Sigh. The low ratings are in part because someone got bad oysters here and someone else got thrown out for riding an electric scooter in the store. I wish I was more of a partier, as there was a decent assortment of hard ciders but only in multi-packs. In a perfect world, Tops would try to bring some of its Buffalo-area favorites like loganberry drink further south, but at least they have Yancey's cheese curds. Prices are the same as anywhere else but what bothers me is I purchased a half gallon of 1/2 and 1/2 from Byrne Dairy here and it was completely curtailed a full 2 weeks before the sell date. Many out there have "dissed" this store. And in the early "Tops" takeover days I might agree with you. I was there today and loaded up a pretty hefty shopping cart. I cannot find any faults with the way the store is currently run or set up. I find their pricing extremely competitive. On par with the area market leader "Shop Rite"! And in some cases they can beat Shop Rite and you'll have a better shopping experience. And their "app" beats Shop Rite's hands down. And you won't have the pricing discrepancies that plauge the Shop Rite store. Every item that was supposed to be on sale or stated on the shelf was properly reflected on my register tape. NO ERRORS! Shout out to Mike DuBois, the Grocery Manager in the New Paltz store. We purchased a 5-piece glass table and chair set for our deck. He started to disassemble the floor model, thinking there was none in-stock. He went back to the storeroom and found the last boxed set and reassembled the floor model. Bob brought the cartons from the storeroom to our car. He went above and beyond to help us load and bungee cord the cartons to our car's trunk for safe transport home. Big thumbs up! read more

I wanted to like this store, but sadly there are too many issues. The olive bar is a good feature since Shoprite doesn't have one. Unfortunately NOTHING is labeled, so we have no idea what anything is. Some look like they have hot pepper flakes in the mix, some look like they have some kind of cheese inside - but WHAT KIND? There are at least two DOZEN types of olives/salads in there - with nothing labeled. I took my chance and picked up a few things. Then I went over to pick up some containers of yogurt. I found the flavor I like, and I grabbed a few. Then I decided (thankfully) to check the expiration date. It was Saturday, October 21 when I was in there shopping. The first one I picked up had a date of 10/25. Kind of close - so I checked all of them. Not only did I find more short-dated, but I found one with a date of 10/05!!! Yes, I triple-checked because I thought for sure I was reading it wrong. Nope - the date was more than two full weeks past. Needless to say, I bought a couple of the short-dated containers, but would not buy more since by the time I get to eat them later in the week, they would be past their date. It is doubtful I will be back here - there is no reason to shop at this store. Why couldn't they have put a great store like Trader Joe's in this spot? read more

How the hell did that happen so quick and efficiently, sure, but where are my Slim Jim's, Rolling Paper and six pack of Rolling Rock ??!!? COVID ALERT!!!! The corporate office is not enforcing the executive order requiring people to wear face coverings in their store. For the second time in a week, I have complained to the customer service personnel about people going around the store without masks. They gave me a number to call and the corporate office said they are not requiring shoppers in their stores to comply with the order. Somebody did the math and determined it would be more profitable to put their employees and customers at risk rather than address the few inconsiderate people putting others at risk. Have not been in a Tops Market in 11 years since no longer in western NY. This store was very good. Rep in customer service was friendly and efficient providing me a Bonus Plus Card. A store employee in an aisle warmly greeted me on his initiative. Cashier at aisle 9 was friendly and professional. The store was clean and products were well supplied and most prices were good. Had hoped to find Kimmelweck rolls but didn't, however, did find a 12 pack of Pepsi cola soda shop cream soda. Overall, the store was very easy to say well recommended! There's a kid that works named Oceanus, and he is the most elite cashier I have ever had the honor of allowing handle my groceries. The finesse with which he bagged my produce, the way he nestled my tender heirloom tomato into a romaine lettuce bed, as if swaddling a newborn child, rendered me speechless. Only a single tear managed to escape my eye as I stared in complete awe. I watched him size me up and just as I suspected, pack my bags accordingly to about how much I can curl with each arm (I checked this when I got home by weighing the bags: 10 pounds for my right arm, 7.5 for my left, exactly how much I lift at the gym). As if that level of care and attentiveness wasn't enough, in what is what I assume was an extra effort on his part to prevent tearing of the paper bags provided by the store, Oceanus somehow managed to make all my items fit perfectly together in the bag despite their irregular shapes and sizes. I'm pretty sure I saw his name as the high score on a Tetris machine on the NJ boardwalk, so that makes sense. That night as I lay awake, playing the encounter over in over in head, I came to the realization that the only way that he could have pulled off such a god-like level of bagging was if he was the Avatar, master of all four condiments (mayo, mustard, ketchup, and sriracha). I will be returning and have recommended this establishment to all my family, friends, and any stranger who will listen. read more

