L12. Two Enchilada and 2 Tacos Lunch
Sydney C.

We came here because of the great reviews and loved the cozy, hole-in-the-wall vibe. The service was wonderful--everyone was so kind and attentive, which made the experience pleasant. However, I was really let down by the food. Unfortunately, it didn't resemble Mexican cuisine at all. The cheese dip, salsa, and chips reminded me of something you'd find in a nacho Lunchable. The enchiladas tasted like they were made with marinara sauce, and the rice and beans had the texture and lack of flavor similar to microwave meals, with the beans tasting straight from a can. Even the tacos and chimichangas had American cheese, which was surprising. It's frustrating to be so disappointed, especially since I want to support small restaurants. With the great service, I hope they can make improvements to bring the food up to par.

I find myself in downtown Overland Park much more these days than I ever did in years past. That's due mostly to having added a client or two who are in that neck of the woods. A number of years ago, when my treks to that part of town were much fewer in number, I noticed an old building with cool neon lighting that simply said, "Torreador Mexican Restaurant." I made a mental note that I should grab my bride for a casual date night and give it a try... But I guess the note got "buried" because we never went. A few days before Christmas I wanted to visit a couple of my favorite boutiques in the downtown area, and it occurred to me that it might be a great chance to try out this place. My wife was off work and was game to join me, so off we went! The restaurant is as tiny and unassuming on the inside as the impression given by its exterior. We were greeted immediately and shown to a booth. We chatted with the fellow who seated us and he was very friendly. Service was great from beginning to end... And I really felt as though we were in a place that values relationship with its customers. Almost everyone we saw while we were there seemed to be a regular customer based on their interactions with the staff. I really liked that. The menu was concise and the price point was amazingly affordable. We asked a few questions about specific menu items and ended up, because the prices were so low, ordering an assortment of food items to try. When our meal was delivered, it was exactly as expected. My wife and I shared all the items and compared our impressions... Be aware, we are lifelong Texans who have lived in Kansas for the past 15 years. Our standards for Mexican food may be more unrealistic than many other people, but we make no apologies for it. We were raised with a certain style of Mexican food, TexMex, and it is the standard by which we judge most of our restaurant adventures! Don't judge... ;-) Of the items we ordered, the crispy beef tacos and the toreadors were by far our favorites. The chili Reno and enchiladas were good, but not outstanding. Most of the food items were dressed with Ranchero sauce, which I can take or leave. Theirs was as good as any I've had anywhere else. As we tasted and talked, I remember saying to my wife, "This is all 'fine,' but it's nothing spectacular." I would not feel the need to drive the 25 minutes from my house for the specific purpose of eating at this restaurant, but if I were in the neighborhood around meal time, I would also not hesitate to go back... Especially since I now know which food items I prefer. If you're looking for a remarkable culinary experience, this is NOT it, but if VALUE FOR PRICE coupled with GREAT SERVICE floats your boat, this place is not to be missed.

For the price this is great food. I think I got 2 enchiladas and 2 hard shell tacos for $8. Plus a ton of free chips/ salsa. Sure it is a bit of a dive bar but if you go enough the owners become real friendly with you. This seems like a small town bar/ restaurant in the heart of a city. I'll be back for sure

Best margaritas around! Good food, reasonable prices, friendly staff. Small place with an unassuming atmosphere.

The service was okay! Nothing super special but they answered questions and were helpful at the counter. This was our first time here so we ordered a few things to sample and share amongst ourselves. The first thing we had was the chips and queso, which I thought was a bit expensive at $7.99 but not too bad. The queso was fairly spicy but otherwise nothing special. I usually love queso so it surprised me how neutral I felt toward it! The chips were good, thin and light with a crispy bite to them. We unfortunately didn't get to try the salsa, noticing only at the end of our meal that there was a sauce bar near the counter! The birria tacos were also...okay. They were very juicy but not very uniquely flavored compared to everything else we tried. The meat was tender and I loved the texture of the tortilla, but didn't care for the massive handful of cilantro dropped on top of everything on the plate. The dipping liquid (birria sauce?) was alright! It was the same flavor as the tacos themselves so it didn't add much, but it definitely wasn't bad. The "main course" of what we ordered was a combo of soft chicken tacos, rice, and beans. The chicken tacos were unfortunately very cold by the time we got them which was a bit strange, as almost everything else was hot! They tasted good but I'm really not a fan of eating cold chicken, so I passed them off to my friends. The beans were just okay. There's really not much to say about them. The rice also left me disappointed! I typically devour Spanish rice. Not only was it cold, there were also odd, hard grains of rice mixed in. Not enough to get one every bite but enough that the experience of eating it was off-putting. It was also quite bland. Another note: While we were eating, there was this constant loud droning coming from the air conditioner. I'm a MASSIVE fan of air conditioning so I'm grateful it was on in the first place, but that is something they really need to get fixed. Two women seated near us actually got up and walked outside after commenting multiple times about how disturbing the noise was. My experience here was definitely a mixed bag but it leaned toward the positive, so we'll likely try them again! They had several other menu items I'd like to try, including some American fare that I found intriguing.

My build-your-own weekday lunch ($8) included choice of entrée, choice of beans and rice. It was served just ten minutes after I ordered at the table, which gave me time to dig into the complimentary chips and mild (with a little kick), somewhat chunky salsa. The chicken tinga burrito was packed full of moist, white chicken and topped with a very flavorful sauce and cheese. I found the black beans to be pretty good, but the rice was somewhat dry and clumpy. The dining area had a central bar area, unique light fixtures, a mix of booths and tables, Mexican decor, Mexican background music (not too loud), a table-side cart for fresh guacamole and several backdrop spots for photos. I also noticed two rollup garage doors leading to the covered patio area. The food and drink menus included Mexican favorites, taco flights, taquito flights, margarita flights, 88 tequilas, meals for the kiddos and brunch (Sat & Sun 11AM - 2PM). Overall, very nice, especially for the lunch price.

We tried the Texas dip. Omg you have to have it. The shrimp and cheesy sauce it was in, will be one of my favs anywhere. Chips and salsa were warm, fresh and very good. We shared a combo platter with a beef taco, chicken tamale and a beef burrito. All were solid. Beans and rice were different but very good. Lastly we did a fun margarita flight. You get to pick four and they were pretty good but a lil $$ when you think about paying that much when the four together likely barely makes a regular size margarita. I'll be returning for the dip alone.

My #33 fajita burrito lunch ($11.99) included a nicely sized burrito packed with plenty of tasty, moist meat and fajita veggies. It also included okay portions of flavorful rice and beans along with a small salad and a small dessert. It was served just nine minutes after I ordered at the table, which gave me time to dig into the complimentary thin & crispy chips, salsa verde and mild, tasty salsa. I found the service to be stellar - attentive, cheerful, friendly and polite - nice! The beverage, chips and salsa refills kept coming. The spacious interior was clean and colorful with a main dining area, a secondary dining area and a bar area with more seating. I noticed Mexican background music and several TVs in the bar area. Parking in downtown OP is a free for all, so the lot in front of the restaurant was full before the restaurant opened. It's good that there were plenty of free parking lots and street parking nearby. Overall, very good!
