Well of course I didn't have some ingredients that I needed for a recipe and didn't want to drive to my usual supermarket. So I figured , what are the odds that Tops won't have tomato paste and cumin? I'll just run over there and grab those few things there. Oddly the store didn't seem crowded but there were only about ten carts to pick from. They do have wipes to clean them with, so I did that and went in with high hopes. Why I didn't take a picture of the spice section I can only attribute to the shock of it. I can honestly say I've never seen a spice section that looked like this. I'm not sure what happened, if there is a spice festival I wasn't invited to perhaps, but there was row after row after row of empty spices. But for Ginger , and coriander everything else was gone!! I found the other items I was looking for. And the rest of the store looked to be in good shape. There was no wait to check out and the clerk was very pleasant and helpful. I'm very sure she was cheerful under her mask. She packed my bag and reminded me that I had a soda on the counter to drink and not to forget it. And even when I went out to the parking lot and loaded my car, the young man saw me getting ready to take my cart back to the store and came over from across the parking lot to get it from me and saved me the trip back. So I was pleasantly surprised by my trip to Tops at the University Plaza today , but I do wonder what event is taking place that required all the spices to be almost completely gone??? read more

Store 710. Managed to comparison shop at one of our allegedly "higher priced" markets. Eggs: "Large"? Tops are SMALL at best, and I compared. Price? $3 MORE at TOPS for "large" eggs that are visibly smaller. Butter: almost $2 MORE at TOPS. Coffee: same brand, $2 MORE at TOPS. Dairy products: Limited to 2 brands at TOPS, similar products at the "competition", again, $2 MORE at TOPS and better "Sell By" dates at the competition. Beef? Even the employees of TOPS won't buy their own beef because it smells "off" and goes bad within a day of purchase. Locally, VERY FEW buy their beef because it makes them ill. SO, I purchased the "Grass Fed Organic" pre-packaged beef at almost $12/lb . In the refrigerator, 3 days later, it was grey, smelled as if it had died! Useless. Potatoes? Tops brand, 5;b bag. 3 days later, half the bag had rotted, water in the bag and the stench was so bad I had to take the whole thing and bury it DEEP in the back yard! Couldn't put it in the garbage bin and wouldn't put it in the car to return. All of this is common, regular, normal for Tops. And when I telephoned "Corporate", I was told "Sorry you were inconvenienced." and hung up on. They have no competition in town so obviously, they don't have to care. Buyer beware. read more

Purchased a porterhouse steak today and it had to be the worst piece of meat I've ever had. Seriously, I can't believe I paid for this piece of rubber. I kept looking for the tire brand logo on the meat. I know how to cook as I've done it for decades. I had a meat thermometer in it so when it reached the medium rare temperature I assumed it was done. I cut into and confirmed some pink inside. Then I took my first bite and knew this was absolutely a waste of money. Never again Tops. read more

This is one of my favorite tops locations. Favorite because it's easy to get to for me, has easy parking, and usually isn't very crowded. The fruit and vegetable section which is usually why am there is pretty good. With Covid more people are shopping locally and less people are shopping at Wegmans because it's so crowded all the time, so the fruits and vegetables are turning over more quickly here it seems. The Tops in University Plaza is renovated on the inside and has a different layout than most locations. They're decked out with UB stuff to attract college students, but when I came in during the week around 3, I didn't really see any college students there. It seems like a smaller location, but only came for 2 things (which they had), so can't tell if their selection is truly limited. I came for a birthday cake and the woman working the bakery did a great job fitting "Happy 40th Birthday Greg" onto a tiny Oreo cake. This is such a nice touch and they don't charge to personalize it either! Lines - only two cashiers were open and the self checkout. The lines were pretty long for the store seeming quiet. Before I moved into Kenmore this past September,this was my "go to" Tops. I had always preferred the one on Elmwood,but the one at University Plaza was closer,so I always went there unless it was after midnight. Well,today,the store had everything I wanted,plus more. I saw a bunch of new things that I have yet to see at the Elmwood location. I already know this store by heart,so I knew where to look for everything. But,like I said,they must've updated it or something since September because I was much more satisfied at this location this time. The only problem I had today was that there was only 1 register open,(which I never go to anyways),but it made the self checkout longer ,when there are only 4 checkouts to begin with & 1 was out of order. SOOOOO,today,there were only 3. The lady on the register kept wandering off & was not very helpful to those who needed her. Other than that,it was a good shopping experience. read more

