Got takeout from here on a weekend I ordered a bunch of vegan items on the menu via their online partner. The food was ready in about 30 minutes - when I got there the chef was adding finishing touches. So I checked the restaurant interiors. It's a nice place decorated well. The food I liked the best here were the specialty rolls - both the vegan specialty rolls are delicious The avocado roll is also really good. The tofu was something I wasn't used to and didn't enjoy. But I will still be going back for the specialty rolls.

Kakushi is solid. The place is small, vibes are super chill. I appreciate that they're open late. They have become my go-to for late night sushi. I have enjoyed everything I've ordered, including the spicy miso ramen. This stood out to me because it actually had a kick to it. The broth had depth and great flavor. I've ordered the kakushi roll and I like it, but there's a tad too much sauce for my liking. Tekka maki is standard. The Kaisen Don was good. I like the way the rice is seasoned paired with the toppings. Generally, if I see this on the menu somewhere I try it. It's on point with the others I've tried.

Came here last year for a birthday dinner. It's located in a small little strip mall in Newark and the interior is of a typical Japanese-American restaurant, with a small bar where fresh fish is prepped by the staff and some singular tables outside of that. We had a reservation for a weekday and were seated very promptly (wasn't as many people yet around 6/7PM so probably didn't need a reservation). We were given some recommendations for izakaya and other small bites to share and we landed on a sushi roll, hand rolls, and four skewers. All were great and freshly made - the mango crunch roll was solid, hand rolls, specifically the toro was awesome, and the chicken thigh skewers were some of the best we've had. The pork belly was a slight bit chewy but had a great fattiness to them that gave a unctious umami to them. Would recommend this to anyone who is in the area and looking for a good izakaya spot.

Can't go wrong with the kaisen don. The cheesecake cake out toasty it was nice. They accept reservations. We came in a Thursday so it wasn't busy. Small and dimly lit

A place to get Sushi, Ramen, and Yakitori. With so much Japanese food in the area there aren't a lot that offer all this in one place. The green tea and edamame is also free which is a great bonus. It's in a plaza so plenty of parking and in the 7 years we've been in Fremont I think this is the third business that has been here. The interior was freshly remodeled so it feels different than what it was before. Chef's Special Tartar: This was one of the last plates brought to the table, it's mixed raw fish, avocado, cucumber, topped with tobiki and quail eggs. It comes with taro chips for dipping, it was too saucy and sweet for me and I would have preferred less sauce. Sushi: Kids wanted salmon and tamago and both were good, nice rice to fish ratio. We've had the chirashi don before and that was great as well. Chazuke with pickled plum: rice in tea with ume and garnishing on top, so good on a cold day, very clean and healthy as well. Yakitori/kushiyaki: Beef and chicken thighs were fine, they are lacking a deep grilled flavor and are more light in flavor, not sure if they are using binchotan in the back. The issue was with the chicken wings, we came last year for Valentine's and the parts near the bone were raw. This time 2/4 of our wings had a sewery, turned taste like they were really old and going bad. The weird ones are the back two in my picture, the other 2 were fine. They are up and coming and there was one waitress for the whole restaurant when we went recently. It took pretty long to make eye contact and get our receipt because she was running around to different tables.

Special Oyster (2 Pcs) - good!

Main conclusion: not worth going. The service is very cold and transactional. The food has potential but essentially misses the mark. Mentaiko fries: not crispy enough, many parts of it were unfortunately soggy/limp. The mentaiko sauce only covered the very top layer of the fries and the rest were plain unseasoned fries. The tartar: the lotus chips that came with it were stale and not crispy. It was over sauced and the sauce itself was pretty one dimensional. Beef tongue: not bad but not great. The toast: has potential if the proportions were better. The toast part is too big and makes it hard to eat it with all the components. Special oyster: this was the only fully solid thing that was ordered. The ambiance inside was nice as it was well decorated with nice Japanese music playing. There's easy parking too. Just unfortunate that the ambiance was really the best thing about this place.

    Firecracker roll

The food was really tasty. I loved the firecracker roll!!! Inside has nice ambiance. There was only one chef so expect the rolls to come out a little slower.