I want to start by saying that I'm from out of the area and was so happy to see Tops had such a great bakery area. We purchased a cheese cake for our daughter and her friends and it was delicious! The store was clean and well lit. They had so much more than the other local supermarket. The cashier was super friendly and my daughter put her phone number in and said that she recently got a free $25 gift card for gas from this store. We were pleasantly surprised. I've never had fond memories of very many Tops Markets in the past, so when I encounter a Tops, I tend to shy away and look towards finding other supermarkets, but this one was very selective of one of those I just couldn't keep my mind on moving very far away from. Had it not been for an appointment at a certain time, I probably would have stayed to look for more things. We went in here to loafe and look for several minutes but by the end we ended up with a few things as well as a freebie item from the Monopoly board game piece instant win pieces which we'll eventually use. I was very pleased with this store. I liked that their aisles were neat and clean, and even that at the registers each register had a sign of todays' date (for those wishing to write a check, which my mother says she has seen at our Rhinebeck store but I haven't seen.) Oh well. Yes, there weren't an overabundance of employees manning the store aisles. At one point we were looking for a specific product, and I ended up asking another customer if they were an employee (because they sure looked like they were from their ensemble). We knew we had seen the product, but we didn't know exactly where it was. It took us several more seconds to loaf a little more to re-trace our walking, and we did eventually find it. Didn't like the power carts we were using. When we got there, the electric-powered cart apparently had been charging (while the second one was considered to be "broken"), but this one just didn't have enough "juice" to make it around the outside back to inside and I almost left the cart in the middle of the roadway because it almost stalled on me in the process. Enlarge the sliding exit doorway. It felt like the cart wasn't going to make it through, until I got right under it. It was very narrow and at one point, before the electric cart got up to the door, the door even closed on me upon exit and opened real slow thereafter. The one problem we had was in the store's ability to keep an up-to-date database of correct product prices. The store shelves said one thing, but once we got up to the register we were told another. We got brownie mix, and to make sure the price was clarified, we ended up having the bagger go back and check the price - we're both wondering how many others got cheated off of the wrong prices because they didn't check over their totals first. read more

Huge (and I mean HUGE) grocery store in New Paltz. In town itself, the pickings are slim (you can find great farm stands and smaller grocery stores outside of New Paltz itself), so Tops is one of the only games in town. I have only purchased staples here, such as cereal and toiletries (no produce or anything gourmet). That being said, they really have a huge selection of the basics. Parking is ample and the employees seemed friendly enough. read more

I gave this store as much as my business as I did when it was Stop and Shop, I really hoped it would be good. They are too expensive on name brand items and do not offer enough store brand versions to help save money. The items in the freezers are covered in frost. These were a constant problem when the store was Stop and Shop. I can only assume they never updated them. For weeks I was able to purchase whole grain wheat bread with no high fructose corn syrup (Vermont brand) and now all that is on the shelf is Sara Lee. I have been driving to Poughkeepsie to do my food shopping and was told that the Topps in New Paltz was going to close. I really hope that doesn't happen because an empty supermarket usually stays an empty supermarket, even one that's bad is better than not having another store. Don't get me started on the Shoprite here in town. It's too small and in dire need of a cleaning. read more

Friendly market? Not! Although this TOPS is spacious, clean, and pleasantly laid out, the pleassantness stops there. On a recent visit of convenience, I found the staff uninformed, unfriendly, and unhappy in their demeanor. Hostile checkout clerk refused to ring up my six-pack of beer--and $120 worth of staples--without a government ID (I'm 77), took a picture of my driving license, then proceeded to write down the number and slip it into his pocket. What's up with that? And what is the morale problem here? By the way, prices are higher here than any other local supermarket. To save money and avoid being creeped-out I suggest shopping at the friendly, helpful, and well-stocked supermarket up the road. read more

Tops is a pretty decent grocery store. They have lower prices on some items with a tops card just like stop and shop did. I like the tops brand cookies and diet sodas they're pretty good. I miss the managers special with discount prices; I don't know why they got rid of it it was awesome to find such low priced stuff. The fresh ground beef packaged daily is pretty good id recommend it its very cheap I got a pound and a half for 3.26. Also they have a directory in the back of the store that says whats in each isle which is helpful for finding things late at night when there aren't many employees to ask. read more

Well where do I start? I've been trying to give this store a chance since they took over when Stop and Shop left. One credit I can give them is that they retained a lot of the SandS staff. Other than that, their prices are outrageous. And when they do have a sale, they are pushing Tops products which are substandard quality or name brands with expiration dates. The produce is not good quality. I run through the organic section, the prices are so ridiculous. They had a sale on seafood last week and we had to throw it out because we could not get past the smell. So if it's not HNC in the same strip mall or SR across the street (which has amazing sales btw), or G's seafood across the street (which is expensive but I guarantee you won't be gagging when you cook anything you get from there) then thankfully we are blessed with a great farm market across the bridge and abundant organic farmers, bee keepers and more in our area. Tops doesn't belong here. Matter of fact, I have no idea where the do belong. Since it's doubtful they will last, I'm hoping for an AFFM, or even a Wegs!! Be careful if you go there, esp read expiration dates and you probably just want to avoid the fish altogether. read more
