Velvet Taco is a great lunch spot in Allen whenever I'm craving creative, flavorful tacos. The food always feels carefully crafted, and the flavors are consistently on point. On this visit, I had the chimichurri steak taco and the Mexi-Cali shrimp taco, and both were excellent. The steak taco was packed with flavor, while the shrimp taco had a great balance of freshness and seasoning. You can really tell thought goes into the ingredients and combinations here. I also highly recommend saving room for the red velvet cake, it's absolutely worth it and a perfect way to finish the meal. This place is so nostalgic for me because it was the first restaurant I tried in Texas at 11:00 p.m. at night when I didn't know where to eat much less where I was. But taking bias out of the equation, the food quality and taste is amazing. I always order the Kobe Smash taco (recently changed to the Bacon Smash taco) and the Buffalo Chicken taco. My wife got the Grilled Salmon taco and loved it as well. For 4 huge tacos and a side of chips and guacamole, it was only $32. We came in today for the new bowls. Have I said how much we LOVE Velvet Taco? Love. Love. Love. So the new bowls. They have a limited selection of a few of their tacos, doubled in size without the taco and turned into a bowl. Unfortunately, they do not have my favorite Nashville Tofu taco turned into a bowl so I had to go with another option. On my companion's recommendation, I went with their favorite, the Korean pork. While I prefer not to eat meat, and I come to velvet taco for their veg options, since there was not a plentiful supply of that in their bowls, yet, I was happy to try this delicious bowl. It was really good. It was just too big. I recommend that they consider a large and small portion that we can choose from. It's like do I want one taco or two tacos? I want a large bowl or a small bowl. For my belly size definitely a small bowl would have worked or splitting a large bowl with a companion. Pro tip: the patio is great. And go for the Marg. I like this location a lot as my food is usually really good. This visit did not disappoint as my food was still yummy. This was my first time trying the Elotes. It was tasty, creamy and cheesy. It paired well with the blue tortilla chips. I will definitely get it again. It's like I had corn nachos. My taco is usually good. I get one on the menu, but substitute my protein. I enjoy the rotisserie chicken, avocado, corn and other components. It's always flavorful and fresh. My craving has been satisfied. They always forget my taco sauce. So I have to remind them. I've been trying to find a good taco joint to eat at for some time now and someone suggested I try Velvet Taco. I paid them a visit recently and ordered up a storm. I ordered the slow roasted angus brisket, grilled steak bacon smash burger, Mexican-cali shrimp, quesa birria duo and roasted chicken tacos. The queso looked good so I also ordered the chips and queso blanco and wanted to try the red curry queso so added that too. Overall I found the tacos were tasty, especially the slow roasted angus taco. The regular queso with chips I found to be really good. The space had a warm vibe to it and the workers were really friendly. I was grateful they had paper towels on hand otherwise I would've been swimming in the taco juice. We have been here twice in the last month, and we absolutely LOVE the fun and unique taco offerings! Will be coming back again and again! Our first time trying Velvet Taco was via takeout which was already really good, but we dined in our second time and that was even better since everything was super fresh. We have tried a variety of the tacos on their menu at this point, and I gotta say that almost all of them have been hits for me. My favorites are definitely the slow roasted angus brisket (which comes in a cheese encrusted tortilla!), beer battered cauliflower, picnic chicken, and Mexi-Cali shrimp (the shrimp is SO flavorful). The sweet chile shrimp has been the only one that was a miss -- the flavors were meh in my opinion and it just didn't hold up as well as the others. I finally found a vegan and vegetarian friendly taco shop that creates a unique blend of flavors even without adding meat or fish to the mix! The cauliflower taco was to die for, and the hot tofu one was equally as delicious!! We also paired the meal with chips and the incredible elote and white queso dip!! The elite was so amazing that it reminded me of the one I used to eat in Cuernavaca! The only dish I didn't try was the Red velvet cake but, fear not, I will be back for more very soon! read more

