Love me some parking lot street tacos! I was craving some authentic street tacos and happened to be in the OBT area which only means one thing -- Tortas El Rey! They're an Orlando staple and there's a reason why locals love them. It's drive-thru only with some outdoor patio seating, but if you're like me, you just pull into a random parking lot after and chow down in your car in the A/C. These taco may be small, but they are packed with protein. They have very simple ingredients - corn tortillas (doubled up), a single protein, diced onions, fresh cilantro, lime wedges, and their salsa verde on the side. This time I got the carne asada, chorizo, and al pastor tacos. 3 tacos absolutely fills me up. The chorizo and al pastor tacos (both pork) were amazing. We stopped by while in the area for a little snack. The prices are a little higher than back in the day when I used to live on that side of town but its been about 10 years. Not in the best area (OBT) but I had always picked up food to go which most do. We odered a few street tacos and ate there at one of the picnic tables. If you eat there like we did you might see a homeless person which we did and offered him a taco. Service was fine not much interaction because you order at the window then go grab it. I really wanted to like Tortas el Rey, after watching so many videos on TikTok and reading reviews on yelp it had me excited that I could finally find a taco stand that was reminiscent of the places I used to visit in Pilsen while living in Chicago. However, this was not to be. While visiting on a Thursday evening with no large crowd, we looked at the menu and ordered tacos for me and a chorizo burrito for my son. The taco fillings I chose were one each of: carne asada, chicken, Al pastor, and carnitas. We both ordered Horchata, then had an extended delay in waiting for our food to be prepared. I wish I could say that the extended delay for the food was worth it however I would be lying. My tacos were filled with a generous portion of meat, onions, and cilantro, and that's the best thing I could say about them while the tortillas were warm the filling was lukewarm about the same temperature as the onions my son, however, had a scalding hot interior to his burrito, which was so loosely wrapped that it fell apart. Every other taco place that I have ever visited has always given you two salsa cups for four tacos however there must be a shortage with their Verde salsa because I got one salsa for four tacos. The closest thing to a SoCal taco shop in Orlando! I miss Taco Shops from San Diego. I know I can come here and get a piece of home. The onions are POTENT here so beware of that. I usually try to order with no onions if I can remember. Everything I've eaten here is so good! My faves: -Carne Asada burrito (no onions) -Fried Pork burrito (no onions) -Pork Tamale I prefer ordering ahead and picking up. Best authentic Mexican Tacos I've had in awhile. I kept hearing about Tortas El Rey, so I had to go see for myself. There's outside seating but also a drive-through and DoorDash available if you want to take it to go. Go here knowing what you're about to get, Mexican street food! Loved it so much, especially the price point. We got a feast, practically. For $35 we got 6 tacos, a sope, a Huarache and a Horchata. We didn't eat for the rest of the day from how full we were. I've always pass this place and never been one day on my way into the office I decided to give this place a go. I wasn't sure what to order but the taco looked promising my colleagues told me to do their lunch special. Which I did and it was four tacos with a drink . The tacos come with cilantro and onions which I personally enjoy. (I know some do not) the chicken lacked more flavor in my opinion however for 10 bucks how can someone truly complain? My colleague got the steak she let me try that which I thought was just too greasy. I would go back and try the pork to see if that is good. I do wish they offered jaritos but they didn't disappoint with the limeade they do offer. Expect a slight wait as well it wasn't too bad as they were just opening up at 10;30 am but there was a wait. The drive through is like checkers but you can only use one side. I believe the other side is for walk ups. When I arrived there was a line at the drive-thru which I thought was a good sign, but it was likely due to the orders taking a bit longer as they are made to order. I wanted to try a few tacos, so I ordered the Cabeza(Beef head), Al Pastor, & Carne Asada. The the biggest issue I had was flavor or lack there of. The Carne Asada was very bland to me, the cabeza was a little better but not much. The al pastor overwhelmingly tasted like cinnamon to me, which I'm not the biggest fan of but atleast it had more seasoning/flavor. So came in and 30 mins after opening so there were no patrons as yet since they kinda just opened. I ordered the 4 tacos with a drink lunch special. I upgraded the drink to a large Horchata and it was billed additional $1.50 on the tab. So the total with the lunch special was around $12ish. The wait was kind of long. They make orders as they are ordered. Only thing I don't like is when they call out your order they are loud so with no mask the food and whatever that comes out when they yell your name lands on the food I am ASSUMING. The platter is full of meat on the tacos btw. The taste : Salty and Unseasoned. I would never come back here again for that. I could have went to PLAZA MEXICO in wahneta in polk county for better authentic tacos. Tortas el ray SHREDS THE MEAT and thats what I do not like as well. Thats cheaper to serve it that way in my opinion rather than cubed or chopped meats.. Just the saltiness when I first took a bite of the carne asada was just ughhhhh . And lack of flavor too. It was pretty much shredded meat and salt and then cooked. Topped with onions and cilantro. TIP: since they give you tons of meat and 2 soft tortilas per taco..You can split the meat and use it to the other tortilla making it 8 tacos instead of 4! They give you tons of meat to do this. The Horchata was delicious more vanilla taste than cinnamon. But it was creamy than watery like others do it. The cashier was kinda slow taking my order which is odd because my order was simple. And no other customers were behind. The register POS system was modern so I do not see why she took it slow taking orders. I did not get the pickled beggies that you usually get with an order which is carrot and something else. I would stick to PLAZA MEXICO for my next round of authentic mexican tacos. I got one of each tacos because why not; they we're pretty inexpensive at $1+ per tacos. My favorite in order would be chicken, carne asada, cabeza, chorizo, and Al pastor. My favorite tacos are always alpastor and chorizo, but I found the chorizo to be bery salty for my liking and the al pastor to be a bit too sweet/soggy (the meat seemed shredded and I'm more use to it in small diced portions). I got all the toppings and really did enjoy their green and red spicy sauces; I found the green one to be spicier. I paired this with a pineapple agua fresca, which was a bit too sweet and tasted box made. I ordered 2 of each tacos (1 of each for me and my significant other) plus a drink for a total of about $30 something. The price was good for the amount of food because these tacos were LOADED. The service was really quick, my tacos all came out, in seperate plates, in a matter of minutes given for how many I ordered I was pleased! The workers were friendly and efficient. There is only outside seating here with a good amount of tables. You order at the window and then wait for your food to be called out; they also have a drive thru which is cool! I have heard of this spot for Soo long and many colleagues and friends have always recommended here saying it was one of the best taco spots in Orlando. For what's it's worth, place was easy to find , and kind of easy to spot, but located just off the main road OBT, and located next to Bombay Kitchen. For one thing, tacos were cheap at around $2-2.50. And they offer about 6 options such as chicken, steak, pork, sausage, and beef head. I tried them all but a good amount of them were just salty. My favorite had to be just the chicken, steak, and beef head. Really nice flavor with a mix of the green sauce and it was good to go. Service was great since they were fast and had us taken care of within like 5-10 mins, but I'm not sure if I would come back, but still overall great place and I still suggest to check it out because they have plenty of other options to try from. read more
