My wife and I visited for Sunday lunch. We were immediately met by a friendly hostess. This was our first visit so we wanted to try a variety of menu items. We had Weller Old Fashioned 1894 and Granny's Apple cocktails. Both were very good and well balanced. We started with the beef tenderloin and eggplant miso yakitori(not pictured). Both were cooked well and very tasty. Next we had the nori cornbread-this is a must have if you visit. We had the chicken karaage. It came with a dipping sauce and charred chow chow. The chicken was crispy and the accompaniments were very fresh. We had the soft shell crab and corn crunch hand rolls. The soft shell crab was my wife's favorite item. The crab was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. The corn crunch hand roll was delicious as well. Next we had the piri piri shrimp and oyster mushroom yakitori. Both were cooked well and very fresh. We had to get the monthly special- smoked bone marrow. This was our first time trying bone marrow. It did not disappoint. Finally we had the mango and coconut bread pudding. Upon first bite I had a moment. It was so delicious. You must save room for this when you visit. The atmosphere is very comforting. Our server, Lillie was fabulous. She made great suggestions, was very attentive, and personable. We can't wait to visit again with friends and try more items. My friends and I ordered several items on the menu and loved every single thing! The staff were friendly, accommodating, and coordinated. Our server was Binh. He's great! We paced out the courses, which arrived within 10-20 ish minutes with the exception of the nori cornbread as it has a longer cook time. It is 100% worth the wait. They updated the inside with nice finishes. The booth seating was comfortable. It's a great spot for any occasion. We came here for my daughter's birthday and had an excellent experience. The food was delicious, service was friendly and professional and the ambience was sleek and modern. We had the soft shell crab, ribs and several hand rolls. All were superb. I am excited to have another restaurant of this caliber in downtown Chattanooga. Not a place for a family! No changing tables, nor food for young children! Save your money!!!!

If you're reading this, it was day 4 of them being opened when I visited. Service was as expected but overall good. Be patient people. Also, everyone was very kind and attentive. But it's busy. Which is a good thing. Overall this place is fun. Menu is great. I'm a big fan of yakitori - lived in Queens NY and bought it on the street - so glad to see it in Chatt. Is it street yakitori? No. But is it good? Yes. Personally didn't love the chicken hearts but recommend the tuna and unagi. The sushi is solid. Nigiri and sashimi tuna, snapper, toro were very good. Nori cornbread makes a great dessert, although it's offered as a small plate. Sake is also very good. Look forward to returning in the future. read more

Went for lunch on opening day. Torikaya is an excellent addition to the Chatt food scene - particularly for Asian food. Definitely a go-to place for Japanese small bites ("Tapas" style) featuring authentic flavors and composition. They did not have tuna when we visited so I cannot fully comment on the Nigiri options; what we had was good but not a strength (I'm sure it'd be better with O-toro). The skewers (yakitori) are definitely a highlight and reason to come back. Drinks are fun and reasonably priced (come M-F before 3 for 1/2 off wine bottles!). Definitely a place to hang out after work with friends - just like they do in Tokyo. Would gauge that this is pricey buy not exorbitant for value. read more

Space is beautiful and upscale. Cute bar and chef bar with what looks like comfortable seats. Nice to have small booths for 2. They are selling a premier VIP whiskey experience so they want repeat customers who will order alcohol with meal. Not sure that will land but perhaps. So if whiskey is your thing there you go. I commend them for innovating something Chatt doesn't have yet. I'll warn so expectations are set. Everything up until the "small plates aka shareables" is truly a tiny plate. So if you're starving or going to be irritated by small bites of food just skip to that page. The yakitori, sushi, snacks were what I would call tiny plates. All good. Just so you are forewarned. I like small plates but charging $1-2 more for 25% more to not cause frustration probably a better move. But just know this and you'll be in love with the shareables section. Otherwise It takes ordering several things. I'm not sure how well the skewers and sushi will work when ordering for a group. Guidance that several needed are a necessity. A fun way to sample various flavors however. Or lunch. Or on a diet. Or just snacks with drinks with a friend. Or eat at the bar. Dinner - you have to go to the "small plates label" lol. Just trust me. Perhaps the waiters could warn of this upfront so "dinner" is only the "small plates" lol everything else is an appetizer...for one. Everything was good. But you might be shocked how small the seaweed salad is lol like us. Small plates aka medium plates aka shareables: The fried rice was delicious but not fried rice. Savory steamed with a fried egg on top. Very good tho. Hearty. Flavor was excellent. The noodles are less food but spicy and delicious. Maybe slightly too over pan fried. A must. The shishitos and bok choy def worth it. Peppers remind me of favorite dish at Wooden City iykyk. Probably best bok choy ever. I'm not sure you'll come every month but downtown needs a place like this. For the locals I'm just not sure I would choose this over Zaya or Attack of the Tatsu to be honest on the regular rotation. But everyone should come try this and I think they will. Torikaya will do well - come check it out. It felt like we ordered 20 things (it was 13 food items lol) and the bill was just over $100 not including sake. If you're on a budget you're going to jump to just the shareables. read more

The food was absolutely delicious, although the portions were very small and you had to order multiple dishes, but I understand that's the concept of the restaurant. The wait staff was extremely attentive and did a fine job. I did have a couple of complaints, but they were more on policy. There was a very small "back of the house "charge... come on, with your prices you should be able to cover that extra half to one percent. Also, the tip percentage suggestions were calculated based on after tax charges ... Come on that's cheating and is not supposed to be the way it is. Also, we were celebrating a birthday and we were charged for the birthday dessert.... I am thinking if you spend $250 on a meal, you can comp a five dollar dessert.... Service was terrible had to re order drinks and food multiple times. We were sat and waited 30 minutes for our server to take our drink orders only for them not to receive them. Food is tiny and overpriced. Not worth it at all in my opinion. Everything was either overly salty or not seasoned at all. Sushi was the only high point. read more

Do NOT come here. If I could give this restaurant negative stars I would. As soon as we got seated we were sat for a history lesson about the restaurant. We were starving and had to sit and listen to this guy talk about how the restaurant was named after a burnt stick. All of the portion sizes are like bread crumbs for birds. I wouldn't even call any of these dishes an appetizer, but an atom. Their so called "rolls" are tacos that I could make at home. I wouldn't be surprised if the cooks are following a 5 minute tutorial on how to make sushi. I also wouldn't be surprised if I drove down the road to the nearest Publix I could get more sushi for a cheaper price!! Also, I came here with my mom and two sisters in which the server proceeded to ask if the check will be split 4 ways. We are all minors except my mom. Then our waiter proceeded to go into intricate detail about the alcohol menu that is 6 PAGES long. Once again, we are all minors except my mother.