Having worked at Tops for part of 3 years in retirement I see both pro's and con's with this grocery chain . I hired people with disabilities while a Plant Supervisor at Tyco and Tops does also . They have some great employees that I have enjoyed working with . Great fresh cut meat in store, not the vacuum sealed injected stuff. Cons, Tyco pays their P.T. terrible ! It's not even minimum wage when they take out Union dues . No premium pay for working Sunday's and only $1 hour more during Holiday's . During the Covid pandemic FULL- TIMERS were given an extra $2 hour and Part Timers got NOTHING . The turn-over at Tops especially for the Part Timers is the worse I have ever seen in any business in my 43 years working . Remember the saying ( A fence is only as strong as it's weakest link ! ) Value and treat ALL your employees fairly . read more

My experience at this Tops is usually very good. I only visit when I need something as this Tops is conveniently located. There is lots of parking, cashiers are often welcoming and nice, and items are organized and well-stocked. The only time I went to a cashier instead of self-check was due to a large purchase that participated in their Top's Monopoly. I wish the self-checkouts accepted cash. I prefer self-checkout especially since I don't often make large purchases, but I always need to pay with a card when using a self-checkout machine. read more

that was probably the worst shopping experience I've ever had. Numerous people were having the same troubles as we were, the poor worker was running in circles in the self check out area. You cannot bag your items as you scan them because it demands that you weigh everything and even when we tried to put in the fact that we had three shopping bags and tried to weigh them it wouldn't work. After putting in my phone number for the discounts, apparently I did it wrong, which the system never told me , so as we rang up all our items, none of the sale prices came up nor would the coupons scan. We had to call the guy over probably five or six times just to cash out 20 items. I was complaining of what a horrible shopping experience we were having when one of the employees told me "see you later" just to be a smart ass . We will Never go back. It is super close to me but I'd rather jump in the car and head the opposite direction to Weggies, Aldi or even international Tops on Maple. This is by far the worst tops in the area. Unfortunately it is the one closest to my house. It's always dirty and I would rather drive farther than come to this tops. I am standing in line right now. There are only two registers open with at least 6-8 customers at each. The easy scan has a line just as long. This is not something new. It's like this every time I stop in here for something. Fun fact.... I have not moved in line since I started writing this review. The selection of produce is minimal, although they offer a wide variety of gallon jugs of juices and fruit punches. If this was a convenience store (which it is for me), it would receive 5 stars. As a grocery store though, it leaves a lot to be desired. It's in a convenient location for University students who live on South campus and for those of us who are living around there (it's the closest 'grocery' store to my house). Unfortunately, that's about its only plus -- it's convenient. Their selection is not great. For instance, they source their oranges from OceanSpray and they are neither tasty nor too cheap (although cheaper than convenience store prices). You can get your necessities here and generally find what you're looking for, but don't expect too much otherwise. read more

I am very disappointed again today. Sent my husband to Tops market in Erie Pa. West 26th st. They had hamburg on sale 85% ground BOGO. My husband didn't realize he didn't get a deal after all. They charged $5.89 a pound. He got 4 for me. OUCH Packs were small about 2. 1/2 ponds to 3 pounds. Sticker shock. Then I get the meat ALL DARK MEAT in the middle. Only a thin layer of red wrapped around the dark. This is. Unbelievable. I think I will be going to our newly opened meat market from now on. I like Tops because it is a small store. Every single checkout lane has a sign that says 15 items or less forcing you to use the self check out...which I hate because they don't work well. I shopped at the Tops on Union Rd in Buffalo and it was a filthy mess. I made the mistake of using the women's bathroom and was appalled. There was feces smeared on the walls, toilet and floor, and bits of toilet paper everywher. It was obvious that this detritus had been there for more than just that day. This Tops is actually rather awesome. Shoppers, many of the other reviews on this website are rather outdated and do not take into account the numerous changes and updates that the store has made. Well, what do you need from a grocery store? You need groceries, produce, meats, and toiletries. Oh, and you should be able to get in and out of the store with minimal hassle, minimal fuss. Make no mistake about it. This Tops location doesn't offer a ton of perks. It doesn't offer artisanal pizza, Indian buffet, or a restaurant-sized olive bar. Nuh-uh. This is a place to come for food to bring home and cook. For a store its size, the produce section at this Tops is astonishingly good, with an excellent selection of somewhat rare items like plantains and avocados or seasonal items like starfruit, Asian pears and so forth. On a daily basis, this far smaller Tops will actually put out MORE plantains, more avocados than Wegman's Alberta or Wegman's Amherst. Deli selection isn't extensive, just the staples at staple prices. Fish selection isn't extensive, just the staples at staple prices. Meat selection isn't extensive, just meat selection at meat prices. Bulk selection is reasonable but doesn't offer many options that vegans or alternative foods eaters might prefer. It also doesn't have any chocolate covered coffee beans, which is one of the few sore points for me. Their bakery section offers muffins, cakes, rolls, cookies, brownies, naan, and the staples. You won't find the 1,000 different options here like you would at a Wegman's or, indeed, and Orchard Fresh. (This is actually a plus point for me. Why get these items at a Wegman's when you could patronize a local pastry shoppe that actually has a pastry chef working there?!?!) I shudder at the thought of visiting Wegman's if only because I know that the place will be packed, that I will have a damned difficult time gauging lines and checking out. You won't have any such difficulty at this store. With four automated checkout lines (the same as a Wegman's Alberta store that operates at a much higher customer volume) and at least two conventional lines always open, I have never had a problem getting out of there quickly. No horror stories of ten-minute lines, of whole cell phone conversations occurring while queued. Lastly, I would like to address the points that several other reviewers have raised regarding cleanliness. Several years back, I did have significant qualms about the quality of the management of the store. Heck, my family even sang little ditties about its issues. Nowadays, any such worries have vanished. New management came in and cleaned house. The store boasts attractive displays and seems to take pride in ensuring that anything disrupted is attended cleanly. Versus Wegman's, you will never find peels, husks, or leaves on the floor of the produce section. You will never find crumbs or straggly bits around the bulk section. If you live in the University Heights area, this is an excellent option for getting everything you need. read more

