Finally, great and authentic Mexican food in Montclair. Tortas Lokas is fantastic and easily Montclair's best value for the money. I note that the negative reviews here are for odd things (a burrito bowl? Why???) that I would never order. First, notice this is called *Tortas* Lokas, and Tortas means Mexican sandwiches. This can be tricky since many of them are indeed Lokas, crazy things with hot dogs on them and etc. but if you look at the menu, you will see "Carne Asada," which is not just Carne Asada but a Carne Asada Torta. Get it! Add some guacamole and some chipotle chilis and for around $12 you have two meals worth of awesome right there (I don't see how anyone could finish a whole sandwich in one go). I've had the Carnitas as well and it's excellent. We have also enjoyed the tacos as well. The atmosphere is clean and nice. Fantastic place. I came across Tortas Lokas as I was walking to get lunch somewhere else in the neighborhood. I stopped when I saw the sign saying Taco Tuesdays $1 per taco. My Hubby and I ordered tons of tacos. All tacos were $1 except steak ones which remained regular price $2 each. My husband ate like 10 tacos on his own. I ate 5. They were delicious. I LOVE Tortas so I was really excited to find this in town, especially for takeout. The sandwiches are HUGE, probably the size of my face, and very good!! The only reason why it got 4/5 is because I think the bread is too "bready" as in it takes up most of the sandwich and is on the drier side. We went in early on a Friday night- at the time, there was only one other table with diners. No one acknowledged us, even after we sat down. There were at least two waitresses, but neither one greeted us. After over 5 minutes, one of the waitresses came over to greet us and take our order. At this point, we hadn't even seen a menu. There were none on our table and none sitting out. We looked at their on-line menu, but it is so disorganized we couldn't figure it out. We got our menus and, after a couple minutes, were able to order. The food came out fairly quickly, but they neglected to bring us any silverware or napkins. The waitresses were walking past us the whole time, but neither of them would stop to ask if we needed anything. It was difficult to get their attention, too. As for the food itself, it's thoroughly mediocre. It's not bad, but it's unremarkable and easily forgettable. It's just a chain restaurant offering food that's slightly fancier than Chipotle, and, IMHO, not as good. I gave it 3 stars for the food, and took one away for the poor service. read more

Probably had them about 5 times. The last 3 times literally half the ingredients that were suppose to be in the torta were missing. The ingredients are listed on the receipt so it is not a mistake of input. Seems like the kitchen staff doesn't care. And it's not just ingredients they may have ran out of, they didn't even put the mayo or any sauce that was suppose to be on the sandwich at all lol so this huge dry loaf bread. No sauce on side. I guess I have to start ripping open the sandwich before grabbing a take-out order since this is many times in a row now. I would like to be getting the torta that I first got when they opened, but that hasn't happened since even though I order the same exact thing every time . Consistency matters. I think tortas lokas is really good. The food is great, the menu/options are great, and so is the meat. But the reason this is 3 stars is not because of me. I saw this restaurant while driving on Valley Road and then saw it mentioned in Baristanet. Tonight my wife wanted a sandwich and I really had an urge for Mexican. So I ordered hers from another place a few doors down and ordered a burrito from here. It was delicious! Not the fast food type - which to me is a cuisine unto itself - but much more authentic/home-cooked. I had the chicken, with Rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado, sour cream, cheddar and a side salad. All included for the burrito price. The really great inclusion were the verde and red sauces. Came here on a whim because the place I was going had a line out the door. I was concerned that the food would be too Americanized (plus too much sugar/salt) but overall the experience was much better than I'd hoped. I was seated immediately and the food came out pretty quickly. Their supernachos were a decent portion and flavorful - worth the $12 (5/5). (Keep in mind I use the fresh salsa and chili they provide on EVERYTHING so that provides plenty of flavor and sodium.) Their horchata is creamy, not overly sweet, and not watered down (5/5). Their juices are also made fresh to order - got the Bam Bam (5/5). Although this place is supposed to be about tortas, I got the tacos and was not disappointed. They're reminiscent of Mexican street tacos. I got the bistec (5/5), al pastor (4/5 - very Americanized), and carnitas (5/5). Carnitas was my favorite as it was juicy and had crispy pieces in it. Loved it - from the food to the very personable service. We got three tacos (across chorizo and veggie) and one of the especial sandwiches (the Yankee). All delicious.
