basque, but that is a guess based on nothing more than the fact there is a restaurant in Austin, TX with the name Kalimotxo, which is the name of a drink on this menu, and they have a Basque forward menu. Speaking of the menu, it is limited but pleasant. I did a couple of tapas items and they were both nice, I will especially recommend the empanadas. But they did have a couple of bigger dishes that looked great also which I will try another time. If nothing else come out here for a drink and soak up the views. I can't wait to check it out again at night.

Detroit needs more rooftop bars. Come here for two things: a great view of the city and a nice cocktail. The booze bottles are pretty standard for a hotel style bar, but great marks for custom made simple sugars and execution. Great a quick drink and stop and run. Wanted to open up the chair for another person on the first day of business. Tip: Probably blocked off by now. A paver/tile fell thru the outdoor patio floor. Avoid the corner section. A staffer was moving tables for safety. Other than that nice day for a drink. Roger the bartender was great. Enjoyed the smoky mezcal drink (Cyprus).

My experience was amazing. From the moment you walk in, you are transported to another place. From the views, to the amazing service, to the food, this place needs to be on your list!

Topa, another rooftop bar in Detroit, recently opened on Memorial Day weekend on the rooftop of the AC Hotel. It's tucked away on the outskirts of the city, in Brush Park, and still gives lovely views of the city, albeit a little further away from the action. What I love about Topa, is the atmosphere is more relaxed than other rooftop bars like Kampers, Pine Hall, and Monarch Club, which are often difficult to make reservations or obtain a table. Reservations at Topa are easier to come by and reservations for larger groups are also more easily arranged without hassle. We easily made a reservation on Open Table without any issue. I would recommend looking for parking nearby, rather than parking in the hotel parking garage which is $20. We found free street parking close by, just a few minutes away in a neighborhood. The AC hotel itself, is a chic posh boutique hotel with the Conservatory Bar in their lobby when you first enter. To check in for your reservation to Topa, you enter to the side where the host directs you to the elevator which takes you 10 flights up to the rooftop bar. They have indoor and outdoor seating on the rooftop. The indoor seating is in booths, all facing the glass window of the patio, so that you don't miss the gorgeous view of the city. The rooftop patio itself is cozy, charming and relaxing with cozy outdoor cushioned lounge chairs, fire pits, elevated high tops highlighting gorgeous views and a covered area, perfect in case it's sprinkling outside. We came opening weekend on Memorial Day, and our host let us have our pick of where we would like sit and we seated ourselves around a cozy firepit. My only complaint about our visit, was once we were seated we were given a list of ten delicious cocktails and once our server came to take our order, she said that none of the cocktails on the menu of ten drinks listed, were available except for two because she said they didn't have any of the ingredients. We thought that was a bit bizarre to not be prepared to serve any of the cocktails on their menu for their opening weekend. We ordered off menu, and I had my go-to, an Aperol Spritz, which was tasty, and my boyfriend ordered a beer. We saw a lot of people also ordering French 75s and espresso martinis, also off-menu. Topa was, however, able to offer a small food menu with tapas and mediterranean inspired small plates. We saw a lot of people ordering bread service, which came with focaccia, garlic toasted pita, and crispy lavash served with various dips. They also had items like skewers, lamb frites, and empanadas on their menu. Topa is also close to For the Love of Sugar, The Eagle, Empire, and Barcade, if you're looking for places to explore after your visit. We had a nice time at Topa and we-'re looking forward to visiting on another summer evening soon.

Views were amazing, staff was attentive and courteous. The drinks were a bit small for the price but were delicious. I recommend the Monolith and the Capri. Food was excellent as well. We had the chopped salad, empanadas and bread with hummus and zhug dips. Would return

We attended the grand opening tonight and it seemed to go very smoothly. We had reservations, which I highly recommend. If it were warmer, or a weekend, I believe this place would have been slammed. It was rather chilly so we chose to sit inside at the bar. At first I was worried because many rooftop bars only have great views if you sit on the actual outside patio. But my fears were unnecessary. The indoor bar even had spectacular views. You can basically see the entire city up here. I absolutely loved it! They had a nice variety of cocktails, I didn't really check out the wine or beer list. Their menu was very small. I would like to see more options but I'm assuming that would come. They had a variety of small plates available. We chose to split the Empanadas and I believe Quail (?) Croquets. The empanadas were delicious! I could eat a dozen. The Croquets weren't my favorite but to be fair, I wasn't feeling well so my taste buds may have been altered. The couple next to us got the lamb and that looked incredible. I was tempted to try one of each dish but for reined in. Lol. All of the drinks were fabulous, The service was great, particularly for a grand opening! You could tell they had an experienced staff. Ambiance was great and the views were outstanding. I can't wait to come back on a warm day and enjoy the beautiful views!

