    Birria tacos with lamb
    Brad N.

Today I learned: This place has been serving McKinney for 28 years, and it was our first time to visit, definitely not our last. It's lunch only, and it's most definitely a "form follows function" place. Small dining area, somewhat utilitarian, but clean and well lit. Place your order by the hot food server area, and pay after you eat at the register nearby. Mexican Coke as well as the usual array of sweet bottled drinks are available, as is a soda fountain with Pepsi products. But what of the food? In a word, great. I chose the birria taco platter, netting me four crispy street taco size tacos filled with a generous serving of lamb, a cup of consomme, and a smaller cup of red sauce to add some spice. Chopped onions and cilantro are also provided if you want it more traditional. The lamb was unmistakably lamb, but not gamey at all. Tender and juicy, and even better when dipped in the consomme, these tacos were divine. My wife ordered the gorditas, a pair of flour tortillas split open and stuffed with chicken and pork, with sides of refried beans and rice (both almost certainly housemade, and delicious). The gorditas were fantastic as well, with tender meats and great seasoning. Bottom line, this was a great meal served in an old school lunch joint that impresses where it counts, with the food and service. Don't let the low key exterior fool you, there's deliciousness therein.

Hidden gem for real. Food: I got the 3 tacos lunch special for $14 - carnitas, shredded chicken, and barbacoa with a horchata. A single tortilla taco was a bit off putting, but I was really disappointed when I went to pick up my taco and it just ripped in half. The meats are extremely flavorful and juicy but that made the tortilla get mushy and rip. Atmosphere: Access road was closed off due to construction & this is not typically my favorite area to be in, but the restaurant itself was spacious and clean! Service: Guy & his daughter are so sweet. Ordered and left with my togo under 5 minutes & this was on a Monday around noon!

    Migas breakfast - delicioso!

Small and simple - with great food and good service. This place is legitimate. Clearly family owned... which I love. We came for breakfast... The breakfast burritos are outstanding... And very large. I ordered the big... But I had to take half home to eat later. My wife had the migas. We will definitely come back here regular. Bi lingual staff.

Great breakfast! Had a breakfast plate, flautas and a few other meats. Delicious. Recommend: Barbacoa, Picadillo & chicken flautas.

Then Izri brought a sopapilla that I brought home to my husband (he loved it, instantly said he wanted more) Chep's had many great different options, some you might see at other restaurants - but you can tell Chepa's options are slightly different (better)... excited to come back and try spinach & chicken enchiladas and tres leches!! The food as a Mexican was amazing especially when you know different regions from Mexico and you know each regions have their flavors and staples. It has been a pleasure for my palate to enjoy those flavor again. We always like asking about the background and origins of the restaurants we visit and we always note and comparare details. The flavors just to reiterate.... Awesome! Atmosphere and service totally outstanding, today was our second time and the person even apologized for us not getting the same booth, we were like what??? You remember that and us? Well we are sold and we found the new place for us to invite friend and have family celebrations! Maybe I can not give a Michelin Star but for sure a "Miguelin" star! Thank you all! Jeziel, Isri, Eli, Charlie , Rolando, we do not know all the names yet but we will acknowledge every one properly and please know that little things come a long way and make a difference!!!! Addendum- for some reason my original post did not post when intended but now that I can, still going there and love it still!!! We have had family gatherings, great moments to celebrate and even when lows, we still found this place an amazing place to be. In all honesty, we feel like they are family, almost like the show Cheers... "sometimes you want to go where every body knows your name". It has been for us a great balance of consistency all around, service, the food, the drinks, even if prices went up (given the economy right now), we know it will be great! Even during these times they have never tried to cut corners or even increase prices!! We love you guys and will continue supporting our local businesses!!

Little bbq or some pico something. Enchiladas with cheddar cheese. Cheddar doesn't melt the way it needs to for a proper enchilada. Drowning it in canned cheese sauce is a crime. The waitress said it was covered in a red sauce. She didn't say the red sauce was Hormel Chili when they remade it. The Dirty Bob was not dirty but im think Bob made it by cutting corners. I had bigger burritos at Taco Bell and they had more meat and a lot cheaper. Says comes with Ranchero sauce. I tried the cheese. Had the runs most of the night. Ranchero sauce is just that. Not Hormel Can chili. My son had the Brisket tacos and was puking in your bath room before we left. Some of the people in our group really liked the food. But they are locals and used to this American food. I think the health inspector needs to visit and see what he finds. You need to change your food from Tex-Mex to American.

They brought a large basket of perfectly crispy, warm chips with salsa and took my order. My enchiladas were bursting with chicken and the sour cream sauce was the perfect compliment. The rice was excellent as well. Even the iced tea is great, and featured a legit lemon slice. They have a full bar which I'll be trying on my next visit and two large TVs set where you can see one or both from any seat in the dining room. I visited Mexican Cactus Taco Bar expecting your typical strip mall taco joint with decent tacos…read moreand some TVs to watch a World Cup match, but WOW did I underestimate what I was in for. I knew from the second we walked in, based on the list of made-in-house horchatas and agua frescas, that we were going to be in for a good meal. The menu was refreshingly unique compared to your basic street taco style setup or the usual Tex-Mex mashup of inauthentic tacos topped with shredded cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. Our group of 3 adults, plus my 7 year old niece, shared a bowl of guacamole, which was phenomenal and came mixed with sunflower seeds and topped with crumbled cotija, alongside house-made corn tortilla chips. We also split an elote cup, which was great. My wife got a classic horchata, which was deliciously sweet (but not overly so) with a nice slight punch of cinnamon. I went with water but will definitely try an agua fresca next time. I ordered two tacos, both on house-made flour tortillas (I like corn tortillas but prefer flour when made fresh). The Pollo Azteca, with marinated grilled chicken tenderloin, mango pico, and a drizzle of crema, was phenomenal, and had more flavor than most chicken tacos I've had before. The star of my meal, however, was the Al Pastor, with adobo marinated pork tenderloin, diced pineapple, onions, and cilantro, with a slice of lime to squeeze on top. This was hands down one of the best tacos I've ever had in my life. I was floored. I also tried my wife's Carne Asada tacos, which came topped with cilantro and onions, and a slice of lime, on their house made corn tortillas. The steak was incredibly flavorful, and the corn tortillas were tender without being chewy. We shared a side of rice and beans, which was good, but not the star of the show. The rice was your typical Mexican yellow rice, and the beans were more of a soupy whole-beans style, which reminded me of my Colombian mother-in-law's recipe. The staff makes four homemade salsas, ranging from mild to pretty spicy, and I loved all of them with the exception of the mild. My niece got the kids' cheese quesadilla, which was a simple melted Oaxaca cheese between a flour tortilla, served with rice, beans, and a little side of crema. The last thing I will rave about is the service. The staff was incredibly nice from the minute we walked in, pleasant to talk to when delivering our order and asking how everything was tasting, to the moment we bussed our tables and headed for the door. I cannot wait to come back again, and I hope they stay very busy until I'm able to do so, because I want this place to be around for a very long time!
