First of all, I love Torchy's Tacos. The 1-star is for the Allen location exclusively. They earned it on the merits if two factors. 1. Cleanliness 2. Kitchen Skills The past several times I've been here, the restaurant was full but needed bussing. There was one older hispanic lady always working, trying to bus and wipe tables getting crushed by the rush. She's fine. As she struggled, the young servers were standing at the pick up counter chatting and waiting for their orders. Horrible. That is a management issue. Time to lean = Time to clean. Then, food quality. First off, someone keeps putting tortilla chips in cold oil. How can you tell? The chips come out rubbery and shiny. If the oil is not hot enough, it will soak into the food rather than be expelled by the evaporating water vapor. Next, the carne asada was rubbery and not cut properly. All pieces were stripped but still attached to each other by unbreakable sinewy gristle. The plastic knife I got from the counter had no chance. Two trips in a row I had to wrestle with my meat at this place. Again, other locations I have not experienced this. Unfortunately, this location is my closest. read more

My love for Torchy's is no secret, but somehow their secret menu was just that -- a secret -- until now. I was actually introduced to the secret menu, which is actually not much of a secret, by a friend who almost never goes out to eat. I looked it up online and there are five or so secret tacos. I'm currently working through the list and let me just say, these delicious flavorful tacos should not be kept in the dark! The Jack of clubs is a delicious melding of flavors and textures. Start with some black beans, add a fried egg, some potatoes, sprinkle on a bunch of crispy tortilla strips and cilantro, drizzle with sour cream and Diablo sauce and wooohooo!!! Damn good!! This morning I kept with the card theme and went with the Ace of Spades. It is a full link of spicy jalapeño sausage, beef brisket, a fried egg, queso, cilantro and sour cream and Diablo sauce. Can I get an amen!!! It is hearty as f**k!! You only need one, trust! I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu. As always, the folks at Torchy's are friendly, generally. This is taco nirvana. It's worth selling a kidney if you're down to your last nickel. The Green Chile Pork taco is good, the Democrat is awesome, and the Baja Shrimp was excellent. After trying those, I wanted one more - so I went to the counter and asked about the Trailer Park. "Could be better," the tacorista replied, a little too nonchalantly. I asked how. "We have a secret menu. You can get the Trailer Park Hillbilly style and it comes with chorizo, bacon.... " Fried chicken, chorizo and bacon? My mind went blank, and I hurt myself in the mad scramble for my wallet. It only took a few minutes for them to get me my taco, but I aged noticeably during that time. When I smelled the Hillbilly I felt like I got kicked in the drool gland. Good thing I always carry a towel. Eating it was an almost sexual experience, but done in 5 seconds instead of 30 - speed over stamina when you're plowing into a Hillbilly. It was phenomenal. I've visited this Torchy's countless times. I lived across the street and my work was 10 minutes away for about a year. Pros: The menu.. lots of wonderful staples.. the chicken fajita, the trailer park, crossroads.. and they do a taco of the month that is usually so much. I've seen a shrimp one (Scalliwag) and they once did a chicken 'n waffle style - they are always creative. They also have breakfast tacos served all day. Big plus. Their queso is unreal.. I cannot get enough and it's easy to get full just snacking on that. They also offer a small selection of beer and margaritas so you can also enjoy an adult beverage if you feel like. Located right off of McDermott, it's a very convenient location as well. Cons: Well, really just one. It's crowded. A lot. The line doesn't move that fast (they have two cashiers) and people usually aren't prepared once they get to the point of ordering. This also carries over into the parking lot - it's hard to park. You really cannot do a quick lunch there. If you go an off time - late lunch etc - it's a lot faster, but honestly, I went there for lunch mostly. Overall, to me, it's one of the places that the hype is justified. It's just good. I eliminated one star just for the crowds but aside from moving to a bigger place or remodeling I have no idea how they could battle that. Love me some Torchy's! I've tried most of the tacos here, and I always keep coming back to The Green Chile Pork, The Democrat, and the Crossroads. Delicious flavor combinations, and the pork/beef tastes great. You get your choice of flour or corn tortilla. My preference is corn....never tried their flour. They don't skimp on the meat and fillings so two tacos is more than enough for me. You have to try their chips and queso. It's one of my favorites and I always have to order it on every visit. I've tried a few of their Tacos of the Month, and some I liked way more than others. My favorite so far is The Scallywag which happens to be this months. It comes with coconut-battered shrimp, bacon, green chilies, jack cheese, pickled onions, cilantro, and is topped with a habanero peach jam. It was a perfect amount of sweetness and spiciness. It can get pretty busy during peak dining times but turnaround time for your food is fairly quick. read more