This is our first time trying the food at this place; we've previously had margaritas. We got there in the evening and it wasn't overly busy. We ordered several different items: - Classic guacamole (not pictured): this was as expected and had good flavor. - Crispy tots & egg: the highlights of this consist of how crispy the tots were and how perfectly sunny side up the egg was. However, it stops there. The goat cheese is a hard pass. It doesn't complement any of the other flavors and overpowers the crema or bacon. - Queso: was as expected and enjoyed by the whole table. - Brisket nachos: these were one of the better options we ordered, but were average. Nothing was great, flavor wise. - Mexi-cali shrimp taco: this was probably the best taco of all that we ordered. It was pleasant and paired well with the sriracha aioli. Could've dealt without the corn pico. - Chicken & waffle: I'm a sucker for this on any menu, but wish I never ordered this. The waffle taco was so soft and spongy; the exact opposite of what you'd want a taco vessel to be. They did too much with this; the taco was sweet, but the taco had a gravy and peppered bacon. It was a mess, both literally and flavor wise. - Rotisserie chicken: the chicken had a sweeter flavor and overall, didn't go well with the accompaniments. Overall, the use of the roasted corn pico was excessive and the flavor profiles of quite a few items we ordered, just didn't work. Plus I dislike that they don't have plates. My sister-in-law picked this place out for dinner and it was a winner. This taco spot offers the typical varieties, such as chicken, pork, beef, fish, veggie, and even breakfast tacos. However, the taco/toppings themselves are very unique, packed with flavor, and absolutely delicious. I had the Kobe Smash Burger Taco, the Mexi-Cali Shrimp Taco, the Sweet Chili Shrimp Taco, Elote & Chips for a side, and their Frozen Margarita. Let me just tell you that I was a happy girl and that Margarita was strong and was straight perfection with my meal. Not only was the food great but the service was too. At this location, we get good service and they are always pleasant if ever there is a mistake. Full transparency I was a Velvet Taco skeptic, I'm not usually a "gourmet" taco kinda guy, so walking in and seeing the menu I was a little overwhelmed. As I read the menu I felt like I was watching MasterChef and words like aioli, Napa slaw, and pickled fresnos had me sec9nd guessing my decision... and then it happened. I found the Chicken and Waffle taco, yes you read that right, my inner southern child screamed "winner winner chicken dinner" I was more composed on the outside. I ordered the combo with queso as the side... and as skeptical as I was when I walked in I became a believer with the first bite. I mean a waffle soft taco, nuff said. The only problem now is how do I go back to my old tacos!?!?! Next time I'll try something with steak, because there will definitely be a next time, and a third time, and a fourth time, and so on, and so on. That's enough about the food, let's talk about the service. Ordering was easy and the staff was extremely friendly. The food came out fast, fresh, and ready to eat.. When I first saw Velvet Taco, I was surprised. I was thrown a bit by the location and did not realize what I was walking into, not to mention the first thing I thought was "not another taco joint in Allen" I was very surprised when I walked into this location, and saw how crowded it was. I was excited to see what that had to offer after seeing the employees, and even the customers all just seemed happy, and seem to be enjoying their meals. The facial expressions were those of individuals that felt like they hit gold and didn't want to tell anyone. As my family and I started looking at the menu on the wall, a couple of the other customers started talking about suggestions, and by those suggestions, I was able to pick what I ordered. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Tikka taco, and the Buffalo Chicken taco. My wife ordered two tacos that were on the seafood side, but I didn't pay attention to the names. My Son opted for a Chicken Tikka taco as well as a Chiptole BBQ Pork taco. We ordered an appetizer as well, it was the Queso Blanco. I must mention, the staff is awesome. I loved how they call the names out when meals were ready, the person, announcing the names has a good time, making a few jokes, here and there about the names, and setting the mood, which was light and fun. They called us out first for a queso, we were GLAD to pick it up, it was absolutely delicious! We devoured our queso, then shortly after, they called my wifes name again for our tacos. This is when the magic happened! My taco was off the chains, matter of a fact both tacos were off the chains! I took my first bite into my buffalo taco, and I was amazingly in an emotional state of bliss. Suddenly I had the same look on my face that everyone else had, that look where I realize I struck gold. I looked at my son, and he was consuming his Tikka Chicken taco and he had the same expression. Luckily, I had a Tikka Chicken taco waiting for me when the buffalo taco was done. I thought to myself, there's no way the second taco could be as good as the first, but I was equally surprised that the Chicken