This is my "only when in dire need of a convenient solution" store. It is pretty crummy compared to its brethren. The produce section is small and not good. When buying canned items there, I have a hard time finding a can without a dent in it. I tried to buy beans there the other day and the bag was open. My theory is that this is where all the rejected products go when management deems them unacceptable for other locations...I'm guessing their thought is "oh, college kids won't mind/notice." The positives are it's conveniently located just off Main, it had a discount bin where I've gotten some great deals, and much to my surprise (considering the run down nature of the products), I've experienced some good customer service there. read more

Just had the fish fry 2021 version...very underwhelming. Fish size is small, thin, and not very appealing. Fries were mediocre. I will say the cole slaw and macaroni salad were pretty good. Sunday 7am. Employee "Nikki" tried to send me away twice because she was too lazy to follow her colleague's "James" simple instructions on executing a campus cash payment. "James" did fix the problem, though. This "Nikki" didn't have a name tag, so I asked another employee for this name. The self-checkout wasn't on - that's fine, they were just opening. Because of this I was looking at the checkout lines and was sent there a second time playing a short hide-and-seek to find the nonchalant "Nikki". One of many inconsistencies I've experienced here. This, however, is the worst experience I have had here: this is refusal to take a customer's business. I didn't one-star because I've been going here for a long time and I've had a no-nonsense/polite experience with *some* employees every single time. read more

Every time I come to this location there is an issue with something and not s friendly customer service. This Saturday, when it's a pretty busy time and tons of people doing their grocery shopping, they had one register open so of course there is a HUGE line. After I spent about 10 min in line a manager comes in closes the line I was in and says she is opening another register so now of course you have people from the back of a line with carts full of groceries jump in. Don't go to this market forever! ! ! I went to this market to buy a box beer, and when I was doing the self check. There are two guys (We don't know each other!)come to me and ask me some questions. Then the workers think I am with these guys. Ask me and that two guys ID so that I can't buy the beers cuz they don't take the ID. I explain again and again. The workers just don't listen. On vacation visiting my sister I stopped in this TOPS marketplace and will never shop there again! After I checked out and walked to the entrance of this store I turned around and the cashier was pointing in my direction and a customer was doing the same thing and they were both laughing so hard at what I'll never know! I often wish it was possible to kick my in the butt , because every single time I come to this store I remember how I said last time was gonna be the last time ? This store along with the one on Jefferson are running neck in neck for the worst places to shop ever !!! Between the extremely Long customer service Lines or Customer service reps who move slower then snails, I can't figure out what I hate worst . This store never has any fried chicken pass 6 pm , and let's not forget the time I called to be sure they had chicken they said some would be out in the next 15 mins so I go there when I arrive there is a lady who ordered 2 pans of chicken to be ready at 3. But she didn't get there til 6 ??? She then decided she didn't want the 2 pans of chicken that had been sitting there waiting for her for 3 hrs. She wanted new/fresh chicken!!! So what did they do (Tops management) they give her ALL the fresh chicken that had just been cooked and apologized to the rest of the people with a couple $2.00 off coupons.