Torchy's apparently has quite a reputation emanating from Austin, Texas, so I was intrigued to see what the hubbub was all about now that one popped up in my back yard. I now know that reputation was well-deserved. Torchy's is a quick-casual place. You order at the counter, pay up, take an empty cup over to the fountain and get your drink. There are the usual suspects, plus some stand-out sodas, as well as iced tea and an intriguing smelling coffee. Jaritos sodas and authentic Mexican coca-cola are also available. There's now an interesting selection of beers as well as frozen margaritas. I started off with chips and guacamole. The chips were pale yellow, delightfully thin and crisp, and salted generously. I dipped them into an exemplary guacamole, bursting with fresh lime and avocado flavors as well as bright onions. It was a great combination of textures, with rustic chunks of avocado suspended in a smooth purée, all dusted with queso fresco. It was a huge appetizer for one lone diner, though: I'd skip the appetizer unless you're going to share. Shortly afterward my two tacos came out. I ordered the Holy Diver, shrimp marinated in achiote and grilled. They were served with pickled onions, jalapeños, queso fresco, and cilantro. The briny shrimp bursted with flavor and balanced well with the mild achiote. The vibrant pickled onions provided both eye-opening flavor and a pleasing crunch. A wedge of lime came standard and a quick squeeze woke up the entire taco. As a fool for fiery food, I absolutely had to try the Brush Fire taco. Stuffed into a tortilla is chicken jerked in the Jamaican style along with mango, sour cream, cilantro, and a powerful diablo sauce. That sauce was the bomb! Replete with habanero flavor, it provided an intense burn that opened wide my sinuses--yet not so hot that it hid habanero's characteristic flavors of apricot, citrus, and vanilla. Against the spice-laden chicken, it was the ideal complement. Other tacos that look good include the "Trailer Park" (fried chicken, green chiles, and "trashy style" queso sauce), the Democrat (shredded slow-roasted beef with tomatillo sauce), and the Republican (jalapeño sausage with poblano sauce). I look forward to trying them. There's also a burrito, market-style "street corn", and dessert items, as well as breakfast tacos (apparently they open as early as 7am). I know many will balk at the high price of the menu items, but I don't see price when I order food; these were damn good tacos, and totally worth it. I arrived right at 11am Friday, but as I left there was already an impressive line forming and the place was quite "hopping" with activity. Booths accommodate families and there are mezzanine tables as well as a bar for lone diners. Outdoor seating was also available. My electronics detected no free WiFi, but food came so quickly that I scarcely had time to even check-in on Yelp. Overall, Torchy's packs a lot of freshness and upscale combinations into a casual locale with addictive flavors. I can't wait to come back. read more

I'm really a fan! First of all, I walk in and the hostess compliments me on my lipstick. We have small talk, she was really sweet. So that was a good sign. I love Mexican food...quick and delicious. I gave up meat for Lent, so I was nervous that I wouldn't have many options to choose from, but boy was I wrong. Let me say, these were some of the biggest tacos I've ever eaten. Full of flavor and fillings. My mom wanted a chicken taco, but these tacos were far from your ordinary chicken taco, from what I saw when she opened it. The Chicken Fajita and the Trailer Park. The Trailer Park looked SO GOOD on the menu, I'll definitely be back to order that one after Easter. You got fried chicken, I was sold right there, topped with green chile, pico and cheese. Then, it doesn't stop there. You can "get it trashy". When she said that, I was like, " 'Scuse me?" lol...basically, they take off the lettuce and add queso. OMG! Now, the vegetarian in me, I loved all of my options, I went all in, got greedy and ordered the Migas, the #2 Breakfast Taco (potato, egg & cheese) and The Independent. They were all really good, full of deliciousness, but my favorite was the #2 and The Independent. The fried portabella mushroom strips were so meaty, really added to the substance of the taco. I added this creamy, green salsa to all of my tacos and I was muy bueno. Side Note to all of this...before you dig into the tacos, I know it'll be tempting not to, but order a starter of the green chile queso and chips. IT will change your life! read more

Appears to be going downhill. I originally gave this place 5 stars a few years ago. We have been regulars at this Allen, TX location for years. But if today's experience is any indicator, that will likely be coming to an end The dining room was incredibly annoying to be in because the music in the kitchen (different music) was played so it was at the same volume as the music in the dining room. When we brought this to the attention of the manager, he said he would take care of it. Several minutes later his solution became apparent: turn up the music in the dining room REALLY loud.. then, understandably other people began complaining about that. After watching the manager interact with the cooks it became apparent that keeping the cooks happy was more important than giving the customers a good experience, and that the manager was kind of clueless, inexperienced, and seemed to be unable to get his cooks to do the right thing. In spite of the fact that we recommended they change to one source of music, no one working there seemed to consider that an option. We also saw the manager attempt to resolve issues with food and drinks for other customers and same general ineptitude was consistently on display. read more

