I really wanted to like this place more than I did. The service was great, as was the atmosphere. The food varied in quality: - Wakame salad was overly dressed - the calamari was chewy. Dipping sauce was good. - regular tamago was good -the mushroom and shishito peppers were good - best items were the momo (chicken thigh meat), both spicy and regular: the pork belly; and the chicken meatball - wasn't impressed with the California roll or the super California roll. This is a relatively new restaurant in Downtown Pleasanton - my friends and I stopped by and thought they were reasonably priced for their skewers and their house sake (a large was $9!) Service was good and nothing to complain about. For the specific dishes: -Fried garlic would be really good to order early and pair with other skewers as you go through the meals. We really enjoyed them! -6 pc karaage (chicken thigh) was ok - we think that the breading may have been missing some seasonings. I think next time we would try one of their other karaages. -Momo Spicy was good but we were craving some balance - we found that balance with the Negima (momo with green onion). -Munbe Yuzu was one of my favorites - loved the yuzu kosho added on top. -Tsukune/Tsukune Cheese: The Tsukune was good by itself and we felt like the cheese didn't add much (it's only a 40 cent difference so you can order for yourself and see how you feel). Ultimately a solid place for drinks and snacks. There were a lot of families having dinner so it definitely seems to be meeting the mark across non-drinkers as well! read more

I had some incredibly high hopes for this style of restaurant! However, I can't say that this hit the mark. Although the server was incredibly sweet and helpful in her recommendations, I'm pretty sure this is going to be a one and done visit The two rolls were very bland and kind of boring. My husband and I went out for date night and came upon this izakaya in our neighborhood. They are having a soft opening so it was not too busy. We got here at 6pm and there were about 4 other tables there. We ordered the Yellowtail Jalapeño, grilled squid, eggplant miso, and a couple of skewers. You're coming to an izakaya so sushi shouldn't be the main focus; the tapas/skewers are the main dishes (and pairs well with a cold draft beer). Yellowtail was fresh and pack a bit of heat. I wish they added more sauce to balance out the hot sauce though. The grilled squid was "cold" according to my husband but he liked the charred taste. The eggplant miso was one of my favorite dishes. The miso was a bit sweet but once you mix it with the eggplant, it had a delicious umami bite. The skewers we ordered came in a pair. We had grilled ebi, negima (chicken thigh with green onion), mune (chicken breast) yuzu, American wagyu sirloin steak, and shiitake mushroom. Grilled ebi was salty and sweet with a little bounce to the bite. I would order again. The negima was my favorite skewer. The sauce they used was so good. I needed more! The mune yuzu was ok. I think they used yuzu koshu for a little citrusy heat. The steak was chewy, a bit overcooked, and lacked flavor. Same with the shiitake mushroom. A sprinkle of salt or some of the negima sauce would make it so much better. Would come back to try again in a month or 2 when we are craving some izakaya and beer :) Ps. Absolutely outstanding! We ended up ordering what felt like half the menu because everything looked so good, and every single dish exceeded our expectations. The food was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The soft-shell crab tonight was absolutely over the moon--without question one of the best we've ever had! Great little hole in the wall. The restaurant is fairly clean, nicely decorated, and well-appointed. We sat in the booth. The service was excellent. Taken care of immediately. It wasn't busy on a Sunday evening before Labor Day. The food and fish were amazingly fresh. We had the rainbow roll, salmon avocado roll and hamachi Kama. We're glad we stopped by to check this place out. I hope they'll be here for a long while as things my new favorite sushi restaurant in the East Bay. read more

Amazing spot! Pleasanton is incredibly lucky to have this place adding much welcome diversity to downtown dining and tri valley overall! Izakaya is unique from sushi. The focus of this style of Japanese restaurant is barbecue skewers. Quality wise, this place is top; compares with other great Izakaya spots on the peninsula - Izakaya Ginji for example in San Mateo. Nice variety of skewers and appetizers. At some places all the meats have the same sauce or seasoning. Tori Izakaya had some different ones. For chicken skewer for example we tried "mune ume" (plum) which was tart while mune yuzu had some heat. I don't do hot/spicy so I do wish it was indicated that it was spicy. Special call outs: * edamame was given to my table and was warm * dashimaki tamago was warm (freshly made?) versus typical premade at other Japanese restaurants * glaze on kawa was really tasty. I really liked their bento box special here. I got Option C, and the meats were so delicious, especially the Wagyu skewer. It came with a decent amount of additional dishes, so I definitely felt like I got my money's worth. There was a lot to choose from too, so I would go again to try the other options. read more

The salmon was incredibly fresh, it literally melted in your mouth. The bacon-wrapped asparagus was absolutely delicious and the perfect appetizer. Delicious food and kind service! Opened a month ago and have been meaning to try. Good spot for conversation with a group and to try new things together. We order a few items and shared with each other. Definitely a type of place that focuses on quality over flashiness which I really appreciated. The quality of meat and fish was very tasty and didn't need a lot of toppings or sauces to mask it. I really enjoyed the fish to rice ratio in their rolls. Only tried one grilled item (Mune Yuzu), the sauce really complimented the chicken and I can't wait to try the other grill items! Will be back soon :) read more

This new restaurant is so cute! The food is amazing as well. My husband and I went for lunch and got the bento boxes. We had the wagyu skewers, chicken katsu, California rolls, and salmon sashimi. For appetizer, we had the jalapeño yellowtail-- to die for! The chicken katsu was seriously so good-- super tender on the inside, thin and crispy and delicious on the outside. I'm surprised by the lack of great reviews because I loved it. The staff were also so pleasant, so nice. Definitely coming back! read more

Good place for an unplanned cozy dinner! Started with the grilled chicken skewers; perfectly juicy with a nice light char! The fried chicken is also crispy without being heavy, rice is easy and a salad and grilled veggies do it all. Staff let us enjoy the nice cozy atmosphere without being annoying and rushed! I was excited to try this new sushi restaurant, but unfortunately, the experience fell short. The menu had far fewer sushi roll options than I expected. I also found the bento boxes frustrating because there is no flexibility to customize them. I cannot eat red meat, so I politely asked if I could substitute the wagyu for veggie tempura with chicken katsu. The server immediately gave me attitude, grabbed the menu out of my hand while I was ordering, and made the interaction feel uncomfortable. Customer service was disappointing throughout the meal. Our server was unfriendly and lacked basic hospitality skills. To make matters worse, we waited over 30 minutes for our bill despite there being only one other group in the restaurant. Eventually, my husband had to get up and find a server so we could pay and leave. The food itself was average at best. Overall, it felt more like grocery store sushi paired with poor customer service. I wanted to support a new local business, but based on this experience, I won't be returning. read more

My wife and I recently attended the soft opening of this Japanese restaurant. We were immediately disappointed to learn that there were only 3 rolls on the menu--salmon, California, and hamachi. Also, there wasn't any sushi on offer! The menu was comprised primarily of bento boxes, appetizers (no shrimp tempura), and grilled items. The tempura dipping sauce didn't have much flavor. The beef skewers were so hard to chew that they were inedible. The one hit was chicken skewers with a tasty yellow sauce. Oddly, several menu items combined fish with cheese. We didn't try these, but this is very un-Japanese, since many Japanese are lactose intolerant. Also, we found this combination unappealing. Cannot recommend this restaurant at all. read more
