Saturday night and we didn't feel like cooking. My husband wanted a good burger because he had one the night before and it was lackluster. We arrived around 545 and Tornado's was FULL! Even with everyone standing around the doorway (there is not much in the way of a waiting area), I was spotted right away and they took my name and said it would be a 30-40 minute wait. Turns out it was only about 20 minutes and we were seated in a comfy booth. The servers were super efficient given how busy it was. We ordered the cheese curds and they were nice and hot. I especially liked them because I prefer breading over beer battered. I ordered the F-3 with sweet potato fries and marshmallow. The sweet potato fries were a little soft/soggy even though they looked burnt, and the burger was a little more red than pink, but that's just a personal preference. It was still a solid burger. My husband ordered the F-3 Both, which looked delicious, and the cheese and jalapeno macaroni salad is always a win. My son ordered the F-4 with FF. He's loves a good burger, and wanted to eat it all, but the portion was large enough that he just couldn't. It was loud and energetic, and we had to talk a little louder, but overall it was a nice dinner out with good food! read more

Lively place! Holy cow!!! Love the barnwood/backwoods decor and hole-in-the-wall ambience. No bar seating and first come first serve for tables, but waitstaff is prompt and friendly! This will definitely be a recurring stop on route to my hometown in Quincy, IL. Several cocktail options for under $7! I went with the Bomb Pop and I can't wait to recreate this at home. Tasty and colorful! They also have many beer and seltzers options. They also have GF buns so I was able to try the Copycat burger with bleu cheese! They claim to be famous for their burgers. For the price of $12-15, they include a side of your choice and several toppings on their specialty burgers! You can downgrade to 1/4 lb patty for $2 less!!! Burger came fast and was very tasty! We weren't asked how we wanted our burgers cooked and I was disappointed that mine was well done. It was the toppings that made it taste good, not the meat itself. Fries were great. The atmosphere was ruined by an extremely loud server. It wasn't crowded during our late dinner but he talked and laughed SO loud throughout the time we waited, then ate, that it became irritating. Went here today for lunch and had the F-2 burger and fries. Also had a couple of beers. The service was great, they have plenty of tv's showing the football games. There's lots of memorabilia all around. It wasn't packed, but it was pretty loud inside there. My only gripe is the burger needed more seasoning. Also being from Atlanta there's a signed Tim Dwight Atlanta falcons jersey on the wall. I would definitely come back!!! read more

I met a couple of buddies at Tornados Grub & Pub (1600 3rd St SE 319-364-9378) Thursday (Jan 15) for slightly early lunch. I requested a Fabulous F3 Both ($15.00) with a salad (+$1.00) for a premium side with Ranch and Blue Cheese dressing. I had lemon water ($0.00) to drink. The food came out surprisingly fast. I got out my knife and fork and went at it! Abby was our server. My bill total was $17.12 including tax. My food was delicious!!! I left very satisfied!!! VERY HIGHLY recommended!!! We stopped in to find super cool atmosphere and decor! Our waitress Paige was absolutely amazing! She was very attentive even though she was busy. My fiancé ordered the Tornado double cheese cheeseburger with fries and I ordered the crispy chicken salad with homage ranch. For cocktails we had a starburst and a cucumber cooler. Finally had a chance to check this place out after having it recommended to me about 15 times since I moved to town a few months ago. Let's just say I get it now. It was worth the hype. That's the best burger I've had in a while. I had the F3 and it was so good. My fiancée tried out the F4 - Hot and is already looking forward to having another soon. The fries are crinkle cut and that is usually a drawback for both of us but they were really well seasoned and we both really enjoyed them as well. Overall we really enjoyed the laid back vibes, delicious burgers and great service. We will be back soon! read more

BUT she finished her entire 1/2 pound burger - she said the Sweet Potato fries were "So/So" and she will try a different side next time as they are a little thing and too much on the crisp side for her liking. Regarding the CopyCat burger... this is a burger for Cedar Rapids and Burger Aficionados from back in the day. There was a little but wonderful "hole in the wall" place called the Cork N' Fork that had a Bacon & Blue Burger that was a 1/3 LB pattie with lettuce tomato and Blue Cheese Dressing. The CC Burger is an homage to this wonderful experience... but honestly... takes it to a better and more wonderful level by adding more Blue Cheese with the Crumbles and if memory serves, leveling up the thickness and quality of the bacon being used. That is one thing that I truly enjoyed here, is that everything seemed to be of the highest quality - even though this is "JUST" a pub and grub style joint. Can you smell it? The fries were perfectly seasoned, crispy and plentiful. I had the pickle burger - my new favorite way to have pickles on a burger- fried. My hubby had the F-3 with Swiss cheese, onions, mushrooms and brown gravy. Delicious! Definitely a popular spot for food - people were waiting to get seated. It's definitely worth the wait. I've driven by this place many times but never had a reason to stop in. That all changed the other day when my colleague suggested Tornado's for a quick lunch after a morning of working together. The parking is a bit odd but worked fine. The atmosphere is a welcoming pub style. The burgers were... surprisingly good. The flavor profile was fantastic. Best I've found in that Newbo area so far. I visited Tornado's Pub and Grub with friends and it was very fun and the food looked delicious. I just drank beer while I was there, but my friends all ordered food and they were all very happy with their food. The service was really, really good! Our waitress was very understanding and was a good sport when I asked her a bunch of questions about the menu, due to my stomach issues. One thing to note is that they do not have any gluten-free options available except for salads. I think I was most impressed by their French Dip Bagel sandwich; it looked totally amazingly delicious and my friend thought so as well. Bar with good food. 1. Pork Tenderloin Sandwich - No frills but the pork was juicy and crispy. 2. F5-Could use a tad more flavor but the meat was cooked well and juicy. I thought the potato salad was a bit lackluster. Very saucy and no flavor. 3. The Both - I'm not a huge fan of gravy so I'd order it the gravy on the side. We went late on 1/9 after the downtown area had a huge snow storm. This was one of the few places that was open and we were so glad we came in!! I can picture this place being a bustling, moderately loud bar but overall the atmosphere make Tornado THE place to go! The bartender/server, Ethan, is lively and animated but personable and generally amazing. The decor is so fun and and they have a great selection of music for the digital jukebox as well. The menu has a lot of options and even has a whole page dedicated to their Tornado rating burgers. The drinks rocked! I the Love Potion cocktail, absolutely 10/10, I recommend if you like a Jolly-rancher style flavor. The breaded shrimp were perfectly cooked, the shrimp were soft with the crunchy breading and the cheese curds were good, I don't know what was in the breading but I'd get that several times again. They obviously have a number of regulars who come in which means the regular service must be as good as tonight was. We will absolutely be back on a regular basis to try more of the menu options!! read more

Looking for a laid back, informal outing? This is the place. Nothing fancy here, but super enjoyable. A selection of craft beers as well as the regulars. Lots of choices on the menu. I had the French dip bagel. While it was advertised as prime rib, it was really deli beef warmed on the grill. That said it was still a good sandwich.