Party of 2 on a Sunday. Pleasantly surprised with this establishment. We stopped in on a whim as the place next door that we were going to was closed. Glad we did. Restaurant is super clean. The service was friendly. The soups and roll we tried were all very good and super fresh. I will definitely go back.

Was kind of late and was really craving Ramen, our normal spots close early so I came on Yelp to see if i could find any Ramen spots open at 10pm on a Saturday night and came across this place which is really close to me. Lots of parking and the businesses around in that little corner were also open. Was pretty empty when we got here only had one table, it had a nice setup and decor. We were greeted and sat right away. I was little hesitant because I know it's not specialized in Ramen but it definitely surprised me! The broth was super rich in flavor and creamy, the noodles cooked perfectly and i loved the flavor of the egg! They don't have any add ons or spicy levels you can do but I was really satisfied of how it came as is. Great rich flavor and good portion size. Also as soon as you get seated you get complimentary edamame and lemon water. Our server didn't have a stand out personality but he served well, he gave us water refills and packed up my leftovers. I enjoyed coming here and haven some good ramen and hot sake. I know now whenever Im craven some Ramen late night this definitely will be my spot to come Saturday nights they close at midnight!

    Sharks Roll ($14.99)

Always down for a good sushi spot! My mom and I shared two rolls, a chef special tartar and a ramen. Everything was delicious! I was actually really impressed with the Mi-So Hot Ramen considering it's from a sushi spot. It came out piping hot and super flavorful. My favorite roll was the sharks roll that had plenty of spicy tuna! The Kakushi roll was okay; a little bit too sweet and bland in my opinion. The tartar was fresh but also a little too sweet. Super creamy and soft though. Very intimate and dark setting inside. Cute for a little dinner date. Service was just okay but nothing terrible.

I ordered their katsu Ramen. It was flavorful. I will definitely come back. They have limited sushi choices, but it was good as well.

We went for an early dinner before they were busy. Service was excellent and our wait staff came often to check on our tea and cleared plates. Cool vibe with some anime playing in the background, which the kids enjoyed. We ordered: Takowasabi (always good but it could have been balanced with a little less wasabi) Lemon calamari (pretty tasty to me, but it was larger squid and tough for the kids) Gyoza (the kids liked it, but they were deep fried and I prefer other methods for a better texture) Sashimi supreme (Good portion for the price, and great presentation. Unfortunately the highlight was the salmon belly and hamachi, I really wish there was a better variety of more premium fish even if the overall portion was less. Though everyone has different taste) Sushi rice (I felt it was under seasoned and mushy, really didn't satisfy my craving for a bowl of seasoned rice with my sashimi) I feel like there is a lot to love about this place, even though there are a few things they could work on. This is our second time here and we hope to give them another try, because I really wanted to give them 5* because the service and ambiance was what I was looking for!

Chicken Karaage and Beef Skewers (actually 4)
    Winn H.

Ooh everything looked so good at Kakushi that deciding between their chirashi, sashimi and ramen was a struggle! Thankfully there wasn't a wait on a Friday night. Between three friends, we shared a chicken karaage and beef skewers, and I additionally had a Mi-So Hot Ramen. The chicken karaage was delicious, not too battered and just crispy enough to be fried but feel healthy. The beef skewers were a tad on the drier side but enjoyable nontheless. The Mi-So-Hot Ramen was a tad on the spicier side, and I wish there was a way to know how spicy it might be (or have options) prior to ordering. Outside of the spice level, the egg was super salty, but the ramen portions were extremely generous despite the small bowl. ** Don't let a short bowl fool you! ** Throughout the meal, we weren't checked on much until towards the end, and that includes when we needed staff attention and extra water. Once we paid, we also noticed that the staff entered the Mi-So-Hot Ramen as Tonkotsu ramen as the same price - they're not! Oopsie to that oversight, but for a $1 it really wasn't worth the trouble to correct.