Tikka taco was super duper AWESOME. Great option for a large take out order! I had some friends in town so we decided to do a pick up order. Online ordering process was easy to use and accurate. The food was ready when I got there! We ordered a 2 orders of the dip trios -- elote was the best! The guac was fresh and flavorful. We got 6 bags of chips... Lots of extras which was appreciated!! The salsa was probably everyone's least favorite because it was very heavy tomato flavor with an artificial fire roasted flavor. The tacos were fresh, full of toppings and worth the price. The birria tacos were my least favorite; they didn't stay fresh for long so that was on me. The Mexi Cali was delicious!! We love Velvet Taco's - this was our first time at the Allen location. Went for dinner on the 28th of December. The place was packed and involved wait time to find a table - they don't have any process for table allocation. You need to grab one as and when another group leaves. In addition to dine in customers, they also had a lot of takeaway business - this meant that the kitchen was working without a minute's break. Could see that employees were putting in their best to serve food on the table as quickly as possible. We ordered Spicy Tikka, Beer battered cauliflower, Korean Fried Rice, Chipotle BBQ Pork, Grilled Salmon, Fish & Chips and Mexi-Cali Shrimp. Salmon was the weakest, didn't have much flavor other than the lime. All the other Taco's were very good. Probably because of the huge rush due to holidays, the place seemed a bit understaffed. The trash was overflowing and Taco trays were accumulating since no one was clearing it. This was the only lone negative part of our experience - again, not a deterrent from making a return. read more

I LOVE Velvet Taco!!! This was my first time going to one and wow, am I impressed. This place is basically an elevated version of Torchy's. Very similar in that both have large "hipster" tacos, but I feel like Velvet just does it all better. The tacos are slightly higher in price but they are worth it. 2 tacos and a side are probably too much food, but there is SO much on the menu that you're going to want to try it all. There is such an amazing variety of flavors on the menu, you're gonna want to study it before you get here. I tried the chimichurri steak taco and it was perfection. 5/5. I also tried the mexi-Cali shrimp taco and it was great too, 4/5. But the real standout for me was the elote guac. That was incredible! It's an absolute must order for me from now on. They have a kids menu, and my kids tried the quesadilla (plain) and the chicken & tater tots. Nothing special to write about here...they both liked the tots and picked at the rest like the picky toddlers they are . (I'm gonna give Torchy's the edge here on the kids chicken, because theirs is excellent and a huge portion by comparison) If you have littles, please be aware that half the tables here are high, which makes seating for low tables (and high chairs) limited. The high chairs they do have are too tall for the low tables so it was a little awkward, and no lids for water cups. Drinks are self serve fountain drinks, standard coke products including Dr Pepper and Coke Zero. They have a drive-thru so that's handy! Everyone was friendly and the place is immaculate (it's new, so hopefully it stays that way!) Food: 5/5 Service: 4/5 (order at the counter but everyone was nice) Price: 3/5 Ambiance: 3/5 - Its cute inside and clean, but I'm dinging them for the lack of low tables, uncomfortable chairs, and it's pretty small inside. Now by itself was cooked well and the breading / frying oil was fresh, but when combined to the prepared bacon slivers that were cold and the slaw the combined taste with the maple almost tasted as if you but a coin or had nickel in a cavity filling. Normally I would give at least 4 stars because I am a regular and I love everything I've tried here. But today I question the integrity of the management. I noticed that there was obvious food (dried sauces) on both inside and outside of chute to self serve ice dispenser. Although the kitchen was very busy tonight, there was a more mature looking kitchen employee just standing there. I asked him if he was the manager and when he said yes, I asked if I could show him something that needs attention. Before I even finished showing, he was already blaming it on faulty equipment that Coca Cola had just finished the repair of. I said well respectfully, this isn't an issue of the line so I don't know why they would be involved when it's clearly food that has been smeared on it. So he made a big show of getting a napkin and cleaning it off and it was obviously a tomato based sauce in one area and sour cream or crema on the other area. I get it they are busy, but I don't even think it's the proper sanitation process, and he acted like he was really inconvenienced to have to deal with it or get me a fresh cup for water. read more