Walking into Torchy's at 12:05 PM on a Monday, I was greeted by 1) a long line, and 2) a brightly lit sign boasting "DAMN GOOD." Both the line and the sign were well-earned. Wait in line to order at the counter, grab a number and some drinks, and find a table. They'll bring you your food once it's done. The line was actually a little slow, but it was nice for me as a first timer because it gave me ample time to decide what I wanted (necessary because these are not your traditional tacos). I ultimately decided on the Baja Shrimp and the Democrat on corn tortillas. These tacos are huge, delicious, and flavorful. I actually ended up splitting my Democrat into two tacos since the tacos on corn tortillas come with two tortillas each. The Baja Shrimp was essentially like all other shrimp tacos I've had, but I really enjoyed it. Interestingly, I think the only real contribution of the shrimp is the texture (as it's hand-battered); the other parts of the taco are actually much more flavorful. All of the ingredients tasted fresh, and the different flavors went together very well--I really loved the chipotle sauce. It was mildly spicy with the sauce and jalapenos, but I think most people would be able to handle it. I loved the Democrat as well. I thought the barbacoa was a bit oily, but it was otherwise delicious. I actually didn't even try the sauce that came with it, but the avocado, meat, and queso fresco were so great that the taco was fantastic even without it. As a side note, this place looks more like a hipster coffee shop than a taqueria, but I totally dig it. So happy I finally went through this Texas rite of passage! read more

Torchy's Tacos are great for snacks imo. They have evolved from their humble beginnings as a food truck into a spacious dine-in area. I ordered the Republican with a flour tortilla even though I possess a True Blue connection. They didn't seem to judge me. It has a sausage in the middle like a hotdog and makes a very, very good snack. If you order a few tacos you could make a meal out of it. They also serve breakfast tacos, which may seem unorthodox to many, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do. The tables and chairs remind me of the ones at Chipotle. The soda machine serves Maine Root's organically sweetened soda products but unfortunately, it doesn't supply the blueberry soda like other amazing restaurants. Another reliable Torchy's location. It remains my gold standard of what a taco should be. Got takeout for the first time at any Torchy's and it was still delicious. (I'm always worried takeout will be blah by the time I get home and eat it.) So... why 4 stars for this location and 5 stars for the others? Simple. Some doofus working the one of the front registers (taking orders) asked everyone if they wanted to see the secret menu. Seriously? What's the point of a secret menu if you advertise it? This simply struck me as super lame and took the fun out of Torchy's secret menu. This kid clearly needed a swift kick in the huevos. Since they spoiled the fun anyway (sigh), try The Matador. It's excellent. I got one of those and one of my usual Dirty Sanchez. Perfection. I ordered my Matador from another guy working another register. Yeah, I felt kind of special, even though I knew I wasn't. While waiting for my order, Doofus came and started working the other register... and asked literally every person if they wanted to see the secret menu. So! Not so secret and not so special. I can't say enough about this place. I was ecstatic when I heard Torchy's was coming to Dallas.. THEN I was even MORE ECSTATIC when I found out ALLEN was getting one too! I could probably eat here every week if I wasn't going to gain like 500 pounds. I can confidently say that any of the "political" tacos are good. (I usually order whatever I feel like eating. My choice of "political" taco does not reflect on my beliefs.) Their sodas are not your typical. It's Maine Root (handcrafted sodas) everything. If you've never had Maine Root, you need to! Ace of spades here! It's oh so bad, but oh so good. Damn good as the sign in the back reads. I love the combination of items and their mini peg lets are tasty too. This has to be some of the most delicious queso (with the guac in there, ingenious and tasty). This location can get a bit hectic, not sure how others are laid out. Love all the different taco sauces but diablo is my favorite. It's light, and zippy. I wouldn't mind if it was considerably hotter though. Originally I was going to do a 5, but waited until we'd been to this one a few more times. Service folks are great, everything I eat is incredible but the fam is a touch mixed and don't dig it as much as I do. Predominately the salsa we ordered this last weekend was severely lacking. We each tried it about two chips worth and decided to pass on the rest, my wife isn't overly particular about her salsa, it just has to be "good". This one was just "lousy". Baby girl is an Ace of Spades convert too, it's pretty easy with that much awesome in a tortilla all together. Of course I have to get an extra cup of it and dump it on... delicious. Yes, I just experienced this chain for the first time recently. Where have I been? The tacos here have funky ingredients and are top notch quality. You may think you need more than 2, but don't do it. The tacos are so packed that it will fill you up. I had the Democrat and the Beef Fajita. I would have to say that the Democrat was the better one, but both were good. The combo really enhances your taste buds! The queso is good too and ask for more chips, as the ratio is a bit off, they will bring them for you at no charge. As you can see from the pictures, their tacos are huge! They really pile on the toppings, so you get the best bang for your buck, compared to other taco joints. We ordered the Wrangler, Trailer Park, Fried Avocado, and Street Corn. The only ones worth getting again were the Fried Avocado and Street Corn. The brisket on the Wrangler was overcooked and extremely dry and Trailer Park was too salty. Street Corn was burnt last time, but cooked just right on this visit.