We didn't have to wait and were immediately sat at the bar. Total was about $60 a person but we ordered ALOT, including 2 sake drinks, 2 shitake mushroom skewers, knee cartilage, short rib, ikura grilled rice ball, 2 chicken hearts, 2 shishito peppers, two tofus, oyster chicken, and probably more. I'm honestly a sucker for tapas-sized items because I love trying a variety of things when I eat, so I think I naturally would rate this place higher. Also not a ton of yakitori places in the East Bay so very little competition. Pros: - Honestly, pretty good meat skewers. My standout favorites were the chicken hearts, the kalbi short ribs, the mushrooms. I liked the crunch of the chicken hearts and the tenderness of the kalbi cubes, and I like that there's some non-meat options like the tofu and peppers to cleanse yourself a little bit. - Really easy ordering system, with paper and pencil. - Great for parties of 1-2, my friend and I were right at the bar and we got to watch the skewers cook and have them handed right to us. I think because we were seated here, I felt like the service was really fast. - Because it wasn't too busy on a Tuesday night, even though it says there's a 90 min seated wait time, we were there well over 2 hours (but also maybe because we kept ordering lol) - Plenty of easy parking spots in this plaza - All the staff were nice - Nice dark Japanese street food bar like ambiance, great for a casual night out Cons: - not great for parties of more than 2, there's a few booths in the restaurant that could fit 4 people maybe but I could see a long wait if it's a busy night. - The chicken items (other than the chicken hearts) were subpar in my opinion (which I guess shouldn't be surprising) so I won't be ordering them again Overall, I would definitely come back, but maybe order 1-2 dishes fewer and avoid the fried rice ball (I loved the ikura on this but felt like I could do without it).

Luckily, I did make that reservation and we both got there before opening (5:30pm) so we beat the rush hour dinner time. We were promptly seated and they took our drink and asked if we were ready. We were busy catching up and weren't ready and they came twice and so we just decided the bento box because we were both hungry. While the bento looked smaller than others I've been to. The quality was there and the food was just perfect. I really enjoyed the food at Izakaya. The sashimi cuts of ahi tuna is amazing, while not as big as others that are non-traditional Japanese restaurants. I love the quality and the food they offer. My friend and I both got a bento box and everything was delicious. The servers do come in and check on you regularly which I appreciated and they are really quick to get the food to you. Overall, I enjoyed the food and service and I would definitely come here and make sure I'm first in line!

From M-F, 11:30am-2pm (closing) for just $19.90, you get to pick one of the ramen bowls, and one of appetizers that are listed (at half the size). Here's what we got: FRIED OYSTERS (5) - $12 This was not one of the appetizer options to the lunch specials but sis really needed her fried oysters, haha. This comes with a side of creamy sauce that tasted like a yummy potato salad. It was awesome! The fried oysters were very hot to be careful, and it was very much enjoyed even though it scraped the roof of my mouth, haha. TONKOTSU RAMEN - $16.95 Tonkotsu (Pork Broth) chashu pork, green onion, yellow onion, soft boiled egg, fried green onion, kikurage mushroom. I'm happy that we get a WHOLE egg and not just half! Everything about this bowl was so good and creamy! GYOZA (6) - $8 Chicken/Veggie pan fried post stickers. The lunch specials only come with 3 pieces, and I'm always happy when your savory finger food comes with a dip! No complaints here! KARAAAGE (6) - $10 Fried Boneless Chicken. The lunch specials only come with 3 pieces, but they are huge! Juicy dark meat pieces, with a nice creamy srirarcha dipping sauce! Also hot, so be careful! It just means it's fresh! It is very delicious, but if you've had regular tonkotsu ramen before, I highly recommend trying the Kuro or Aka! 5/5 - Kuro Tonkotsu Ramen - The black garlic oil really enhances the tonkotsu flavor in a smoky, umami way. If you haven't tried a black garlic oil broth, I highly recommend you try it here! You will not be disappointed. 5/5 - Aka Tonkotsu Ramen - My personal favorite of the ramen bowls we all tried here. The spicy level can be adjusted and was exactly the spice level we thought it would be (we chose Level 2). The flavor is a bit more elevated than the regular tonkotsu ramen, likely from the spice that you should not find too overwhelming. 5/5 - Chashu Don (Appetizer) - The rice and chashu makes this its own little meal and is super savory and filling...as an appetizer! This is great to share with your party, and it seems to taste differently from the chashu you get in your ramen. You won't regret trying this! 5/5 - Chicken Karaage (Appetizer) - The chicken in this dish was very juicy, and the portions were huge! The sauce they give also compliments this well. You won't be disappointed with choosing this for an appetizer.
