My review is for their rug cleaning service, not for shopping (for now..). I found Barry and Diana here on yelp, and feel I owe it to them and other vintage rug owners to write about their services. I have a small (3x5) vintage rug that I found at the Rose Bowl flea market for only $30...it's stained, has holes, and I love it. After never having it cleaned (even after I bought it), and a year of dust, dirt, and dog hair collecting, I was out to have it cleaned. I called several places, only to be quoted at $75-$150 for cleaning this small rug! I know it's delicate and important for quality, but damn! Then I called Barry, who quoted me $30...uh, yes please. I dropped it off at their apartment 5 minutes away from me, and 2 weeks later it is back and beautiful! It took that long because my rug was THAT dirty and Barry cleaned it twice...at no extra charge. The colors have never been so vibrant. I almost want to keep my dog off of it now (impossible) because it looks too good. He also told me what Native American tribe and region it came from, as well as what it could be worth if I had the holes and fraying fixed. I highly recommend Topanga Rugs! We made the mistake of buying all new furniture and then adopting a new puppy! Oh well, sh*t happens (literally). Our new little baby muffin decided to pee and poop on our silk cord rug, two of our overdye turkish rugs, and our persian wool rug. We were so distraught about what to do and I'm very happy that I found Topanga Rugs on Yelp. The reviews are stellar for a reason. Barry and Diana really know what they're doing. The prices are reasonable (price per sqft), plus an extra charge for urine stains, $50 pickup or dropoff charge and they're willing to work with your schedule for deliveries. The silk cord rug I was really worried about since our puppy peed on 3 different areas and the carpet cleaner I used seemed to only make things worse. To my excitement the rug came back looking BRAND NEW! I was in shock. The overdyed rugs came out looking good too, but one area where I had used resolve (which Barry told me to never use on rugs since it makes things worse!) left a discoloration stain that couldn't be fixed. I brought them an inexpensive pet soiled rug that is nothing special, but I like it and it goes with the room. It was the best $75, I ever spent. The rug came back actively smelling good. They did a terrific job on 2 rugs. Nice couple. Diana, who organizes the work, is very pleasant, friendly and efficient to work with. Our carpets came out so clean, which really shows on the one oriental with a cream background. I used another rug cleaner before who also did a fine job but left a very strong and unpleasant perfume smell in the rugs that took a long time to go away. I was up Topanga Canyon and pulled over Jalan Jalan as I saw a beautiful rug hanging on the fence and it caught my eye. They have a waterfall and cool Budda statutes everywhere. Barry was very patient and helpful and took the rug down to show it to me on the ground. It didn't look like the right size so we went into his showroom and looked at several other rugs. I saw one that I thought would be perfect and he suggested I take it and show it to my husband. We just moved into a new house in Venice and needed a living room rug. When I took it home and my husband and I put it down that was it. It was perfect! I later got a rug pad from him and he told me how to clean spots at home and maintain it. The mother of a good friend of mine needed to get her Oriental rugs cleaned & was really confused as to the process etc. I found Topanga Rugs & they did a fabulous job. For one thing there wasn't just a few rugs.. there was a large living room, dining room & den with room size rugs as well as many smaller rugs in the hallway & under tables. Diana, one of the owners of Topanga Rugs, said as there was furniture involved she would get a trusted moving company to get the rugs rolled up to be cleaned. The day of the pickup she was there with Barry & we went over each rug. The moving guys were great.. were able to get everything picked up & lifted with no damage to any furniture. Barry, who is the rug expert of all times, said once the rugs were cleaned he give us a price on any repairs that they needed. One needed some new fringe & several needed some small repairs. One rug we thought wasn't worth much turned out to be an antique Persian rug worth quite a lot.& after it was cleaned & repaired we saw how beautiufl it really was. We also needed an appraisal for insurance which Barry did as he's a certitfied appraiser of Oriental & kilim rugs. The rugs look great now & we're really happy with their services. I brought my grandfather's oriental carpet (which Barry identified immediately as a Farahan Sarouk rug made early last century) that had never been cleaned with car hair all over it, and was fraying at the edges. I have an old rug my mother left me years ago and I had no idea of where it was from. The sides were coming apart & it had holes, so I didn't know if it was worth keeping. I took it to Topanga Rugs. Barry the owner, took out his Sotheby's & other textile books & showed me almost the same rug that was in the catalogue. I had no idea that it was a collectible... a Caucasian Kuba. He said "Don't even touch it; put it on the wall." He even gave me a free appraisal. I had some other commercial rugs that needed cleaning which he did & they came out great. My review is for the rug cleaning service Topanga Rugs offers. I have an awesome Kilm rug that I found at a local flea market... which was not even for sale, but actually laid out underneath a display table when I offered to buy it. The rug was incredibly dirty and had two fairly big, old, blackened gum spots on it... deep within the fibers. I found Topanga Rugs through yelp and their price was more than reasonable. They were extremely nice, educated me about the rug, and said they would do their best with the gum situation. After the first washing, they called me to say that another washing was needed to get the gum out, but I let them know I was on a tight budget and was satisfied with just the single wash. They were very understanding and actually washed the rug a second time for no charge just because the gum became a challenge to them! How nice! Its not often that you find a company that goes the extra mile out of kindness and appreciation for the work they do, more so than simply making a profit! The rug looks great! Bright colors (some I never even noticed before bc it was so dirty), and there is no gum! I would definitely recommend their services, for their affordability, kindness, and expertise. read more