Here is the lay of the land: Check in at the little red table in the center of the outdoor courtyard if you want "full service". - which means eating and drinking at a table with wait staff. It is not seat yourself at the outdoor tables, like we originally thought. There is a nice sized bar indoors and seating at the bar is first come first served. We ordered several of the small plate "snacks" and I can tell you that the hummus is not to be missed. It is served with (homemade?) tortilla chips that are absolutely addictive. They have lots of choices for wine, beer, and cocktails. Towards the back entrance of the property, there is a drink truck where you can also order "walkaway" food and drinks. Not entirely sure where you sit with the food/drinks you order, as most of the seating seemed reserved for full service. Additionally, there is a photo booth for pics (long line) and Warda Patisserie is right next door and accessible through a garden walkway.

The inside restaurant area is also beautiful. We wanted to sit inside at the bar, so we waited for some seats to open up. If you want to sit outside, all you have to do is order at the bar and they'll serve your drinks in plastic cups for you to take outside. The rhubarb pie punch was so delicious I had to order it twice! Probably one of my favorite cocktails I've ever had. I also ordered the maurixio cattelan, which tasted like ginger ale. For a snack before dinner, we chose to get the burrata and it was so refreshing. The service was great and our bartender was super friendly! The logo with the little lamb is adorable. I bought one of their wine glasses with their logo on it too for just $10.

Our server was very welcoming and helped to set up our food order into courses that allowed us a very relaxing evening Cocktails were really good. I had a Last Word and it was very well done. The restaurant is decorated very nicely with warm wood trim. The bar area looked stellar and very French-bistro like. I will sit there next time No so Highs Food was good, but just OK. Between the two of us we had the beet salad, burger and steak tartare. Burger was good, but not the best smash burger that I've had. Beet salad was fine, however the cream cheese was a bit overpowering against the orange oil. It was dying for some citrus. Steak tartare was a bit dry, meaning that a small dab of olive oil would have added to the richness and overall mouth feel. I did not really taste the egg although I did see a dab of yolk on the tartare. Needed a bit of salt also to enhance the taste Menu was small, but it did cover a cross section of French bistro dishes. All in all, I thought it was a bit overpriced. So I will have to consider returning for a full meal. I would come back for a burger and beer at the bar.

I was very pleasantly surprised! The space is beautiful, classy, and airy. We sat at the bar and had a nice chat -- the music was at a good volume. I only ordered wine -- their wine list is alright. Not bad for a bar that's clearly not wine-focused. My wife and a friend had cocktails and they both were good, particularly their espresso martini. For food, we shared patatas bravas, tortilla española, and croquetas de jamon, and they were all delicious. I'd legit come back for a full dinner. My only reason to not give this 5 stars is the drink service was very slow, even though the place wasn't busy. The two bartenders seemed friendly enough but weren't communicating very well, and kept forgetting to take and/or bring our orders. We also asked for the check and they kept forgetting to bring it until we asked again. They could have been upfront about this, but our waiter didn't tell us until after bringing us drinks, letting us see the menus, and after he started to take our orders. We essentially had to ask---what *do* you have? One pet peeve of mine is that they give everyone low ball glasses for water with no ice and a single, narrow carafe of water for the entire table. We had to continuously ask for more water. I tried the espresso no-tini ($11), a mocktail. It was good, but came in cordial glass and was essentially just a shot of chilled espresso. The setas ($14) were listed as a local wild mushroom blend with garlic and lemon. It was probably about a half cup of mushrooms, grilled, and served in a saucer. Finally, the charcuterie y queso ($21) was meat, cheese, sourdough, mustard, pickles, and honey. Everything was very salty and with no variation. It needed balance with a soft cheese, spice, or more sweetness. My charcuterie plate didn't come out until about an hour plus after we ordered, after multiple asks. It's hard to justify the delay when it's just hard cheese and meat, they didn't have to cook, and there were few other customers. (Essentially, we forgot). I still had a wonderful time with my friends in a beautiful space, but I wouldn't come here to eat again. The menu is elaboratey described dishes that come in very small portions and with ingredients that don't live up to the names.
